This week, we are delighted to welcome Matt Higgins to the show. Concisely explaining Matt's career is a challenge. In the world of sport, he has been a managing executive at the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins in the NFL, founder of sports events and media company Relevent Sports, an early investor in the Drone Racing League. In the business world, the story is equally impressive. The youngest press secretary in New York City history, founder of investment first RSE Ventures, one of the sharks on US TV's ‘Shark Tank', Wall Street Journal Bestselling author for his recent book ‘Burn the Boats'. You know on this show that we like to explore what fuels the sports industry through the perspectives of those that live it behind the scenes every day. Matt brings all of that and some, often accompanied by timely anecdotes, alongside the perspective of someone who has lived a life outside of sport. In today's show we discuss: Career in the NFL: Matt held the position of Executive Vice President at the New York Jets and Vice Chairman of the Miami Dolphins. What did these jobs involve? Key revenue streams in NFL franchises - from tickets, to suites, to sponsorships, how do the behind the scenes team maximise the commercial performance of major sports organisations? The importance of adopting new technology and innovative strategy as a sport and an independent franchise. Building and funding the MetLife stadium in New York; from financing to naming rights deals and everything in between. Big money and sport Investment in sport from private equity, nation states, high net worth individuals has been on the rise in recent years. Why? Is private equity good for sport? The importance of retaining control and governance as investment is received. More money is good; less control is not. The importance of having people who have been operators before running the business of a sports entity. You can't learn it from a spreadsheet. Why every franchise or team should have their own fund/financing vehicle. Owning a sports asset provides next level access to deals and the opportunity to become early adopters. A career alongside sports management Setting up investment fund RSE Ventures and investing in/founding organisations like Relevent Sports and Drone Racing League Owning a stake in a pickleball team alongside LeBron James and the opportunity presented by new sports to disrupt the existing ecosystem Matt's attempt to purchase Formula One was eventually unsuccessful when Liberty Media purchased the company. What did he see in the opportunity? Bringing the biggest teams in Europe to the US through the creation of the International Champions Cup. Matt's book 'Burn the Boats' is an amazing read. We highly recommend checking it out here - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Burn-Boats-Overboard-Unleash-Potential/dp/006308886X We are delighted to partner with Tyndall Investment Management for this show. If you're about that hustle culture life then you've either entertained the idea of burning the boats or you already took the leap. Is it necessary though? Is there a link to being successful and leaving yourself no option for retreat? Matt Higgins has been on Shark Tank as one of the sharks, he's vice chairman of the Miami Dolphins, guest lecturer teaching at Harvard, and CEO of a private investment firm, RSE Ventures among other things. His success is mind-blowing and at a level very few people ever achieve. The plot twist is he grew up broke, selling flowers, working at McDonald's and actually made the decision to drop out of high school at 16 years old! He's sharing why Burn the Boats, the title of his latest book, isn't the idea you think it is. Matt points out that 48$ of people have a plan A and believes that when you spend time coming up with Plan B you're more likely to not even give Plan A the effort it deserves and therefore minimize your chance of success. This conversation is about getting real with yourself, facing everything that comes your way,and not retreating to Plan B, C or D. The idea that Matt shares is about being so totally committed to your Plan A that success is the only option. Eliminate choices. Fully commit. Experience new levels of success. QUOTES: “I am the greatest undisputed expert there'll ever be about myself holds true till this day.” “It is 1000% true that the only way to achieve extraordinary things is if you don't have a plan B.” “My boat is a metaphor for the internal and external things that prevent us from fully committing.” “The number one answer to everything is face everything.” “We've lost our way from the celebration of the individual.” “Most people believe that they have to have this approach towards incrementalism and they deny themselves the benefit of reaching really far.” “I'm always trying to put myself in positions that are a tremendous reach.” “If you have a dream do not submit to incrementalism before you've tested the idea of a step change.” “There's a gravitational pull of incrementalism because incrementalism is the only thing for which we have data to validate our choices.” Follow Matt Higgins: Website: https://www.burntheboatsbook.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@BurnTheBoatsBook Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mhiggins/ Click here to download your FREE guide to 100x YOUR EFFICIENCY IN 10 EASY STEPS: https://bit.ly/3F8qOJL Build IRONCLAD discipline in this FREE workshop: https://bit.ly/3RUnYux Sponsors: Visit http://www.RealVision.com/ImpactTheory to save 20% on a full year of access to The Real Vision Academy. When Matt Higgins, Author of "Burn the Boats," was a kid in Queens, you were likely to find him hawking flowers on a street corner or scraping gum off restaurant tables. Today Matt Higgins is co-founder of RSE Ventures, a prominent entrepreneur, investor, and business executive known as a CBS Shark Tank guest. Hear how having limited choices and making bold moves set the board for his success. What Matt remembers about his childhood in Queens is the government cheese, food stamps, and a rodent-chewed mattress. But he also had an example of resilience, as his Mother pursued her GED and got into Queens College. Never one to let circumstances dictate the end, he controlled his destiny by making himself invaluable. From there, he moved on to several high-profile executive positions, including executive positions with the Miami Dolphins and the New York Jets NFL teams. As Matt says, only you have the full context of your life. The only thing you need to believe is your infinite capacity to figure it out. Tune into this conversation for endless insights on overcoming imposter syndrome, leveraging your skills, and why limiting choice is a good thing.

Operator. Investor. Educator. No matter the role, Matt Higgins has always believed in trusting his instincts and never outsourcing his judgment. Higgins grew up in Queens, New York hawking flowers on street corners and scraping gum under tables at McDonald's to help feed his family. On a mission to escape poverty as fast as possible and provide for his home-bound mother, he dropped out of high school, took his GED and enrolled in college at 16 – eventually earning his juris doctorate from Fordham Law at night while working full-time. A decade after dropping out of high school, Higgins was appointed the youngest Mayor's press secretary in NYC history at 26, managing the global media response during the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks under Rudy Guiliani. He then became one of the first employees – and ultimately Chief Operating Officer – of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, created to rebuild the World Trade Center site. Higgins helped organize the largest international design competition in history culminating in Reflecting Absence, the September 11th National Memorial, and the development of the 1,776-feet-tall One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the northern hemisphere. Higgins has deep experience in sports, having spent 15 years in senior leadership positions with National Football League teams. He made his mark with two NFL franchises, overseeing the revenue functions of the New York Jets as Executive Vice President of Business Operations, and after leaving the Jets, serving as Vice Chairman of the Miami Dolphins from 2012 - 2021. Higgins cofounded New York City-based RSE Ventures in 2012 alongside developer Stephen M. Ross, amassing a multi-billion-dollar investment portfolio of leading brands across sports and entertainment, media and marketing, food and lifestyle, and technology industries. NYC's Magnolia Bakery is one of the latest additions to a portfolio that includes David Chang's renowned culinary brand, Momofuku, and Australian-inspired hospitality/lifestyle brand, Bluestone Lane. RSE has successfully backed many challenger brands from inception, including RESY, an Open Table competitor that American Express acquired in 2019; the Drone Racing League, which was named among Fast Company's 10 Most Innovative Sports Companies; and Relevent Sports, the leading international soccer agency in the US. Higgins was the first client and ultimately only partner in VaynerMedia, the largest socialmedia first agency in the world founded by Gary Vaynerchuk. Higgins is a prolific investor in the direct-to-consumer space, having invested in over 100 DTC brands throughout his career. He is a lecturer and Executive Fellow at Harvard Business School, where he teaches the popular course Moving Beyond DTC alongside HBS Professor Len Schlesinger. Each year, the course features real-world case studies on some of the top consumer brands in the US. Higgins' reputation as a self-made serial entrepreneur earned him a spot as a recurring guest Shark on the Emmy award-winning TV show Shark Tank during seasons 10 and 11. He will soon star in a new spinoff also executive produced by Mark Burnett. In 2019, he received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, joining the ranks of seven former US presidents, Nobel Prize winners and other leaders for work to improve society. He is also a longstanding board member of Autism Speaks, advocating for scientific research and greater acceptance of neurodiversity. In 2021, Higgins had a private audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican to discuss human rights and solidarity with the world's poor. During the Global Citizen Live festival before an audience of 60,000 people on the Great Lawn of Central Park, Higgins kicked off the Global Solidarity Fund's initiative to raise $100 million for migrants and refugees in crisis. Matt Higgins, CEO @ RSE Ventures / Vice Chairman @ Miami Dolphins Key Takeaways: 1. Every conversation should start "how can I help you". Investors should think about ways they can relieve their teams of items that have long lead times. 2. The future belongs to the content creators. Build a community and build empathy to your end customer. 3. Teams should look for opportunities to play offense, not just defense. 4. Industries will become more efficient on the other side of this, with tele-medicine adopted much more widely.

STOP PLAYING SMALL. So often we are afraid to go all in. Whether it’s in a relationship, in business, or in an investment, the fear of failure keeps us from fully committing. What a mistake. I’ve had to learn to love failure. I have to consciously tell my brain, “You’re going to fail. And it’s going to be ok.” Take the leap. Make the commitment. Dare to take a stand. If we’re not failing, we are staying too safe. And you won’t grow unless you are constantly making yourself uncomfortable. On today’s episode of The School of Greatness, I dive deep into the idea of going all in when the time is right with one of the most successful investors in the world: Matt Higgins. Matt Higgins is a proven operator, investor and business builder with a knack for helping founders at pivotal growth moments achieve breakout success. He serves as CEO of RSE Ventures, a private firm that incubates and invests in companies across sports and entertainment, food and lifestyle, media and marketing, and technology. Higgins co-founded RSE with Miami Dolphins owner, Stephen M. Ross, the most prominent private developer in the U.S. and a serial entrepreneur. Together Higgins and Ross have helped build enterprises from scratch, including the largest privately owned soccer tournament in the world (International Champions Cup) and leading brand strategy and communications agency Derris. Matt didn’t graduate from high school. He came from a humble beginning but never let that hold him back from getting where he is today. He says that when you do things your own way and you start with a blank page, it’s going to be a lonely journey. You have to trust yourself and be careful about the advice that you take. So get ready to learn what makes Matt a great investor and why certain businesses are winners on Episode 727. Some Questions I Ask: How did you start this business-building fund? (7:00) What are the characteristics of the people you invest in that made them stand out? (9:45) If the product is average but the person is incredible, can there be a massive business? (19:00) What’s the biggest lesson your mom taught you? (44:00) What’s your greatest fear? (46:00) What’s the thing you’re most proud of? (53:00) In This Episode You Will Learn: The two things you need to be a great business leader (10:00) The question Matt asks himself before he invests in a company (12:00) The story of Matt’s first investment (14:00) Matt’s advice for people who are playing small (22:00) Matt’s biggest regrets in business (23:00) What do you do when you go all in but then you fail?
