Episode #9: There are turning points in our lives that define who we become, and Mareya the Fit Foodie's journey is a testament to the power of transformative change. On Positive Traction, we sit down with Mareya—a chef, a holistic nutritionist, and a brain health coach—as she shares the incredible story of how she turned her life around at 55. Battling through depression and a toxic marriage, Mareya emerged as not just a symbol of health and empowerment, but also a beacon of inspiration for anyone facing their own personal hurdles. Her dedication to wellness and self-improvement culminates in her preparation for a second bikini fitness competition, proving that transformation is boundless. Embarking on a journey of faith and entrepreneurship often requires a leap into the unknown, and Mareya did just that. The creation of her product, Eat Cleaner, was not only a response to her father's health struggles but also a leap of faith, blending her expertise in science and nutrition with earnest prayer. She recounts the process of shedding layers, akin to peeling an onion, to reveal a life dedicated to clean eating, healthful living, and the courage to take risks. The kitchen may seem chaotic, but Mareya uses it as a metaphor for life, teaching us how to navigate through our challenges with grace and resilience, much like a seasoned chef orchestrates a bustling kitchen. Rounding out our heartening conversation, Mareya invites us to consider the role food plays in building community and shaping our health. She introduces us to her food philosophy through her latest book, "Eat Like You Give a Fork," challenging us to rethink our eating habits and purge our pantries of processed foods. It's not just about what's on our plate; it's about the incremental steps we take towards a healthier existence and the flavors that truly nourish our souls. By sharing her wisdom on creating new, wholesome cravings and taking actionable steps toward a fit life, Mareya the Fit Foodie offers a roadmap to vitality that resonates with listeners at any stage of their wellness journey. IN THIS EPISODE OF THE HUMAN UPGRADE™...…two food experts explain the many ways your food choices influence your body systems—and what you can do differently to improve your gut function, energy and performance. Here's a look at how essential amino acids and the right proteins can keep inflammation at bay and keep your metabolism humming.Teri Cochrane, CN, CCP, went down the research rabbit hole when both her son and daughter (at different ages and for different reasons) experienced severe health problems. She not only examined nutrition in-depth, but she also investigated epigenetics and nutrigenomics “Disruptors such as pathogens, mycotoxins, stress, amyloids and inflammatory foods work together to impair body balance,” Teri says. “We have found a direct link between amyloids, mycotoxins and these health disruptors in the acceleration of disease.”She's developed her own methodology that integrates a multi-level nutritional approach—including biochemistry, nutrition, genetic tendencies, herbology, supplementation and counseling. As the author of the “The Wildatarian Diet: Living as Nature Intended,” Teri lays out how the malabsorption of protein, fat, and sulfur, tamper with gene expression. Mareya Ibrahim believes in food flexibility while still focusing on a core system that works. She's a holistic nutritionist, TV chef, podcast host, and award-winning entrepreneur and inventor with more than 25 years of experience in the food industry. She also founded Grow Green Industries and co-invented the patented eatCleaner line of products. In her book, “Eat Like You Give a Fork: The Real Dish on Eating to Thrive,” she explains the nuances of clean eating, how to reset your taste buds, and all the ways essential amino acids keep your body functioning.“Essential amino acids are what fuel us and allow us to regulate our hormones, and flex our metabolisms, and build muscle, and all of the things that we need to be functioning human beings,” Mareya says. Michelle Schwegmann and her husband Josh Hooten started Herbivore Clothing in 2002 in the spare bedroom of their apartment in SE PDX because they wanted good-looking clothes, ethically made, that would show the world they believed animals deserve respect, love, and to be free from harm. Plain and simple, they wanted to spread the word about living cruelty-free. Nearing the twenty-year mark since they began Herbivore Clothing the core beliefs remain the same and now they are located in the vegan mini-mall of Portland. Herbivore Clothing is still one of the leading vegan brands designing rad clothing, as well as manufacturing belts and wallets. They have hosted countless events, co-founded an animal rights conference, and spoken at vegfests. They donate their time at sanctuaries and donate their skills to lots of organizations in the form of pro-bono design work. They continue to raise buckets of money for animal rights organizations and sanctuaries, as well as other social justice movements. The title from this episode comes from my favorite cookbooks - Thug Kitchen (more cookbook recommendations at the end) and the Book of the Week is one that transformed how I eat forever. In today's conversation, we're getting into the book, The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-Term Health by T. Colin Campbell PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II. It's filled with research, studies, and resources on the benefits of minimizing the meat and dairy we consume and the case for adding in more (real) plants. You'll get a sneak peek of the wide-range of areas this book covers as we go through today, 13-fun and random facts that will give you something to chew on (cheesy pun intended) and might entice you to go and grab this book for yourself. It is VERY "sciency" so if you like that kind of thing, ,you'll appreciate this. If you're not so much into that level of detail, there's plenty of charts and graphs to follow along and still get the point. Either way, once you get into it, I think you'll find it very eye-opening and maybe even binge-worthy as you learn more about how to live longer, be healthier, and prevent/reverse disease. You'll hear how despite being a vegetarian since college, I wasn't that healthy (mostly because I didn't actually eat that many vegetables), and how this book significantly shifted my perspective on what I put into my body and what goes into the food I put into my body. After committing to this transformation a little over 10 years ago, my acne and "backne" that I was still majorly struggling with in my mid-20s became almost non-existent, my skin also felt brighter, I rarely was ever constipated (I thought this could me TMI, but I know you can handle it), I lost weight, and I was able to complete a full marathon, 100% on a plant-based diet, in less than 4 hours (sharing this not to brag, but to highlight the strength and energy I had from this shift). When you think about food, I always like the approach of how I can add in more healthy foods instead of focusing on all the will-power you're going to need to cut things out. I have found almost by default that will happen overtime by getting crowded out by all the food that's bringing you health and energy. *I think we all already are aware of this but just in case - I am NOT a medical professional of any kind. The information I shared today is directly from this book or my own personal experience, which most likely will be different from yours. I know you're smart and will consult with your doctor on any major changes this book might inspire. xoxo. Carbohydrates supply energy. Healthy fats supply energy too, as well as helping produce important hormones for your body. Proteins are used to repair damaged tissues and help grow new ones. A well balanced diet should include all three macronutrients from healthy, clean food sources; as we get older, the food we eat play an important role in how our body functions, not only when we sweat, but in all facets of our life. Chef Mareya Ibrahim is known as the 'Fit Foodie' and wrote the book, 'Eat Like You Give A Fork' to help people learn how a healthy diet supports an active lifestyle. On this episode of All About Fitness, Chef Mareya stops by to talk about the role that food plays in achieving optimal fitness as well as how it can help support a healthy, vibrant sex life (a very important part of a healthy lifestyle).
