In this episode, Kelsey Taylor interviews Enneagram Nines, Trey Johnson and Jamie Roucloux on their wings. In the context of the Enneagram, your wings are the two numbers directly adjacent to your primary Type. The 9w1 is known as “The Dreamer” and these two types blend well together. They both care about what is just and fair. The One seeks fairness through rules, while the Nine seeks fairness in making sure everyone has a chance to voice their opinion. When healthy this Nine is balanced and productive. They stand up for what they believe is right. They are self-assured and they share their opinions, thoughts, and ideas with confidence. When they are not healthy they are silently judgmental and resentful. They avoid their problems while quietly blaming others for their flaws. The 9w8 is known as “The Comfort Seeker” and this combination is like oil and water. The Nine wants to keep the peace and maintain harmony with others, while the Eight is all too comfortable and willing to vocalize when they disagree. When healthy this Nine is steady and able to stand their ground. They are independent, present to themselves, and fully connected with others. They are positive and have a calming presence. When they are not healthy they are quiet and withdrawn. Instead of working through conflict they avoid or cut the conflict completely out of their life leading to the very thing they want to avoid most: loss of connection with others. Wrapping up Season 5 of Nine Lives is a discussion of Enneagram Nine. Rachel Rudeen, Cherri Rodriguez and yours truly join forces to form this panel. Enneagram Nines are known as the peacemakers and mediators. While these roles are powerful gifts that Nines contribute to the world, in their less developed stages, Nines tend to seek peace by avoiding conflict at all costs. They deny their anger, go along to get along and fall asleep to their own priorities. Another characteristic of Enneagram Nines is their pursuit of creating and maintaining harmony. Our panelists speak to the challenge of creating genuine harmony. True harmony only exists when all voices are represented, including the Nine's. This pushes Enneagram Nines out of their propensity to merge and not show up when needed. Their gift of harmony then becomes the secret sauce for creating community. Rachel is a mom, photographer and ceramic pottery artist. Find her at rachelrudeen.com. Cherri is a fundraising coach and operates her business, Fruitful Fundraising (fruitfulfundraising.co). A great responsibility comes with leadership and impact-making, whether in your personal relationships with your children or your professional relationships as an entrepreneur. But we often find that what we put out into the world isn't always received as we had hoped, leading to a breakdown in communication or, worse, people withdrawing from us. Eleven years ago, when I was learning about the Enneagram, the most significant aha moment I had was recognizing how other Enneagram types might receive me. So, what's the most important thing you need to know about your Enneagram type for more self-awareness, effective communication, and better personal and professional relationships? In this episode of "Lead With The Enneagram," we're exploring the different motivations and needs of each Enneagram type, offering a deeper understanding of their unique strengths and challenges. From the Enneagram Ones' high standards to the Enneagram Nines' goal of peace and harmony, I'll walk you through how the way each type interacts might be perceived by other Enneagram types and the steps each of us can take to overcome potential pitfalls and be more effective in our personal and professional relationships. Listen in for deep insight into your type and to learn how to navigate and enhance your relationships with individuals of different Enneagram types by understanding their perspectives and adapting your communication style accordingly. Accurate typing is essential in the Enneagram, and most of the time, online assessments are inaccurate. A lot of what Marissa talks about in her book has to do with personality styles, so I invited her back on TOL to talk about the influence on her Enneagram type to her life both in the workplace, and as a mom.   Nines are known as The Peacemakers, and truth be told, some of my favorite people on this planet identify as an Enneagram 9. Below are a few things that we talked about during our conversation: The difference between merging and martyring Why 9s avoid controversy and despise conflict The importance of alone time for 9s Why procrastination is real. The role of decision fatigue Marissa shares how her “nine behavior” traces back to childhood. As someone who parents a nine, I would have paid a million dollars to have this wisdom when my daughter was small.  I cannot think of a better guest to wrap up this series. If you haven’t listened to the other episodes, I encourage you to head back and check them out.  It’s so fascinating to see how each of the different types relates to clutter. We want to thank all of our listeners for tuning in and sharing our episodes -- helping us reach our biggest milestone yet -- 11 million downloads! As we celebrate this month, we'll be revisiting a few of Ian's favorite episodes that show just how powerful the Enneagram is as a tool for personal transformation. In today's replay, we take a look at the adaptable, caring, and "go with the flow" nature of Enneagram Nines.  To keep the peace, Nines can over-accommodate in an unconscious effort to avoid conflict and "fall asleep" to their own needs.   Our guest, Lysa Terkeurst, #1 New York Times bestselling author and Enneagram Nine, explains why it's important for The Peacemaker not to confuse the desire for peace with the disease to please and to recognize the delight of being yourself. Lysa TerKeurst is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Uninvited and It’s Not Supposed to be This Way as well as 21 other books. As president of Proverbs 31 Ministries, Lysa and her staff are passionate about teaching the Word of God in ways that get people excited to live the Bible out loud. To close our spectacular Enneagram series, last but certainly not least (we promise, Nines!), we’re diving into the earnest and endearingly sincere Peacemakers with Jen’s wonderful friend and all-around good human, author Sarah Bessey. Fondly called the crown of the Enneagram, Type Nines have the gift to be fully empathetic, to love and accept without judgement because they can see others as made in God’s image. For a Nine, everyone belongs. This type may seem slow to move sometimes—that’s because they’re content to live in this very moment. Sarah demonstrates the ways that Nines can be mediators, but she also shares how a Nine’s shadow side leans away from conflict and into numbness and routine, pushing them to be a little sloth-like. In their unhealthiest state, a Nine’s identity morphs into whoever’s surrounding them at the moment. But as they grow, Nines realize they don’t have to sacrifice who they are just to keep the peace—their voices are valuable and deserve to be heard. Stay tuned ‘til the end to hear how Ryan O’Neal (AKA Sleeping at Last) created a piece that was extremely vulnerable and painfully honest, as he had to confront his own weaknesses as a type Nine in order to grow into his full potential. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! What happens when an Enneagram 9 stops overthinking and starts making decisions? Enneagram Nines have an incredible ability to see all sides of any given circumstance, but that commitment to find the best option consumes an enormous amount of mental energy and can leave them exhausted and stuck. However, when Nines learn to stop overthinking they can start spending more time on things that matter and that bring more peace, love and joy into their lives. Today’s guest, author Anne Bogel, gets to the heart of decision-making as an Enneagram Nine and shares what perfectionism-driven overthinking looks like and suggests a few disciplines that Nines can use to get out of analysis paralysis. Anne Bogel is the author of Reading People and I’d Rather Be Reading and creator of the blog Modern Mrs. Darcy and the podcasts What Should I Read Next? and Óne Great Book.  She’s been featured in O, the Oprah Magazine, Real Simple, Bustle, Refinery, The Washington Post and more.  Bogel’s popular book lists and reading guides have established her as a tastemaker among readers, authors, and publishers. Her latest book, Don’t Overthink It offers practical strategies on replacing negative thoughts with positive thought patterns that will make an immediate and lasting difference in how you deal with questions both big and small.

Enneagram Nines, or The Peacemakers, are open and receptive in every way. They can see both sides to everything and they have a profound awareness of the interconnectedness of all things in creation.  Their unconscious motivation is to avoid conflict at all costs, to maintain a relational connection, maintain the status quo, and preserve inner peace and harmony.  To preserve this inner peace and harmony, Nines create internal and external boundaries.  The inner boundary is to tamp down any feelings or desires that might disturb their calm inner sea.  The external boundary exists to protect them from anything external that might cause inner tumult. This desire for inner and outer peace is so innate that Nines unconsciously absorb other people's emotional energy.  Today on Typology, our guest 'Science Mike' McHargue shares his journey through the inner sanctum of a Nine and his process of building a healthy connection to anger.  Mike provides so much insight into the life of the Peacemaker we had to make it a two-part show.  Mike McHargue (better known as Science Mike) is an author, podcaster, and speaker who travels the world helping people understand the science of life's most profound experiences. His bestselling debut book, Finding God in the Waves, has helped thousands understand faith in the 21st century. Mike hosts Ask Science Mike, a weekly question and answer podcast helping hundreds of thousands explore the questions they've always been afraid to ask. He also co-hosts The Liturgists Podcast with his friend Michael Gungor.
