In this episode of Business Ninjas, Andrew Lippman sits down with Derek Weeks, Chief Marketing Officer at Katalon Inc. and author of Unfair Mindshare, to explore the transformative power of community-led marketing and innovation in quality assurance. What you'll learn in this episode:

Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

After hundreds of interviews with tech innovators I have concluded they are all trying to accomplish the same thing: tell how they can help get the word out that they may have a slice of the solution for federal information technology. One of the best ways to “get the word out” is through a community of interest. During the interview today, Derek Weeks details his success in forming a community around Development Operations, or DevOps.  In fact, he has published a book detailing that wildly successful endeavor:  Unfair Mindshare LINK One of the keys is to listen to problems and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges in remedying complex tech concerns in the federal government. The community is called DevOpsDay https://devopsdays.org/ Derek and a colleague started with an idea to have a couple of hundred developers have access to each other in an informal meeting. It became so popular that it has blossomed into a group of 30,000. Some key takeaways ·Start with a user-lead experience. There is no use in guessing what topics will be of interest to the community. Reach out personally to dig deep into current issues and concerns. ·Give without expectation. User generated content is closest to the problems than anything from the marketing department. Content from sponsors as well as from members should be shared willingly. ·1,000-hour rule. There is a commitment of at least 1,000 hours a year to accomplish a successful community. This is not a “set it and forget it” initiative. Careful nurturing and growth of the community needs a real effort. ·Localize community relationships. We have seen meetups all over the world. One way to get the word out is to contact like-minded professionals. A problem in Sao Paulo, Brazil could be the exact concern in Kigali, Rwanda. ·Sustaining the relationship is as crucial as beginning it. Derek gives specific tips on maintaining the relationship over the long haul. The success of community building tells us more about software developers than anything else. Aggressive pitches will be discounted. Generic email blasts are outdated. Digital natives appreciate authentic experiences. This means that a community leader does not look at a member of a community as a “prospect” but as a “person.” = = = Want to leverage you next podcast appearance? www.podscorecard.com Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com

Raul interviews B2B software marketer Derek Weeks as he shares his belief in human-centric marketing, which he discusses in his book "Unfair Mindshare". He emphasizes the importance of providing value through community-led initiatives and attaining an unfair advantage in crowded markets. He counters the traditional viewpoint of CEOs that marketing should drive sales, instead advocating for building trust and community. As an example, he shares how his DevOps community offered free resources, generating engagement, valuable leads, and significant revenue in the long run. Derek also referenced a successful B2C community model that could work in B2B settings. He argues for a balance between being helpful and pitching a product and stresses the importance of authenticity and trust in fostering customer loyalty.  Who's The Guest? Derek Weeks, the founder and CMO of Unfair Mindshare, is an award-winning B2B software marketer. He is a four-time CMO and VP Marketing with over 30 years of experience in both Fortune 100 tech companies and venture-backed start-ups. Derek is also the Amazon bestselling author of Unfair Mindshare: A CMO's guide to community-led marketing in a product-led world. Derek joins us from Bethesda, Maryland where you can find him rooting for the Ravens, smoking meat, or driving his kids to football and ballet practice.   Episode Highlights The premise of Derek's book, which promotes the idea of running more marketing teams, integrating them with demand gen and brand programs The benefits of building a community including gaining extensive knowledge about the market and the behaviors and personas of people An example of how to integrate community led marketing with brand and demand gen activities The importance of running authentic Community Led Marketing (CLM) The balance between automated, machinery-driven marketing and human-driven marketing. The benefits and the reach of larger communities How it's not about not pitching at all but about making sure your interactions with the target market are authentic and helpful for a majority of the time before you make a sales pitch Episode Resources Connect with Raul Hernandez Ochoa https://www.linkedin.com/in/dogoodwork/ https://twitter.com/rherochoa https://dogoodwork.io/ Connect with Derek Weeks Web: https://unfairmindshare.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derekeweeks/   (please DM me) X: @weekstweets   Review, Subscribe and Share If you like what you hear please leave a review by clicking here

Welcome to Breaking Through in Cybersecurity Marketing, where we explore the hottest topics in cyber marketing, interview experts, and help you become a better cybersecurity marketer! In this episode, Derek Weeks, author and CEO of Unfair Mindshare, joins Maria and Gianna to discuss community.   To begin, Derek shares that he has been working in community marketing for many years. He found that many people did not understand what community marketing is or how to succeed. Unfair Mindshare is all about showing CMOs and marketing leaders how to integrate community marketing as part of an overall integrated marketing program in order to elevate their brands and increase customer retention. This is what Derek unpacks in his book, Unfair Mindshare. He describes marketing in 3 orbits: product-led, brand-led, and community-led. While the first two orbits are transactional,  the latter is really about collaboration and working together. The biggest red flag that you might be doing the community orbit wrong is if you find yourself talking about yourself often. As a CMO, your primary goal is to promote your company and products, build pipelines and drive revenue. However, Derek explains how CMOs can attract an even larger audience by not talking about themselves but being helpful from the beginning.   Next, Derek outlines how to build the best team for a successful community-building operation. He sees community marketing as another functional area within marketing that is equipped with dedicated staff. This function can be 5-10% of the total marketing budget. However, it requires at least 1,000 hours of work per year in order to make a large enough impact. This means that one person on your team should spend at least 50% of their time focusing on this one area. Your team is responsible for creating either a new community or leading within an existing community. Before wrapping up, Derek offers his best advice to listeners. Finally, our guest and hosts engage in a fun guessing game to reveal what career Derek would pursue outside of the cybersecurity marketing field.   Links: Follow Derek on LinkedIn. We're excited to welcome back Derek Weeks, recognized as the world's foremost researcher on the topic of DevSecOps and securing software supply chains, to the podcast! Derek shares insights on just how little has changed relative to securing software supply chains and using SBOMs in the two years since we last caught up with him. For those new to SBOMs, they are like the nutritional label on a cereal box except for open source software (OSS). We're we're seeing astronomical growth in organizations' use of OSS to the tune of 3+ trillion downloads in 2023. And even with events such as Log4j within the last year, we still haven't had the cataclysmic event to act as a forcing function for more organizations to embrace SBOMs. This has opened the door for the U.S. Government to bring to the table the Securing Open Source Software Act of 2022. Derek joined IT Visionaries for a conversation centered on the growth of the DevOps industry and how he is helping to grow that community through All Day DevOps, an online 24-hour conference featuring more than 100 speakers. Key Takeaways   A Growing Industry: Five years ago if 1,000 people attended a developer’s conference it was considered a success. Now, more than 40,000 developers routinely attend All Day DevOps conferences. More Widely-Adopted, But Not Flawless: The use of open-source code continues to rise in popularity due to its velocity and efficiency, but it’s not without vulnerabilities, downloads that included encrypted code, or malware  Seeking Clarity: Many companies still fail to understand exactly what DevOps is, where DevOps can be used, and the benefits of the DevOps industry. Therefore, a lot of education still needs to happen internally as well as externally.  --- IT Visionaries is brought to you by the Salesforce Customer 360 Platform - the #1 cloud platform for digital transformation of every experience. Sonotype's Nexus open source governance platform helps more than 1,000 organizations and 10 million software developers simultaneously accelerate innovation and improve application security. This is the seventh year that Sonatype has done this DevSecOps report, and, according to the company, it's the longest running community survey on this topic. We discuss with Weeks how the practice of DevSecOps changed since the company started doing the survey, and the challenges organizations face in embedding security within their DevOps practices. We also ponder the reasons behind the puzzling finding that those companies with mature DevSecOps actually have more security breaches. TNS editorial and marketing director Libby Clark hosted this episode, alongside founder and TNS publisher Alex Williams and TNS managing editor Joab Jackson.

The purpose of the analysis was to objectively examine and empirically document, release patterns and hygiene practices across 36,000 open source project teams and 3.7 million open source releases. In this conversation I speak with Derek Weeks, Project Lead for the report, and Stephen Magil, who along with Gene Kim, acted as research partners on the report. I produced my first concert at the San Anselmo Playhouse in 1979. It was the first in a series of events that has lasted 40 years. I have produced more than 300 events and participated in many hundreds more as a speaker and participant. As the producer of this many events, I have an internal map of what to do to make an event successful, the steps to create and manage the logistics of an event, and how to promote them. All Day DevOps, a live online conference I co-founded with Derek Weeks, has over 30,000 registrations yearly. This type of involvement gives me a unique perspective into why an event is successful. In the past few years, I've been sketching out a "How To.." manual on producing successful events. When the book "Building Internal Conferences" came across my radar, my first thought was "Good! Something I won't have to do." After looking through the book, I called authors Matthew Skelton and Victoria Morgan-Smith to trade stories on tips and tricks for managing successful events. You might ask yourself at this point, "Why is this being covered on a tech podcast?" With so much to choose from when it comes to webinars, meetups, user groups and conferences, many companies are choosing to host their own event internally, or participate as supporters of a regional event. Industry conferences such as DevOps Days, DevSecOps Days, and SharePoint Saturday are run by local teams who are engaged in community development and education. This episode of the DevSecOps Podcast focuses on helping you as an event organizer avoid the "Epic Failures" that would stop your event from being a success. This was the topic of our discussion with Derek Weeks, the Vice President at Sonatype, to talk about why security should be included in DevOps, the difficultly of compliance for open source usage and what may be in store for organizations that don’t take security seriously. “If you don’t think you’re consuming a lot of open source, you really have to look at the reality of how software is built today… There are only six million JavaScript developers on the planet and they’re downloading 6 billion components a week.” Weeks offers small changes that developers– pressed for time – can make to make software products safer.
