Ah yes — the influencer. From the dawn of social media, influencers have long held the ability to connect brands to viewers and convert viewers to buyers. And so often, it looks effortless. However, what's happening is a well-constructed narrative that, when done effectively, can authentically shift consumer perspective. How are influencer relationships maintained, and how can you collaborate with them most beneficially — particularly in unconventional industries? In this episode, we sit down with Eddie Saunders Jr., former Demand Generation Manager for Flex Machine Tools and current Sr. Content Strategy & Demand Generation Manager at Norgren, for an insightful conversation on how to inject fresh, new life into your marketing efforts and maintain a positive influence in marketing spaces.Let's get started!MINDSETS: The Direct Line of Attention - Consider fishing: you can check the pond, or you can go find the “sure thing” that another fisherman sends you too. The same goes for marketing; finding the users that produce qualified attention will have a huge impact on your awareness efforts. H2H - Flipping the B2B and B2C mindset to understand that, at the end of the day, marketing is a human-to-human interaction. Eddie immersed himself in the human experience as a way to expand his worldview and improve his marketing ability. Taking an empathetic approach opens opportunities to strengthen business relationships. Actively Avoiding Selfishness - Recognizing that the most important part of marketing is relationship building. Bonds aren't built overnight, but the crucial work of relationship management played a large role in Eddie's success as a leader. Making Noise - Keeping current plays a large hand in maintaining an audience. That includes taking risks, trying, failing, and trying again. Importantly, the noise attracts an audience, and those who like your noise are prepared to stick around so long as you're making it.  The Buddy Branding System - Synergistic collaboration — a kind that benefits both sides of a relationship, curates a mindset that expands creativity, and mutually helps participants expand their audiences and mindsets in the process while restricting the amount of work an individual needs to do to a tangible level.  Enjoying the Laughter - Laughter is a joyous activity that can benefit your mood, even during tough decision-making. In business interactions, keep the atmosphere as lighthearted as is appropriate, and it can help keep professional settings a lot more positive.  Gravitating Towards Expertise - Eddie may be a prolific communicator, but his penmanship? That's a different story, and that's OK. Gravitate towards what you're good at, emphasize what you're good at, and spend some time working on what you're not so good at.  SKILLSETS: The Human Decision-Making Process - Having a grand understanding of human interaction — with emphasis on why humans even make decisions — will make you a better thought leader. The “Them” Focused Framework – We learn about ourselves quite easily, so changing the framework in professional settings to emphasize the “other” in any situation — particularly potential business partners — reflects positively on any empathetic efforts. Strategic Experimentation - Content decisions may not only be focused on likes or views, but data plays a large role in any testing process. Open eyes, open ears, and general curiosity in content creation will yield results that can be replicable for your business over and over again. TOOLSETS: Podcasts Open Communication Video  Buffer (Social Posting & Analytics) Mailchimp Constant Contact Canva RESULTS:With Flex, Eddie was able to track 4 million impressions across Flex Machine Tool's major social media platforms — 95% of which came from organic traffic. Focusing on influencers afforded Flex over 1.6 million views — results that you may otherwise have had to spend tens of thousands of dollars for. Eddie had set a goal for 2 million impressions by the end of 2022, but after seeing initial results expected to double that goal by 2023 — all with no ad spend. A bit more about Eddie:Eddie Saunders Jr. considers himself a thought leader by strategy and by design— one who sought out and worked on the importance of scaling influence. With a background in theater, Eddie quickly found success in the industry of attention and has closely aligned himself with influencers at the most successful level of his career. Marketers are Ethical Hackers Prove Me Wrong with Clark Barron

Joining Maria and Gianna this week is Clark Barron, the Demand Generation Manager at Nisos. He has a background in cybersecurity marketing, photography, and independent film, and is an avid gamer. Clark shares his unconventional ways of lead generation through websites. Every marketing campaign might feel like it says the same thing, but Clark defies the user's expectations to bring in user interest and stand out in the field.   Timecoded Guide:  In this podcast, Clark covers:  [5:48] Marketers are hackers of different colors [9:14] Campaigns that changed the game [15:08] How Clark tracks his unprecedented marketing campaigns [22:31] Communicating with leadership to try your ideas How can marketers apply this approach to messaging branding? Marketers have more influence and power than they often realize. The similarity between hackers and marketers is that marketers are gathering data in an ethical manner. Both are building personas, exploiting pain points, researching, and reaching vulnerabilities. Clark believes that is the power of choice to be good ethical marketers.  “Marketers, a lot of times, don't realize the kind of powers that they have, they have to make a choice to use them for good. That's the way I look at it.”   How have specific campaigns you've implemented changed the game? Clark started his process by evaluating voice and brand identity. He sat back and watched what others were doing. Noticing that all the cybersecurity websites were saying the same thing over and over, Clark decided to take action in a wacky way. He developed a marketing strategy that changed the game. “Subvert their expectations from the very beginning. They're expecting one thing, and they're getting something completely different. We know what they're expecting, but instead, what we're gonna do is, we're gonna say, ‘Enjoy a completely different cybersecurity landing page.'”    How do you have conversations with leadership to go along with these ideas? The first step is to have those conversations. If the CEO or higher-up doesn't understand marketing processes, then you need to have those conversations with them. Long-term growth is what you should be working toward. Before you cast out the big campaigns, you have to have small wins so you're better prepared for a marketing plan with bigger risks. “A lot of bigger organizations are not going to be able to do this. I have that level of self-awareness that I know that, however, what you can do is change the way you look at conversations with leadership.” ______ Links:  Find Clark Barron on his website or LinkedIn and check out his blog here! Attribution - and how tracking everything may not be possible (and why that is not necessarily bad). How to qualify leads (and why lead scoring is not always the right way to go). What to do with all of the leads that interact with your product but are not ready to buy. Why does talking to people who do not have high intent make sense for demand generation? Suds & Search | Interviews With Today's Search Marketing Experts

My guest on this week's episode of Suds & Search is Garrett Sussman, Demand Generation Manager at iPullRank. Garrett is an industry veteran with over 10 years of experience. He's a popular podcaster, blogger, and must-follow on social media. Garrett made news earlier this summer when he announced he'd be joining Mike King's already impressive team over at iPullRank. I'm going to ask Garrett how he's settling into the new role and when we might see him behind the mic again. Prior to joining iPullRank, Garrett had an impressive run working in key roles at companies such 99Designs, Traject, and Grade.us the popular local SEO Tool. We're at an interesting moment for tools in SEO. Moz was recently acquired. SEMrush went public. I'm going to start my conversation with Garrett by chatting about the big announcements from earlier this year. Most people in digital marketing like to carve out a niche and become the top person in whatever that is. What I really like about Garrett is that it's hard to pigeonhole him into just one thing. He's got a wide breadth of knowledge about a lot of topics in digital marketing. That made for a more fun and wide-ranging discussion. Grab something cold to drink and join me for a conversation with Garrett Sussman. We'll talk about SEO super teams, how to properly market a software product, and what's next for him and the team at iPullRank. Khadijah and Jude worked together at a startup in Toronto–both on the marketing team. Khadijah was the content person, and Jude was a digital marketer focused on paid advertising. Now, Jude is still doing ads as a Demand Generation Manager at Clearbanc (which has recently expanded into the United Kingdom). Before Jude and Khadijah met at work, Jude was working for the Sick Kids Foundation and learned a lot of her marketing fundamentals there. As she moved more towards ads/digital, she learned that she loved the creative aspect of this type of role being paired with data and analytics that allow her to truly understand the impact of the campaigns that she runs. When it comes to buzzwords and terms, both ladies agreed that "growth hacking" could be left behind, and that ABM was on the rise. Even though organizations have likely been doing ABM (account-based marketing) whether they knew it or not, there is so much more messaging around it and clear structures for how to execute on it. On the note of messaging, both agreed that at the start of the pandemic, there were quite a few hits and misses in terms of covid-themed messaging from companies. In short, the hits really hit and the misses were coming across as the "saviour" for people in an unprecedented time of crisis. We're all just trying to figure it out, even a year later. When it comes to marketing, Jude really emphasized that she loves how fast-paced marketing is. The term itself she finds to be overused, but it's great being able to constantly switch between tasks and projects. Even if the final product is months down the line, the work leading up to that point can really keep you on your toes. Backstory-Micah's sales journey started in the 2000s when he began cold calling for the New York Times.-After college he began helping his brother with his e-commerce business and made the move to the Bay Area where he later broke into tech sales and learned the power of the tools tech sales utilized.-With that understanding he accepted a BDR position at LaunchDarkly. At the time there wasn't a ton of communication between the head of marketing at the BDR team which made his time there difficult. The marketing department was not very receptive to his ideas.-Wanting to dive deeper into marketing, he pitched himself to Gravitational and currently works as their Demand Generation Manager.Sales Addiction-In sales, hours spent working equals more money and the better you're spending those hours equals more money. Add in the fact that Micah wasn't being recognized for his work, but wanted to be seen as someone that could perform and you have the perfect conditions for becoming addicted to working.-It wasn't until he began having stress related medical problems that he realized he needed to make a change.Pitching Yourself and Seeing Your Value-When he went in for an interview with Gravitational they weren't hiring for the job, but he pitched himself through an email to the VP of Sales, met him for coffee, and 5 days later had an offer letter.-This happened so quickly because he recognized his value. Micah had built out a dashboard that highlighted his successes and value to his previous company including information like the amount of opportunity he brought in, pipeline value, etc. so when it came time to reach out he was ready.-We are our own worst critics, to see your value you need to acknowledge and adjust how you speak to yourself. Whether you read motivational books or listen to speakers, find a way to hype yourself up and fake it til you make it.Separating Your Identity-As a sales person it's easy for your personal identity to become so intertwined with the company's that they become one, but it's important to maintain some sort of definition.-Micah advises to look at your social media presence because you have a personal brand. All of the connections he's made and conversations he's had at previous employers are his own, not his company's, and are relationships he can carry forward as he transitions throughout his career.Resources-Crucial ConversationsConnect With Micah-LinkedInSend in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/othersideofsales/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/othersideofsales/support
