Send us Fan MailThe fastest way to lose your kid is to win every argument and miss every moment that mattered. We sit down with John Hearn, a Georgia Bulldog, dad of three, and COO and Atlanta president at IMA Financial Group, to talk about what real leadership looks like when the audience is your family and they are watching everything. We start with gratitude and a grounded definition of success: not perfect grades, not constant trophies, but kids who grow into independent, good people with strong character and faith. John gives one of the most useful mindset shifts we have heard on parenting and resilience: happiness rises and falls with circumstances, but joy is a deeper perspective that can stay steady even when life gets hard. That difference changes how we coach our kids through setbacks, injuries, disappointment, and uncertainty. From there we get highly practical: how to build EQ over IQ, why asking better questions at the dinner table forms confident communicators, and what “giving without keeping score” looks like in both family life and relationship-based business leadership. We also dig into AI, social media, and the pace of change, and why human connection, curiosity, and critical thinking will be the skills that still matter five years from now.If you want parenting advice you can use tonight, you will love John's approach to “safe struggle” and raising resilient kids without coddling them. Does dinnertime feel like the most stressful part of your day? Maybe your toddler refuses dinner, takes three bites and declares they're done, or suddenly becomes ravenous right as you're starting the bedtime routine. Allison is joined by pediatric dietitian Kathy O'Bryan to discuss one of the biggest sources of stress for parents of toddlers: mealtime. Kathy shares practical strategies to help parents take the pressure off dinnertime, understand what normal toddler eating actually looks like, and build healthy feeding habits that support both nutrition and family connection. Together, Allison and Kathy discuss why parents shouldn't put all of their eggs in the dinnertime basket, how daycare schedules can affect evening eating habits, and why a successful meal isn't always measured by how much your child eats. They also explore the connection between feeding, sleep, routines, and reducing the mental load that so many parents carry around meals. In this episode, you'll learn: • Why toddlers often eat less at dinner than parents expect • How to evaluate your child's nutrition over days and weeks, not individual meals • What "successful" mealtimes really look like • How to reduce pressure around picky eating • Why family meals matter even when life feels busy • Simple ways to make dinnertime feel less stressful and more connected • How your own nutrition and self-care affect your parenting Whether you're navigating picky eating, dinnertime battles, or simply wondering if your toddler is eating enough, this conversation will leave you feeling more confident and less stressed. Ned and Meg discuss the phenomenon of decision fatigue as it relates to dinnertime. It's a cruel trick that at the end of a day of decisions, one still must decide what to have for dinner, and at a time when one is most incapable of making choices. Is this a cultural disease? Is this why we have restaurant delivery from horrible companies who are bottoming out our economy? Also, crab parasites, WTF. Thanks for listening, wash your hands, don't be a dick.

Kitchen hacks to save time: how to freeze flavour cubes of onion, garlic and leek for gut- and liver-friendly cooking. Ever hit 5:00 pm and suddenly realize… you have no idea what's for dinner?
As a child reader, I always thought it was so quaint that "dinner" was this old-timey word for lunch. It was a "Dinner Pail" - which was a crude Indian Tiffin - only 1 chamber - vs. a Lunch Box.But I had never spent any tme thinking about why and how Dinner was the big meal of the day, and supper was toast dipped in cooling stew.Until I thought about it in terms of cooking in the dark. When the sun goes down at 4:25 pm, why was anyone making all manner of food they can't see!?But - the Whale as Light in the early 1800's started to make it's mark. Sure factories were changing the rhythm of life, but without artificial light to support the change, it never would have taken. The age of sail was also the Age of the Pursuit of the Whale. So come join the chase.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot comThreads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood
