In this episode of Career Can Do, Mary Ann Faremouth chats with Andrea Sanchez. Andrea is Director of Communications at ENGIE North America, where she oversees internal and external communications efforts for over 1600 employees. She is also Community Ambassador at HumansFirst, and Executive Director at SparkStory. Andrea works with a humanitarian effort to create a more harmonious work environment and bring a ‘we' mentality to corporate culture. She talks about human connection in the workplace, and how she is creating spaces for authenticity.  All workplaces start with people, but we tend to lose sight of that because we focus so much on business, Andrea shares. The people are what make workplaces successful, and when it comes to people, emotions are key. The more we can have respect, understanding, and compassion for others, the better we are going to be and the bigger contribution we're going to be able to make, Mary Ann adds. Andrea started her online rally, initially called A Rally for Equality, as a way to spread good amidst the social unrest of June 2020. Since then, it has exploded into a vehicle for authenticity, kindness, and connecting with other people. “It grew to be more like A Hope and Kindness Rally, and I call it that because I want to remind people that there is hope regardless of what you've been through, and we show up because we want to be kind to each other,” Andrea says. Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

John Dunia didn't become the Shame Doctor overnight. His journey from a junior high kid discovering his love for music to releasing his first book took years, and the struggle of his 22-year-old marriage falling apart was a catalyst in his personal growth and professional career shift. He found writing his novel was a time to self-reflect and contemplate the experiences that brought him to where he is today, and believed that sharing those experiences could guide others to find relief from self-doubt and anger. The moments that sparked the passion in John's life are something we all have encountered whether we realize it or not. For John, one of those moments was listening to Switched-on-Bach in high school, an encounter that changed the course of his life. For John, different experiences, from meeting with a therapist to listening to his friend's older brother's music, influenced the way he perceived the world. Today's podcast episode starts with John's stories about being a band teacher. This is the beginning to the discussion about John's life and the moments that brought him clarity.   --- About John:  John Dunia is the author of “Shame on Me”, a Principle at Shamedoctor.com, and a public speaker helping others find their purpose. John is also an ambassador for HumansFirst, a featured writer & columnist for BIZCATALYST 360°, and a sales representative for several companies.  John attended California State University with a Bachelor's degree in Music Performance. He also attended Pasadena City College.  Visit John's website, take his self assessment, and follow John on LinkedIn and Facebook to learn more! *podcast show notes contributed by Tracy Ackeret --- ABOUT SARAH: "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana.

Welcome to Difficult Conversations with Dr. Anthony Orsini. Today, my special guest is Mike Vacanti, Founder of HumansFirst and author of Believership: The Superpower Beyond Leadership. Following many years in advertising and marketing, Mike launched early stage start-ups and led merger and acquisition initiatives for publicly traded tech companies. His teams exceeded expectations, consistently beat the challenge, learned a lot, and as Mike said, “Had some fun along the way.” He believes “It’s much more than what we accomplish, it’s who we become along the journey!” His mission is to lift others, helping people discover their potential, embrace a growth mindset, and achieve at inspired levels. Mike has transformed businesses and inspired people to perform at levels they didn’t think possible. He is known as a great listener and collaborator, and a creative problem-solver. He consistently delivers on the belief that the heart of any organization is people- People drive results! As always, Dr. Orsini keeps his promise about two things, that you will feel inspired, and you will have learned valuable lessons to be a better and more compassionate communicator.Mike tells us about himself and how he went from mergers and acquisitions to transitioning into starting HumansFirst. We learn about these events, who attends them, and how his intent was to help people break patterns. Dr. Orsini and Mike have a discussion on changes in cultures in the workplace and how the younger generations are really driving  change in  the workplace because they want to work for companies that believe in them.  We also find out Mike’s views on improving cultures in companies and why some companies are so open and  some are not, He tells us how essential it is that  leadership  buy into it. Mike tells us about another book he wrote with Teresa Quinlan called, You Belong Here: HumansFirst Stories, which is a compilation of different people’s stories. He shares one of the stories in the book written by Claude Silver, a previous guest on this podcast. This book is full of inspiration and in a world full of so much sadness now, Dr. Orsini says, “Just read it because it will make you feel better!” Mike discusses his other book, Believership:  If you enjoyed this podcast, please hit the follow button.  Host: Dr. Anthony OrsiniGuest:Mike VacantiFor More Information:The Orsini WayThe Orsini Way-FacebookThe Orsini Way-LinkedinThe Orsini Way-InstagramThe Orsini Way-TwitterIt’s All In The Delivery: Improving Healthcare Starting With A Single Conversation by Dr. Anthony OrsiniResources Mentioned:Mike Vacanti TwitterMike Vacanti LinkedinHumansFirst.clubBelievership: The Superpower Beyond Leadership: Volume 1, The Experience by Mike VacantiYou Belong Here: HumansFirst Stories by Mike Vacanti and Teresa QuinlanThe Orsini Way-Podcast-Episode 107-Claude Silver

The weekly #HumansFirst open and inclusive calls can all be found here -> https://humansfirst.club/events Find the Aequip team at https://www.aequip.co.uk/ Today Mike Vacanti hosts a stunning hue-man conversation with Heather Younger, Brooke Erol and Cordelia Gaffer. Bios: Brooke O. Erol started her career at IBM following the traditional path she was given to be "successful". She quit her "great job" on paper after 11 years, feeling she is not aligned with it. She started her journey to find her purpose in life. She started her first business in 2003 YourBestLife to help professionals who don’t like their jobs and want to find more meaning at work. After being around so many unhappy people at work as her clients, she decided to help the organizations and leaders who employed them. She started her second business Purposeful Business to help leaders catch up with our times and grow their businesses without sacrificing the well-being of their people; where profit becomes a by-product rather than the main goal . She believes life is too precious to live only for weekends and retirement. She is the author of Create a Life You Love. She is also the co-author of "From Hierarchy to High Performance: Unleashing the Hidden Superpowers of Ordinary People to Realize Extraordinary Results" that became an International Best Seller in 2018. She speaks and writes about Leadership, Purpose-Driven Life and Organizations, Future of Work in the US and abroad. Hi I'm Cordelia Gaffar, the Emotions Opener Transformation Strategist helping female change makers and entrepreneurs with leaning into difficult emotions so you can show up powerfully! The process to transform your heart so that you can transform your mind is called Replenish Me. It is a complete system of self-nurturing built on nutritional, fitness, scientific and spiritual practices. The steps are Release, Restructure, Refresh and Rebirth 1. Release is Self-compassion and self-forgiveness 2. Restructure is being discipline with habits that support you physically and mentally 3. Refresh is creating firm boundaries and discipline in all your relationships 4. Rebirth is embodying all of it and radiating and attracting what you desire in your life Heather Younger was born to advocate and communicate on behalf of others. I realized early on that many dreams and desires never happen unless we are courageous enough to ask for them consistently and in a compelling way. I also know that some people never have the opportunity to share their voice and are just never invited to have a seat at the decision-making table. I was that person growing up as a kid in a family who shunned me because of my race. My mission is to help organizations give their employees what they want so that those same organizations get what they want in the form of engagement and retention. It has been my experience that organizations are more apt to make poor assumptions about what their employees want. They are screaming to be heard, cared for and want to have a say in what happens to them. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/valuevulnerability/message

We are pleased to share the second of our truly hue-man conversations which included Brian Kelly, Rishita Jones, Kate Griffiths and Tanya Obeng in conversation as we had a wide-ranging conversation taking in race, leadership, education, self-leadership and so much more. The reason that Tanya, Brian, Rihsita, and Kate took part in this conversation was: - “Seeing colour, seeing diversity. Too often people say that they don’t see colour and I know it is meant on a human level, but it is really about connecting with people, seeing people’s differences, appreciating peoples differences and connecting with people on a soul level and appreciating them for who they are” - 02.00 Tanya - “I am excited about the opportunity to expand my perspective, to help us all expand our perspectives, to listen and learn from one another, so that we can come at creating change and taking purposeful action together, from a different place” - 02.55 Brian - “I feel that up until now people have either been active when it comes to racism and D&I or they have been neutral. I want us to move from neutral to a more active stance. I’d like us to understand our own lens, our own frame of reference which shapes our thinking, our beliefs and our actions and I want to go deeper than that as we are all human beings with passions, dreams and desires. We all want to be heard, seen & felt” – 04.00 Rishita - “On the back of a HumansFirst call, I love those calls, but I recognised that my soul was yearning for deeper connection which isn’t as easy to obtain when there are 40 or 50 or 60 people in a call so this really seemed to be heaven sent and when we are processing such complex set of emotions such as shame and all those other things that have come up recently, the way to heal is through more intimate gatherings where we can be ourselves and be open to learn” – 05.20 Kate You can contact each of our guests as follows: Rishita -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/rishita-jones-mcipd/ Kate -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/wholeself/ Tanya -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/tanya-obeng27/ Brian -> https://www.linkedin.com/in/briankellyleadershipcoaching/ Mike can be found via the following means: Email - mike@mjvacanti.com LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mjvacanti/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/MJVacanti Web - https://humansfirst.club/ You can contact me via the following means: Email - garryturner0@hotmail.com Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/414211396 LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/garryinterpersonalcatalyst/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/GarryIPCatalyst --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/valuevulnerability/message

Mike Vacanti (from Humans First) and I talk about the future of work. Let's start with what's wrong: we don't treat people very well at work! Most organisations are set up for competition rather than collaboration, and most of what we see and read is about "getting ahead" - but what if we took a different approach? Giving employees a choice in what they do and how they do it will really drive their motivation. Regarding management: allowing the best people to rise based on their ability to help others around them rise. When it comes to change, start with yourself first! Stop expecting change to come from external sources. Acknowledge and appreciate the uniqueness in yourself and others. Be genuine - share your weaknesses, development areas, low priority strengths (whatever you call them) so that others can help you with your blind spots. You need to believe in the goals of the organisation, and if you don't maybe it's not "your" organisation. Mike believes, “It’s more than what we accomplish – it’s who we become along the journey!” His mission is to Lift Others, helping people discover their potential, embrace a growth mindset and achieve at inspired levels. Mike has transformed businesses and inspired people to perform at levels they didn’t think possible. Mike's known as a great listener and collaborative, creative problem solver. For generating speed and confidence through innovation and transformation. His current endeavors as advisor, consultant and keynote speaker, are shifting the belief in what is possible and opening hearts to a better vision and future of business around the globe. Sharing his extensive career of invention, reinvention and highly complex business combinations, he consistently delivers on the belief that the heart of any organization is People – People drive results. Mike has released his new book, BELIEVERSHIP: The Superpower Beyond Leadership, and is the Founder of HumansFirst. Following many years in advertising and marketing, He launched early stage start-ups & led M&A initiatives for publicly traded tech companies. Five-times he was thrust into the chaos of transformation and helped people navigate the doubt, fear and chaos of significant change. His teams exceeded expectations, consistently beat the challenge, learned a lot and had some fun. www.mjvacanti.com www.humansfirst.club https://www.amazon.com/Believership-Superpower-Beyond-Leadership-Experience/dp/1457571277 My social links: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aoifemobrien https://twitter.com/Empowerment_IE www.instagram.com/empowermentcoaching.ie

My passion to serve others stems from my two fundamental values: Growth and Connectedness. I honour these by accompanying others on their (learning) journey and helping them connect their dots. Yet no-one operates in a bubble. Like someone said to me once: Workplace culture is to people what water is to fish. Not long ago, I was a very hard-working and dedicated fish in a polluted organisational culture… Until I hit burnout: I was showing the very symptoms that I would speak about at my workshops, to enable leaders to recognize how toxic leadership and managerial styles can impact their people. Until Burnout is seen as a key organisational concern and a leadership responsibility, high-performing cultures will remain scarce in our Western culture. Rhys bio: I help Leaders and Business Owners reconnect with their truSELF to realise their true potential and optimise their teams performance through the principles of Conscious Leadership; Connection, Cultivation, Communication, Curiosity, Caring, Co-Creation and Community. Utilising EQ, SQ and Mindset we can work together to actualise your truSELF. By creating the right environment with incisive questioning, generative attention and the principles of deep listening we can identify and transform those limiting self-beliefs in to liberating ones and empower you with self-worth and self-awareness. Learning to focus on the present moment and to always lead with your heart by putting kindness, compassion and gratitude at the forefront of everything you do lifts you and those around you. By committing to a practice of daily personal development, becoming aligned with your core values, unlocking your superpowers and learning to always take intentional action, you will soon be achieving your true purpose! They are more than a bag of skin and bones; they are a source of energy” – 34.20 - “The topic of power is so misconstrued; power is not a bad word. It is not about control, it is about being that source of energy that they (men) need to live a fulfilling live. Which pieces of luggage can we put down and leave behind? What are the values that we really want to embody going forward, both individually and collectively“ – 14.15 - “I am curious about not just the abstract values, but the financial value that we put on things might get shaken up going forward and I hope that we take these opportunities and don’t go back to the same old, same old” - 21.20 - “I like the phrase; strong opinions, lightly held” – 25.55 - “it is important to have beliefs, but also to know that we choose those beliefs and not to mistake them for truth” – 26.05 Roz can be found via the following means: Web - https://www.thegiftsofsolitude.org/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/rozsavage/ Bio: Roz Savage is the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world’s “Big Three” oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. She holds four Guinness World Records, and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to fundraising and the environment. It was an unexpected career move for a former management consultant who doesn’t particularly enjoy exercise. She was inspired to brave the oceans when she realised two things: 1) we are all capable of much more than we tend to believe we are, and 2) we need to make some changes if we're going to live healthy lives on a thriving planet. So she used her voyages to expand her own limits, and to promote sustainable living. She now writes, speaks, and lectures on sustainability, courage, resilience, and change. One of the observations was that people drive into the parking lot, park their car and come into work. We realised that every one of these individuals is a manager already in his or her own personal life so every one of those individuals is making gigantic life-altering decisions on their own without a boss. Their deciding who to date, who to marry, what to do for a living whether to take out a mortgage or have kids or whatever” – 03.20 - “I am adding zero value to this process, in fact it is negative value because there is an opportunity cost associated with the time and effort involved so he (managing partner) came down the hall and dropped the checks off on my desk” – 04.50 - “The Morningstar team principles essentially boiled down to two very simple things. First, human beings should not use force or coercion against other human beings. The second principle is that people should keep the commitments they make to each other” – 07.25 - “We basically changed the cost structure of our entire industry at that moment and we did it without ever deviating from our two principles; don’t use force and keep commitments. We became the largest tomato processor in the world (Morningstar)” – 09.45 Bio: As a partner in NuFocus Strategic Group, I now speak and consult on self-management around the world. Pragmatic, hopeful and challenging of the status quo, Rina has offered some of the most inclusive insight around the inclusion agenda I have come across so far. - “I realised that a lot of people around me have lots and lots to offer, yet the organisation wasn’t equipped with identifying what that extra value was that the individuals have to offer, therefore were not able to tap into it” – 01.20 - “Every disaster, if you will, has a silver lining. It absolutely questions the structure and the process that we adhere to as humans today, as a society today, and that is hopefully what we are starting to question and recognise that there is so much more we could be doing to unleash the human” - 13.45 - “One of the things that I have learned is people are far more complicated than we give them credit for. We are so much deeper than we think we are” – 30.30 - “It is no longer enough to have the smartest person doing the job, if that smartest person looks the like person right next to them and the person right next to them” – 03.20 - “I did notice that they (people performing a role) had a lot more to contribute and I felt like I had a lot more to contribute than what was being asked of me” – 07.10 - “Structure yes, but let’s loosen it up, lets shake up the framework and lets introduce a little bit of ‘flying by the seat of your pants’ and do things that we are not used to or are not comfortable with” – 17.30 - “An inclusive leader, somebody that can be vulnerable and is humble in front of others. Admits to their mistakes and weakness and asks for help from the team” – 21.50 - “The ability to listen. Actually listening to the person, what they are saying, why they are saying it, what is motivating them. Trying to genuinely understand where they are coming from and that requires empathy” – 24.40 Bio: Rina Goldenberg Lynch, Gender Parity Advocate, Founder & CEO, has 20 years of experience as a lawyer. Having started her legal career in Washington DC, she then worked as a banking lawyer with Clifford Chance LLP in London and as a Director in the legal department of ING Bank London. During her career, Rina observed that most organisations had a dominant culture which required - directly or indirectly - every person to adapt. As a result, leaders often failed to realise the full potential of their colleagues, overlooking their colleagues' individual differences as strengths, leaving untapped much talent, dedication and commitment. Mike Vacanti and I had the pleasure of hosting a conversation with Viisi co-founder Tom Van Der Lubbe. We meandered across such a wide range of topics including culture, self-management, leadership, vulnerability, innovation, talent and so much more. Some of the key insights include: - “I wanted to become a diplomat, but I found out pretty quickly that I am not that diplomatic” – 01.40 - “We became entrepreneurs by accident after our subsidiary was closed down” – 02.20 - “We had more or less a recession scenario in place. We just had to take out our crisis scenario from the past” – 04.05 - “During normal times we always have a clear hierarchy. It starts with purpose. The business is not meant to maximise profit, but it should be a multi-stakeholder approach” – 05.50 - “On top of purpose, we want to change the financial sector. It should become more sustainable, more long-term orientated etc We always had a second purpose which was to create a better work environment, putting people first” – 06.00 - “We always have a ‘virtual bench.’ We were always in talks with people that we did not need at that moment, but now is a great time to activate this as we navigate the crisis” – 35.00 - “What I like is no bosses and that everybody is a leader. if you try and create an environment where people feel safe, in their teams, people will all, in the end, become leaders as they act in normal life as well” – 41.25 - “Try to take all the financial bonuses and incentives out of it so people can be vulnerable. Normally you can’t be vulnerable because it has a negative effect on your own salary or bonus or on the salary and bonus of your team” - 42.10 The book that Yom referenced during our conversation can be found here -> https://evonomics.com/why-garbage-men-should-earn-more-than-bankers/ Tom can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomvanderlubbe/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/valuevulnerability/message

We meandered through mental health, vulnerability, self-awareness and so much more with some of the key insights being: - “Who’s looking after the people looking after the people?” – 03.35 - “A lesson I had to learn the hard way was that duty of care belongs to the individual first and foremost” - 05.50 - “I’m making it up as I go along. When I set up DOCIA Sport I was still poorly. If I had set it up when I was well, I would have had a 5-year plan, umpteen KPIs, I’d have blinkers on. Because I didn’t have the blinkers on, I have had opportunities and met different people that I otherwise would not have met” – 08.35 - “I am (now) more self-aware and therefore feel that I can make better intuitive decisions, if it feels right” – 15.25 - “When you talk about your vulnerability it gives people, at worst, permission to themselves to think more deeply about their own stuff and at best to engage in a conversation” – 21.55 - “Is it (role modelling vulnerability) courageous, is it brave I don’t know, but it feels intuitively right” 22.20 Ian can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-braid-fmhc-484238/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Imbraid Bio: Ian has brought together his significant experience in sport and his passion for helping others under the umbrella of DOCIAsport the company he founded in 2017. He brings a refreshing and independent view to all aspects of duty of care in sport from the perspective of coaches, officials, athletes, administrators and the sector itself. Ian is acknowledged as a trusted leader whose opinions are widely sought after in sport, higher education, government and business. He is recognised as a champion of mental health education and has given acclaimed keynote presentations throughout the UK. These include a guest lecture at Edge Hill University, a partner in mental health in sport. Some of the key highlights for me include: - “I’ve seen how the business idea, developed in isolation, iterated, but not always with the information of the user with that information of the user coming late in the game. I love the human-centred philosophy which flips that” – 05.55 - “Start by listening to those that will be impacted. Understand that piece first without your assumptions and biases” – 07.25 - “why create in isolation, why not create by having input and feedback from the people that are going to actually experience whatever that output is” - 12.30 “I love approaching problems from this consideration of all of the others. I think that human-centred design accounts for that other piece” – 14.10 - “What inspires me is not just the human-centred design approach, but the intersection of public policy, legislation and date” – 14.25 - “The unknown felt really uncomfortable because it was so ambiguous” – 21.55 Arlene can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/arlenemendoza/ Please find my Interpersonal Catalyst brochure here in case I can support you at all -> https://my.visme.co/projects/rxyz4jpo-garry-turner-interpersonal-catalyst --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/valuevulnerability/message

Rhys and I both met Arlene via HumansFirst and Arlene is likely best known for the power of her storytelling. We are insanely excited to have Arlene explore the topic of the push and pull we each experience in our lives - expectations, standards, should's compared to internal vision and purpose and drive and needs. with us today to get a sprinkle of your stories and lessons and insights! Arlene took the leap - a big one - a hiatus to invest in herself. Not many of us have the courage to take such a leap; to hold up the mirror, to give ourselves that time and dedication to aligning and connecting with ourselves. This is one heck of a dialogue!

Love in Action

Times are changing. There is a movement happening: are you in? Joining us today is Mike Vacanti, the founder of the HumansFirst Club, and today we’re talking about the hope of being able to create positive change in the workplace, and how to lead from a humans first perspective. The HumansFirst Club Movement: We are at an inflection point where we’re realizing we can do better. The HumansFirst Club is an opportunity to have positive, constructive dialogue around what it is we’re experiencing now in the workplace, and the ideas we can share and build upon as a community to take the steps forward toward a future that really does value people first. What happens at a HumansFirst Club event: At HumansFirst Club events, we have people from all different perspectives and job roles, from business leaders, to HR, to authors, and instructors. They have unique and proven ideas and these ideas are gaining traction. At the center of it all, these people and their audiences have that great need of wanting to be happier and better. Business benefits of the movement: Given the opportunity, people will amaze you. By putting in a lot of the processes and operations and controls we feel are there to drive business results, we’re actually creating barriers to things that would happen naturally if we empowered people to deliver. If we create this transparency where our employees can attach their beliefs to the company beliefs, what they will contribute will far exceed what we could demand that they contribute. Leadership the HumansFirst way: We’re taught to look at the quantitative measures of people: what are they capable of from a statistical standpoint? But what about looking at the core of who our people are? What drives them? What are their true values? How are they influencing other people around them? What type of energy do they show up with during the day? How much do they smile? Do they lift the energy of other people? From a leadership standpoint, one of the most important things we can do is choose what to stop doing. What we stop doing is probably more important than what we do next. Take away the historic processes that may actually be barriers to high achievement — don’t add more to the bucket. Make sure you have the right things in the bucket. Why people lead with fear: Mike puts forward three theories. First, people think: this works because I experienced this, because I’ve now risen to a level of authority. This is the path to leadership and achievement. Second, there’s not much incentive to let go of it. To protect pride and ego, people cast fear so they can’t be challenged on their position and authority. Finally, laziness. It’s just easier to throw fear out there. You can detract, deflect, and don’t ever have to be vulnerable and be exposed for your insecurities. It’s a wall people hide behind. Final thoughts: We all have the ability for deep thinking, higher consciousness, and the opportunity to create positive change for at least one other person. We need to get rid of our limiting beliefs, choose what to stop doing, and fill in those gaps with things we know are important — so we can enhance our lives, and the interactions and relationships we have with others. Know that you’re part of something bigger than yourself. Resources for Mike Vacanti: LinkedIn | Twitter | Facebook | Website | HumansFirst Club | Brave Leadership

My guest this week is doing amazing things for people and focusing on the dialogue of moving people forward at work. He has recently begun focusing on the value of humans, creating a community known as HumansFirst. One of the things he has identified is that we are in a current leadership crisis. But he has a potential solution for this. THERE IS A GLOBAL LEADERSHIP CRISIS Mike says that when we look at the condition in companies, there isn't a lot of hope for positive change because, “While people want to do the right thing around them and the people that they engage with every day, they feel that they're encumbered by a structure and a system that doesn't allow positive change.” However, he goes on to note that he has learned over time that people will be able to move companies forward if we create a shift in culture to emphasize people. PEOPLE WILL DRIVE PRODUCTIVITY When we look at corporate settings, it is clear that people drive productivity. Mike notes we must focus on the fact that “Business is people.” And when we do that, the business has the ability to change in a positive way and move forward. He notes that change is happening at a much quicker pace than in past years, and, because of that, companies must depend upon humans to move forward. Episode Highlights: People will drive productivity Employment structures are transactional as workers are measured against finite pieces and then get paid to “do their job” ROI with regards to putting humans first People for profits - when people are growing they will bring their best effort The concept of HumansFirst The necessity to bring our whole selves to the office and the opportunity to be heard to make people feel valued Workers must feel free to express themselves This is an experiment - doing discovery now Until next time, lead well!  Bill Episode Resources: Connect with Mike Vacanti: HumansFirst Club: https://humansfirst.club/ HumansFirst Playground LinkedIn Profile: linkedin.com/in/mjvacanti   Connect with Bill: Book a time to speak Web: https://www.theinnovatusgroup.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bill-perry/ Twitter: @innovatusgroup Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thebillperryshow/   *** EPISODE CREDITS: If you like this podcast and are thinking of creating your own, consider talking to my producer, Danny Ozment. Renata can be contacted via any of the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/renata-porter/ Website - https://www.renataporter.com/ Email - rp@renataporter.com Bio: WHAT I DO: I work with managers, small business owners and companies who want to go to the next level in Leadership. Where they build fully engaged teams that enjoy their place of work, know the value they bring and have the desire to exceed all expectations. I help them connect by being inclusive, transparent, inspiring and most of all, Lead through Action. WHY IT WORKS: Quite honestly, I stay out of theory and get into action. I've spent the last 10 years in Leadership roles. I've worked in both the Public and Private sectors as well as with Non-Profits. I've gained a wealth of knowledge when it comes to leading teams and I know how to build empowered teams that WANT to outperform and overdeliver. While my roles have been varied, the common denominator is how I connect with people. The ability to truly connect with my staff, peers, and superiors is what sets me apart. My approach is to deliver real and actionable programs that managers can make their own and start building on their successes quickly. HOW IT WORKS: I have two avenues, consulting or training. For consulting, the first step is to begin your transformation is to schedule a complimentary 30-minute strategy session. From there we decide on what direction works best for you. These strategies can be delivered through workshops, courses, personal coaching or a combination of the three. With regards to training, I provide a variety of options. Those are online self-study, face to face workshops, webinar workshops (great for busy or remote teams) and face to face or remote coaching. This podcast is all about connection, conversation and community. On today’s episode, we’re diving deeper into these three "C's" with the idea of Waves and Ripples. I’ll be sharing some of my favorite stories, and Jason Meucci will join us in a special segment to share the waves and ripples in his life, which he connects to the Higher Purpose Podcast.  Waves and Ripples  Both waves and ripples are movements of water or liquid in response to a stimulus. The scientific definition of a wave is "a moving disturbance in the level of a body of water" — there is motion there. There is action, there is energy. Both definitions include movement and a response to some type of stimulus: something has to start the movement.  The distinction is that waves move you in a specific direction, whereas a ripple is a far-flung effect of something.  Opportunities in action  Imagine yourself sitting at the edge of the water, watching and listening to the waves. That’s one way to enjoy a wave’s impact. But unless you seize the opportunity, take action, and jump into the wave to have it carry you somewhere — you’re just sitting on the shore. You need deliberate and intentional action.  Jason Meucci’s waves and ripples  Jason has not only ridden waves and ripples, but has also created plenty of his own that we can trace through the Higher Purpose Podcast.  He shares the story of getting to work with Jake Haupert after listening to him on an episode. They’re spreading the word about how transformational travel works to make the world a better and more connected place, a project that has potentially global ripples. He also shares a story about connecting with Bernadette Jiwa through the podcast, who, within a week, had sent him a box of her books from Australia for him to share. That’s a ripple that has bounced from the podcast in Georgia, to Jason in Washington, to Bernadette in Australia, and back to Washington — and who knows where else! He talks about meeting and becoming friends with Renee Smith and Tyler Adams through the podcast, and says he can list another ten to a dozen people he’s connected with through the podcast. All of this because he decided to take action, get involved, get to know these people and invest in their relationships.  More waves and ripples  The first ever episode with Mark Tim was an introduction through Chris Patten. The Profile of Purpose Series, made up of conversations with 12 business owners who are in the business of purpose, also came as part of a wave. My friendship with Marcel Schwantes led to an introduction to Mike Vacanti, which then kicked off the HumansFirst series on the podcast (and the waves and ripples from each of my guests on the series!) and my involvement with the HumansFirst Club — which also led to my hosting the HumansFirst Hangout, which has been another set of waves and ripples all of its own!  A call to action  I want to invite you to share your waves and ripples story that is somehow connected to the tsunami effect of the Higher Purpose Podcast. Go to kevindmonroe.com/waves and you’ll find a page and instructions to record a voice message and share your story.  If you record it by Saturday, June 15, you’ll be able to hear it on our 100th milestone episode airing on June 25.

We’re at an inflection point in business. People aren’t being fulfilled, engagement is low, and mental and physical health ramifications are challenging people and businesses to find their growth rhythm. The old system doesn’t work. HumansFirst is about actively bringing more humanity into the workplace to elevate people, help them mentally and physically heal, and then advance and evolve the workplace. And HumansFirst is not just about work — it spills into all areas of life, because we bring all areas of life into our work. At HumansFirst Club Events: Each event is about the participants, so there is no “prepackaged roadshow” that the HumansFirst Club takes on tour. Volunteers come in to share and infuse ideas, topics, and ways forward, and that gets the juices flowing so people can participate. And it’s that participation from the people in the room that makes each event unique. But though the events aren’t designed the same way every time, some common themes do emerge about what’s broken and what can be repaired, which tells us that experiences are very similar across the country. On the horizon: The Playground is launching May 21, aligned with a live event taking place in Charlotte, to better serve an audience that is fast becoming global. It’s a virtual place with opportunities for people to come together and continue to experiment and meet other light-hearted people, and start to create what the future looks like. As for the HumansFirst Club meetings, they will continue, but based on the feedback, people are looking to go deeper on the topics. Extended time will be important, as well as an opportunity to get a larger group of people together, so it may evolve into a one-day event with more time, scope, and scale. Less frequent events but bigger and more engaging. Where the rubber meets the road: How can you bring the takeaways from the HumansFirst Club experience back to your organization and your daily work life? That’s where it feels like there is a barrier, or no entry point. That’s why Winning Conversations was designed. This program focuses on open dialogue, very much like during the HumansFirst Club events, and teaches businesses how to have these structured conversations to unleash the brilliance that’s already in your organization. Because it’s interactive and engaging, it drives adoption, accelerates initiatives, and ties multiple initiatives across your company together. Do we know what’s going on? Do we know what’s going to happen during the day? How do all the pieces fit together? Winning Conversations helps pull all of that into alignment, and builds this whole process into your organizational rhythms. It’s a very different approach to a highly believed and known problem. When we get people together, stretch them out of their comfort zones, and align to the reality that’s going on, all of a sudden you’ll see the company values come through, the vision becomes clear, and the people attach themselves to it. We love being busy, but now we can be purposeful. Given the opportunity, people will amaze you.

Being a Chief Heart Officer with Claude Silver

How do you help people bring their whole selves to work? Just ask Claude Silver, the Chief Heart Officer at VaynerMedia. She oversees wonderful people and their heartbeats, and the experience they have within the four walls of the office and even in life. What happens when you make people feel like they belong, that they’re appreciated, and that they’re here to do some incredible, innovative work that excites them? More than you can imagine. Connecting one on one Part of the job description of Chief Heart Officer is, naturally, spending time with people. Claude will either proactively reach out to people, or they will reach out to her, and they spend 15 minutes together. She asks how it’s going, what’s going on, what they’re excited about, and, most importantly, if there’s anything she can help them with, because that’s where curiosity and creativity comes into play. Usually, conversations are about challenges they’re facing, so she goes into every conversation holding two things in her hands: in one hand, non-judgment. In the other, action. Killing cultures “On or off the island,” i.e. favoritism, kills cultures. If you’re saying you’re good today, and today you’re on my island, but tomorrow I kick you out for no reason, it breeds toxicity, gossip, cynicism, and negativity that your people will most definitely feel. It affects people. A lot of what drives this is fear that stems from a lack of self-awareness. We’re worried that if we’re ‘found out’ for who we really are, we’ll be made to leave. This situation leads to hostile, secret-keeping behavior, where everyone keeps their guards up because we’re’re in a workplace that won’t accept us. It’s heartbreaking. Long ago, jobs were about muscle. Today, you need brains. But tomorrow, they’ll be about heart. And tomorrow is here. Tough love When there are disciplinary issues and it’s time for tough love, Claude shares that she practices radical candor. She’s going to give it to you straight, and she’s going to give it to you nicely. You can still be a kind human being and tell people specifically what’s up — and then together, work out a specific action plan. If we put our hearts and minds into our human beings, we will have a knock on success. Not just internally, but to our consumers as well. The HumansFirst Movement The idea of opening your heart at work is very relevant today. It is just what works. And people are clamoring for HumansFirst to come to their cities because they haven’t had the bravery yet: they haven’t found their voices, or they have, and nobody is listening. So a call for HumansFirst is people’s first step in finding ways to have that conversation with their board, CEO, or managers. Final thoughts As leaders, we are guides, not heroes. If you’re in a leadership role, it isn’t your show. You’re there to coach the people around you. Resources for Claude Silver LinkedIn | Instagram | Twitter | Job openings at VaynerMedia
