May CPI I would say I was very optimistic after the May Consumer Price Index (CPI) was released. Headline CPI increased 3.3% compared to last year, which was below the estimate and last month's reading which both stood at 3.4%. Core CPI which excludes food and energy was up 3.4%, which was below the estimate of 3.5% and last month's reading of 3.6%. This also marked the lowest reading since April 2021 when inflation concerns really began and the core CPI was at 3.0%. In March 2021 core CPI was at 1.6%. The shelter index continues to be the heavyweight moving core CPI as it was up 5.4% over last year and accounted for over two thirds of the annual increase. Many areas of the report have come back down to more normal inflation rates with areas like food at home increasing just 1% compared to last year. Food away from home was a little more challenged as that was up 4% compared to last year. I believe much of this can be attributed to the continued demand for bars and restaurants and the increased wage pressures. Although energy saw a 2% decline compared to the previous month, it was 3.7% higher than last year. This stems from the major fall in energy prices last year that I believe will make for difficult comparisons over the next few months. Two major areas that have remained problematic include admission to sporting events, which saw an increase of 21.7% compared to last year and motor vehicle insurance, which saw an increase of 20.3% compared to last year. It was positive to see a monthly decline in motor vehicle insurance of 0.1%. I believe this category will not be a problem in 2025 as much of the rate increases have now taken place. Overall, I believe this report should be supportive of a rate cut, but we will need to see more reports like this with further progress in the coming months for a cut to actually occur.  May PPI After a positive Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Producer Price Index (PPI) delivered more welcome news on the inflation front. May headline PPI rose 2.2% compared to last year and when comparing against the month of April there was a decline of 0.2%. Estimates were looking for a 2.5% increase in the annual number and a 0.1% increase in the monthly figure. When looking at core PPI, which excludes food and energy, the report showed and increase of just 2.3% on annual basis which was below the expectation for a 2.5% increase. These numbers are right around the Fed's 2% target and should be a positive indicator for CPI and PCE as we continue to move forward.  Private Investment Deals Investors be aware that your local broker could start hitting you up for private investment deals to fund apartment complexes somewhere around the country. The problem is the banks are starting to clamp down on just loaning money for projects on apartments that may be losers. In 2023 almost 500,000 new apartments were opened which is the most since the 80s. That growth is expected to continue and it's estimated to be around the same number in 2024. We have said before this will help bring down housing costs probably by 2025 as there are so many apartments on the market that the owners will give so many free incentives and reduce the rents just to get people in and provide the owners some cash flow. This will affect the housing market along with the CPI since shelter costs are a big part of that index and lower rents would help reduce the inflation numbers.  Apple Stock I was surprised to see Apple move more than 7% higher a day after the developer conference on Monday and close at a record high. There was a lot of hype leading up to the event as the company was anticipated to detail more about its AI strategy. I'm not sure if I saw the same conference, but I was not overly impressed by the details. Apple launched Apple Intelligence which can proofread your writing, or even rewrite it in a friendly or professional tone. It can create custom emojis called “genmoji,” search through your iPhone for specific messages from someone, summarize and transcribe phone calls or show you priority notifications. It can even tap into OpenAI's ChatGPT to provide you more detailed answers from Siri. ChatGPT is also built into systemwide writing tools. So, for example, Apple said you can create a bedtime story for a child and add images created by ChatGPT. Since the updates will only take place on the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and newly built phones, the hope is there will be a major upgrade cycle. Personally, I just don't see how these updates will get many people to move and buy a phone that will cost at least $1,000. I know new emojis is definitely not enough for me to upgrade. I also do worry about how this will impact the relationship with Google. Alphabet currently pays Apple around $20 B per year to be the default search engine on Apple devices. If more people begin to use the AI function and do less search, why would Alphabet continue to pay such a hefty fee? For a stock trading at close to 30x this year's projected earnings, there is now a lot riding on this next iPhone cycle.  What should you do with your Annuity? It is very rare that I come across someone who fully understands their annuity. Annuities can be either qualified or non-qualified and their status will determine how they are taxed. A qualified annuity means it was purchased with retirement funds while a non-qualified annuity was purchased with non-retirement funds. Generally qualified annuities are more flexible because they can be surrendered and rolled into another IRA without tax. However, if non-qualified annuities are surrendered, the entire gain becomes taxable at ordinary income rates. Because of this sometimes (but not always) it can make more sense to annuitize non-qualified annuities which is the process of converting the funds into a pension-like stream of income. This is still taxable, but the gain is spread out over time rather than realized in one year. I recently spoke with someone who is close to 80 years old and owns a non-qualified annuity. It turns out their annuity has two annuitization options. They can either withdraw 5% of the account value for the rest of their life, or they can withdraw 7% of the account value until the account value has been reached, but would also stop upon death. The issue here is in both of these cases, there is a decent chance they will not live long enough to get all their money back, let alone any growth. Another option would be to surrender the annuity to guarantee they receive all their funds back, but then they would pay a decent chunk of it in taxes. This is one example of many that illustrate if you have an annuity, make sure you also know when and how to use it because waiting will limit your options.   Stocks Discussed: Docusign (DOCU), Ferrari (RACE) and Southwest (LUV)

Tesla electric cars with BYD batteries are already in the “C-sample test phase”.   - The rumours come from the portal cls.cn, which refers to information from the Financial Associated Press.   - BYD will “supply Tesla with blade batteries in the second quarter of next year”. BYD would not comment on the information to the portal.   - Tesla relies on LFP cells from CATL for the standard range versions of the Model 3 and Model Y produced in China.   - Either Tesla wants to test and establish an alternative supplier for the standard range models here, or it could be the planned new entry-level model. This model, preemptively called the ‘Model 2', is being developed in China   - BYD uses the Blade battery in its Han EV electric sedan and Tang EV electric SUV, among others – but it was announced from the start that external customers would also be supplied.   - According to PushEVs, BYD is supposed to achieve 140 Wh/kg at pack level. With the LFP cells that CATL supplies to Tesla, on the other hand, only 125 Wh/kg are said to be possible. At cell level, the blade batteries, which have been given this name because of their unusually large and long cells, achieve up to 166 Wh/kg. The cells are 905 millimetres long, 118 millimetres high and 13.5 millimetres wide.   Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2021/08/06/tesla-may-begin-sourcing-batteries-from-byd/   THE GENESIS GV60 BEFORE YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SEE IT   - Genesis will launch the third fully-electric model based on Hyundai's new E-GMP platform. Expected to be called the Genesis GV60, the vehicle will be e a more luxurious alternative to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6, and based on this photo, it's also going to be a bit more conventional looking too.   - The rear end of the GV60 has the same fastback look as the EV6 and it also has an interesting detail in the C-pillar. It looks like the chrome trim that follows the upper part of the side glass dips and makes a V shape behind the rear door - this is quite an unusual detail and it looks like the inside of the V will be black to make it seem part of the rear glass.   Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/524054/genesis-gv60-spied-fully-uncovered   ARRIVAL VAN COMPLETES FIRST AUTONOMOUS RIDE   - EV startup Arrival has shared news that its electric van has completed a demonstration at a fully functioning parcel depot without a driver inside. This is the first time the Arrival Van has completed an autonomous drive of this kind, which now paves the way for road testing.   - Last month, Arrival received an order for five of its electrified Arrival Buses from the City of Anaheim, California, which followed the company's news in May that it had partnered with Uber to design an Arrival Car specifically for rideshare drivers.   - Arrival shared news of a successful live demonstration of its ADS within an Arrival Van at a fully functional parcel depot in the UK. The Arrival Van successfully completed all operations a commercial fleet driver would perform on an average day, but did so autonomously.   - Max Kumskoy, Arrival's head of advanced driver assistance and automated driving systems, elaborates:   At Arrival, we are building supplementary technologies that will help drivers. Depot maneuvers are the most accident-prone parts of a worker's shift and with our technology, we hope to introduce greater safety by removing human driving errors happening in confined environments. We are starting with a fixed controlled environment in the depot, where we are truly able to test and validate our technology. We can then understand how it will operate on public roads, in our vehicles, and how it can be implemented worldwide.   Original Source : https://electrek.co/2021/08/02/arrival-van-completes-first-autonomous-ride-without-driver-road-tests-to-follow/   FERRARI BOSS HAS NO FEARS OVER ELECTRIC FUTURE   - Ferrari (RACE.MI), the sports car maker synonymous with roaring petrol engines, welcomes the shift to electric powertrains and is confident of retaining its lead in the market for high performance cars, its chairman said on Monday.   - European Union last month proposed an effective ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035 as part of its measures to combat global warming, posing a challenge to automakers that have made powerful engines a key selling point.   - Ferrari Chairman and acting CEO John Elkann told analysts on Monday the company known for its 'Prancing Horse' logo saw the change in technology as an opportunity.   - Ferrari has pledged to launch its first all-electric car in 2025.   Original Source : https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/luxury-carmaker-ferrari-sticks-main-outlook-after-strong-q2-2021-08-02/   FIRESTONE BREAKS GROUND ON PROJECT TIED TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES   - A global auto parts supplier has broken ground on a $51 million project adding 250 jobs at a rural Kentucky plant in an expansion tied to auto industry plans to ramp up electric vehicle production. Welcome to Episode #47 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by David Bartosiak, editor of the Home Run Investor and the Momentum Trader, to discuss two of David’s favorite topics: cars and sneakers. The collectible market for both has been on fire for the last 5 years, with prices and sales hitting new highs. But have things gotten too bubblicious? Classic Car Prices Soar In the classic car market, the upper end of sales is still humming along. At the recent Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in California, which has been selling classic cars since 1950, a 1955 Jaguar D-Type Roadster sold for $21.8 million. It was the most expensive British car to ever sell at auction. 7 other cars also sold at auction for over $10 million. But in the lower collectible range, sales have slowed. Some market players say buyers are spooked by the upcoming US election uncertainty and the growing worries over the global economy. As a stock investor, how do you play the classic car craze? Sotheby’s (BID) has been involved in car auctions for decades. Meanwhile, Ferrari (RACE) now trades publicly on the exchange. Ferraris make up the bulk of the most expensive car sales ever. 9 out of the 10 highest prices ever paid for an automobile have been Ferraris. Additionally, it’s easier than ever to check the prices on these rare car offerings. Both TrueCar and Amazon Vehicles (AMZN) have websites that will allow you to track prices and provide specs and videos. Everyone Is Re-Selling Sneakers: Uh-oh Rare sneakers are nothing new. Jordans have been around for over 30 years. But there has been an explosion in new websites selling sneakers online from the Eminem-backed StockX in Detroit, which launched in February 2016, to GOAT out of Venice, California which lets you sell your sneakers via their app. Tracey and David discuss the speculation in the sneaker market. Recently Adidas’ Yeezy 350 for infants sold out and they are now being re-sold on the various sneaker websites. It all seems so easy to make money. Is the sneaker market flashing a danger sign? If you want to invest in sneakers, the main players remain the same as always: Adidas (ADDYY), which is expected to grow its earnings by 30% this year, and Nike (NKE), forecast to increase earnings by another 10.8% this fiscal year. Under Armour isn’t a player in the sneaker collectible market yet because it’s too new. Want to know more about the entire sneaker market and how to invest in it? Tracey and Dave covered this in a previous podcast, including digging into Under Armour and Skechers. Check it out below. Are collectible cars and sneakers in a bubble? Tune into this week’s podcast to find out.
