She spent the last twelve years in New York City working commercially and recently returned home to Austin, to pursue a graduate degree from the University of Texas. This transition has become a catalyst for her most recent ruminations on the concepts of home, family, and identity. Working primarily with photography, text, and sound, Gomez's practice examines our notions of the ‘home' as a myth through reflections on her parent's relationship to the land. Her interest lies in the meeting of this trinity of images, text, and sound and how the three can work together as a spiritual triad to create an experiential memory-scape of place.Gomez has exhibited both in the U.S. and internationally most recently showing at Women and Their Work as a Red Dot Artist in Austin, TX, sTudio 7 for the Rockaway Artists' Alliance in Fort Tilden, NY, and for The Print Space Gallery in London, UK. Recent awards include a 2024 University Residency Fellowship from Studios at MASS MoCA, and she was honored to be mentioned as a photographer to watch in Glass Tire's Best of 2022. Her work has appeared online and in publications such as The New York Times Opinion, Lux Magazine, PhMuseum, Booooooom, and Ain't Bad.Co-Lab Projects is a legendary art space whose current configuration is a 40 x 10 x 10-foot concrete culvert sitting on an open plot of land just east of the city. WABC Host Anthony Weiner joins Sid in-studio to discuss City Hall and Albany's initiative to move migrants into Floyd Bennett Field and Fort Tilden. Weiner makes the point that it's actually illegal on paper to just start moving migrants into a National park like Floyd Bennett Field. It can't be done with just the stroke of a pen, which is apparently what Governor Kathy Hochul has done. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Decades Of Alzheimer's Research Could Be Based On Fraudulent Data Alzheimer's disease is a devastating brain disorder that slowly affects memory and thinking skills. For many people who worry that loved ones may succumb to this disorder, the possibility of research in the field of Alzheimer's is a balm of hope. However, a massive report from Science Magazine highlights a startling discovery: that decades of Alzheimer's research are likely based on faulty data. Alzheimer's researchers are grappling with the revelation, and what it means for future research of the disease. In other science news of the week, scientists have identified pits on the moon that are a comfortable temperature: averaging 63 degrees Fahrenheit. But don't plan that space vacation yet—research finds that air pollution from space-bound rockets has an exorbitantly high effect on global warming—much more than traditional airplane travel. Joining guest host Sophie Bushwick to discuss these stories is Maggie Koerth, science writer for FiveThirtyEight based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They also discuss how childhood vaccinations have dropped dramatically during the COVID pandemic, and why this is likely tied to New York's first Polio case in nearly a decade. Higher Temperatures Are Bad For The Body Across the globe, hundreds of millions of people have been dealing with extreme heat. The three most populated countries in the world—China, India and the United States—have been gripped by heat waves throughout the summer. Extreme heat isn't just uncomfortable: it can be deadly, putting strain on the organs and systems that keep us in equilibrium. Heat is especially dangerous for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, pregnant people, and those without access to air conditioning. In the United States, heat is responsible for more deaths than any other type of weather event. Joining guest host Sophie Bushwick to talk about what high temperatures do to the body, and how we can protect our health and safety in a heat wave is Chris Uejio, associate professor of public health at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Protecting Piping Plovers Isn't A Walk On The Beach July is nearly through, and so is the piping plover's nesting season. It's make-or-break time for these small, endangered shorebirds. There are roughly 8,000 piping plovers in the entire world. To put that in context, birders often get really excited to see a rare bird like a snowy owl. But there are about 28,000 snowy owls in the world, three times the number of piping plovers. Since piping plovers make their nests along the water and out in the open, their chicks are very vulnerable to being gobbled up by predators. And a major reason for their decline in numbers is human development along the beaches, lakes, and rivers where piping plovers lay their eggs. SciFri radio producer Shoshannah Buxbaum went out to Fort Tilden in Queens, NY to report on a volunteer-run conservation effort along the New York City coastline. And later in the segment, Michigan radio reporter Lester Graham talks with guest host Sophie Bushwick about the unique challenges and triumphs of the piping plovers who nest along the Great Lakes. This Glove Takes Inspiration From An Octopus' Arm Octopuses have more than 2,000 suckers on eight arms, and each one is controlled individually, making these critters incredibly dextrous. So when a team of researchers wondered how to design a glove that could hold onto slippery objects underwater, they turned to octopuses for inspiration. Ultimately, they created something they're calling an octa-glove. Guest host Sophie Bushwick talks with Michael Bartlett, an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Virginia Tech, about his team's engineering, and what they learned from the ambidextrous creatures. Transcripts for each segment will be available the week after the show airs on sciencefriday.com.

Coming off a traumatic year of increased anti-Asian hate and a seemingly never-ending pandemic, The Cosmos' co-founders Cassandra and Karen decided to create "Camp Cosmos." The intention was to facilitate safe spaces where Asian women could experience joy, community, and healing in nature. Over the course of a month, Camp Cosmos participants went hiking, kayaking, and finally, camping. This episode highlights excerpts from their camping trip to Camp Rockaway at Fort Tilden, or Munsee Lenape lands. This episode is made in partnership with Merrell and supported in part by Endel. Featured in this episode: Cassandra and Karen from The Cosmos, a home for Asian women to care for themselves, their community, their world. Another double guest balcony session with the incredibly talented and dynamic co-creators of "Search Party," Sarah-Violet Bliss & Charles Rogers. Rick invites them over to discuss how creating and running your own show compares to working on established projects, like the "Wet Hot American Summer" television series. They discuss their first official project together, "Fort Tilden," debuting at the SXSW film festival where is ALSO won that year's Grand Jury Award, then creating the critically acclaimed (then TBS) HBO Max series, "Search Party." They deep dive into all things creative process and career highlights as well as how they work seamlessly together. Weathering the outside elements of the balcony like consummate performers, they contend with wildfire ash, poop raining down, as well as some pretty great pyrotechnics. Lots of great advice and insight into being young writers, the path to success, and the culture of writing-rooms (aka boys club culture). A great episode for some inside-baseball style info for those wondering about or wanting to join the entertainment business. Daniel Arnold, is a world-renowned NYC street photographer who has been hailed by Gawker as ‘The best photographer on Instagram,’ by Wired as ‘Instagram’s ultimate street photographer,’ the New Yorker turned over their Instagram feed to Daniel for a week to document activity on the NYC subways, and his work is regularly featured in Vogue as well as The New York Times, just to name a few of his accolades. And in the interest of full disclosure...Daniel also happens to be my cousin. In this marathon conversation Daniel and I take a deep, candid, and unfiltered look at the creative process. We leave no stone unturned and share both of our very honest experiences with both the amazing (i.e. manic) sides of creativity...and we also aren’t afraid to talk about our numerous personal experiences with depression and burnout. I thought this article would be both helpful and timely given that October 7th is the beginning of Mental Illness Awareness Week. If you are dealing with mental health issues, whether or not you work in a creative field like us, know that you are not alone. If you’ve ever felt like your creativity is a calling, a part of your identity, or something you simply must get out of your system in order to feel alive or be considered a productive member of society, you don’t want to miss this conversation. And as soon as you’re done listening (or even while you’re listening), do yourself a favor and look up Daniel’s Instagram page. His photos will literally blow your mind. And I’m not saying that because he’s my cousin....his 200 thousands followers definitely agree with me. Guest Bio: Facebook|Twitter|Instagram Daniel Arnold could be the William Eggleston of Instagram. Using his iPhone (along with a Contax G2 and Yashica T5), he captures the daily rhythms of New York street life in moments of both high drama and sublime banality. When he needed extra cash in March (“I had 40 bucks in my bank account and 10 grand of credit card debt,” he said), Mr. Arnold told his Instagram followers that he would sell 4-by-6 prints of his photographs for $150 each. By day’s end, he was $15,000 richer. In 2012, the gossip website Gawker published an article about how Mr. Arnold had been censored: He had posted a cheeky but artfully composed photo of two topless sunbathers at Fort Tilden beach. Though he had only 1,500 followers at the time, Gawker called his Instagram feed a “stream of brilliantly voyeuristic snapshots of New York City streets.” Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared and published by Elyse Rintelman. Also, Will discusses the screenwriting book "Beat by Beat" and Anthony discusses the book "Everything Was Possible" which is an actor's diary of the production of "Follies" by Stephen Sondheim.

Josh & Rob Michael Hugel ("I Hate Being Single") discuss his hit web series, 90's Fox shows, and his cameo in Fort Tilden! This episode brought to you by Blue Apron!
Make sure your smartphone is charged and your romper is just wrinkled enough to say you don't care, and come watch 'Fort Tilden', the new indie comedy that savages twenty-something hipster culture in NYC. Allie and Harper are roommates, and as a result, constant companions. They harbor a lot of resentment for each other and when they both meet a cute boy at a rooftop party, they find themselves crusing for the same catch. A date is set at Fort Tilden the following day for the three of them (plus one wingman) to get together. But getting there from Williamsburg proves to a hellish journey, literally and existentially. These two spoiled girls are not the most likable bunch (Andrew hated them) but they are treated affectionately by the filmmakers (Phil enjoyed watching them). If you see this film, you can tell people it's one of your favorites...but they've probably never heard of it... On top of the news about Danny Boyle confirming production will begin on Trainspotting 2, there are two new release films reviewed by the team this week; Nima Nourizadeh's stoner comedy American Ultra, starring Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart, and the Statham-less Statham-vehicle Transp4ter (...no? AKA The Transporter Refueled.) As well as the new releases, Owen discusses the documentary Welcome to Leith (which is screening this week at the Cambridge Film Festival) with Paul, who also reviews Fort Tilden. Phil rewatches a recent favourite in The Adjustment Bureau and Steve follows up on a discussion from last week's FrightFest summary by checking out Australian pre-post-apocalyptic thriller These Final Hours. We review indie comedy Fort Tilden, Guy Ritchie’s spy drama The Man from U.N.C.L.E. and the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton. Fort Tilden won the Grand Jury prize at SXSW and there’s a reason for that. It’s hilarious and a great commentary on the whole hipster/bohemian/millenial thing. Two girls living in Brooklyn try to take a … Continue reading Episode 12 – Straight Outta U.N.C.L.E. →

Whoa! It's already St. Patrick's Day weekend - Christian and Shonali have way too much to catch up on. We talk Riverdance, Bronies, and walking strategies for New Yorkers. Shonali is dissed by her dad. Christian is in a TMZ phase. Shonali bombed an audition and Christian booked his. We share diatribes on hipster diatribes. Our special guest this episode is comedienne and actress Bridey Elliott. She just returned from Austin, where the film in which she co-stars, Fort Tilden, just won the Grand Jury Prize at SXSW. We talk animal handling, teen age angst, and growing up in a comedy family. Her father is Chris Elliott, sister is Abby Elliott, and grandfather is Bob Elliott. We also talk boyfriends, strategies for avoiding getting raped, Siri and butt dialing. In addition to acting, Bridey does stand up and is also performing in Absolutely, her Maude Night improv group at the UCB Theatre. We had so much fun having Bridey as our guest. You will hear Shonali laughing the ENTIRE episode. GAWSH! Our Episode 22 song is Sunshine Love by Rikki Ililonga.
