Non Yeats P.O.I. Dromahair. GPS location 54.220799, -8.297467 Dromahair lies in the hilly north west of Leitrim amid some stunning unspoiled natural landscapes. The "Sleeping Giant" mountain formation (comprising Keelogyboy, Leean and Benbo) is visible on approaches to the village, as is Lough Gill below the Slieve Dae?ne and Killerry mountain. The village itself is also idyllic, located on the banks of the River Bonet, which flows into Lough Gill. Much of Dromahair was modelled on a village in Somerset by the Earl of Leitrim, and the central streetscape still follows the pattern set down by him. Looking for a good lunch before getting the waterbus in the afternoon? Try the The Riverbank Restaurant. Stay on the R287 by taking a right coming into Dromahair - the restaurant is on the left and is marked on the map. It has a full licence and is open from Friday to Sunday. Evening meals are from 6.30 pm to 10 pm and Sunday Lunch from 12.30 to 3.00 pm.Bar Food is Served, daily from 12.30 to 9pm The poem Sean quotes in the audio piece is from Yeats's 1893 collection, The Rose: - The Man Who Dreamed Of Faeryland He stood among a crowd at Dromahair; His heart hung all upon a silken dress, And he had known at last some tenderness, Before earth took him to her stony care; But when a man poured fish into a pile, It Seemed they raised their little silver heads, And sang what gold morning or evening sheds Upon a woven world-forgotten isle Where people love beside the ravelled seas; That Time can never mar a lover's vows Under that woven changeless roof of boughs: The singing shook him out of his new ease. He wandered by the sands of Lissadell; His mind ran all on money cares and fears, And he had known at last some prudent years Before they heaped his grave under the hill; But while he passed before a plashy place, A lug-worm with its grey and muddy mouth Sang that somewhere to north or west or south There dwelt a gay, exulting, gentle race Under the golden or the silver skies; That if a dancer stayed his hungry foot It seemed the sun and moon were in the fruit: And at that singing he was no more wise. He mused beside the well of Scanavin, He mused upon his mockers: without fail His sudden vengeance were a country tale, When earthy night had drunk his body in; But one small knot-grass growing by the pool Sang where - unnecessary cruel voice - Old silence bids its chosen race rejoice, Whatever ravelled waters rise and fall Or stormy silver fret the gold of day, And midnight there enfold them like a fleece And lover there by lover be at peace. The tale drove his fine angry mood away. He slept under the hill of Lugnagall; And might have known at last unhaunted sleep Under that cold and vapour-turbaned steep, Now that the earth had taken man and all: Did not the worms that spired about his bones proclaim with that unwearied, reedy cry That God has laid His fingers on the sky, That from those fingers glittering summer runs Upon the dancer by the dreamless wave. Why should those lovers that no lovers miss Dream, until God burn Nature with a kiss? The man has found no comfort in the grave.

Ballysadare Bridge GPS Location: 54.209507, -8.509383 Narrators: Mary Murphy and Sean McMahon Ballysadare village, 7 miles south of Sligo is where the Pollexfen Company had extensive milling interests. You should be on the bridge where the Ballysadare river is. Facing north, you are now best placed to recall one of Yeats's better known poems, 'Down by the Sally Gardens'. Down by the sally gardens my love and I did meet; She passed the sally gardens with little snow-white feet. She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs; But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears. The poet often stayed at nearby Avena House, just off the main street down from the bridge which remains a private dwelling. Salley rods were grown here, for basket making etc, and Yeats once heard a tinker woman sing the ballad he later reworded so delicately. After Ballysadare, you'll be driving to Lough Gill and Dromahair by going under the N4 road onto the R290 traveling 3kms and turning right onto the R287. Get brought to brow showing spectacular Lough Gill via Google Maps: GPS Location: 54.250261, -8.45164 Another poem from Yeats's early work features the Crossways collection of 1889, published when he was 24. It references several nearby places. The Ballad Of Father O'Hart Good Father John O'Hart In penal days rode out To a Shoneen who had free lands And his own snipe and trout. In trust took he John's lands; Sleiveens were all his race; And he gave them as dowers to his daughters. And they married beyond their place. But Father John went up, And Father John went down; And he wore small holes in his Shoes, And he wore large holes in his gown. All loved him, only the shoneen, Whom the devils have by the hair, From the wives, and the cats, and the children, To the birds in the white of the air. The birds, for he opened their cages As he went up and down; And he said with a smile, 'Have peace now'; And he went his way with a frown. But if when anyone died Came keeners hoarser than rooks, He bade them give over their keening; For he was a man of books. And these were the works of John, When, weeping score by score, People came into Colooney; For he'd died at ninety-four. There was no human keening; The birds from Knocknarea And the world round Knocknashee Came keening in that day. The young birds and old birds Came flying, heavy and sad; Keening in from Tiraragh, Keening from Ballinafad; Keening from Inishmurray. Nor stayed for bite or sup; This way were all reproved Who dig old customs up.

The topic of our discussion today is Money for Jam and the importance of keeping your food business sustainable, profitable and competitive. Despite the fact that this discussion is focused on food businesses, anyone with a spark for entrepreneurship will find it helpful. Our guest today is food business professional and author Oonagh Monahan. She started her own career working in large food companies and eventually carved her own path as a food consultant and mentor through her own agency : Alpha Omega. Oonagh has a huge passion for artisan producers and during the pandemic, she decided to put her money where her mouth is (literally) and buy foods and drinks from a list she compiled of Irish artisan food producers. We chatted to her about her motivations for this project, who and what she discovered and the digital directory she still keeps updated today. You may have also come across her book “Money for Jam - an essential guide to starting a food business”. This book contains everything that someone who is new to the food business will need to get started, but more importantly, how to keep going. This came about after mentoring and helping hundreds of small food businesses over the course of 10 years to do the same and of course she also dispensed some golden nuggets of business advice for us too on this episode! We also discussed a number of other business support services in Ireland, such as the Local Enterprise Offices. We talked about the importance of sustainability, profitability, what does success look like and is growing your business just for the sake of growth a good thing or maybe not?Oonagh works from her base in Dromahair in North Leitrim so we started by asking her about the food scene in the West of Ireland. We hope you enjoy the conversation.Links:Money for Jam 2e: The Essential Guide to Starting Your Own Small Food Business (2017) by Oonagh MonahanISBN 1781192952, 9781781192955You can purchase directly from Oonagh here - https://alphaomega.ie/product/money-for-jam/ or through your local bookstore. This week on the Sports Roundup Show we're reacting to the reality that local sport isn't going to be with us for the next few weeks at a minimum as the GAA led the announcements this week that local and amateur sports would be closed down until further notice. We're joined by Leitrim GAA Chairman Enda Stenson to discuss the impact in Leitrim as well as a look at the sport which did take place over the weekend. In our roundup we'll focus on Glencar/Manor's assault on the Connacht Ladies Football Intermediate Club Championship (0:41) with a victory over Mayo club Kilmovee Shamrocks on Sunday in a brave display by the Leitrim champs. Carrick Hurling left it late to force extra time and repeated the trick to win the game at the death in the Senior Hurling final (1:57) against Cluainin Iomaint on Saturday evening. In National League Soccer (3:14) it was a mixed bag for Leitrim players with Niall Morahan and his Sligo Rovers team mates falling to a 4-0 defeat to champions elect Shamrock Rovers while Dearbhaile Beirne and her Peamount United doubled down on their recent league victory over rivals Shelbourne to ease into the FAI Cup Semi Final on a scoreline of 1-0. In Rugby the new look Energia Community Shield (5:08) continued with it's second round with Matthew Earley at hooker for Sligo and helping them continue their 100% winning start to the season with a 25-15 win over Galwegians in the Connacht conference, Fenagh's Jack Gilheaney made his first start at inside centre for Old Belvedere in their 22-15 defeat to UCD in the Leinster conference. Both players would also feature on gaelic football pitches over the weekend too. Earley winning a Junior 'C' title with Leitrim Gaels two hours after the final whistle and Gilheaney playing for Leitrim in a challenge game on Sunday morning. We also take a run through the local results in Leitrim GAA (5:57), the Sligo Leitrim & District Soccer League (7:13), Junior Connacht Rugby (9:43). We start out with a very special guest with Leitrim GAA Chairman Enda Stenson (10:23) joining Breifne to discuss the impact locally of the national blanket ban on all GAA Club games across the entire country. He speaks specifically about the impact on the five adult teams who have championship games, Intermediate finalists Annaduff & Gortletteragh, Junior pair Aughavas & Cloone and Glencar/Manor in the Connacht Ladies Club Final and the total devastation caused in underage competitions in the county. He also shares his personal concerns and fears with the National Football League tie in Park Esler in Newry, Co. Down in a couple of weeks and his own attendance at the game and what impact might arise from Leitrim's participation in that game considering the current situation with the virus figures coming from the North of Ireland. Our remaining guests this week come from the main sporting events of the weekend including that fantastic result from Glencar/Manor in the Connacht Ladies Club Championship Semi Final where Breifne spoke to John Sheridan (24:06), Mellissa Hewitt (26:52) & Amanda Sweeney (30:23). After the snatch and grab from Carrick Hurling we spoke to their late goalscorer James Glancy (32:50) & manager Hilary Phelan (35:19) as well as the player of the match Gavin O'Hagan (38:49). In the Junior C Final, Leitrim Gaels edged out the challenge of Dromahair and we spoke to the winning manager Peter Goldrick (40:23) & defeated captain Martin Clancy (41:39) after the game. We also featured participants in both Junior A Semi Finals after Aughavas and Cloone progressed to the final at the expense of Glenfarne/Kiltyclogher and Glencar/Manorhamilton respectively. We spoke to Aidy McCallion of Glenfarne/Kilty after his side's defeat (43:56) and Fintan McBrien (47:09) & Fintan Gallogly (51:36) of Aughavas. After the second semi final we spoke to winning manager Philip Charles (53:38) and his players Gavin Reynolds (57:47) & Seamus Maguire (61:05) from the winning side, Cloone, and penalty saving keeper and captain of the beaten semi finalists Manor, Luke Sheridan (63:12).

This weekend’s action revolved around the Leitrim GAA Senior Football Championship Final as Mohill saw off the challenge of St. Mary’s to win their first Senior crown since 2017 in Avantcard Pairc Sean MacDiarmada on Sunday afternoon. In a somewhat muted environment in the county grounds 200 supporters made themselves heard as they cheered on their teams in an entertaining game which Mohill proved to be just a touch more experienced and cute for a very young Carrick side. We’re also chatting about Connacht Club Ladies Football, National League and local Soccer and the return of Senior Rugby to the province with the first round of games in the Energia Community Series which kicked off this weekend. We hear from Mohill Captain Danny Beck, Man of the Match Keith Beirne, Shane Quinn and their manager Liam Keenan while Paul Keaney and Denis Connerton give us the view from the St. Mary’s camp after the final. Mohill also feature in the Ladies Football action this weekend as the Leitrim LGFA Intermediate Champions fielded a weakened team in the Connacht Championship on Saturday. Injuries combined with work, family and other sporting commitments saw the home team fail to reach the heights of the previous week’s final exploits. We hear from Emma Quinn and Barry Lupton after the game. In Rugby, Sligo celebrated the return of Senior competitive club action with a first ever victory against Buccaneers in Dubarry Park. Their hooker Matthew Earley got himself on the try scorers list with a well worked set piece score. We get his thoughts after the game. In a weekend where Leitrim was represented by Dearbhaile Beirne in a game which will have a massive impact on the destination of the Women’s National League title this season. Peamount beat their title rivals Shelbourne 6-1 on Saturday but the next generation Muireann Devaney featured in Sligo Rover’s 2-1 defeat to Athlone in the Under 17 grade. We hear from Muireann and her coach Danny O’Leary after the game. Locally there were wins for Manor Rangers in the Super League, 3-2 at home to Ballisadare Utd, while Dromahair took all three points from their Premier Division clash with a 2-1 win over Chaffpool Utd. Meanwhile Carrick Town fell to a 3-1 defeat despite a first half screamer from Liam McTiernan opening the scoring against St. John’s. We hear from Dromahair’s match winner Martin Feeney & David Downes and Carrick Town’s David Regan & Liam McTiernan.

Something was written in the stars this weekend for last year's beaten finalists in the Leitrim Ladies Football Championships finals as Glencar/Manor, Mohill and Drumkeerin finally got their hands on silverware just twelve months after each side experienced heartbreak on county final day. It was third time lucky for Glencar Manorhamilton as they overcame the challenge of final debutants Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins in the decider while Mohill's firepower was too much for a young Dromahair side in the Intermediate decider. Drumkeerin edged out Fenagh St. Caillins in the Junior showpiece in a tight game that took an injury time goal in extra time to decide the winners. We run through the Ladies Football (0:40) results, the scores from Junior A, B & C Men's Football (2:09) and the second round of games in the Sligo Leitrim 7 District Soccer League (3:51). Over the weekend we spoke to some of the winners and runners up in the Ladies Football (7:22) finals including one of the winning co-captains of Glencar Manorhamilton Eimear Feely (8:34), their free scoring forward Muireann Devaney (11:17) and their manager Padhraic Corrigan (13:47) while Ballinamore captain Laura O'Dowd (17:30) shares her disappointment at her side's defeat in the game. At Intermediate level Mohill had too much strength up front for a Dromahair side who struggled to match the eventual winners for the entire 60 minutes of the encounter. After the game we heard the thoughts of Mohill midfielder Denise Stenson (21:06), player of the match Dearbhaile Beirne (25:29) and their manager Barry Lupton (27:00). In the final ladies game at the weekend last year's beaten finalists Drumkeerin faced the challenge of Fenagh and the underdogs flew into an early lead but couldn't hold the lead into the final stages and ended up losing the game to a last minute goal in extra time, after the game we spoke to their captain Charleen Maguire (32:01), player of the match Ann-Marie Gallagher (34:52). We also hear from both managers Fenagh's Paidh Rowley (36:48) & Drumkeerin's Tom McGinty (40:00). Finally we take a look at the action for Carrick Town (43:23) in the Sligo Pallets Premier League on Sunday morning with their centre half Cormac Smith (43:45) and manager Alessio Mignone (45:27).

Meanwhile in Dublin's Morton Stadium, Carrick on Shannon Athletic Club's Gerard O'Donnell (5:57) landed his fourth consecutive national 110m hurdles title and his fifth in total, with a commanding run leaving the rest of the field in his wake. He joins us to discuss the race, his season and what's next as the prospect of Olympic qualification looms large. At home at the quarter final stage (18:15) Mohill eased past Allen Gaels despite a spirited revival from the Drumshanbo side in the second half of their clash on Saturday. After the game we heard from Mohill's manager Liam Keenan (18:56), player Keith Keegan (21:07) and Allen Gael's Colin Moran (24:03). A solid defensive display from the northerners meant a very late goal for Ballinamore couldn't change the outcome. We spoke to Glencar/Manor Sean Boylan (52:37) and Evan Sweeney (54:46) as well as Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins chairman Michael Quinn (57:19) In the Intermediate grade there were victories for Annaduff, Gortletteragh, Dromahair and Carrigallen. This week for our Sports Preview show Brendan Guckian and Seamus Gallagher join Breifne Earley to run the rule over what might lie in store for all twenty clubs taking part in the Leitrim Club Football Championships. Current U17 Leitrim Manager Brendan Guckian runs the rule over the teams taking part in the Connacht Gold Leitrim Senior Football Championship, a competition the former inter county midfielder won on three occasions (1995, 2003 & 2007) with his own club St. Mary's. Former County Board Secretary, Seamus Gallagher, himself a Championship winner with Drumkeerin in the second tier in 1975 talks us through what lies ahead for the secondary grade of the game in the county. In the Senior grade Group 1, his own club, St. Mary's, facing into a particularly tough group against three of the fancied sides in last season's beaten finalists Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins and Mohill and Aughawillan who have won the competition two and three times respectively in the last six years. Those four will be joined by Fenagh St. Caillins, managed by Joseph Flynn, who oversaw St. Mary's last season with both those sides clashing in the first round of games on Saturday week. Aughawillan will get the opportunity to watch their upcoming opponents with a weekend off while Mohill and Ballinamore Sean O'Heslins will clash in what promises to be the tie of the opening round. Group 2 sees Glencar/Manor favourites to top the group as winners although Allen Gaels will be looking to regroup after a disappointing season in 2019, Leitrim Gaels will be relishing their first ever crack at this level in their 24th Championship season, they host Melvin Gaels in their opener next week, while the Kinlough men seeking overall redemption for their Semi Final defeat last season. Drumreilly have developed a knack of not knowing when they are beaten and it would take a brave their evergreen squad will be looking to secure their quarter final spot and their guaranteed survival at the top table. A lot will be decided based on how teams finish in their groups and who they face in the quarter final draw as to who might be the top dogs when the Championship runs it's course at the end of September. In the Smith Monumentals Intermediate Championship Group 1 sees Eslin, Ballinaglera, Bornacoola, Drumkeerin and Aughnasheelin face off over the five rounds of games to attempt to qualify for the championship quarter finals while Group 2 will require Kiltubrid, Gortletteragh, St Patrick's Dromahair and Carrigallen to battle it out with last year's semi finalists Annaduff to provide their opposition at that stage. With Gortletteragh and Dromahair having dropped down to the Intermediate grade and always competitive Eslin led by the Beirne brothers promoted to the trio of Ballinaglera, Drumkeerin and Annaduff they will be the favourites to challenge for the most competitive championship in the county this year. Aughnasheelin's challenge will depend as usual on the numbers they might available for this years campaign while Carrigallen, Bornacoola and Kiltubrid will fancy causing an upset against the fancied sides. It's amazing to think those three teams combined featured five times in no less than four Senior Championship finals from 2005 to 2009. Both Seamus and Brendan discuss the effect of home advantage, a new addition to the championship for this season, and whether full crowds will return as expected to the sidelines for these early season games.

This week's Sports Roundup show takes a look back at the action which did take place over a frost affected few days. Manor Rangers repeated their heroics of last weekend while Leitrim's U14 female footballers got their season up and running as St. Clares Comp prepare for a Connacht Final on Wednesday in Athlone. After their table topping victory last weekend Manor didn't rest on their laurels yesterday in their Connacht Cup victory over Renmore of Galway in the Bee Park in Manorhamilton. Conceding a sloppy goal after ten minutes and some wasteful finishing from the home side certainly made it look like it wasn't going to be their day. A last minute header from Seamus Ryder would ensure the game went to extra time where Ryder would score again to give Manor the lead. A well finished move from the Galway side would tie up the game with less than ten minutes remaining and it was to be settled on spot kicks on the day. After 8 successful strikes from each side 16 year old Diarmuid Giblin stepped up for Manor only to see his effort saved, but the post came to his and Manor's rescue, before a combination of a converted penalty from player / manager Thomas McDonald and a save from Gilligan in the Manor goal left the home side smiling at the end. We caught up with Robbie Cunningham and Brian McDonald as well as the gaffer Thomas McDonald after the game. Declan Boyle, Coordinator of the Leitrim Sports Partnership, tells us all about the Operation Transformation walks which took place around the county with over 300 participants getting out and active for a 5km walk in Ballinamore, Carrick, Dromahair and Manorhamilton. Leitrim Ladies U14 side got their season up and running with a very competitive challenge game against a Longford side in Keenagh on Saturday. Thankfully the students of 5th and 6th class in St. Joseph’s National School in Killenummery just outside of Dromahair offered to fill in for him. While learning all about radio and podcasting as well as showing off their own YouTube gaming channels they decided they could do a much better job of presenting the show and devised their own content. After discussing what topics should be included they settled on sport, music, the Killenummery school experience, what achievements had happened during the year, their Christmas play and even helped Santa by writting a top ten list just in case anyone hasn’t sent that all important letter to the North Pole yet. A massive thank you to the students of the school who really did took over full control of the show for the day, and the accommodating staff in the school particularly Ms Carr and Ms Gallagher. If any other schools are interested in having their students take over the show for a day, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

This week for Kiss My Arts we’ve gone back to the future with the school children of St. Hugh’s National School in Dowra and their recently published history of Ballinaglera Parish ‘Fire on the Mountain’ which was recently launched by Brian Dobson. I speak to school principal Padraig Kenny about the school’s second publication after the success of their first effort ‘Scrapbook of Regret’ featuring the regrets of 150 legends of gaelic football. This book is considerably more local and special to the children and their own family and community history came to the fore for some of them during the research and compilation of this compendium. Daithi McGrail and Orla Ryan share the story of the ‘Sons of the Grabber’ about ‘The Grabber’ Brady who because of a dispute over land was boycotted for basic essentials in shops across Dowra, Ballinagleragh, Drumshanbo and Drumkeerin. When he sent his sons to Dromahair under the cloak of night to get supplies, a mob met the returning boys in Drumkeerin and upended their carts to uphold the boycott. Despite three attempts no local jury every convicted the mob. Daniel Gilrane, Jamie McTiernan and Emily Woods give us the details behind the disappearance of two young adventurers Kenneth Reed and William Anderson who set off to kayak the River Shannon but ignored the weather warnings of the locals they met and met their demise on the ‘Wicked Lake’ of Lough Allen. Amy Crawford, Cora Taggart, Emma Rose & Shane Lowe tell us about an amazing woman, Helen Leonard Kerrigan, who after emigrating to America, found herself serving as US Army nurse in World War One in both Serbia and France, being recognised by both Serbia and France for her services before returning to the USA where she spent her days until her death in 1950. Shane Lowe, Darragh McGourty and Mona Lowe have picked their favourite story as the tale of Charles McMorrow, a local smuggler, who after being convicted, fined and jailed, made a ‘Dash from Court’ in 1937 by swimming across the Shannon in the town and escaping across the Cuilcagh mountains and his freedom. It would be 1979 before he returned to the town after a chance meeting with former Leitrim Observer editor David Walsh who wrote about his exploits. Unfortunately McMorrow passed away within twelve months of this return. The final story from the book that we hear about on the show was presented by Shannon McTiernan, Claire Feeney, Anna McGreal & Sadhbh Gilrane about the Morley Estate and the scandal of the attempt of locals to buy their land from the landlord Albert Edward Parker but found out that the landlords agent had double crossed them and bought the land himself. Another mob descended to fight for the tenants rights and resulted in further court cases which of course given the history of the area is hardly a surprise. I wrap up the show speaking to Mr. Kenny about the book and the work put into it behind the scenes from the staff, the students, parents and board of management. We also discuss the recent award won by the school at the FIS Film Festival. The book “Fire on the Mountain” is available now in most outlets in the area and surrounding towns and also available online at https://www.sainthughs.com/fireonthemountain/

This week on In Focus, Breifne took a cruise on the Rose of Innisfree from Parkes Castle through Lough Gill to Sligo Town and back along the shores of Hazelwood. Supported by Urban Fit Crew Boxfit, Kiltoghert. As well as some tourists enjoying the scenic journey he caught up with both Tina and George McGoldrick, the owners of the vessel and they both chatted with Breifne about the influence the ship and the lake have had on their lives and their family business. The addition of new docking facilities in Sligo this year has grown their business this summer and increased the footfall on board and to the lakeside Parkes Castle. George shared some of the folklore of the lake, it's islands, their former inhabitants and the inspiration that was drawn from some of those landmarks by Nobel Prize winning poet, William Butler Yeats, during his career. During the show we hear the poet himself recite his most famous work, The Lake Isle of Innisfree, as well as adaptations of another famous piece, Down By the Sally Gardens, sung by Orla Fallon. Also on today's show we hear from Martha Smyth who was the winner of our Experience Leitrim competition at the start of the month about her plans to really get a feel for the range of activities around the county.
