Federal Tech Podcast: Listen and learn how successful companies get federal contracts

After hundreds of interviews with tech innovators I have concluded they are all trying to accomplish the same thing: tell how they can help get the word out that they may have a slice of the solution for federal information technology. One of the best ways to “get the word out” is through a community of interest. During the interview today, Derek Weeks details his success in forming a community around Development Operations, or DevOps.  In fact, he has published a book detailing that wildly successful endeavor:  Unfair Mindshare LINK One of the keys is to listen to problems and gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges in remedying complex tech concerns in the federal government. The community is called DevOpsDay https://devopsdays.org/ Derek and a colleague started with an idea to have a couple of hundred developers have access to each other in an informal meeting. It became so popular that it has blossomed into a group of 30,000. Some key takeaways ·Start with a user-lead experience. There is no use in guessing what topics will be of interest to the community. Reach out personally to dig deep into current issues and concerns. ·Give without expectation. User generated content is closest to the problems than anything from the marketing department. Content from sponsors as well as from members should be shared willingly. ·1,000-hour rule. There is a commitment of at least 1,000 hours a year to accomplish a successful community. This is not a “set it and forget it” initiative. Careful nurturing and growth of the community needs a real effort. ·Localize community relationships. We have seen meetups all over the world. One way to get the word out is to contact like-minded professionals. A problem in Sao Paulo, Brazil could be the exact concern in Kigali, Rwanda. ·Sustaining the relationship is as crucial as beginning it. Derek gives specific tips on maintaining the relationship over the long haul. The success of community building tells us more about software developers than anything else. Aggressive pitches will be discounted. Generic email blasts are outdated. Digital natives appreciate authentic experiences. This means that a community leader does not look at a member of a community as a “prospect” but as a “person.” = = = Want to leverage you next podcast appearance? www.podscorecard.com Connect to John Gilroy on LinkedIn   https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-gilroy/ Want to listen to other episodes? www.Federaltechpodcast.com

During the pandemic, and after, customers were forced to handle customer support issues completely online or over the phone. This increased the overall volume and the speed, or velocity, at which calls were coming in.

Most of the 12-14 years it takes to develop a new drug aren't spent actually developing the drug. Enrollment, overseeing the trial, closing the trial, submitting to regulatory bodies — that's where the time goes. There's a better way — and the expedited COVID vaccines prove it. Today, Jay Kaminski, Independent Biotech Executive and former leader of Global Clinical Research and Development Operations, joins the show to discuss how drug development can benefit from the lessons learned in other industries and turn the COVID vaccine timeline into the new standard. In this episode, we discuss: - Why the technology and innovation in clinical trials lags behind the science - How other industries, such as mobile banking, can shape faster, more effective drug development - Why standardization and partnerships would radically transform the effectiveness of the industry To hear more from Accelerating Clinical, check us out on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on our website. In case you missed my LIVE interview with the phenomenal Karen Pilla (Senior Director of Development Operations, Oracle), here are a few of the wisdom gems she shared:The key word is flexible. You have to be flexible during these times. It's okay to hit that wall. And take some time for yourself. It's okay not to always feel productive especially when going through times of change. As a leader it's important to give them the freedom to act and if they don't have the best day today, they'll do better tomorrow. The most important piece of being able to keep people productive is making sure that they understand that it's possible to be flexible. It's important to throw in some fun activities in weekly meetings and calls to keep morale high and to destress. For products, It's essential to be realistic and flexible, about what our deadlines are, when we can deliver things. To be notified for future interviews be sure to connect with me here on LinkedIn AND to learn more about how to build the mindset and influence for real change, join our community at www.SherylKline.com. #limitlessleader #womenwholead #oracle #sherylkline

As our first trilogy comes to a close, and we embark on the next one, we’re doing what all great trilogies do: Upending everything that made the initial one great and starting afresh. We have taken on board some excellent listener feedback to keep this the highest quality Elixir related podcast. So, for this launchisode, rather than doing a trailer, we are diving in headfirst with a full episode on system and application architecture, this season’s theme, with Justus Eapen, Dan Ivovich, and Eric Oestrich. We kick off the show by getting to know Dan and Eric a bit better. This season, as per listener requests, we will spend more time on our guests' personal lives. We learn about Dan and Eric’s time at SmartLogic, their experience working with Elixir, and their approaches to learning it. From there, we move onto tackling clients’ projects. We discuss the importance of letting ideas flow free as well as how to break projects down into manageable sized segments to work on. Following this, we touch on flexible architecture. As the world changes, sometimes at a pace faster than we anticipate, it is more important than ever to design systems that we can iterate on. Then, we discuss the future of applications and architecture and the exciting possibilities in-store. The show rounds off with our new segment, Pattern Matching with Todd, where our friend Todd Resudek gets to know someone in the community a bit better. Today, he talks with Connor Rigby of Binary Noggin, finding out more about his programing journey, his favorite music and movies, and his WiFi meshing project. We're so excited for this season, and we hope you join us on the journey. Tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: Dan’s background and how he came to be Director of Development Operations. How Eric started at SmartLogic and what his journey at the company has been like. Learn what convinced Dan to go all-in on Elixir and make the move from Rails Some of the educational materials and tools Dan and Eric used to learn Elixir. Dan’s preferred style of design and why he enjoys TDD. Why we think that Cucumber falls short and chose to move away from it. Find out what we think domain-driven design is. How Dan and Eric approach deconstructing clients’ projects. Pre-coding: Why it’s best to do free-form planning, with no constraints. Insights into the broad-reaching term of ‘API’ and what we mean by it. SOAP and REST APIs: What they are and the differences between them. How Dan, Eric, and Justus’s thinking about designing and application architecture has evolved. Object-oriented programming versus functional: Our take on the age-old debate. Is this finally the year that we get to kill micro-services? The relationship between team size and micro-services and some other constraints. What the future has in store for applications and architecting. Pattern-matching with Todd: Five questions to get to know Connor Rigby a bit better. Have you ever had a DTR conversation with a friend? While it still might be common to have a conversation where you define the relationship with someone you are dating, it is not necessarily a thing many of us do in our friendships. Lindsay and Lyndan didn’t let that stop them from having their own DTR convo though. These two unlikely friends are breaking the mold  with their authentic friendship and we love it. Lindsay and Lyndan have so much to say about how to build and maintain a safe and deep friendship in today’s episode. You really don’t want to miss out on hearing their inspiring friendship story today! Lindsay is a coach’s wife, twin mom, and the Director of Development & Operations for Polished Ministries. She is passionate about the work she gets to do! With a bachelor’s degree in writing and a minor in theology from the University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, SD, Lindsay loves that she gets to combine her skills with her work in a meaningful way. Like many of her peers post-graduation, Lindsay struggled to find a job. She had the degree, but lacked the experience most employers wanted. After working as a personal nanny for two years and an administrative assistant at her church for several years after that, she made a transition home to care for her first baby. It didn't take long for Lindsay to realize God calling her to re-enter the workplace & serve her peers through Polished alongside Kat. She loves being a mom AND getting to work for an organization she deeply believes in. When Lindsay isn't working, spending time with her husband, or caring for her little people (which is almost never), Lindsay enjoys reading alone, being outside, and time with her dearest friends! Lindsay and Tony live in Dallas, TX, with their 4 littles (3, 2, & 1-year-old twins). Born and raised in Texas twig towns, Lyndan has a passion for helping others and working behind the scenes. Starting as the mail girl for a large corporation, she has braved business coaching, served as an executive assistant, and is currently Operations Manager at PyxisCare Management.  Outside of the office, Lyndan thrives when counseling Christian teens every summer and winter break in central Texas, getting to grow with her church family in Arlington, and asking hard questions. Joining Polished Fort Worth was the perfect outlet for pouring into others while creating deep and meaningful connections to do life well - together.  On any given evening, you can find her knee-deep in discussion with her small-group Bible study or exploring downtown Fort Worth for local food shops. She also appreciates the value of a quiet night in, cozied up with a good book, coffee in hand. She dreams of a day when I-35 is free of construction, all cars are equipped with seat warmers, and Hallmark holiday movies are acceptable year round. If your company isn’t developing software, just wait five minutes.   Many companies that never dreamed they’d be developing their own software are having to “roll their own.” Sometimes it’s an internal use only, as a custom layer over an existing platform like Salesforce, sometimes as a product they’re selling.   All this development means having to create your own development operations team. In this episode Zeke and Matt talk about "operationalizing" parts of the product development process. This idea and way of working is becoming more and more prevalent in our industry. This may be new to many people out there (Matt included) so let's define just what this means and explore the possibilities. Dev Ops is likely a term you've heard before (though perhaps the definition was a bit hazy). And maybe the same goes for Design Ops (though this term is a little newer). The fruits of working in this way has turned out to be pretty obvious on the development side of things, but can we apply these same concepts to other parts of the product development process? We sure can and that's exactly what is beginning to happen. Zeke and Matt will dig into what this actually means and how this works in both the design and development portions of any project.
