Codie Sanchez is the Founder of Contrarian Thinking, the Co-founder of Unconventional Acquisitions, and the Owner of 26 “boring businesses.” She is also a Board Member at Entourage Effect Capital, The Arcview Group, and the Marijuana Policy Project and a Member of AEI's Enterprise Club. She invests in women-led startups through Plum Alley, WAVE, and The Vinetta Project and cannabis companies through Cresco Capital Partners. In this episode… As an entrepreneur, how do you achieve financial freedom? It can be scary taking the first step toward owning a business, but what if it doesn't have to be? Whether you're a first-time owner or a serial entrepreneur, it is possible to stop trading your time for money. Codie Sanchez was working for a paycheck until she changed her perspective and began focusing on the cash flow of her business. When you think like an owner, everything changes. Now, she's here to share how to succeed as a business owner — and how she's empowering others through a community of like-minded entrepreneurs. In this episode of the Quiet Light Podcast, Joe Valley sits down with Codie Sanchez, Founder of Contrarian Thinking and Co-founder of Unconventional Acquisitions, to talk about building equity and scaling your brand. Codie discusses how to view your business as a gateway to passive cash flow, the value of connecting with others to share insights and ideas, and her tips for building sellable assets and value with your brand.
Meet Codie Sanchez, a self-made contrarian investing guru who wants to help you get rich. Codie is a reformed journalist turned investor who over the course of her career has bought and sold 66+ businesses, built x2 8 figure and x2 7 figure businesses and now runs a portfolio of 26 companies, ranging from car washes to laundromats to a paid newsletter business. It may not sound glamorous, but you can earn a healthy income from owning trailer parks. Or maybe investing in laundromats, car washes, or tiny home Airbnbs is more your speed. These are the kinds of straightforward, but perhaps overlooked money-making ideas that Codie Sanchez both practices and preaches. The 34-year-old self-made and self-styled investment expert is the co-founder of Unconventional Acquisitions, an educational provider that helps people learn how to buy small businesses. She also founded Contrarian Thinking, a newsletter that discusses investment themes and trends, as well as offering a “how-to playbook on ways to cash flow.” But she quickly shifted her professional focus from journalism to the world of high finance — working for Vanguard, Goldman Sachs and State Street, and becoming head of Latin American investments for First Trust. She also served as a partner at Entourage Effect Capital, investing in the growing cannabis industry. We caught up with Sanchez and asked her to explain a little more about what she does and how she became an investing expert. Connect with Codie here: Twitter LinkedIn Want to hear about new episodes? We are back for another High-Rise episode and this week we welcome a new special guest host Matt Hawkins, managing partner at Entourage Effect Capital. Matt brings some great perspective to the conversation as we delve into some of the latest developments on the Cannabis Administration and Opportunity Act. It is still to early to pass this important legislation, but we break down two of its key aspects and why they're so important to the industry. In SSO news we dig into the Harborside and Sublime deal that is currently in the works and how it could serve as a great example on how to navigate through California's complicated state regulations in the right way. Finally we talk a bit about an MJBiz article that came out about California cannabis brands that are beginning to sell directly to consumers, (a.k.a. D2C) and how that might bypass the need for brick and mortar businesses. As always there is so much to talk about and this episode is no exception! Thanks for tuning-in please remember to download and subscribe to the podcast!

"The first time you put $1 in the stock market you're probably not going to get $100 back immediately. Eventually, "the music will stop" and stock markets will see more sellers than buyers. To protect themselves, investors should seek recession-resistance sectors of the economy and try to access their own cash flows. In this segment of HyperFast Wealth, host Dan Lesniak speaks with Institutional Investor Codie Sanchez. Codie is the Managing Director and Partner at Entourage Effect Capital. From inspiring journalist, to major player in the cannabis industry, to where she is today, Codie has amassed the knowledge and experience to teach entrepreneurs all about how to invest successfully without worrying about all the noise from the outside! Episode Highlights: Codie has always found ways to use commerce to enable others to grow and succeed. Starting off as a human-trafficking and drug-smuggling journalist in Mexico opened Codie's eyes to how unfair the world is. Codie worked her way through the corporate world until she was able to enter into the cannabis industry. In an attempt to help small businesses right now, Codie has found a way to help owners connect with potential buyers. Staying curious about what helps fuel growth is what drives many entrepreneurs to be successful. Many small business owners don't even know that they can sell their businesses. Too many people focus on people liking them instead of making sure that they are respected. The world is filled with negative feedback loops that the pioneers of business will have to get comfortable with. Moments that legitimized Codie's beliefs and vision felt really good because she began to be an expert in the cannabis space. The cannabis industry has cratered to the lowest valuations in a long time, which presents massive opportunities for investors. Codie's company invests in companies that do $10-20M in revenue but need more money to scale. Platform plays and distressed deals are the two types of companies that Codie sees as opportunities for capitalization. B2B, selling to consumers, and structured systems are the three types of businesses that Codie likes. After a trip to Zion National Park, Codie began to invest in land in National Parks and rents them out for camping. It's hard to get the financing to buy land; you must have the capital to put down upfront. Those looking to sell can stay on to get some cash revenue, but not to run the business. Businesses that are not up for sale potentially have someone who can stay on and run the operations. Codie outlines three different ways to run a business after investing in it. Buying real estate has been commoditized, but buying businesses has not made it there yet. Avoid the fear of missing out; focus on the great deals that you have been a part of. Stepping into her own belief in herself took Codie a long time to do. Start as early as possible when it comes to chasing your passion. Codie's course will give people the knowledge necessary to walk away and buy a business of their own. 3 Key Points: The first people through the wall are always going to get a little bloody. Going out into the unknown of the business world will always be rejected by those who don't see your vision. At its lowest valuation in years, the cannabis industry is filled with opportunities to invest at a low price in a market that is only going to grow. There are multiple ways to run a business after investing in it, ranging from solely investing all the way to completely running the operations. Expanding the adult use market even further with Codie Sanchez, Managing Director of Entourage Effect Capital. Investors are showing a distinct preference for companies focused on the adult-use market over medical. From 2017 through mid-May this year, investors poured $1.8 billion into adult-use focused companies according to data in the MGO | ELLO Cannabis Private Investment Review, powered by PitchBook Data. By comparison, the medical segment trailed markedly, with $730 million total invested over the same period. According to a recent Benzinga article, Americans will spend about $12.5 billion on adult-use cannabis this year, an increase of one-third over 2018. And the potential for growth in the years to come is significant as more states legalize adult use. Cannabis is also becoming a foundational ingredient in products such as beer and energy drinks, edibles, and balms, expanding the adult use market even further. We dive into if she thinks that investment into adult use comes with fewer challenges. As well as about the changes underway, how all of this changes the company's value proposition as a firm, and much more. Codie Sanchez is a Managing Director and Partner at Entourage Effect Capital (formerly Cresco Capital Partners), venture capital and private equity fund in the legalized cannabis space with $100M in AUM. She previously built and lead First Trust's ($120B) Latin America Investment business. Prior to that, she held positions in equity analysts at Goldman Sachs ($1.5T), institutional fixed income at State Street ($2.8T), and international equity at Vanguard ($5.3T). She started her career as a journalist where she won the JFK award and the Howard Buffett Foundation grant for covering human trafficking. Sanchez is a pundit and columnist on investing, macro trends, cannabis, and startups. She has been highlighted on The Today Show, Forbes, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, People en Español, Business Wire, Cheddar, etc.
