Orhan Tahir is a Romani lawyer, scholar and journalist, originally from Bulgaria, who has lived in Western Europe for the past 10 years. He is currently engaged as a PhD researcher in Political Science at the Heidelberg University in Germany. Orhan's focus is on the construction of "Gypsies" as an outcast "Pariah people" in European imagination in line with the Orientalist narratives of colonial India, and the impact of this concept on modern perceptions of Roma. He is among the first scholars in Europe to examine the situation of the Roma from the perspective of "caste" - a new approach still unpopular in European academia.Orhan's LinkedInOur Romani crush is the artist and anarchist, Helios GomezSome information about enslaved African's language heritage https://wordscr.com/what-language-did-slaves-speak/https://www.nps.gov/ethnography/aah/aaheritage/sysMeaningA.htm Thank you for listening to Romanistan podcast. You can find us on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook @romanistanpodcast, and on Twitter @romanistanpod. In Part 2 of our convo with Orhan from Reeplayer, we dive deep into the why behind their mission, the flaws in AI-powered analytics, and the human-first approach shaping their future. This isn't just tech—it's heart, hustle, and a whole new way to watch the game.Key Talking Points• The real cost of “free” cameras and feeling stuck• Why Reeplayer refuses to do analytics—and what they do instead• Creating modular cameras to future-proof family investments• The emotional power of video for youth athletes• What it means to be a “media company,” not a “camera company”• How live streaming strengthens family connections• Pricing transparency and mission over margins• Reeplayer's stance on AI and the need for honesty in tech marketing• Positive reinforcement, mental health, and the power of the replay• Building community from the inside out—parents, players, and purpose

As the producer of Chat By The Pitch, I'm thrilled to bring you an inspiring conversation with Orhan Basak Ajredinovski founder of Reeplayer. In this episode, Orhan dives into his personal journey—from playing youth soccer in Turkey and the U.S. to creating a groundbreaking camera system that autonomously records and live streams youth soccer games. We explore how Reeplayer is tackling the challenges of cost, accessibility, and tech complexity in youth sports, offering unlimited recordings for just $99/month. With innovative features like instant processing, built-in SIM cards, and a dynamic mobile app, Reeplayer is redefining how families, coaches, and players capture and share their moments. Orhan's passion for making game footage accessible to all shines through as he discusses the future of youth sports media and its untapped potential.Key Talking Points:• Orhan's Soccer Roots: From playing for Galatasaray in Turkey to moving to the U.S. and rediscovering soccer with an Italian coach named Manu.• The Problem: Youth sports footage is massively under-recorded—over a billion hours go uncaptured annually.• Reeplayer's Origin: Born from Orhan's struggle to get tryout footage as a teen and his market research with Drone FC.• Affordable Innovation: $99/month for unlimited recordings, teams, and users—no tiers, no limits.• Tech Breakdown: Instant processing with a credit-card-sized chip, 4K footage, and AI-driven panning and zooming.• Upload Speed: 5-15 minutes per game upload vs. competitors' hours-long waits.• Built-in SIM Cards: Seamless live streaming with smart connectivity to the strongest cell towers, no extra SIM purchase needed.• Mobile App Features: Live tagging, clip creation, and highlight reel folders for easy sharing.• Future Vision: Replay 3.0 app overhaul in 2025 and a push for youth clubs to monetize streams with ads.• Big Picture: Bringing media and revenue streams to youth sports to rival pro leagues like the NFL.Tune In to Learn:• How Reeplayer's technology simplifies game recording for parents and coaches.• Why instant processing and built-in SIM cards set Reeplayer apart from competitors like Veo and Trace.• How live tagging and the mobile app empower teams to analyze and share key moments in real time.• Orhan's bold vision to transform youth sports into a media-rich, revenue-generating ecosystem.Quotes from Orhan:• "Stories really make the journey more fun and meaningful."• "There's over a billion hours of youth sports footage that are not captured every single damn year."• "We're the only camera company that processes this kind of footage inside of the device."• "Live is the best version of the sports game, and then it's immediately after the game."• "I'm not building for myself—I'm building for our customers, and I've been in their shoes."• "When you turn on the camera, you don't have to worry about whether it's gonna connect."• "We need to catch up the youth soccer space with the rest of the world."• "You just wanna record, man, like you just wanna live stream."• "Every single replay camera has a built-in SIM which means the camera itself is always connected to the cloud."• "Over the span of the season, I'll just create clips and save them into that folder—I in essence have a highlight reel."Connect with Reeplayer:• Official Website: www.reeplayer.com• LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/reeplayer• Instagram: www.instagram.com/reeplayer• X (formerly Twitter): twitter.com/ReeplayerHQFollow Chat By The Pitch:• X: @ChatByThePitch• Instagram: @ChatByThePitch• Facebook: Chat By The PitchSubscribe & Leave a Review:Please subscribe to Chat By The Pitch on your favorite podcast platform and leave us a review. TURKANA FARMS, LLC Green E-Market Bulletin December 3, 2023 Entourage of Affection: Doodle, Sophie and Pepsche up front, Orhan and Skunkie behind Photo by Mark Scherzer Getting RealHi All, Mark here."They're so calm and so healthy looking!" Steve's reaction to the atmosphere in the barn, while here on a brief visit last week, mirrored my sense of things. The sheep do seem remarkably robust, cooperative, orderly, and affectionate. These days, it's a joy to be with the sheep. If they are in the barn when I enter, it is entirely predictable that the two closest to my entry door will be Sophie, a four year old ewe, and Doodle, the by now well-known one year old wether. Both were bottle-fed as lambs. Both are positioned to greet me, looking for a nuzzle, a scratch on the cheek, a hello. They are sometimes accompanied by the senior wether, Orhan, middle aged ewes Pepsche or Skunkie, or one or both of the two oldest ewes in the flock, Nilufer and Lale, who are now past breeding age.Lately, before I even clap my hands and yell "Outside", the rest of the flock pretty automatically files quietly out to the front vestibule as soon as I enter the barn. They know they are supposed to wait there. I shoo my little entourage of sheeply affection out to join them. Then I am then able to refill their water, put hay in the manger, replenish their mineral supplement, and distribute a grain treat in their bowls without them all fighting for access under my feet.Steve speculated that the atmosphere is peaceful thanks to the absence of feisty young ramlings this year. He's right that there's little of the chaotic aggression a couple of the young rams evidenced the prior year until they were sent to market. But is Steve describing the cause or the effect of the overall prevailing atmosphere? I'm not sure. There is still ample testosterone flowing in the flock. I don't always do a fully effective job of banding the testicles of the ram lambs I want to neuter. And there is one fully intact ram, Suleyman III, who I chose to keep as a breeder when he was born last March. Contrary to what you might expect if David Sedaris's essay in last week's New Yorker (The Violence of the Rams) is your idea of an authoritative treatise on sheep psychology, obnoxious ram behavior is not absolutely inevitable. Suleyman has a low-key demeanor, with a quiet authority and no apparent need to constantly prove his ramhood.I didn't say it to Steve, but I like to think that some of the calm atmosphere is conferred by me. Maybe I have unconsciously communicated my own overall contentedness with my life with Eric and my network of good friends to my animals, and it has affected their behavior. Or maybe they are benefiting from my conscious effort to convince them they live in a world of loving security. If looking out from the farm I see chaos, killing, hate and vitriol, then dammit I am going to make sure, for the part of the world I can influence, that order, nurturing and love rule here. And from this, I think, there will be ripple effects in the world at large.I will concede that impartial observers might not see things this way. They might see me as living in something of an eccentric farm fantasy world, and maybe they'd be right. Yesterday, for example, a cloudy Saturday afternoon when I could have been shopping for holiday gifts or insulating windows, I instead, to my great satisfaction, worked in the vegetable garden. The vegetable garden in December? Yup. Just before Thanksgiving, in a spate of house cleaning, I had decided it was time to remove from a hook in the kitchen two remaining bunches of garlic cloves that I had hung there many months ago. These were the smallest bulbs of my garlic harvest, far more trouble to peel and chop than it was worth for culinary purposes. I put them in a colander in the mud room, unsure what to do with them.Yesterday I noticed the colander sitting there. With an unstructured afternoon and relatively balmy temperatures in the 40s, I decided it would be lovely to plant those that still seemed viable. What pleasure: the zen of weeding and preparing the bed; the satisfaction of feeding the weeds to the chickens; the recovery of living seeds from a mess of otherwise compostable waste; and the creation for each clove of a cozy home in the dirt. My mind wandered where it would, which was apparently over my shoulder to pat my back.I gave myself credit in the first instance for not having used the cloves for cooking. To me, that represented maturity. There was a time when I would have carried a single idea -- like "raise what you eat" -- to such an extreme that I would have tried to use even those tiny cloves. But no, even good principles can be carried too far. Better, I ultimately realized, to use nice fat fresh garlic cloves from the market. Then I congratulated myself on using the uneaten cloves as seed garlic. Waste not, want not. I was saving and nurturing small bundles of life. Here, I thought, was my antidote to the death and destruction we contemplate daily.Feh, as my aunt Jennie used to say. Get real. My little garlic seeds may not produce anything at all. My little speculations on the cosmic benefits of what I do here are probably best understood as escapist fantasy. I think it's just my way of grappling with a world full of intractable conflicts that prey on my mind, in which the combatants all believe they have unassailably right views and I can contribute no attainable resolution, just anguished doubt.Stick to the basics. The farm produces some food. People need to eat. That much is undeniably good. Dicle Anter'in sözlerinden bazı satırbaşları şöyle: “Diyarbakır'a gitme” uyarılarını neden dinlemedi?

Transcript Every three years, teenagers around the world are tested on their abilities in maths, science and reading, as part of PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment. Basically, it's a way of comparing how well countries are doing when it comes to educating their children.  Because of Covid-19, the latest PISA data we have are from 2018 and what these data show is that in many countries, there are huge differences between children in how well they score, differences that are related to, for example, their parents' level of education (often referred to as socio-economic status), where their parents come from (whether they have an immigrant background), and also the language spoken at home. What causes these differences and when do they emerge? Do we see the same differences for all bilingual children? In this episode of Kletsheads, we're talking about the relationship between bilingualism and academic achievement. To what extent does speaking another language at home affect how well a child does at school? In conversation with researcher Orhan Agirdag, we discover that the performance gap between bilingual students and their monolingual classmates is *not* due to their bilingualism. It is precisely the children who use their home language more that do better at PISA. So what is the reason? According to Orhan, this achievement gap is caused by the way bilingual children are treated in education. We talk about the role of teachers' expectations, a country's educational system, and about using the multicultural capital of bilingual children in school.  Orhan Agirdag is Associate Professor at the Faculty of Psychological and Pedagogical Sciences of KU Leuven and at the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences of the University of Amsterdam.  He has more than 100 publications to his name on all kinds of subjects concerning bilingualism and education. If you want to know more about his research and about the topics he discussed in the podcast, and you read Dutch, then read his book, Onderwijs in een gekleurde samenleving.  In this episode I also share another Kletsheads Quick and Easy with you, a concrete tip that you can put to use straightaway to make a success of the bilingualism in your family, class or clinic. This episode's tip is to play a game with your child. It's a tip taken from the resources provided by the PEACH project.  The PEACH project is a European project supporting families raising bilingual and multilingual children by creating a handbook for parents and educators as well as informative videos and a whole host of free resources for you to use (be sure to scroll to the bottom of the page!). As I mentioned in the podcast, there are even pictures you can download to turn into jigsaw puzzles to play with your child whilst speaking your hertiage language. It's well worth a look!
