Cohen Crispin is the QRL Sport science coordinator and former strength and conditioning coach within Surfing Australia's high-performance program. Cohen is an ASCA Elite L3 elite coach and holds a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. In addition to his commitments in surfing, Cohen is also an assistant strength and conditioning coach and sports scientist for the Queensland women's State of Origin team. With a multifaceted background, Cohen is dedicated to optimising athlete performance and giving back to the S&C industry. QUOTES “My footy coach at the time, Frank Baker, was Dan Baker's brother and he was talking to me one afternoon about what I wanted to do after school and he started telling me about what his brother did, working at the Broncos, strength and power coach. And I was like, is this a job?!” “So when I started at sprint kayaking, Worko gave me the opportunity to write a program for Kenny Wallace. And I remember I spent all night and I was reading all the research and then I've delivered it to him and he's gone, no, I don't do those exercises. So I've walked away from it, just defeated! And Worko has gone to me, did you talk to him before you wrote that program or did you just go to the theory? So that was a perfect lens for why the practical experience was so important.” “So it really makes our job about the need for engagement with the athletes. Engagement's our biggest currency and that engagement allows us to educate them and then a lot of our job is educating and giving these athletes all the tools that they need to be successful wherever they are, whether they're local or they're on the other side of the world.” “I've found that athletes that are proficient in the counter movement jump, have the ability to generate more speed and are getting good scores in smaller waves” “Whenever I'm writing programs, I'm always thinking what's the best exercise for the athlete, or what's the exercise that I can easily implement into their travel program. So we'll have a Monday, Wednesday strength and power session planned at the gym but if that doesn't work out, they'll then go to their body weight sessions that could easily be done in a hotel room using their bags and bands.” SHOWNOTES 1) Cohen's journey from becoming a sparky in a small QLD mining town to a strength & conditioning coach for Surfing Australia 2) The balance between practical and theoretical experience in learning the S&C craft 3) Understanding surfing as a sport and the role strength & conditioning has to play in a surfers development 4) The nature of working with surfers and the industry and the importance of athlete engagement and education in surfing 5) The key strength & conditioning focuses for performance in surfing and how this may be manipulated based on different wave profiles 6) The importance of paddle speed and conditioning for surfers and key tests and test standards for surfing athletes 7) Why having a plan A, plan B and plan C in S&C programming is essential for surfers and the programming template at Surfing Australia PEOPLE MENTIONED Dan Baker Deb Savage John Mitchell Glen Workman Ken Wallace Nick Winkleman

Today is municipal election day in Boston, and voters have a number of decisions to make about who will represent them on City Council for the next two years. As we wait for votes to be counted, one thing is for certain: Councilor Frank Baker will not be returning to City Hall in January. Baker, who announced he would not be seeking reelection earlier this year, has held the District 3 seat for 12 years. He's known for being one of the few moderate voices on a majority left council, and for his work with constituents across his district, which includes parts of Dorchester, the South End and South Boston. WBUR Reporter Simón Rios joins The Common to take a look back at Frank Baker's career, and what his departure means for Boston City Council. His record of 50 years managing one team, and 53 years overall will most likely never be broken. Tom December 22, 1944 – Future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton is born in Miami, Florida. Rivaling Tom Seaver as the finest pitcher of the 1970s, Steve Carlton won the National League Cy Young Award in 1972 and 1977 before capturing another two trophies during the early portion of the ensuing decade. One of the greatest left-handed hurlers in the history of the game, Carlton trails only Warren Spahn in victories for a southpaw, with 329.   He also ranks fourth on the all-time strikeout list with a total of 4,136. The first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards, Lefty, as he came to be known, surpassed 20 victories on six separate occasions, winning at least 16 games another four times. Over an 18-year stretch beginning in 1967, he failed to post at least 13 victories just once. During that same period, he also finished with an earned run average under 3.00 eight times, struck out more than 200 batters eight times, and threw at least 250 innings 13 times. Carlton remains the last National League pitcher to compile as many as 25 victories in a season, as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season.   December 22, 1980 — The Boston Red Sox mail Fred Lynn and Carlton Fisk their new contracts two days after the Basic Agreement's December 20 deadline. Boston's blunder makes their All-Stars eligible for free agency. Fisk will land in Chicago after a legal battle and complete a Hall of Fame career over the next decade plus. Lynn will end up traded to California with Rick Burleson, and play 11 more seasons. However, he will never have the impact he did in Boston.   This was a dark era in Boston, similar to recent times as they let a Hall of Fame player slip away, as well as trading away the soul of the team. It took several years for them to become competitive again, when Roger Clemens would arrive in the summer of 1984.     December 22, 1999 — In an interview in Sports Illustrated magazine, Atlanta Braves P John Rocker offends virtually every race and ethnic group in a hateful outburst. Community leaders, media, management, coaches, and teammates alike call for action to be taken against the lefthander, who had 38 saves for Atlanta this past season.   In a story published in the December 27, 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of allegations stemming from his experiences in New York City and answered a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets.   I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-wracking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut-next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing… The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?   During the interview, he also spoke of his opinion of the New York Mets and their fans:   Nowhere else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, “Hey, I did your mother last night—she's a whore.” I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right.   The interview was conducted while driving to a speaking engagement in Atlanta. The reporter, Jeff Pearlman, wrote that during the interview session, Rocker spat on a Georgia State Route 400 toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, Rocker referred to Curaçaoan teammate Randall Simon as a “fat monkey”.   Although Rocker later apologized after speaking with Braves legend and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and former Atlanta mayor and congressman Andrew Young, he continued to make controversial remarks. For his comments, Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rocker without pay for the remainder of spring training and the first 28 games of the 2000 season, which on appeal was reduced to 14 games (without a spring-training suspension).   December 22, 1953 –Jack Dunn III officially turns over the name “Orioles” to the St. Louis Browns, who recently were acquired in November 1953 by a syndicate of Baltimore business and civic interests led by attorney and civic activist Clarence Miles and Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr.   His family had successfully operated the International League Orioles franchise for years in Baltimore, Maryland. The original Orioles, an AL charter member franchise eventually moved to New York in 1903 to eventually become the Highlanders, and then the Yankees.    The move to Baltimore was ushered in with the arrival of Brooks Robinson in 1955. They experienced their greatest success from 1966 to 1983, when they made six World Series appearances, winning three of them (1966, 1970, 1983). This era of the club featured many future Hall of Famers who would later be inducted representing the Orioles, such as third baseman Brooks Robinson, outfielder Frank Robinson, starting pitcher Jim Palmer, first baseman Eddie Murray, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., and manager Earl Weaver.

From Pastor Dave: his summer my devotions have featured Charles Wesley the poet. It has been noted that Charles wrote around 9,000 poems containing nearly 180,000 lines. Yes, some of these became hymns but the vast majority were never put to music or meant to be sung. Charles Wesley understandably is recognized as one of the great hymnists, but seldom is he included among the great English poets. Frank Baker, Professor of English Church History at Duke Divinity School is quick to point out the gifts and skills of Wesley, and the eloquence of his poetry. He cites that the vast volume of Charles work means that he on occasion pens only average verses .For example Charles might pen as many as thirty verses for a hymn or poem which John would edit down to four to six verses to be published. Baker notes the many times where Charles displays sheer inspiration, as in the case of “Father of Everlasting Grace”

In this week's episode of Psychologize U we invite psychologist Kalynda Smith on the podcast to discuss the challenges of being a black woman in high-performing fields. This discussion was inspired by the mental health needs of Simone Biles, who took a break from the 2021 Olympics. We discussed how it can be challenging to protect an African American identity in the workplace, and how important it is to understand ourselves when trying to traverse the world in black skin. Let it be is all I could say as this period of unintentional pausing has made all of us pay attention. Going out into the garden every day to weed or water was less important. Admiring the beauty of the garden in real-time was a gift. The opportunity to witness trees burst into bloom or plants come to life has been amazing. If it were any other year, I would have to make time to weed, make time to capture a few blooms and have very little time actually enjoying the beauty that surrounds me. I wrote about this on my blog recently as I realized sometimes, you have to Let It Be I recently heard Edwina Von Gal speak about the virtues of nature on a fantastic webinar shared by The Garden Conservancy. With her debut album "Quite Frankley" we welcome NINA BAKER! Influenced by the smooth tones of Ella Fitzgerald & Nina Simone, the technical brilliance of Lang-Lang and the creativity of Tori Amos, Kate Bush and Amy Winehouse, Nina Baker is a fusion of blues, pop, skiffle, rock, folk, jazz, country and classical music all interwoven with hallmark piano riffs, emotive lyrics and a unique vocal quality. Nina was hand-picked by BBC Introducing to attend their 2013 Master Class and came runner-up in MTV's Brand New for 2013 unsigned competition, beating over 500 acts to reach the final and impressing the MTV select panel who stated that "Nina brought something really unique to the competition, a mixture of light and dark makes her songs stand out”. The core of the album was recorded at Rockfield Studios in Monmouth, under the stewardship of Nick Brine (The Darkness, Stone Roses, Bruce Springsteen). Sessions at Red Kite Studios in Llandovery with Martin Levan (Iron Maiden, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, Sarah Brightman), brass composer Andrew Griffiths in Swansea and with the Ebbw Vale Male Voice Choir only adds to the heavy Welsh influence. The other side of the album is distinctly a London affair. From The Kings Gospel Choir to the inspirational John Themis (Boy George, Kylie Minogue, Stevie Wonder, Sir Elton John) to string arrangements by Andy Bell and Sam Sweeney, the album will be one of the last made at The Church Studios in Crouch End. Mixed by Tristan Ivemy (Frank Turner, The Holloways, Billy Lockett) and mastered by Frank Arkwright at Abbey Road Studios, the album titled “Quite Frankly” (dedicated to her late grandfather Frank Baker) is a big-scale, uncompromising production. CD is due for digital release on 6th January 2014.   www.ninabakermusic.co.uk www.northwestprime.com "LIKE US ON FACEBOOK"
