As we continue reading the final message of Jesus in Revelation we reflect on how much heart searching it has caused believers in every generation.       It's wonderful visions of an ultimate age of perfection and glory are balanced by the awesome series of woes beforehand. The last 1900 years bear testimony to the judgements that were predicted – but so many crisis have been the natural results of man's follies and blindness toward God.   For many in this present age, especially the young, it is hard to relate to the woes and disasters which many chapters describe.  For one thing they are portrayed in largely symbolic language, for another, nearly all the present generation have not personally experienced fearful times of crisis. Our TV screens have been making them real, but the trouble is, so much of it is fiction, it does not seem real.  Added to this, Computer war ‘games' have desensitized so many to the awesomeness of it all.  A few still exist who can remember being huddled into shelters with schoolmates because of “flying bombs” – also seeing gangs of workers under guard because they were ‘prisoners of war' – they also experienced the urgent noise of anti-aircraft guns trying to shoot down enemy planes.   We know that awesome weapons of mass destruction exist – and there are powerful rockets able to deliver them, but it's a threat we have become used to.  After the collapse of Communism over 20 years ago, everything seemed rather good, but it has not lasted!       Today's political instability and disharmony between nations, with an impotent “disUnited Nations” unable to do anything other than talk, is worrying to some; but unless it affects them personally most people ignore what is happening.  We read today in Revelation, “Woe, woe, woe to those who dwell on the earth” [8 v.13], and the people who suffer that “Woe” are “those people who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.” [9 v.4]  But those who do have that seal “are before the throne of God … for the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” [7 v.15,17]  When the real day of “woe” arrives will you possess “the seal of God”? The assessment of the Ukrainians and their success comes partly from Russia's inability to achieve key objectives, such as seizing Kyiv or achieving air superiority over Ukraine. It also comes from tracking the sheer number of tanks and armored vehicles that the Russians have lost--often several of each for every single Ukrainian example that is lost. While this ratio may seem impressive--and it absolutely is--there is a key piece of context that is lost. The Russians have so, so, so many tanks and armored vehicles to continue to toss at Ukraine, whereas Kyiv is reliant on the goodwill of the United States and its European partners to keep them afloat. Wars of atrition might not be new to the Russians, but that doesn't mean it's a comfortable place for Moscow to fight from. Russia has to remain very sensitive to the number of soldiers it is losing in the war. Beyond the staggering number of Russian military commanders the Ukrainians have been able to eliminate, Russian conscripts are also falling at an alarming rate. Moscow has to balance against public sentiment shifting quickly against the Ukraine war, but also minding the reality that it only has a finite number of young men at any time to operate its tanks and armored vehicles. The Ukraine War is going to be a drawn out endurance game, between the Ukrainian military and its vital foreign suppliers, and a Russian military sitting atop vast (albeit aging) stores of materiel. The reality is that there's no easy path to get there, despite what some US Senators or leaders within the European Union might want. There has been a near constant stream of chatter from elected officials, talking heads, and regular citizens asking why (or, in some cases, pleading) Russia's cabal of oligarchs don't simply... eliminate Putin from the equation. I'll save you from the messier details of how some plans would go, but history is rife with examples of palace coups that remove this or that blundering leader. Russia is not likely to be one of those places. For one, Russia's oligarchs derive their legitimacy and ability to operate (read: plunder) directly from Putin. Oligarchs may have their own relatively small patronage systems, but they don't have the support of the Russian people. Which brings us to a more important point: the Russian military, intelligence services, and Russian people are still largely supportive of Putin. While this may change, this is something we can't gloss over. There is still considerable institutional support around Putin. And while less critical, there is the very important fact that the current stock of oligarchs range from inept, to incredibly corrupt, to cowardly, to reviled. And these are their good points. Whatever Putin is, he's not stupid. And none of the individuals he handpicked to develop (read: plunder) the Russian state's industries and resources was someone who could one day mount a reasonable challenge to his authority.   How Russia Will Die. Or #NATO Or some combination, but with the United States ultimately bearing the brunt of responsibility. It isn't particularly new, either; #Russia and a whole constellation of international relations theorists and political scientists and peaceniks and Russia apologists have been making it for decades. I'm not confused by why it's happening. It's absolutely in Russia's interest to try and make the international community see its actions as reasonable and justified. I'm just confused that anyone believes it. At the crux of the argument is a belief that the violent party (in this instance, Russia) has to lash out, and that the victim, (here, #Ukraine )has somehow been asking for it. If this kind of framing makes your skin crawl, it should: Russia is an expansionist imperial power looking to justify its state violence against its neighbors by making it their fault. Which brings us to another inconvenient truth: those who decry NATO expansion, or are quick to believe Moscow's propaganda - that allowing former Soviet states to pursue a the path of free market democracies is a prelude to US military expansion - ignore Russian history. There is no conflict that Russian Vladimir Putin has participated in that doesn't have a Soviet or Tsarist analogue. Russia has been in a near constant state of war or military expansionism since the 1500s. This is partly explained by the insecurity of the Russian core's borders. NATO expansion didn't provide the reason or excuse for Moscow's current actions. But it does provide those in the way of Russian tanks the opportunity of collective self-defense. I've heard from several corners that this somehow means the Russian ruble is now a gold-backed currency. This is simply not true. Nor does it mean that the Russian Central Bank - and, broadly speaking, the Russian economy - is not in a place of desperation. Russia is a hoarder of gold. Russia is also a significant producer and exporter of gold ores and boullion. Russia has the gold to prop up its currency for the short term, but instead the central bank is engaged in a very different game: replacing the ruble with an untraceable medium of trade. To do that the RCB needs more gold. A lot more. And so the Bank is competing with Russia's own citizens in buying gold and dumping the ruble. The task facing Russian Central Bank Chief Elvira Nabiullina - who I am on the record saying is likely the smartest central banker currently working in the world - is not an easy one. While the ruble's free fall was largely halted and corrected, Moscow must cover imports, fund its activities abroad, stabilize its currency, and find inventive ways to prop up strategic industries and secure whatever export income in can. All this in the face of the most comprehensive sanctions program in modern history. When Food and #energy Fuel Crises Meet by Peter Zeihan on April 12, 2022 The Biden Administration announced this morning that it was working with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to make changes to the laws regarding E15 fuel, or gasoline containing up to 15% ethanol. Retailers are allowed to sell an E10 blend (with up to 10% ethanol) year round, but E15 is usually banned from June 1 through September 15--peak automobile travel months in the United States. This is due primarily to concerns over the fuel's stability in higher temperatures and disputed data about E15's increased emissions and deleterious impact on air quality. The Biden administration's primarily goal here is to help reverse the climb of fuel prices across the United States, a trend that has been exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The White House estimates that the mix of ethanol in the US fuel supply should knock a few cents off a gallon at the pump. No disputes there. The issue comes that the US ethanol supply is made primarily from corn. (Some 40% of US corn production ultimately ends up as ethanol in E10 and E15 fuel blends.) What does the future look like? We are living through a transition between epochs. Whether marked by COVID-19, the election of Donald Trump or earlier by the global sub-prime crisis, the golden age of post-Cold War prosperity is ending. With the era defined by US political, cultural and economic hegemony, its decline is inextricably linked to the decline in US influence. Is the twenty first century really going to be the “Asian century” as China's growth continues unabated? Or perhaps African, given by far the largest forecast population growth? What will become of the US? Of China and Russia and Europe? Two thinkers have sought to define this future.    I first came across Bruno Maçães in 2017 on Marginal Revolution where Tyler Cowen was effusive about Maçães' new book. I have enjoyed following his conversations and thoughts ever since, but it was only recently that I read Dawn of Eurasia. It is the first book of a career politician and diplomat clearly in love with his continent. Peter Zeihan I came across on Patrick O'Shaughnessy's excellent podcast. His brash prophesy and contrarian views on geopolitics are hypnotic and endlessly fascinating. Disunited Nations is his latest in a series that documents the rise and rise of US power.  I found comparing them irresistible. Each lingers after reading. It's that wonderful feeling of discovering a new area of knowledge to mine. Not natural companions, and mesmerising in their own ways, each story has a different texture and plots a different path for the world. Where one sees pessimistic reversion to a historic state of conflict, the other sees hopeful evolution. Where one deterministically condemns nations to their geographic destinies, the other sees each nation's destiny as unwritten, yet to be informed by its history, literature and peoples.   Both Peter Zeihan and Bruno Maçães see US influence receding. But they agree on little else. Zeihan is deeply pessimistic about a world that awaits a more isolationist US, with a crumbling world order leaving less room for prosperity and reverting to nation-states jostling for food, energy and military security.
