Finding the hair industry was fate, as she had no intention of building a career in hair and had no idea about the world of stage, shows, and production.-- Being able to learn means being in a safe space to make mistakes while having the support and confidence knowing someone can step and and save you.-- As an early adopter to building her brand and clientele, Ruby used MySpace and found Mavens amongst sororities and groups to help grow her book.-- Ruby became a Bumble and Bumble educator and moved to DC-Maryland-Virginia area.-- Continuing her lean into technology, she built a big Periscope following and led to her becoming an independent educator.-- Then, she was pushed out of her salon out of fear she would take the stylists. Then, the stylists ended up leaving anyway.-- Using social media, Ruby shared so much information and created so much content that she was able to build her reputation, which transcended the virtual world into her reality. This meant salon ownership, people wanting to work with her, and international education.-- Use AI for scripts and captions on social media!

Justin Levitch - the President of RLAH Real Estate in the DC/Maryland/Virginia market - talks with Lee on some of the hard parts of building a brokerage. You know, the parts lots of people never talk about. RLAH has 370 agents and 6 Offices and $2B in sales in 2021. When Justin started with RLAH in 2012 they had 10 agents - many of whom stayed along for their massive growth. Justin has also held many of the roles in the company - in an effort to first understand, then delegate. As well as empowering people to have success in that role - and stay out of their way. Justin and Lee also talk on setting minimum standards of production and how crucial that is to keep a strong culture. With some great techniques for coaching up when people aren't meeting these. It's also important to decide WHICH ideas are worth moving on - always new things and new tools in real estate - but choosing the right ones and staying consistent is key. When you do add new tools or offerings, you also have to get adoption. Another particularly hard thing with Real Estate practitioners. Justin review key strategies for gaining momentum and adoption on new things. Learn more about Justin and RLAH at https://www.rlahre.com/

Redi Berehe is a violinist based in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area. When Redi and her family immigrated to America from Ethiopia, her father encouraged her to learn violin through the Holmes Middle School Orchestra. Around 8th grade, Redi questioned her commitment to playing violin but continued from the encouragement of her parents. Through Annandale High School's Orchestra, Redi performed in concerts, the pit orchestra during musicals, and orchestra competitions. She appreciated the teamwork and deep appreciation of music during her time performing in orchestras. Redi found that through composing on her own she began to feel ownership over the love of her instrument. She felt encouraged by the appreciation she received performing violin at her parish, Peace Lutheran Church. She also joined the Handbell Choir at Peace Lutheran. Redi explained the differences between playing in orchestras compared to jamming with friends in their garage band, Townhouse band. She joined the Oriana Women's Choir while a student at Roanoke College. She currently turns to her violin and singing abilities for self-care practices to foster wellness. Meet Shayla Racquel! I first discovered Shayla through her web series Quarter Century, which depicted the lives of a group of Black friends making their way through love, career, and life overall as post-grads in my resident DC/Maryland/Virginia area. Years later, in 2019, I'd meet her in person at the Pan-African Film Festival showcasing her newest short film, Riverment. The film is a gripping story that follows two generations of Black Civil Rights activists, the opposing yet similar ideologies that come to head in the wake of police brutality on college campuses. Shayla and I talk about her roots in theater, what it was like making her first short film, the film festival circuit, and her life as a growing screenwriter and director. i hope you enjoy our conversation on all things movies! Many of us battle with anxiety and its symptoms, but what’s most important is how we respond, and how we learn to cope. Do you use anxiety as an excuse for all the things you can’t do? Today’s guest shares his personal story with vulnerability, openness, and honesty about how he’s refused to let anxiety stop him! In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, my little brother is here, hoping his experiences can help others.  Royce M is a 2nd-year seminarian at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in Yonkers, NY. Royce received his undergraduate degree in Information Systems at the University of Maryland, University College, (UMUC). Originally from the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, Royce has always been involved in church youth activities. In his free time, Royce likes to run and play sports, and he loves anything related to technology. Royce has always valued stepping out of his comfort zone, stepping into his fear, and working hard to conquer it. Childhood struggles Did you have any challenges to overcome in childhood? When Royce was just a baby, his parents noticed that he was growing at an unusually fast rate for his age. Doctors suspected a brain tumor, but further tests revealed a huge blood clot that was pressing on his pituitary gland, affecting his growth. After corrective surgery, Royce led a fairly normal life, but he had to wear glasses, worked slower in school than others, and was diagnosed with ADHD. These difficulties led to intense bullying in elementary school, which took a lot of effort to get through, with the help of a few close friends who helped create a safe space for Royce. TWEET: There’s no other way to say it but that being bullied sucks. #chasingdreams Hats off to guidance counselors! Have you thanked a guidance counselor today? Probably not. Their work in schools is vitally important, but it’s a thankless job in many cases. When Royce saw his school guidance counselor, she was able to help him significantly. She had a toy dragon that she encouraged Royce to tell about his thoughts and feelings. She taught him that it was OK to feel his feelings and that he wasn’t alone. Ironically, on Royce’s regular summer trips to India, he met a dog that became his buddy---the one he could tell his thoughts and feelings. This practice (and it was the same dog year after year) helped Royce “clear the slate” each summer to prepare for a new school year when he returned to the US.  TWEET: Finding a way to share your thoughts and feelings can help clear your mind and prepare you for bigger things. #chasingdreams Learning to ask for help How good are you at asking for help? Most of us are reluctant to admit that we need help, and sometimes we don’t know who to ask. Royce was motivated to finish his bachelor’s degree, even though it took several years of going down a crazy path. He had the dream of going to seminary but knew it couldn’t happen until he finished his undergrad degree. The game changer for Royce was admitting that he needed help and being willing to ask for it. He took proactive steps in seeing the doctor about his ADHD and asking the college guidance counselor about available accommodations because of his diagnosis. The bottom line is that everything improved for Royce when he asked for the help he needed. TWEET: When you recognize that you need help and ask for the help you need, your life will dramatically improve. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Ask yourself if you would still love what you do, whether or not you struggled to do it.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [:15] Royce’s childhood surgery [2:50] Being held back [5:27] Royce’s experience with being bullied [8:35] The benefit of having a safe space [10:02] How Royce addressed his ADHD [16:05] Why Royce went off his ADHD medication [17:59] Middle school: the peak of bullying and ADHD symptoms [25:15] How high school was different because of a mindset shift [29:05} An unconventional path in college [31:24] Why Royce had to leave college [37:00] Royce’s passion for going to seminary [40:35] Royce’s fears that were in his head [46:09] Where Royce is today [49:15] Royce’s battle wounds [50:35] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Find the Behind-the-Scenes interview for more with Royce on YouTube! TWEETS YOU CAN USE: TWEET: Getting off the ADHD meds was like having withdrawals from a drug. #chasingdreams TWEET: We all go through some kind of struggle, so we have to accept it and ask for help. #chasingdreams TWEET: The first step was admitting that I needed help---and that was the hardest part. #chasingdreams
