In this inspiring episode of the Good Humans Podcast, I'm joined by the incredible Kate Wilcomes – former World Tour surfer, Teahupo'o champion, Blue Crush stunt double, and now National High Performance Director at Surfing Australia.Kate's journey through the surf world is packed with grit, passion, and pioneering moments. We chat about:
Cohen Crispin is the QRL Sport science coordinator and former strength and conditioning coach within Surfing Australia's high-performance program. Cohen is an ASCA Elite L3 elite coach and holds a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science. In addition to his commitments in surfing, Cohen is also an assistant strength and conditioning coach and sports scientist for the Queensland women's State of Origin team. With a multifaceted background, Cohen is dedicated to optimising athlete performance and giving back to the S&C industry. QUOTES “My footy coach at the time, Frank Baker, was Dan Baker's brother and he was talking to me one afternoon about what I wanted to do after school and he started telling me about what his brother did, working at the Broncos, strength and power coach. And I was like, is this a job?!” “So when I started at sprint kayaking, Worko gave me the opportunity to write a program for Kenny Wallace. And I remember I spent all night and I was reading all the research and then I've delivered it to him and he's gone, no, I don't do those exercises. So I've walked away from it, just defeated! And Worko has gone to me, did you talk to him before you wrote that program or did you just go to the theory? So that was a perfect lens for why the practical experience was so important.” “So it really makes our job about the need for engagement with the athletes. Engagement's our biggest currency and that engagement allows us to educate them and then a lot of our job is educating and giving these athletes all the tools that they need to be successful wherever they are, whether they're local or they're on the other side of the world.” “I've found that athletes that are proficient in the counter movement jump, have the ability to generate more speed and are getting good scores in smaller waves” “Whenever I'm writing programs, I'm always thinking what's the best exercise for the athlete, or what's the exercise that I can easily implement into their travel program. So we'll have a Monday, Wednesday strength and power session planned at the gym but if that doesn't work out, they'll then go to their body weight sessions that could easily be done in a hotel room using their bags and bands.” SHOWNOTES 1) Cohen's journey from becoming a sparky in a small QLD mining town to a strength & conditioning coach for Surfing Australia 2) The balance between practical and theoretical experience in learning the S&C craft 3) Understanding surfing as a sport and the role strength & conditioning has to play in a surfers development 4) The nature of working with surfers and the industry and the importance of athlete engagement and education in surfing 5) The key strength & conditioning focuses for performance in surfing and how this may be manipulated based on different wave profiles 6) The importance of paddle speed and conditioning for surfers and key tests and test standards for surfing athletes 7) Why having a plan A, plan B and plan C in S&C programming is essential for surfers and the programming template at Surfing Australia PEOPLE MENTIONED Dan Baker Deb Savage John Mitchell Glen Workman Ken Wallace Nick Winkleman
Paul is one of the nicest guys I have ever met and someone who I was lucky enough to work with for the last few years of my surf career being my physiotherapist. He grew up in Thirroul just south of Sydney with a massive love for sports. Join Timbo's Membership and take control of your marketing In her surfing career, Layne Beachley achieved this seven times, six of them consecutively, making her the best surfer the world has ever seen…. male or female. In this up close and personal one hour chat, Layne opens up about the one big shift she made in order to achieve her dreams. And fortunately, it's something we can all apply to both our own business and personal lives. Plus she shares a mountain of other amazing high-performance insights along the way. It's a fully-sick episode 634 of The (13 year-old, award-winning) Small Business Big Marketing podcast. A little more about World Surfing Champion Layne Beachley... Today you and I meet world #1 surfer Layne Beachley who's regarded as the most successful surfer ever! Layne's dedication to success saw her as the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles. She went on to win a seventh before retiring in 2008. In 2015 she was awarded the Order of Australia, the highest recognition one can receive for distinguished service of the highest degree to Australia or humanity at large. Amongst other endeavours, Layne is now Chairperson of Surfing Australia, and a motivational, keynote speaker sharing her stories about achieving success, overcoming challenges and maintaining a winning mindset. She's also the founder of the Awake Academy (use discount code Timbo for $100 off) which she describes as “a centre for self-empowerment, helping people detach from fear, take control and live a life they love.” Now I can hear some of you saying "But Timbo, this is a business and marketing podcast, what's with all the woo woo stuff?!” Well, you see, in my observations (and me included), there's too many business owners out there who find themselves losing motivation and direction in growing their beautiful businesses. This may show up as depression, anger, agitation, a lack of focus or in some other destructive way. But the reality is, before we're business owners, we're all human beings, and that, my friend, is a much tougher gig than running any business! BTW, if that's you right now, please take care, and don't be ashamed to chat with someone at your local crisis support service. For us Aussies, that Lifeline on 13 11 14. I started off by suggesting to Layne that there seems to be a consistent theme developing on this show, with past guest and another world #1 surfer Shaun Thomson going off and creating a personal development business. What is it about surfing that encourages this? Businesses that make this podcast possible - Please support them DELL Technologies - Small business IT solutions Book Tim Reid to speak or emcee at your next business event As always, thanks for your support. In today's episode, we are chatting with Layne Beachley. Layne's dedication to success made her the only surfer, male or female, to claim six consecutive world titles - and the only woman to have 7 in total. She is an officer of the order of Australia, Chair of Surfing Australia, and founder of the Awake Academy. In this chat Layne speaks openly about some experiences she faced as a child, like being conceived through assault and later adopted, that shaped her into the fierce competitor that we came to know. Layne is a powerhouse of what it means to be determined and driven. She is vivacious and cheeky. Layne and Gus share a passion for mental fitness and a big takeaway from this chat are the lessons that Layne has learnt about where we focus our own time and energy. Of course, this episode wouldn't be complete without talking about Layne's marriage with INXS member Kirk Pengilly. Without mentioning any spoilers, we'll tell you that it wasn't exactly love at first sight. As for all of these podcasts, Shaw and Partners have generously donated $10k to the charity of choice of each of our guests. In today's corporate culture, the ability for brand leaders to step-up and make an executive decision is virtually non-existent. Consensus-culture means brands are more interested in protecting fragile egos than rewarding true innovation. We're all too timid to take accountability and put our jobs on the line to make a big bet on something we believe in, which is why brands are failing and careers are stalling. During his 20 year career at Red Bull, our guest Chris Mater–current CEO of Surfing Australia–is an example of someone who was willing to put his job on the line over and over again to achieve extraordinary outcomes–and along the way, he and his team changed the world of sport and sports marketing forever.

At the age of 16 Layne Beachley became a professional surfer and went on to become the greatest surfer in history securing 7 world titles and has recently just won her 8th world Masters championship. But her success hasn’t come without hurdles. In our chat Layne shares how her first 6 world titles were won on fear, and her sweetest one was the 7th which she embraced the language of love, realised she was enough and gave up the struggle. Having losing her mum early in life, finding out she was adopted at the age of 8 years, and chronic fatigue later in life Layne has fought her was back to herself. Married to Kirk Pengilly from INXS fame, Layne lives a full life as a keynote speaker and currently serves as the chair of Surfing Australia. Layne is as down to earth as you’d expect and is the evidence of someone who challenges not only their external world, but her internal world on a daily basis seeking to live an unstoppable life. Maurice Cole is an Australia surfer, shaper and cultural icon – he was also our most popular and downloaded guest of 2017. Maurice recently wrote a somewhat controversial article on Beachgrit.com questioning the success of Surfing Australia in developing new world title contenders. Lipped caught up with Maurice to discuss his passion for Australian surfing and why his article was a call to arms rather than direct criticism. The conversation is made all the more interesting by Cahill’s role as high performance coach with Surfing Victoria and being part of a generation of surfers that was supported by brands rather than the government. We also chat big wave design and whether Maurice could or would build a quiver for a world title contender in 2018. Passionate, sometimes controversial and always entertaining – Maurice in full flight is a joy to behold! This episode will definitely kiss you where it feels good!
Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com Seven times ASP world champion, chair of Surfing Australia, ISA Executive Committee member, founder of the Layne Beachley Aim For The Stars Foundation, big wave pioneer; I've been lucky enough to speak to some big hitters on the show over the last year, but Layne Beachley, my guest for episode 028 is right up there. I sat down with Layne at her place in Sydney in December 2017, and we dived right into it, covering the highs and lows of an incredible career. Among the items up for discussion: Layne on how her first six titles were won in a state of fear; how her fierce competitive spirit with driven by a search for belonging; the long fight to gain parity with men in the professional surfing world. Great episode this, with one of Australia’s best-loved athletes. Thanks for coming on the show Layne! As usual, thanks to Scott Nixon (www.scottnixon.co.uk) for post-production help and Matt Ward (www.linguistine.com) for the theme tune.
