Will we be rebranding soon to the 6G Guys? Our guest today may have the answer! We had the pleasure of hosting Doug Kirkpatrick, CEO and co-founder of Eridan, who shared fascinating insights about their game-changing technology, Miracle RFFE (Radio Frequency Front-End). This groundbreaking innovation aims to transform wireless radio technology and could potentially lay the foundation for the next generation of wireless networks. Miracle RFFE brings a plethora of improvements to the table. With this technology, radio transmitters could use 7-8 times less power, be 3x smaller and lighter, and increase spectrum utilization by an impressive 10 fold. These advancements could lead to longer battery life for devices, faster and more reliable connections, and impact a wide range of applications, from smartphones and IoT devices to autonomous vehicles and satellite communications.  During our podcast, Kirkpatrick elaborated on the potential implications of Miracle RFFE for the future of wireless networks, including the much-anticipated 6G. John Thompson of The PCO Group returns with his passion for unleashing intrinsic motivation, which has a critical role in the human state, and therefore plays out into a team and more broadly into an organization. When tapping into intrinsic motivation, there is “no difference between being a leader and being human” since every human has leadership within them. This principle is the foundation of John's proposal of breaking apart the 3 roles of a traditional manager - subject matter expert, developing humans, and team organization. We cover designing for intrinsic motivation by splitting the manager (boss) role into three roles, how being bossless creates opportunities not threats, and having facilitators show up as bosses disappear. There is a lot of discussion about increasing social and emotional intelligence, showing up with more wholeness as Frederic Laloux popularizes, vulnerability and taking off your armor as Brene Brown encourages. This is just to mention a few. But how do we put this into practice, esspecitally at work, where the title pyramid hierarchy - visibly and invisibly - often gets in the way? John Thompson founded The PCO Group to address this very issue. PCO – people centric organizations. His unique approach to fostering human development - the combination of emotional social and leadership intelligence - goes arm in arm with restructuring the role of “manager” in an organization. John proposes transferring some of the “manager” roles to other colleagues (such as the organizational' and governance roles) and to embedded coaches who facilitate and ultimately unlock the intrinsic motivation that lies within all of us. He talks about facilitated roles vs power roles, putting trust in the process, continuous practice (learning in the moment and applying immediately what you've just learned), how a facilitated team naturally addresses inclusion, and C-suite leaders being very uncomfortable high in the Swiss Alps. Ultimately he invites managers to let go of their traditional manager roles and colleagues to pick up some of those roles - and why this is good for everyone. This is one of two episodes. There is a companion Episode 7 with Sonja Robinson where we talk about peer coaching. One of the observations was that people drive into the parking lot, park their car and come into work. We realised that every one of these individuals is a manager already in his or her own personal life so every one of those individuals is making gigantic life-altering decisions on their own without a boss. Their deciding who to date, who to marry, what to do for a living whether to take out a mortgage or have kids or whatever” – 03.20 - “I am adding zero value to this process, in fact it is negative value because there is an opportunity cost associated with the time and effort involved so he (managing partner) came down the hall and dropped the checks off on my desk” – 04.50 - “The Morningstar team principles essentially boiled down to two very simple things. First, human beings should not use force or coercion against other human beings. The second principle is that people should keep the commitments they make to each other” – 07.25 - “We basically changed the cost structure of our entire industry at that moment and we did it without ever deviating from our two principles; don’t use force and keep commitments. We became the largest tomato processor in the world (Morningstar)” – 09.45 Bio: As a partner in NuFocus Strategic Group, I now speak and consult on self-management around the world. In this Shane Hastie, Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, spoke to Doug Kirkpatrick at the Agile People conference in Stockholm, Sweden, about what self-management actually means for the people in an organisation. Why listen to this podcast: • Self-management enables everyone in the organisation to thrive and do their best work • It’s not about layers of control, rather it’s dense networks of committed self-managers guided by a clear set of principles • It’s the responsibility of each self-manager to guide their own career • Decision rights come down to who is the best person to make that particular decision • Great organisation culture is one where people are happy, free to do their best work, engaged in high levels of good, effective collaboration and are able to contribute to the world More on this: Quick scan our curated show notes on InfoQ https://bit.ly/2DHpq0a You can also subscribe to the InfoQ newsletter to receive weekly updates on the hottest topics from professional software development. bit.ly/24x3IVq Subscribe: www.youtube.com/infoq Like InfoQ on Facebook: bit.ly/2jmlyG8 Follow on Twitter: twitter.com/InfoQ Follow on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/company/infoq Check the landing page on InfoQ: https://bit.ly/2DHpq0a

27 years ago, the founder of Morningstar sat his then-small staff down to share his idea for core principles as a foundation that they could grow an enterprise upon. Organizational consultant Doug Kirkpatrick was in that small group, and today Morningstar's two founding principles are still at the core of what is now the largest demand processor in the world:1. People shouldn’t use force or coercion against each other.2. People should honor the commitments they make to each other. Doug has turned his experience into a career, having authored "Beyond Empowerment: The Age of the Self-Managed Organization" and begun the Self-Management institute. The interest in updating organizational management has exploded worldwide, driven in part by technology but also by people's desire to enjoy their work and be autonomous and self-managing. Leaders are now looking around at how the world of work is changing and realizing that they need to understand this change because it affects their business. Doug offers advice to executives and middle managers, and also shares his thoughts on Gary Hamil's "management tax".SolutionsIQ's Josh Fruit hosts at Business Agility 2017 in New York City.About Agile AmpedThe Agile Amped podcast series brings Agile news and events to life. In this podcast Shane Hastie, InfoQ Lead Editor for Culture & Methods, spoke to Doug Kirkpatrick, organisational change expert, author and advocate for new ways of working. Why listen to this podcast: • Decentralization is replacing hierarchy and bureaucracy. Organisations need to be directly connected to the outside world and agilely adapt to changes in their ecosystems • The idea of people managing other people will fade and be replaced by people connecting to a mission and meaning, and managing themselves in the same way they manage themselves in their lives • Mandating a change is command and control in a different guise – people need to be part of the change and opt in to be part of the changed organisation • Two simple, yet profound, principles: o No use of force – abandon command and control authority o People keep commitments that they make • Speaking up when something seems wrong is a crucial self-managing competency.
