February is Black History Month in the United States, and the TennisWorthy podcast explores the theme of boldness in tennis. Patrick McEnroe and Chris Bowers highlight the courageous journeys of three African-American tennis legends—Althea Gibson, Arthur Ashe, and their mentor Dr. Robert Johnson. Chris narrates their struggles and triumphs, starting with Gibson, who broke racial barriers in the 1950s with the help of Alice Marble's advocacy. Gibson's journey from segregation-era challenges to winning major titles and transitioning to professional sports is a testament to her resilience. He also sheds light on Dr. Robert Johnson, who mentored both Gibson and Ashe, providing a foundation for Black tennis players through his strict training regimen and commitment to integrating the sport.Ashe's story, particularly his historic trip to apartheid South Africa in 1973, highlights his unique approach to activism—using his talent rather than vocal protest to make a statement. His presence in South Africa was seen as both inspiring and controversial, as he insisted on integrating the tournament stadium and meeting Black communities despite government restrictions. The memories of several close to him - Donald Dell, Mark Mathabane and Owen Williams - highlight Ashe's influence extended beyond the court, with his visit leaving a lasting impact on the fight against apartheid. The International Tennis Hall of Fame thanks the Arthur Ashe Legacy at UCLA and Oral History Project Director Yolanda Hester for contributions to this episode:Mark Mathabane, interviewed by Yolanda Hester, Sept 4, 2020, for the Arthur Ashe Oral History Project an initiative of Arthur Ashe Legacy at UCLA. From Emmy® Award-winner Rex Miller and Academy Award®-nominated and Emmy® Award-winning filmmaker Sam Pollard comes a new documentary about the first male African American, CITIZEN ASHE. The film is an exploration of the legacy of tennis great and humanitarian Arthur Ashe. Ashe, who would have turned 78 last month, died of AIDS-related complications in 1993. His storied tennis career is only surpassed in esteem by his off-court activism on behalf of civil rights, global human rights, and compassion for those afflicted by HIV. Using a blend of archival newsreel and family footage, Miller and Pollard take viewers along Ashe's personal evolution, beginning with a youth deeply influenced by his early tennis mentor and the death of his mother. His elegant technical form helped him play at the highest of elite levels in tennis, a sport which, even today, has few non-white professional players. Contemporary interviews with Ashe's widow, Jeanne Moutousammy-Ashe, his brother, Johnnie Ashe, as well as fellow tennis legends Billie Jean King, John McEnroe, Donald Dell, and Lenny Simpson, and activist Prof. Harry Edwards, illustrate the cultural resonance of his historic Grand Slam wins, and how he managed a quiet, stoic dignity in public, despite the racism he endured throughout his life and career. He really is an inspiration who used his celebrity to focus attention on injustice in America, and beyond. Co-director Rex Miller (Sam Pollard) joins us to talk about the life and times of the country's greatest male African-American tennis champion and a humanitarian of the highest order. For news and screening go to: magpictures.com/citizenashe Citizen Ashe is playing theatrically on December 3rd in NYC and December 10th in LA.

"I think athletes, if they are organized, can be the biggest element of change of anybody because they have a platform. They can stand up and talk everyday and people want to cover them." As tennis' first sports agent Donald Dell has a lot of insight on how far the sport has come, and how much farther it has to go. The Hall of Famer joins the TENNIS.com Podcast this week to talk about why a tour merger is necessary, how he helped push for prize money at the start of the Open era, what his relationship with Arthur Ashe was like and how he ended up working for Robert F. Kennedy. After his own career, Dell became the youngest Davis Cup captain at 29 and led the U.S. team to victory in 1968 and '69. His talented Davis Cup team included Stan Smith and Arthur Ashe, who he would represent for decades. Ashe and Dell's relationship is rich, with Ashe once referring to Dell as one of the two people in the world he would trust with his life, along with his own father. Beyond getting his athletes the best deals, Dell has been a strong proponent of growing tennis, and pushing for a more cohesive tour system. That goal hasn't changed one bit over 50-plus years. "There are a few people in the world you can say you’ve known for over 50 years and Donald Dell is one of them." says Our Town host Andy Ockershausen. Donald Dell, Tennis Icon Andy reads a description of Donald Dell from a Washington Post article that pretty much sums up who he is: Arguably the most powerful man in his sport, Dell is a political animal. He was an advance man for Robert Kennedy in 1966 and in RFK's presidential campaign in 1968, and in style and substance he remains a Kennedy man, equally idealistic and well-versed in practical politics. He has Establishment credentials - Landon School '56, Yale '60, Virginia Law '64 - but can wear brass sknuckles with his Ivy League suit. He is polished, sometimes charming, but not bashful about using strong-arm tactics. As a sports agent and founder of ProServ (now known as SFX), he’s represented some of the biggest names in sports such as Michael Jordan, Arthur Ashe, Moses Malone, Stan Smith, James Worthy, and John Lucas . . .In 1972, Jack Kramer and Donald Dell founded the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). The bylaws were written in Dell's offices, and he was the first Executive Director. He ran the ATV and was the general counsel for eight year. Donald Dell as a Tennis Player, Advance Man for RFK and Lawyer As the youngest captain ever of the US Davis Cup Team, Donald talks about the early years and how he got started in tennis. He was fortunate to have lived across the street in Bethesda from Edgemoor Tennis Club. “I lived about 50 yards away from the club and I’d play all day long, all summer long.” Andy added that Edgemoor was a hotbed of good players like Fred McNair and Fred Kovaleski. One of the great things about Edgemoor was that they had a rule, if you were a good player - highly ranked, you could get right in without having to wait, so that great players wanted to play there and Donald got the benefit of playing with the best in the sport. Playing championship tennis opened the world up to Donald to associate with movers and shakers which allowed him to take advantage of opportunities he wouldn't have otherwise. He tells a funny story about his experiences as a player in Russia, over the course of 4 years, Donald went to Russia 8 times. He was approached by the CIA to help with the defection of two top Russian players. Just as he was about to close the deal to help one of the players defect, his Russian player came home to find his beautiful wife in bed with the gym teacher. The player pulled a gun out of the night stand and shot the teacher dead. The Russian was sentence to 8 years in jail. The late Robert Kennedy was a very dear friend of Donald's. Kennedy hired Donald as his advance man of his 1968 presidential campaign. Donald was responsible for hiring Rosie Greer and other football players as part of his security detail. Bobby and his wife Ethel loved tennis and Donald played with them on a regular basis and taught him how to hit a backhand. Andy asked about Donald’s decision to go out on his own after his former law firm invited him to set up shop at Hogan & Hartson representing top tennis players. Donald said, “I decided to do my own thing with one other person." "I was really ironically the first tennis agent anywhere in the world January 1970, when I retired from the Davis Cup. . . what really helped me the most was having been a player, and being a winning captain on the Davis Cup Team." Gonzales v. Pasarell, Wooden Tennis Rackets Andy and Donald swap stories about the two day, no tie breaker Wimbeldon match between 41 year old Pancho Gonzales and a much younger Charlie Pasarell. At the time it was the longest match in history of Wimbledon. Donald and Andy continue to discuss the way tennis has changed in the past 40 years. Donald remarked that the game was all different then - equipment, surface, and how the players play, are the difference. The matches were also much shorter.

Following the withdrawal of several golfers from this year’s Olympic competition, including the world number one Jason Day, we ask if golf should be an Olympic discipline at all. Former pro Dottie Pepper tells us that it shouldn’t and that “the Olympics needs golf more than golf need the Olympics”, all of which is likely to annoy the chairman of the Professional Squash Association Ziad Al-Turki, who joins us too. Formula One: The Archduke of the Austrian Grand Prix When Austria played Hungary at Euro 2016 we spoke to Ferdinand Habsburg, who just happens to not only be the Archduke of Austria but also the Crown Prince of Hungary. But Ferdinand's real passion is motor sport, and at 19 years of age he's already competing in Formula 2.0. So with the Austria Grand Prix on Sunday - we've brought the Archduke of Austria, or Ferdinand as he lets me call him - back to the studio. Pat Summit: The Life and Legacy of a Legend Legendary basketball coach Pat Summitt died this week at the age of 64, five years after she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. Pat won two Olympic medals, silver as a player in 1976, and gold as a coach at the 1984 games in Los Angeles. Off the court she had a profound impact on empowering women in sport, culminating in being awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Under her guidance the University of Tennessee recorded over a thousand victories, the most in college basketball history, for any coach - man or woman. Olympic gold medallist Kara Lawson played under Summitt at Tennessee and is chair of the Pat Summitt Foundation. Winners: In the lead up to the Olympic Games we're bringing you the stories of six women from around the world and how they came to excel at their sport. All the obstacles, failures and triumphs along the way. In the second of our series, we hear from Dipa Karmakar, a gymnast from India. When Dipa first competed, she had to borrow an oversized, ill-fitting costume. Her sport has little financial backing in India, and so her bronze medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games is even more remarkable. E-games in Rio: From a sport like golf with a seemingly lukewarm attitude to the Games, to one that's so determined to establish its Olympic credentials, it's organising its own competition in Rio in August! That sport is 'eGames' and comprises the very best video-game players from around the world. Sportshour's Austin Halewood looks at this new tournament which will offer medals and national pride rather than cash prizes for the winners.
