Normalizing Non-Monogamy - Interviews in Polyamory and Swinging

This week we're dressing up for Halloween! Instead of our regular weekly interview we're bringing you episode 377 of the Multiamory Podcast "Polyam Beginners, Healthy Boundaries, and Ethical Hierarchy!" We don't normally give advice on our show but when you have a chance to tap into the brilliance of Dedeker, Emily, and Jase... You take it! This is a listener Q+A episode where they discuss: What was the biggest challenge in your polyam journey, and how did you overcome it? What are some good steps to reconnect after initiating a break in the relationship? Any advice for someone looking to explore other polyam sites away from the safe harbor that the Multiamory Discord has become? How can one be a good beginner? What are some red flags or warning signs you see many fledgling polyam folk brush past or ignore? When de-escalating or transitioning relationships to one with less closeness and frequency, do you have any tips for adjusting your expectations or managing hurt feelings? How to set healthy and ethical boundaries within the context of a highly entangled, mutually desired lifelong commitment. Specifically, boundaries that don't look like “veto power” or interference in other relationships, but also don't just come down to “walking away” in the presence of incompatible strong preferences (not needs). How do you know the difference between genuine third party trauma or if emotions are being used to force a certain result? How do you spot this before becoming invested? So we wrote a book and mapped out some tools you can use. Dedeker  12:48 The point is to not just jump to what it is that you think your partner needs but rather ask. Maybe say “what are you looking for here” or for you to tell your partner “hey all that I need from you right now is this”. Emily 13:45 I don't always know what I want, especially with my partner. Jessica Esfandiary 16:50 What people struggle with the most is how to communicate about their relationship choices to the people that don't understand their relationship choices. Jessica Esfandiary 19:00 Finding a good online community is difficult. Jase 19:10 I found that it is often better to communicate in person because we tend to be less shitty to each other face-to-face than we are online. Jase 24:00 When I say “I want to have a talk” it's often associated with “Oh that's gonna be bad. This is gonna be stressful. You have a complaint.” What I love about Radar Check-in is, that it helps to take away some of those notions because in it you also talk about the stuff that's going well, stuff that's challenging, future plans and, maybe things you want to try.. Jase 28:48 Even if you know a person extremely well, you can never fully know exactly what's going on with them. Their desires and needs for something new and exciting in the relationship, even if things are going great, is a great opportunity for a Radar Check-in. Why do we feel jealous? Jealousy is often a complex, catch-all word that encompasses the emotions of fear, anxiety, disappointment, or anger.   Some people romanticize this feeling in relationships. Others use jealousy as a justification for controlling and destructive behaviour.   On this episode, Sara sits down with Emily, Dedeker, and Jase, the hosts of the Multiamory Podcast (https://www.multiamory.com/), to unpack the topic of jealousy.   We start off by defining what jealousy is, and sharing candid personal experiences to show it's a familiar, normal feeling.   Instead of trying to avoid or repress jealousy at all costs, Emily, Dedeker and Jase provide a healthy perspective and evidence-based tools on how to deal with jealousy, based on their own relationship research.   Ultimately, feeling some jealousy could be a sign that there's something you need to work on in a relationship with a partner or on yourself. And it's crucial to do some self-reflection to identify the root cause of the emotion.   This episode is filled with practical advice about navigating difficult emotions in relationships. Tune in now to understand what your jealous feelings are telling you, and how you can manage them the next time you experience it.   ---    Unlock the secrets to female orgasm  http://sarasense.com/ohhh. We are thrilled to have all three co-hosts of the Multiamory podcast on this week. Or as they sometimes refer to themselves... "An emotionally bonded triad who are coparenting a podcast baby." All funny stuff aside, these three have an incredible story and have been in various relationship dynamics together including a quad, a triad, and *gasp* even monogamy. Along the way, they learned a whole lot.   Lucky for you (and us), they took many of those hard-earned lessons and have shared them over the last nine years on their podcast. And just yesterday, (May 23, 2023) they released their new book! Multiamory: Essential Tools for Modern Relationships. We highly recommend it as a practical set of tools and strategies for improving your relationships of any kind.   We're delighted that in our conversation with them, they took some of these tools and wove them into their individual and collective non-monogamous journeys. We found it powerful to hear how some of these tools came to be and how they've personally field-tested them for us. They were also tired of hearing all the same old, traditional, sometimes toxic dating advice. Emily, Dedeker, and Jase believe in looking to the future of relationships, not maintaining the status quo of the past. They value ethics over tradition, and believe that a healthy world is one where everybody has agency in their relationships. Dedeker Winston is a relationship coach, writer, podcast host, and advocate for polyamory. She is a somatic-practitioner-in-training, and joins us to introduce another therapeutic intervention method for you to consider on your recovery journey. Somatic experiencing is all about bodily sensations. It ties together both our physical and psychological experiences to guide our nervous system through its trauma response and into healing. Not all practitioners come from psychiatry, with some having backgrounds in physical therapy, dance, or being a chiropractor. One of the things that draws people — including myself — to this method of intervention is that you do not have to talk about your trauma. Instead, its main focus is understanding what it means to feel things in our bodies, and to stop the feedback loop of body sensations triggering trauma responses that then trigger body sensations. Topics/Triggers: What somatic experiencing is based on, as per its creator Peter A. Levine, PhD How Dedeker's experience with PTSD led her to somatic experiencing + why "talk therapy" wasn't the solution for her A breakdown of Dedeker's 1st session of somatic experiencing, including how she finally started to feel good in her body again Why embodiment leads us back into being a whole being connected to nature in a way that psychotherapy does not What capitalism's influence on therapy has done + the reason it keeps us from knowing ourselves Christianity/Catholicism's influence on our western cultural ideology that being in tune with our flesh is bad A step-by-step of what somatic experiencing is, why it could work for you, personal experiences from our own sessions, and what you can expect from a session of your own Dedeker's personal word of advice for survivors, especially those that are LGBTQ+ and/or in nontraditional relationships Multiamory Podcast Dedeker's book: The Smart Girl's Guide to Polyamory Peter A. What is love? More books, songs and movies have been written about the topic than any other combined. And yet we still have that one answer. What we do know is love is the greatest human experience of all. And with regards to relationship models and recent years, some of us have become aware that the one-size-fits-all is not the solution for everyone, and that monogamy is not the only way to successfully conduct a relationship. In fact, growing numbers of people are living non-monogamous lifestyles. A 2017 study found at least one in five people have engaged in some form of consensual non-monogamy before. One approach to living a non-monogamous lifestyle could be to adopt a philosophy and lifestyle of polyamory. And this is what I will discuss with today's guest. Latchets, crucibles, and terebinth trees all get a moment... as does a metaphor about shaving. Is it really a metaphor? If you thought Bic was the first to create gender specific pens, you're wrong! Although it's highly likely that he was tripping and will be for some time, Isaiah shares an important prophecy. If you want MORE drinking and bible-ing, including bonus episodes, interviews with experts, fun mini series’, and more, consider becoming a ‘parishioner’ at Patreon.com/DrunkBibleStudy Our theme music is Book Club by Josh and Anand.

Normalizing Non-Monogamy - Interviews in Polyamory and Swinging

In her early twenties Dedeker continually found herself wanting to cheat on her partners even though she loved them and still wanted to be with them. She never cheated, but after confessing this to a friend of hers one night, he pitched the idea of open relationships to her. After she was done being offended, she researched it extensively and began the incredible journey that led to the story she shared with us. Beyond that, her experiences and wisdom have helped her craft the incredible Multiamory podcast as one of its three co-hosts. This conversation literally takes us around the world and across pretty much the entire spectrum of non-monogamy. No defaults. That's how Dedeker Winston, and her romantic partners Jase and Alex, see the foundation of their relationship structure: conscious, intentional choice around a lifestyle that works for the people involved in it, rather than defaulting to the monogamy (or serial monogamy) of our culture. As a former evangelical Christian, Dedeker not only left behind her faith but also many of the ideas based on it, like its messages about sex and relationships. In this conversation with Bart Campolo, Dedeker talks about hierarchy in poly relationships like hers, the 'relationship escalator', expression of ultimate values, the fallacy of thinking that one person can play every role in one's life, commitment, financial and legal matters, comparisons with blended families and LGBTQ families, the difficulties of being in alternative lifestyles in a society that doesn't see them as normal or good, and takeaways for couples who plan to stay in monogamous relationships.
