God Is Focused a Jesus Follower's Heart, and He Changes Their Thinking and Attitude Through a Change in Their Heart MESSAGE SUMMARY: God makes you a new creation through your new heart created by an indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life. God is interested in your heart, and He wants you to have a righteous heart– God changes your thinking and your attitude through a change in your heart. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul describes the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in Jesus Followers resulting in a new person, with a new heart, in Jesus: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.". As a Jesus Follower, you are salt and light, comes from your righteousness – not just in deed and appearance but, also, in your inner person -- your heart.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Unclutter my heart, O God, until I am quiet enough to hear you speak out of the silence. Help me in these few moments to stop, to listen, to wait, to be still, and to allow your presence to envelop me. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 23). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Past Failures. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Grace. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Sermon Summary: Pastor Phil delivered a sermon on November 5, 2023, emphasizing the importance of being quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger in the context of accepting and obeying the word of God. He stressed the need to actively listen to God's teachings and apply them to one's life. The sermon highlighted the detrimental effects of anger and quick judgment, calling for a more thoughtful and obedient approach to Scripture. Key Points: Quick to Listen: The sermon began by highlighting the significance of active and attentive listening, especially to God's word. Pastor Phil emphasized that listening is not just about hearing but about understanding and applying the teachings. Slow to Speak: The sermon encouraged individuals to be cautious with their words, avoiding hasty judgments and critical comments. Words have the power to hurt or bless, and Christians should strive to speak words that uplift and encourage. Slow to Anger: Anger can hinder spiritual growth and damage relationships. The sermon stressed the importance of controlling one's temper and practicing patience, even in challenging situations. The Mirror of Scripture: Pastor Phil discussed how the Bible serves as a mirror, revealing our true selves and reflecting God's will for our lives. He emphasized the need to not only look at the mirror (Scripture) but also to act upon it, becoming doers of the word. Questions for Personal or Group Study: What are some practical steps you can take to become a better listener, especially when it comes to God's word? How can you become more intentional about being slow to speak and avoiding hurtful words in your daily interactions? What strategies can you employ to manage and control your anger, ensuring it doesn't negatively impact your relationships and spiritual growth? How can you make the Bible a more active and transformative part of your life, moving from being a hearer of the word to a doer of the word? Supplementary Bible Verses: James 1:19-20: "Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God." (ESV) Proverbs 15:1: "A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger." (ESV) Practical Applications for the Church Family: Commit to spending dedicated time each day in prayer and Bible study, actively listening to God's word and seeking to understand its application in your life. Practice a moment of reflection before speaking, especially in times of conflict or disagreement, to ensure your words are constructive and not hurtful. Develop strategies for managing and diffusing anger, such as deep breathing, prayer, or seeking wise counsel from fellow believers. Encourage one another in the church community to become doers of the word, sharing experiences and insights on how Scripture is actively shaping your lives.

Looking Back, Looking ForwardVision 2021 Chase Gardner – Teaching Pastor, Jason Gore – Lead PastorWhen we come to the end of the year, it's important to remember where we've been and what we've accomplished. It's also the perfect time to look forward to what we can do together in the future. We're looking back through the past year and looking forward to what God is doing in and through Hope Community Church. One of the best and most powerful things you can do in moments when your strength seems to fail a little is to look back.Remember the faithfulness of God.Psalm 77:1-2 (ESV)Psalm 77:11-15a (ESV)______________________________________________________________________________Proverbs 29 says, “Where there is no vision, the people will perish…”What if we could ALL ‘came back…' and it still wasn't enough? What if the real threat was not the lack of people ‘in church' on Sunday… but rather the lack of people thinking and living biblically Monday – Sunday?Jeremiah 29:1-7 (NIV) “Seek the welfare of the city…”Three takeaways from this text on how to be God's people in exile:1. Put down roots and play long ball.2. Build strong, God-honoring families.3. Invest in your community. We Must:1. Strengthen the core of families by investing in Marriage, Parenting and Youth.2. Equip and empower the Church to follow Jesus's mission in our current reality.– “If we only focus primarily on a 1hr/week experience, we all will become irrelevant to a 'lost' world faster than we realize.”– “We are going to have to learn how to take our mission of ‘loving people where they are… and encouraging them to grow in their relationship with Jesus…' out of the walls of our campuses.”3. Meet the needs of our community even if they never attend a church.4. Mobilize the church through leveraging online platforms.BE THE CHURCH.Two questions to consider:1. What is one thing you can do to strengthen your family this Christmas?2. What is one thing you can do to impact another family in your community this Christmas?Support Hope Community Church's mission by donating at gethope.net/give.

God Is Focused on a Jesus Follower's Heart, and He Changes Their Thinking and Attitude Through a Change in Their Heart MESSAGE SUMMARY: God makes you a new creation through your new heart created by an indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Resentment. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Compassion. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). NYT Bestseller https://untamedbook.com/ (Untamed) restyles the philosophy of an old, dead white dead in the chic new fashions of social justice and feminism. Like Jean Jaques Rousseau, Glennon Doyle preaches and lives out the gospel of self-expression as the way to happiness. She teaches her readers how to be Cheetahs: wild and set free from the cages of society. But does her advice lead to a life well lived? Did this life philosophy work out for Rousseau? Does it align with Jesus' path to the good life? Listen to https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/staff/keith-simon/ (Pastors Keith Simon) and https://www.thecrossingchurch.com/staff/patrick-miller/ (Patrick Miller) as they assess Doyle's advice and give their own. MESSAGE SUMMARY:  Jesus’ Followers Become New Persons Because He Changes Hearts which Lead to Changes in Actions and Inner Persons God makes you a new creation through your new heart created by an indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life. God is interested in your heart, and He wants you to have a righteous heart – God changes your thinking and your attitude through a change in your heart. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul describes the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in followers of Jesus resulting in a new person, with a new heart, in Jesus: “Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.". As a follower of Jesus, you become salt and light that results from your righteousness. Therefore, you change into a new person in Jesus and not just changes in your actions and appearance. You, also, experience changes in your inner person, your heart.   TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: Today, I affirm that because I am in Jesus Christ, I will entrust to Him my future. I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.  (From 2 Timothy 1:12). SCRIPTURE REFERENCE (ESV): Proverbs 3:1-7; Romans 2:29; Romans 8:26-28; Psalms 18a:1-10. Weekend Sermon Notes Text: Proverbs 22:6 ESV   If you let your kids have their way, they’ll expect to always get their way and struggle in life.   English Translations: Train up a child in the “way he should go” or “the right way” English Translations add words not in the Hebrew: Train up a child in the “way he should go” or “the right way” Hebrew: Train up a child in his way   Option 1: Train a child in accordance with his nature Proverbs 20:9 (ESV) Waltke: the six other references to the youth characterize his way as foolish (1:4; 7:7; 22:15; 23:13; 29:15; etc.)   Option 2: Sarcastic – If you let your kids have their way, they’ll expect to always get their way and struggle in life Proverbs 22:15 (ESV) Proverbs 29:15 (ESV)   Houston Police Dept on “How to Raise a Delinquent” Begin with infancy to give the child everything he wants. In this way he will grow to believe the world owes him a living. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. This will make him think he's cute. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21 and then let him "decide for himself." Avoid use of the word "wrong". It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him to believe later, when he is arrested for stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being persecuted. Pick up everything he leaves lying around - books, shoes, clothes. Do everything for him so that he will be expecting it. Give a child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn his own. Why should he have things as tough as you had them? Satisfy his every craving for food, drink, and comfort. See that every sensual desire is gratified. Denial may lead to harmful frustration. Take his side against neighbors, teachers, policemen. They are all prejudiced against your child. Prepare for a life of grief. You will be likely to have it.   Proverbs 23:13-14   1) Secure a confession, 2) Assure of unconditional love, 3) Acknowledge your sin and need of Jesus   Proverbs 22:6 ESV 6 Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.   Proverbs 20:9 ESV 9 Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”?   Proverbs 29:15 ESV 15 The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.   Proverbs 23:13-14 ESV 13Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you strike him with a rod, he will not die. 14If you strike him with the rod, you will save his soul from Sheol.

Wisdom-Trek / Creating a Legacy Welcome to Day 1175 of our Wisdom-Trek, and thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Think and Follow Through – Wisdom Unplugged Wisdom – the final frontier to true knowledge. Welcome to Wisdom-Trek where our mission is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Hello, my friend, I am Guthrie Chamberlain, your captain on our journey to increase wisdom and create a living legacy.  Thank you for joining us today as we explore wisdom on our 2nd millennium of podcasts. This is https://wisdom-trek.com/day-1175/ (Day 1175) of our trek, and it is time for our 3-minute mini trek called Wisdom Unplugged.  This short nugget of wisdom includes an inspirational quote with a little bit of additional content for today's trek.  Consider this your vitamin supplement of wisdom for today.  So let's jump right in with today's nugget. Today's quote is from E.V. Rickenbacker, and it is, “I can give you a six-word formula for success: Think things through — then follow through.” Think and Follow Through Many times while we were growing up our dad would tell us boys as we approached a problem to think through it slow and methodically. So often my brothers and I just wanted to rush through a task or project to get it completed. Dad knew that if we would take time to think through the issue and come up with a method or plan for completing the task before we took action, that our chance of being successful in that task or project would be greatly improved. While our impatience during those growing up years caused us to ignore Dad's advice many times, the older we grew, the more we realized that his advice was very wise and that he was training us to be prepared for the many obstacles that we would face in life. His instructions have come back to me many times, and still, to this day, I recognize it is an excellent piece of advice that I continue to apply. Just as our quote today instructs us, the formula for success is to first think things through, that is to create a plan of action, and then follow through the plan that we thought through. This is truly what we need to do in order to be successful. Think, then follow through. Let us make a habit of this with each task we have to complete, project we are working on, or obstacle that we encounter on our path to success. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+21:5&version=NLT;ESV (Proverbs 21:5) Good planning and hard work lead to prosperity, but hasty shortcuts lead to poverty. That's a wrap for today's Wisdom Unplugged quote. If you would like free access to my database of over 11,000 inspirational quotes, the link is available on the main page of https://wisdom-trek.com (Wisdom-Trek.com). As you enjoy these nuggets of wisdom, encourage your friends and family to join us and then come along tomorrow for another day of our Wisdom-Trek, Creating a Legacy. How will reverence for God change how you think? Consider specific examples. What are ways the rich are tempted to deny God? What are ways the poor are tempted to profane the name of the Lord? Are there temptations that are particular to people in distinct economic categories? If not, how do you think about this? What are some things that are more important to have than money?God is the creator of all human beings. How should this direct how you think about and treat others? In what ways do we judge the poor, and why? What are some of the excuses we make for the opinions we hold? What are some of the deeper problems we have (reasons for our judgment)? Why is integrity more valuable than gold? How do you get integrity? What are reasons we avoid seeing the poor or hearing their cries? What character traits do you need to be able to look and hear? Does seeing and hearing mean you have to respond? If so, what are honorable ways to respond (think of particular situations where you are tempted to ignore people in need)?Should a Christian give to pan-handlers (people on the street or in the subway who ask for money)? Why or why not? What are some principles to help you understand your options so your actions honor God?Do you believe you are spiritually poor? What is the significance of the claim that Jesus paid a debt for us when he suffered on the cross, for how we think about people in the world who have great needs? What are ways that you can view your own generosity as acts of worship? How can giving to others be a means of giving to God?Prayer of ConfessionFather God, you have made us and given us all things. We have loved the things you have made, but not all of the people you have made. We confess our pride and arrogance towards the poor. We confess we have closed our eyes and ears. We understand that we have insulted you, who have made all people, in how we have judged and disregarded the suffering. We acknowledge our own poverty, and pray for your generosity and mercy to us. Thank you for giving us what we don’t deserve, and for sending Jesus to pay a debt of sin we can never repay. Make us wise so that in revering you, we will walk with integrity. Amen.

When Dad has to work late (again) and mom feels like she's soldiering on with the children, is there a gracious response to give? Although the long days might leave a wife stuck in cycles of comparison with other families and even anger, God hasn't left her without hope and help. In this episode, Emily interviews Laura, who shares a bit of her experience as a mom whose husband works long hours. Whether your own husband just misses the occasional dinner, or travels for months at time, you're not going to want to miss the wisdom she shares! The gospel turns "fairness" on its head, and offers wives a better way forward - where her husband (or his job) isn't the enemy, and all her needs are met in Christ. Galatians 2:11-21 No other gospel Galatians 2:11-14 Peter went to Antioch, which consisted mostly of Gentile Christians. Jerusalem council resulted in accepting Gentile believers as fellow Christians, but allowed for the distinctions to continue. What happened, when Jewish Christians and Gentile Christians ate together? If a Christian Jew ate with a gentile! he would be in danger of violating ceremonial food laws. But If he refused to eat with them, that would undermine the principle that Gentiles should be fully accepted as part of God's family. The matter had been left to the conscience of the individual. In Antioch, they all ate together, Christian Jew and Gentile together at the table. Peter joined in the fellowship with the Gentiles. Some men, identified as "from James" - don't know if they were sent by James, Jesus brother and leader of the church in Jerusalem, or if they claimed to be. They are also referred to as the "circumcision group". In Acts 15, there was a group of Christians who were Pharisees who demanded that the Gentiles be circumcised. They came to Antioch, Peter withdrew from the Gentiles. Peter was a leader, his withdrawal made it seem that Gentile Christians could not be fully accepted as part of God's people. Hypocrisy - acting differently around different people. Why did Peter withdraw from the Gentile believers? He was afraid of what they would think about him - maybe afraid that his behavior would spark trouble within the Jerusalem church. Application: we all tend to act differently around different people. Our speech may be different, the words we use and the things we talk about. But God calls us to integrity - to be consistent regardless of who we're around. There may be times that we have to walk away from a conversation so as not to take part in it - in gossip, or talking behind someone's back. Walk away or change the direction of the conversation. That's what happens in middle school - kids build a clique and ostracize other kids. Sometimes adults continue that practice - obviously wrong and sinful. The other side of the coin is that we all want people to think highly of us. We might put on a face, or speech that we think they want to hear. Proverbs 29:25 We all want to fit in, be part of a group, but the we are warned not to seek acceptance from people, but from God. Seeking acceptance from people is a snare ( a noose to trap animals, or a ring in a bulls nose to lead it around). Seeking acceptance from people will lead you where you don't want to go. It's also a trap because being accepted by people is never enough. It will always leave you wanting, you will never be satisfied with it because your soul was built with the need to be accepted by your Creator. If you find your acceptance by Him, other seeking acceptance by people becomes less important - and you can be free of it. Paul rebuked Peter publicly because his behavior violated a key principle of the Christian faith: A man is justified not by observing the law, but by faith in a Jesus Christ. When Peter and the others came to Christ, they acknowledged that. Galatians 2:15-21 Paul's closing argument: 1. Jewish Law cannot make anyone right with God (15-16) 2. It is not a sin to not follow Jewish observances (17-18) 3. The Law leads to Christ, not further into legalism (19) 4. We are united with Christ in his death (to self) and new life (20-21) Paul's argument: The Judaizers say the law can make you right with God, no need for God's grace. The gospel says we are made right with God by his grace given to us in the death of Jesus. I was crucified with Christ, now Christ lives in me. Our old self - sinful, selfish, idol-worshipping - died and needs to die. My new self is Christ alive in me. Old self - old speech, old seeking acceptance by people needs to die. My new life with Christ changes my speech and my sense of acceptance. (Proverbs 11:12 ESV) (Proverbs 12:18 ESV)
