Psalms 40:5-8, Hebrews 10:5-10 Psalm 40:5–8 (Listen) 5 You have multiplied, O LORD my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. 6 In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted, but you have given me an open ear.1 Burnt offering and sin offering you have not required.7 Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:8 I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.” Footnotes [1] 40:6 Hebrew ears you have dug for me (ESV)Hebrews 10:5–10 (Listen) 5 Consequently, when Christ1 came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure.7 Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book.'” 8 When he said above, “You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings” (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, “Behold, I have come to do your will.” He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Psalm 110 (Listen)Sit at My Right HandA Psalm of David. 110:1 The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool.” 2 The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!3 Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power,1 in holy garments;2 from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.34 The LORD has sworn and will not change his mind, “You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.” 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he will shatter kings on the day of his wrath.6 He will execute judgment among the nations, filling them with corpses; he will shatter chiefs4 over the wide earth.7 He will drink from the brook by the way; therefore he will lift up his head.Footnotes[1] 110:3 Or on the day you lead your forces [2] 110:3 Masoretic Text; some Hebrew manuscripts and Jerome on the holy mountains [3] 110:3 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain [4] 110:6 Or the head(ESV)Hebrews 7:11–25 (Listen)Jesus Compared to Melchizedek11 Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? 12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. 13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests.15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.”18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God.20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.'”22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost1 those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.Footnotes[1] 7:25 That is, completely; or at all times(ESV)

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits. Proverbs 18:21(ESV) Hebrews 12:2-3, 2 Corinthians 10:2, Philippians 4:8-9 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
# Introduction It is one thing to have trouble, it is another thing to have trouble *and* feel as if God isn't near. It's different when you are in a trial with strong faith then when the trial is a test of faith. Pain and persecution of the outer man doesn't feel good, but when the inner man feels forsaken by God, that is a kind of consuming discomfort. Psalm 22 is a song of faith for those who feel forsaken. I've already used the word "feel" a few times. David wrote this song with correct theology; he knew that God is everywhere, as he wrote in Psalm 139:7. Where can we go from His presence? We use the word omnipresent. In Him we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28). So the truth of it is, in space and time, God is always near. In our experience, we do not always sense it. This song is from David and for the assembly. The choirmaster arranged it and taught it to the congregation for at least a couple reasons. And for us it's almost impossible to read (or sing) it as other than a prophetic song about Christ's experience during His crucifixion. Jesus quoted the first verse, the apostles applied many more lyrics to the events of Good Friday. There is no doubt that the Messiah fulfills it, in His first *and second* comings. One journal article even calls Psalm 22 the “Fifth Gospel.” It *is* about Christ, it is also about the king, and it is for the congregation. All of this works together for our instruction and edification as well. There have been numerous suggestions on how to divide the song, but we'll consider just two parts: the grief part (verses 1-21) and the glad part (verses 22-31). It is written “according to the Doe of the Dawn” with Doe or “Hind” (words for a female deer) likely referring to the tune for singing. # The Grief Part - His Faithful Lament (verses 1-21) There are a number of problems that the psalmist describes, but the worst is that he feels forsaken. > My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? > (Psalm 22:1 ESV) Jesus used the Aramaic of these words on the cross, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (Matthew 27:46). **Why have you forsaken me?** (verse 1). **Why are you so far from saving me?** (verse 1). **You do not answer** (verse 2). God seems to be **far from** the psalmist in verses 11 and 19. Verse 11 is the summary problem and request. > Be not far from me, > for trouble is near, > and there is none to help. > (Psalm 22:11, ESV) The song starts with questions (verse 1), with crying (verse 2), then with a contrast between those who were heard and rescued and the psalmist who is alone (verses 3-11). He is singing in the dark. The song recounts deep theology, but the truth almost makes the experience worse. **You are...enthroned on the praises of Israel** (verse 3), inhabiting and exalted by the nation's worship. As the **fathers**, the previous generation, worshipped and **trusted** they were **delivered** (verses 4-5). David knew the stories, but felt at the moment as if the inheritance had been spent. The psalmist doesn't feel heard, he doesn't even feel like a man; **I am a worm and not a man** (verse 6). Those around him despise him, mock him, and make mocking gestures at him, they **make mouths at me** (verses 6-7); the worst Monty Python taunts (and as applied to Jesus, Matthew 27:39). Verse 8 makes clear that they know the psalmist identifies with Yahweh, but apparently Yahweh has rejected this psalmist because there is no rescue (also to Jesus, Matthew 27:43). He rehearses the truth: **Yet you are he who took me from the womb...from my mother's womb you have been my God** (verse 9). His whole life, physically and spiritually has been dependent on God. But he's attacked as if by animals. There are bulls, lions, and dogs. The **strong bulls of Bashan** were from a fertile area and these fat bulls came circling and biting (verses 12-13). His own physical strength was *drained*, **poured out like water**. He couldn't keep it together, **all my bones are out of joint**. His courage was like wet bread, **my heart is like wax, it is melted within my breast** (verse 14). He can't cope. It was as if his clay pot was shattered and had been sitting out in the dessert all summer, a **potsherd** (verse 15). **You lay me in the dust of death** acknowledges how he got into this position. The **dogs** are back to sniff and snarl and bite; they surround the psalmist and have him circled. **They have pierced my hands and feet** (verse 16) is a rough translation, but certainly one that works by the time the apostles apply it to Jesus (see also Zechariah 12:10, John 19:37, and Revelation 1:7). He's so sickly and gaunt that his bones are obvious, the dogs are glad, ready to gnaw (verse 17). Death is close, because they're already dividing up his clothes to make a game out of it (verse 18). Yet he doesn't forget the Lord. He says again, **But you, O LORD, do not be far off!** (verse 19) Come and help and deliver and rescue. All the animals are mentioned again, in reverse order. Verse 21, a word of unknown meaning, the wild oxen or **horns of the unicorns** (KJV), also considered a buffalo, or maybe rhinoceros. They are symbols of the threats. # The Glad Part - His Faithful Praise (verses 22-31) Such a significant change in tone happens around this point in the psalm that some commentators have invented a scenario in which the worshipper gets a "new" word from the Lord through a priest or prophet such that now he can rejoice. That's clever, but not necessary. The place to be is with the assembly. > I will tell of your name to my brothers, > in the midst of the congregation > I will praise you. > (Psalm 22:22, ESV) Hebrews 2:12 applies this to Christ who suffered in order to save and sanctify His brothers (see Hebrews 2:10-11, too). There is a call to praise Him, to glorify Him, to stand in awe of Him (verse 23). It's for those who fear Him, who have His word and His promises. It's also a reminder that the LORD does not *actually* forget or forsake His people, even though they feel like it. > For he has not despised or abhorred > the affliction of the afflicted, > and he has not hidden his face from him, > but has heard, when he cried to him. > (Psalm 22:24, ESV) He repeats that he will praise in public and obey in front of the God-fearers. Such worship is not limited to Israel, but for both Jews (“offspring of Jacob” and “offspring of Israel” verse 23) and Gentiles. > All the ends of the earth shall remember > and turn to the LORD. > and all the families of the nations > shall worship before You. > For kingship belongs to the LORD, > and he rules over the nations. > (Psalm 22:27-28, ESV) **All the ends of the earth** is phrase found thirteen times in the Old Testament (Gerald Wilson). We have come a long way since the beginning of the psalm. But the discipline of prayer, of public worship, of remembering, and of hope pull us toward the expectation that salvation for anyone is in submission to the Lord. Depression to eschatology, emotions to politics. Whether men are rich or poor, old or young, their hope is in the Lord. Those who fear Him will tell their kids, their grandkids, and fear of the Lord will be their future for their good. A feast will be provided for the faithful (verses 26, 29). **They shall come and proclaim his righteousness**, the testament that the Lord does what is proper. # Conclusion It is probably fine if you have never felt this way, as long as you are thankful, though you wouldn't know how thankful you really should be. Agony is like a test, and the anguish is also forming Christ in our hearts. If you have felt, maybe are feeling, this way, friend, you are not alone. *Your Savior knows*. A thousand years of saints sang the song between David and Jesus, a couple thousand more years of saints have been singing it since. This is how you do it. This is the response of faith when feeling forsaken. Accused, criticized, canceled, can't cope? The tools, the tactics against loneliness in this Psalm, include: - sing historical truth about God's works - sing and don't stop - sing so obviously that you can be mocked for it - sing with the assembly who may not have the same feelings as you do this very moment; which means, listen to *them* when you can't seem to get your mouth open. Get ye to church. - sing about His triumph that He brings you into, even if through the valley “My God” in faith is fine. That there can never be first person singular is silly; those criticisms aren't consistent with scripture. What is not fine is never first person plural, the *we*, the assembly. A typical second level temptation to the first level temptation of sadness is isolation. What is not fine is refusing to subject your subjective feelings to truth. Do. Not. Do. It. ---------- ## Charge I don't know exactly how you feel, but the Lord does. I don't know how you feel, but I know you are not actually alone. I don't know how you feel, but I know that the Lord wants you to live by faith; your need for faith hasn't expired. So though you cannot steer Him, you must stay stuck to Him and stand firm in faith. ## Benediction: > The LORD our God be with us, as he was with our fathers. May he not leave us or forsake us, that he may incline our hearts to him, to walk in all his ways and to keep his commandments, his statutes, and his rules, which he commanded our fathers. (1 Kings 8:57–58, ESV)

My last dollar, my last word, and my last hour. URGENCY-importance requiring swift action. Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (ESV) Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NIV) THE ONE THING: QUESTIONS & CHALLENGE: 1-Is my faith wavering anywhere right now? Why? 2-Do I stir up others to do good deeds, or do I “stir up the dust”? 3-Would those around me call me encouragement? 4-What is the hardest thing for me to surrender….$ or time? 5-Who needs my time? Who can I invest in? 6-Do I have any relationships to reconcile? **7 Day Reading Challenge: Hebrews 10, and or 2 Peter 3 **To Remember: I don't need to change the world, how can I impact the 20' around me? He came to serve others, not to be served. If we don't move, the movement will happen for us. I would rather see a sermon than hear a sermon. Your job and purpose are different.**
Lady V's Devotional Episode Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT) says: The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the rescue each time. Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT) Devotional I'm a mother. And ever since my daughter was a baby, I had my ears tuned to hear her cry. And, although she is an adult now, I'm still concerned about her well-being. So much so, I'll come running when she needs me! I want to know when something troubles her! I want to rescue her from any hurts or disappointments. I love her that much! No doubt, love makes you want to rescue the ones you love! So, when we read Psalm 34:17-19 (NLT), we are reminded of the Heavenly Father's love for us. The Heavenly Father tunes in to HIS children too. He's not a distant God. He is close enough to hear our cries! Yet, there are times when things are going bad, we forget that He hears us. We forget that we matter to God. But we must not forget that the Lord's love is infinite towards us. He has concerns about everything that troubles us. God is close! The Word of God says in Proverbs 18:24 (AMP), that He's a true, loving friend who is reliable and sticks closer than a brother. So, not only is He your Heavenly Father, He's also a reliable friend. He's closer than you think. Thus, He's the ONE you want to share your heart with. He's the ONE you call when you face trouble. He's the ONE that comes to your rescue. And, He's the ONE who deserves our total devotion. Beloved, don't go through troubles thinking that you are alone. When you feel like you're about to be swallowed up with trouble-- Remind yourself of Psalm 34. Then call out to the LORD. Ask for help! Then expect the LORD to come to your rescue. Let's pray... Heavenly Father, We come to you in the Name of Jesus with thanksgiving in our hearts. Father God, we thank YOU that we can always depend on YOU. You will not neglect us nor will you ignore our cries for help. We cast every care, every anxiety on YOU, because YOU care for us. Thank YOU that YOU are our helper and we do not have to fear. Thank YOU that we don't have to be anxious about anything. When we pray, YOU hear us and YOUR Peace guards our hearts and our minds in Christ Jesus. We can come boldly to the throne of grace and receive mercy and grace to help in the time of need. For this, we thank YOU LORD! We receive it done, and give YOU all the glory, in the Name of Jesus. Amen! Grace and Peace to you all! And remember that JESUS IS LORD!!! I hope that it will be interesting to you to share 14 verses that rang a bell for me this year. In collecting these verses, until recently I didn't plan on sharing these with you. Rather, this is more like letting you see verses I wanted to use to preach to myself. Stay tuned at the end. I would like YOU to share your favorites with me! Random:GW'20 Proverbs 29:2 2 When righteous people increase, the people ⌞of God⌟ rejoice, but when a wicked person rules, everybody groans. I've heard many groans this year. Remember, by the way, that when the nations of Israel and Judah sinned, one way that the Lord repeatedly punished them was by giving them bad kings. GW'20 2 Chronicles 26:16 16 But when he became powerful, his pride destroyed him. … My thought here is that some things have gone well in my life and ministry this year. But I pray that I can avoid pride, because it is such a trap and so dangerous. How King Uzziah must have regretted going into the temple to burn his own incense during all the remaining years of his life, excluded from visiting the temple, living in a separate house, and receiving reports of how his son was ruling in his place! PCF Ecclesiastes 10:1 1 One dead fly can make a whole bottle of perfume stink. Even so, a little foolishness can outweigh great wisdom and honor. I am at the place in my life where I want to finish well. I want to leave behind a good smell (so to speak) when people remember me. The word ‘foolishness' in Proverbs refers to bone-headed refusal to obey God. The last thing I want to do is to mess up at the finish line. A little stupidity at the end can leave a stench that obliterates a God-honoring testimony. GW'20 Proverbs 14:14 14 A heart that turns ⌞from God⌟ becomes bored with its own ways, but a good person is satisfied with God's ways. When I struggle with impure thoughts, it helps me to think that if I gave myself up to follow the cravings of my lower nature, my joy in that kind of a lifestyle would last about 10 minutes. Boredom would come so quickly, and eventually I am sure I would repent. But the resulting wound of remorse in my heart would never totally heal. Faith: PCF/GW Proverbs 23:17-18 17 Do not envy sinners in your heart. Instead, continue to fear the LORD.18 There is indeed a future for you, and your hope will not be crushed. I picked this verse to use in preaching to myself. I don't often envy sinners, but just the good fortunes of others. A powerful thing to remember when tempted to envy or lust is that I have a really fantastic future promised by God. The hoped for outcomes there are safe, in that place where moths and rust don't ruin things. Don't look back. Keep looking forward! The next verse tells us what we are gazing at. PCF/NLT 1 Peter 1:8-9 8 You love him, even though you have never seen Him.And even though you do not see Him,you believe in Himand celebrate with glorious joythat goes beyond anything words can say, 9 since you are receiving the proper goal of your faith, namely, the rescue of your lives. Love Him. Don't forget your rescue, and the privilege you have in knowing Jesus through all of God's Word. Keep hold of joy! PCF/GW Matthew 12:39 39A He responded, “The people of an evil and unfaithful era demand miraculous signs. … There is a reason why the Lord gives miracles sparingly. Miracles may help give someone's belief an initial nudge, but miracles never grow mature faith. People who seek to go from one miracle to another (if the Lord permits that to happen) continue to need to be spoon-fed. Most of the heroes of faith in chapter 11 of Hebrews did not receive what they trusted God for. They developed a faith that could stand any test Planning: NET Luke 14:28 28 Which of you, wanting to build a tower, doesn't sit down first and compute the cost? … This verse is leading up to Jesus' teaching about counting the cost of being his disciple. However, let me make a tangential point: Some people have gotten the idea that Christians shouldn't plan anything, but just be led by God without planning. I believe that this is totally false. A parent doesn't want to always have to tell his child to take a bath or to go to bed. God wants his children launched into this world prayerfully making their plans and moving ahead to complete them. GW'20 Proverbs 16:3 3 Entrust your efforts to the LORD, and your plans will succeed. Read that several times. So I ask you: What will happen if you don't make any plans? It's a good idea to pray! NET/PCF Matthew 7:11 11 If you then, though you are so sinful, know how to give good gifts to your children, just think how much more your Father in heaven will give good gifts to those who ask him! So I ask again: What will happen if you don't ask God for good gifts? (And by ‘gifts' I mean the answer to prayers about plans you have made for glorifying God in your life.) This is like NET Matthew 7:7 7 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened for you. I'll pause in order for you to answer out loud. So what happens if you don't knock, don't seek, and don't ask?! ESV Hebrews 11:6 6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him. This is the foundation for receiving what you ask God for in prayer. GW'20 Matthew 6:6 6 Whenever you pray, go to your room and close the door. Pray privately to your Father who is with you. Your Father sees what you do in private. He will reward you. After those other verses, I might as well follow the same pattern and ask: What will happen if you DON'T go into your private place and pray? There is a big promise there that I don't want to fail to cash in on! Consider: We are going before the Almighty King of the Universe. Through Christ Jesus, we have the wonderful privilege to be able to appear before God the Father and make our requests. I take this verse literally and urge you to do so also. That is, actually go into a private room, actually close the door. Realizing that you are entering the throne room of God, do what people did throughout the pages of the Bible: Humble yourself and be reverent! Get down at least on your knees (if you are physically able to do this) or even bow down lower. Pray. Then rejoice in that promise. ESV/PCF Psalms 145:18 18 The LORD is near to all who cry out to Him, to all who cry out sincerely. The ESV says, ‘to all who cry out in truth.' To me this means that we will not be just going through the motions, saying the right words, but not really meaning them. This is why I translate ‘in truth' as ‘sincerely'. Sincere prayer is also believing prayer, like James 1 tells us. I wrap up all that I have shared with this verse, Eccl 12:11. The ‘wise advisor' in this verse is Solomon, and definitely not me. However we can extend the idea to the Lord being the wisest advisor. The translation of this verse is my translation of how this verse comes out in the Plain Indonesian Translation. PET Eccl. 12:11 The teaching of a wise advisor is like a shepherd's stickthat is used to guide and direct his sheep.May every saying given by this advisor and shepherd be nailed into the mind of every learner and guide them in living rightly. Please pray for my visa to Indonesia to be granted, so that I can go there on November 2. If it is granted, I will need to quarantine for eight days in a hotel before being released to live like I normally do in Jakarta. Exciting things are happening there with the use of the Plain Indonesian New Testament. Sometime before the end of the year I want to publish a podcast with YOU reading your favorite verse from this year. Here's what to do: Use a voice recording app on your phone to record your favorite verse. Then say something about why that verse spoke to you. Try to limit your explanation to 3-5 sentences. I recommend going into an echo-free room, like maybe your clothes closet, and hold the phone away from where it will catch explosions of air when you say some words. Send the audio file to me at phil.fields@pbti.org. May the Lord bless you ‘real good'. Phil

You believed GOD for something that either hasn't come to pass yet, or not in the way you'd hoped...feeling like you didn't have "enough faith"? That's not true, it's a lie that the enemy tells to discourage us and keep us from believing GOD again or staying in faith. The Scripture says all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed...keep believing GOD for HIS promises, even if you haven't seen it yet, or it hasn't revealed itself as you'd hoped. Every day isn't a "feel good, feel great" day. Some days are hard for no discernible reason. But if you praise GOD when it's hard, when you don't feel like it, when you feel sad or depressed or any other overwhelming emotion...HE will HIMSELF lift you up and give you a new and brighter perspective of yourself and life as a whole. It's not easy, but give GOD a sacrifice of praise...watch and see what HE'LL do with it. REFLECTION QUOTES “The Son is the Father's All.” ~Athanasius (c. 196-373 AD), North African theologian and church leader “God cannot be Word-less, for the Word is God. Here then is a God who could never be anything but communicative, expansive, outgoing. Since God cannot be without this Word, he simply could not ever be reclusive.” ~Michael Reeves, president of Union School of Theology (Oxford) “All praise to Thee, eternal Lord, Clothed in a garb of flesh and blood; Choosing a manger for a throne, While worlds on worlds are Thine alone.” “This is that mystery which is rich in divine grace unto sinners: wherein by a wonderful exchange, our sins are no longer ours but Christ's; and the righteousness of Christ is not Christ's but ours. He has emptied himself of his righteousness that he might clothe us in it, and fill us with it: and he has taken our evils upon himself that he might deliver us from them.” ~Martin Luther (1483-1546), German pastor-reformer “God had one son on earth without sin, but never one without suffering.” ~St. Augustine (354-430), bishop in North Africa “Being heard is so close to being loved that for the average person, they are almost indistinguishable.” ~David Augsburger in Caring Enough to Confront “…the mystery…that Almighty God would come down…in the person of Jesus Christ and became one of us…. There is really nothing like that incredible social inversion of Almighty God coming here and living with us and dying with us.” ~Anne Rice, author of The Vampire Chronicles SERMON PASSAGE selections from Hebrews 1 & 2 (ESV) Hebrews 1 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs… 8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. Hebrews 2 9 …we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers…. 14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Clarifying Confusion Concerning Christ's Coming--When it comes to prophecy, we must seek to understand the Bible accurately and not read into it things that are not there. Critics and liberals have had a field day attacking the supposedly failed prophecies of Jesus as relates to the timing of His second coming.----The New Testament makes frequent reference to Jesus -coming.- However, such references do not always refer to the second coming. Instead, these texts sometimes refer to types of coming different from the second coming. One example of this concerns Jesus coming-not in person-but impersonally, and not in world-wide judgment, but in localized judgment against rebellious Israel.----People rightly conclude that there is only one second coming. However, Scripture itself never refers to Jesus' return in person as the -second coming- -it never uses the words Trinity, rapture, missionary or Bible, either-. Rather, it states that He will -appear- a second time-----ESV Hebrews 9-28 - Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time -----In a sense, it might help avoid confusion if we called it the second appearing of Jesus instead of His second coming. When we speak of the second coming, we mean His second coming in person, when he actually appears. Another other type of coming the New Testament speaks of is Jesus' impersonal coming in a localized judgment against rebellious Israel. This judgment coming took place in A.D. 70, within the lifetimes of the apostles.

Disciple Up #126 Faith – What It Is & What It Isn't By Louie Marsh Photo used in cover art by Alex Radelich on Unsplash International Podcast Day live broadcast on YouTube will be on September 30th at 6:00 PM, Arizona Time, which is the same (till the time change) as California Time. Hope you'll join me then. An E-Mail Poured In! Josh - Hello louie, I'm 20years old and a regular listener of your podcast and love what the lord is doing through this work. Just listened to your latest episode on "nostalgia isn't worship." I thought you did a great job discussing that topic. Its definitely a bigger pill to swallow for this generation. However the truth must be told. Listening to your podcasts are a big blessing in my life, praise God! I would love if you do a episode on faith. What is it? How do we get it? Use it. Is it something only God given? I found that there is a lot of scattered talk about faith In the bible. I'm looking for a good biblical talk on faith. Faithfulness. Faithlessness. Thank you so much for the work you do my God bless you. Sorry for the messy writing Check out the following Episodes for more information Faithfulness - http://discipleup.org/episode-71/ 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (ESV) WHAT IS FAITH? Key to this passage is verse 27 – 27 By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the king's anger; he persevered because he saw him who is invisible. Hebrews 11:27 (NIV) 27 by faith he left Egypt behind, not having been afraid of the wrath of the king, for, as seeing the Invisible One--he endured; Hebrews 11:27 (YLT) where Moses “saw” what was invisible, that's faith – apprehending what you cannot perceive by the five senses – it's a way of looking at your entire universe and life, both visible and invisible and understand that God is present and active there. Like Moses we must hold to this in spite of evidence that seems to say He's not there. Faith is the ground upon which all real life and wisdom and relationships must be built – otherwise we are like the foolish man who built on the sand. Matt 7:24-27 1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1 (ESV) Hebrews 11:1 Faith Without the article, indicating that it is treated in its abstract conception, and not merely as Christian faith. It is important that the preliminary definition should be clearly understood, since the following examples illustrate it. The key is furnished by v. 27, as seeing him who is invisible. Faith apprehends as a real fact what is not revealed to the senses. It rests on that fact, acts upon it, and is upheld by it in the face of all that seems to contradict it. Faith is a real seeing. Substance in describing the nature of the Son as the image or impress of God's essential being: but in this sense it is applied to faith, which is an act of the moral intelligence directed at an object; or a condition which sustains a certain relation to the object. It cannot be said that faith is substantial being. It apprehends reality: it is that to which the unseen objects of hope become real and substantial. Assurance gives the true idea. It is the firm grasp of faith on unseen fact. Now faith is (estin de pistis). He has just said that "we are of faith" (Hebrews 10:39), not of apostasy. Now he proceeds in a chapter of great eloquence and passion to illustrate his point by a recital of the heroes of faith whose example should spur them to like loyalty now. The assurance of things hoped for (elpizomenon hupostasis). Hupostasis is a very common word from Aristotle on and comes from huphistemi (hupo, under, histemi, intransitive), what stands under anything (a building, a contract, a promise). See the philosophical use of it in Hebrews 1:3, the sense of assurance (une assurance certaine, M‚n‚goz) in Hebrews 3:14, that steadiness of mind which holds one firm (2 Cor. 9:4). It is common in the papyri in business documents as the basis or guarantee of transactions. "And as this is the essential meaning in Hebrews 11:1 we venture to suggest the translation 'Faith is the title-deed of things hoped for'" (Moulton and Milligan, Vocabulary, etc.). Evidence conviction… adds to the simple idea of assurance a suggestion of influences operating to produce conviction which carry the force of demonstration. The word often signifies a process of proof or demonstration. So von Soden: "a being convinced. Therefore not a rash, feebly-grounded hypothesis, a dream of hope, the child of a wish." The proving of things not seen (pragmaton elegchos ou blepomenon). The only N.T. example of elegchos (except Textus Receptus in 2 Tim. 3:16 for elegmon). Old and common word from elegcho (Matthew 18:15) for "proof" and then for "conviction." Both uses occur in the papyri and either makes sense here, perhaps "conviction" suiting better though not in the older Greek. —Word Pictures in the New Testament Faith is to believe what we do not see, and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe. - Augustine Hebrews 1:3 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, Hebrews 1:3 (ESV) Rend the very image (or impress) of his substance The primary sense of ὑπόστασις substance is something which stands underneath; foundation, ground of hope or confidence, and so assurance itself. In a philosophical sense, substantial nature; the real nature of anything which underlies and supports its outward form and properties. - Word Studies in the New Testament. 4 Otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—for being so confident. 2 Corinthians 9:4 (ESV) 17 What I am saying with this boastful confidence, I say not as the Lord would but as a fool. 2 Corinthians 11:17 (ESV) Hebrews 11:2 What is Faith? 1) Faith Is… Now faith is the title deed of things hoped for, proof of things which are not being seen. For by means of this [namely, faith] the elders had witness borne them. By means of faith we perceive that the material universe and the God-appointed ages of time were equipped and fitted by God's word for the purpose for which they were intended, and it follows therefore that which we see did not come into being out of which is visible. Famed atheist sees evidence for God, cites recent discoveries http://www.sbclife.net/article/1228/famed-atheist-sees-evidence-for-god Antony Flew, a legendary British philosopher and atheist, has changed his mind about the existence of God in light of recent scientific evidence. Flew -- a prolific author has argued against the existence of God and the claims of Christianity for more than 50 years. Flew said he is now best described as a deist -- a person who believes God created the universe but is not actively involved in people's lives today. "I don't believe in the God of any revelatory system, although I am open to that," Flew. But it seems to me that the case for ... [a] God who has the characteristics of power and also intelligence is now much stronger than it ever was before." Flew credits his newfound belief in God to arguments from design such as those espoused by the "intelligent design" (ID) movement. "I think that the most impressive arguments for God's existence are those that are supported by recent scientific discoveries," Flew said. "... I think the argument to Intelligent Design is enormously stronger than it was when I first met it." Although many atheists appeal to naturalistic evolution as a method by which the world could have come into existence apart from God, Charles Darwin himself acknowledged that the process of evolution requires a creator to start the process, Flew said. "Darwin himself, in the fourteenth chapter of The Origin of Species, pointed out that his whole argument began with a being which already possessed reproductive powers," Flew said. "This is the creature the evolution of which a truly comprehensive theory of evolution must give some account. Darwin himself was well aware that he had not produced such an account." While Flew said he does not believe in a God who is active in the lives of humans, he is "open to" the possibility of divine revelation. He also believes that Christians are intellectually justified in holding to their religion and that the resurrection of Jesus has more evidential support than any other reported miracle in history. "The evidence for the resurrection is better than that for claimed miracles in any other religion," Flew said. "It's outstandingly different in quality and quantity, I think, from the evidence offered for the occurrence of most other supposedly miraculous events." Despite his belief in the existence of God, Flew said it is unlikely that he will ever become a Christian. The major evidence against the God of Christianity is the problem of evil, Flew said. "The problem of evil is a problem ... for Christians," Flew said. "The thesis that the universe was created and is sustained by a Being of infinite power and goodness is flatly incompatible with the occurrence of massive undeniable and undenied evils in that universe." Flew also argues that God does not have "any preferences ... about or any intentions concerning human behavior or about the eternal destinies of human beings." WHERE DOES FAITH COME FROM? Does God give it to us as a gift, are we unable to believe without this gift? Or is belief in Christ a choice, aided by the Holy Spirit's ministry but never-the-less my choice? Some use this passage to teach faith comes from God. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Ephesians 2:4-9 (ESV) And that (kai touto). Neuter, not feminine tautē, and so refers not to pistis (feminine) or to charis (feminine also), but to the act of being saved by grace conditioned on faith on our part. Paul shows that salvation does not have its source (ex humōn, out of you) in men, but from God. Besides, it is God's gift (dōron) and not the result of our work - Word Pictures in the New Testament. Not faith, but the salvation. - Word Studies in the New Testament. If “this” refers to faith then Paul is also saying faith is by grace and not by works so no one can boast. NOT that Salvation is by grace so that no one can boast. You CAN'T have it both ways, it must refer to one or the other. How could God command people to believe if they are unable to do it?
Ever made a decision based on how you felt? In this week's latest addition to the Adulting series, “In my Feelings”, Pastor Jeremy Johnson preaches on the connection between our emotions, the flesh and the spirit within. God doesn’t just bring the dead to life, when you receive Jesus, his spirit then lives within you in exchange for your sin. But no life grows without challenges and in those pits it’s easy to let our emotions take over. Emotions are inherently fickle, changing from one moment to the next. If we wait till we “feel” like following Jesus, how might we be delaying the God call on our lives? Why make life changing decisions based on fickle feelings? God is with you always! Inside the body lies the spirit, a direct connection to God at all times. Getting into relationship with Jesus allows this spirit to mature and become in control of our emotions. Our decision to trust in Gods truth through the living word give us guidance through our spirit to live out our purpose. Develop a relationship with God and watch your spirit take hold of unruly emotions bringing forth a bounty of blessings! OWNING OUR WEAKNESS 2 CORITHIANS 12:8-10 & HEBREWS 5:1-10 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 [8] Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. [9] But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. [10] For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong. (ESV) HEBREWS 5:1-10 [5:1] For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. [2] He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. [3] Because of this he is obligated to offer sacrifice for his own sins just as he does for those of the people. [4] And no one takes this honor for himself, but only when called by God, just as Aaron was. [5] So also Christ did not exalt himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed by him who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”; [6] as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” [7] In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. [8] Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. [9] And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, [10] being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek. SERMON NOTES I. https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Hebrews+2%3A10-18&version=ESV (Hebrews 2:10-18) Merry Christmas. I hope you have a happy new year. I've never been sure of what to preach at this particular time of the year – Christmas and New Year's. It would be easy, I suppose, for me to load a bunch of New Year's spiritual resolutions on you but that isn't really Good News to build a life upon. It can come off sounding more like Law than Good News. We could celebrate, the blessings and challenges of the past year, but that would be somewhat like a Thanksgiving message. So instead, I thought maybe now that the emotional part of the Christmas experience is behind us, why not take one last look at the question we have been focusing upon during the weeks leading up to Christmas: What child is this whose birth we just celebrated? The writer of the letter to the Hebrews has a very insightful and encouraging answer for us today. Like news magazines and television shows that use collages and images to remind people of things that have taken place, the book of Hebrews offers a collage of images to help us understand this child named Jesus. The first picture that jumps out at us is, He's our brother! Listen to this verse, “For the one who sanctifies (cleanses from sin) and those who are sanctified all have one Father. For this reason, Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.” Jesus is our brother. He became one of us. He is true God, but He's also true man. He identified Himself with us. As I look at this verse, I finally understand the third verse of “O Holy Night” when it says, “Chains shall he break for the slave is our brother, and in his name all oppression shall cease.” I've never been comfortable singing the line of “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee,” that goes, “God our Father, Christ our brother . . .” Jesus the Son of God, according to this passage in Hebrews, entered our humanity. He became our brother. He partook of our flesh and blood by becoming one of us. He went through everything we go through. He experienced what we experience in life – even such things as pain, hunger, thirst, tears, loneliness, weariness, disappointments, and temptations. He chose to do life His way – His heavenly Father's way – instead. Max Lucado wrote a book a few years ago called God Came Near. I like this reflection he used in the book when thinking about Christ's incarnation: “The phrase ‘I've been there,' is in the chorus of Christ's theme song. To the lonely, Jesus whispers ‘I've been there.' To the discouraged, Christ nods His head and sighs, ‘I've been there.' He entered into every detail of human life. “Are you poor? Jesus knows how you feel. Are you at the lowest rung of the social ladder? He understands. Ever been taken advantage of? Christ says, ‘I've been there, too.' Have you ever felt like you needed to get away from the pressures and demands? Jesus says, “I've been there.” Family tensions? ‘Yes, I've been there too.' Falsely accused? ‘Absolutely!' The list goes on. ‘I've been there,' Jesus says. Whatever you are facing, Jesus knows how you feel.” I find comfort in the thought that Jesus knows how I feel. He has walked a mile in my shoes. He empathizes with us. When I turn to Him, He understands. This passage tells us that He is like an older brother who doesn't look down on us or tell us to get lost. Instead, He comes to help us. I'm reminded of a very popular movie from a few years ago entitled “A River Runs Through It.” It's a true story about two brothers growing up in the beautiful mountains of Montana. The older brother was quiet, studious, and hard-working. He went off to college, got a good job, and was respected in his community. The younger brother was great fun, always in trouble, pushing the envelope on what was acceptable. He had a drinking problem, as well as a gambling problem, and he ended up associating with some guys who got him deeper and deeper into trouble. Finally,...
