Lisa Beth is also a mentor, advocate, and friend to many in the compliance community. While many people consider a CECO role their ultimate career goal, others look to a more GC-focused role. In the past few years, Lisa Beth's career has evolved in that way while she remains involved in compliance. In this episode, she talks about her role, how serendipity and planning helped her get to where she is, and how it is important to be intentional while staying open to new opportunities. In discussing 2025, Lisa Beth notes that her theme of the year is “consistency” and how this is important not only in work but also in being present with family, friends, and community. In terms of the ethics and compliance landscape, they discuss how this will likely be a year of change in regulations in the US and globally and the importance of being agile. Lisa Beth was recently certified by Women in AI Governance as a Founding Quantum Member. She discusses the importance of learning about AI for E&C professionals and says this is a good time to start a wide learning journey in AI as the field expands. We emphasize the importance of "understanding the business," in Ethics & Compliance, which is absolutely critical to our success. One of the topics we discuss less frequently is how to work with other control functions, one of which is internal controls.  Lisa is speaking about this topic at the SCCE CEI with Matt Kelly from Radical Compliance. In advance of the conference, Lisa and Ellen Hunt co-hosted a roundtable discussion with Matt Kelly from Radical Compliance, and Sarah Lawrence, Sr. Director of Internal Controls at Pearson.  In this episode, they discuss the history and purpose of internal controls and SOX, how they evolved and how they work today. In particular, they focus on what is financial materiality vs what E&C sees as areas for controls. The whole group agreed that open lines of communication and coordination are fundamental to both of these control functions working together, and Sarah and Lisa discuss how they have built a collaborative relationship so that both the finance and compliance sides understand each other's objectives and keep an open line to the benefit of both functions. #GWIC is proud to announce that it has been nominated for the WomenInPodcastAwards.  This is a people's choice award and whether you vote for #GWIC or other nominees we ask that you send the elevator back down by voting. Voting opens August 1, 2024, and details can be found on the #GWIC Linkedin page at http://www.linkedin.com/groups/12156164 Resources Join the Great Women in Compliance community on LinkedIn here.

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.  In today's episode, Lisa speaks with one of the "OG GWICs," and one of the first interviewees, Ellen Hunt.  Ellen joined Spark Compliance in 2021, and is always a supporter for women in compliance, and in compliance as a whole.  Today, we follow up on her 2021 podcast, where Lisa and Ellen discussed how the E&C profession is addressing retaliation, and the importance of anti-retaliation as part of speaking up. The main discussion is about organizational justice, and particularly aspects of procedural justice, as this is one where compliance professionals can have a huge impact.  They discuss the concept of consistent discipline and fairness, and what that can mean.   They also discuss when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars telecast from an organizational justice standpoint, and how similar issues play out in corporations. Post By: Adam Turteltaub The pandemic is both increasing burnout and making it harder to differentiate between needing a break and being, well, just completely done. As Ellen Hunt of Spark Compliance and Melanie Sponholz, Chief Compliance Officer, Waud Capital Partners explain in this podcast (and will also share in their session at the HCCA Compliance Institute), common signs are fatigue (to the point of not wanting to get up and start work), feeling cynical or jaded, irritability, inability to concentrate, not feeling your usual self, and no sense of purpose. Another sign to watch out for: the inability to have a sense of accomplishment. If being able to cross something off of your list no longer brings with it any feeling of reward, it's a telltale sign of burnout. To avoid burnout they recommend building a separation between work and not working. That's harder to do with so many of us working from home, but it's necessary. Try to focus on doing some things completely separate from work that make you happy. Anything involving movement – walking, running yoga – can help. Think about things that you used to do at home that filled your cup when you left work. It could be cooking a meal, reading a good book, or spending time with non-work friends (safely, of course). At work, they recommend three specific behaviors: Always assume positive intent. Don't think that people are out to get you, even if their words may seem a bit hostile. Practice the pause. Take a deep breath and ask yourself, “Are they really insulting me, trying or be rude, not understanding?” Ask people why they asked the question or made the decision that they did. It could have just come from a misunderstanding. Ask yourself: Do I really care?  Is this something that is going to matter next week or year? Finally, they advise making that effort to revive and build out your network. It will help you expand beyond the core people you normally interact with and find others than inspire you. It's also beneficial to talk with others going through similar circumstances to be reminded that you are not alone. So, schedule that 30-minute virtual coffee, or just send a note to someone you haven't been in touch with to see how they are doing. Reach out to people you admire. Many will be surprisingly happy to hear of your support and be more than willing to talk. You can even take the next step of creating something of a board of advisors for yourself. Listen in to learn more, and then be sure to attend their session at the 2022 HCCA Compliance Institute, which takes place in Phoenix, March 28-31 and is also available online.

Welcome to the Great Women in Compliance Podcast, co-hosted by Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley.  Today's episode is a "ripped from the headlines" one, where Ellen Hunt joins GWIC talk about some of the recent events of the last couple of weeks that put a light on raising concerns, whistleblowing and retaliation. Ellen is Vice President ~ Compliance Program Operations & Chief Privacy Officer at LifePoint Health, and a leader, sponsor and advocate for everyone in the ethics and compliance space. In this discussion, Lisa and Ellen discuss some of the recent developments in the ActiVision/Blizzard fallout from the lawsuit, and the report that came out about Governor Andrew Cuomo last week. Lisa and Ellen reflect on the reaction of the ActiVision leadership, and how we as compliance officers can best address these kinds of issues. More deeply, they reflect on how to balance all our work to build a speak up culture with the need to protect those who raise concerns. They talk specifically about the fear of retaliation.   They try to identify the problems that are in the spotlight right now and Ellen in particular provides her insight into some solutions of how we in the E&C community can do better. Our profession, and the GWIC community, is based on supporting ethical decision making, so we are so grateful to Ellen to speaking and being so candid on this difficult topic.   The Great Women in Compliance Podcast is on the Compliance Podcast Network with a selection of other Compliance related offerings to listen in to. If you are enjoying this episode, please rate it on your preferred podcast player to help other likeminded Ethics and Compliance professionals find it. You can also find the GWIC podcast on Corporate Compliance Insights where Lisa and Mary have a landing page with additional information about them and the story of the podcast. Corporate Compliance Insights is a much appreciated sponsor and supporter of GWIC, including affiliate organization CCI Press publishing the related book; “Sending the Elevator Back Down: What We've Learned from Great Women in Compliance” (CCI Press, 2020). In today's episode of Great Women in Compliance, Lisa speaks with Ellen Hunt, who is the Senior Vice President and Audit, Ethics and Compliance Officer for AARP. Ellen has accomplished so much for the compliance community, in the field and is a friend, advocate and mentor to a lot of people, Lisa and Mary included. Following along from the episode a few weeks ago about a dream compliance team, this discussion is about what makes a great Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer (although the title may differ from place to place). The discussion includes a discussion of what the roles and responsibilities are and should be for a new CECO. This includes some thought about how to manage expectations of a Board and executive team, including the idea of looking at a program and seeing what may not be needed before adding new initiatives. Ellen also talks about the best ways to lead a team, balancing the needs of high performers with other team members as a new CECO. She provides a few practical strategies that anyone can use at any time with their teams or within the organization. We recorded a special episode of Great Women in Compliance this week.  A roundtable session was held at the Gaylord Resort and Convention Center at National Harbor -  right from the SCCE CEI.  This year’s conference attracted nearly 1900 attendees and was packed full of interesting sessions from substantive topics to soft skills to motivational and inspirational, which we hope our session “Starting the Great Women in Compliance Podcast.  How an Idea from the SCCE 2018 CEI Evolved into a Podcast and What We Learned” was for some of the attendees.  Podcast hosts Lisa Fine and Mary Shirley were joined for this episode by two popular and prominent Great Women in Compliance, Amii Barnard-Bahn and Ellen Hunt to share insights, observations and learnings from this year’s conference.  We talked about a few of the sessions of the conference and the key takeaways from each, top tips for networking specifically at conferences to make the most of the in person experience, developments in relation to women on boards and overall highlights from attending the conference.  Lisa and Mary would like to extend sincere gratitude to the folks that introduced themselves at the conference, supported our session, podcast and supplied us with feedback.  It was a wonderful experience meeting so many of our LinkedIn connections including several Great Women in Compliance in person and we very much look forward to seeing you all again next year.

In this episode of Great Women in Compliance, Lisa Fine speaks with lawyer Ellen Hunt, the Senior Vice President Audit, Ethics and Compliance Officer at AARP. She has had a wealth of experience working with boards of directors and helping to move the industry forward with education programs designed to help leaders make more ethical decisions.  Relationships with Boards of Directors Ellen has often worked with boards of directors, and one of the paramount considerations is having a good relationship with the people on different committees before challenging issues come up. Gender on Boards of Directors Ellen has most often work with organizations with women not only being on boards, but also n management teams. If you are the only woman in the room however, think about how you can pave the way for others to follow you, and how what you bring to the table, like empathy and good listening is an important and valuable perspective.  Mentoring and Sponsorships Mentors and sponsors are different things. A good mentor will share their own path with you, but a sponsor will be your advocate, and they’ll help make things happen for you.  Compliance as a Function – what is changing? Compliance has really established itself as a function. It’s a profession that has a tremendous amount of credibility, but we must continuously disrupt the industry.
