Brent Axe chats live following Syracuse basketball's 91-83 win over Northeastern.   Free Throws Mattered! SU was 34-of-48 from the charity stripe and anytime SU shoots 70% from the free throw line, you'll take it.  With the Yin comes the Yang and SU's defense was lacking against 4-6 Northeastern, allowing 52 points in the second half and getting outscored in the paint by the Huskies.  Brent Axe discusses why the Orange are lagging in these buy games and what the return of Donnie Freeman will do to fix that (if it does).  The conversation on Syracuse Sports and our live Syracuse football and basketball postgame shows is always shaped by terrific insight from Syracuse Sports Insiders.  Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today!  Sign up at joinsubtext.com/syracusesports to get your voice heard on the SU football postgame show and have direct text message access to Brent Axe anytime. Brent Axe recaps Syracuse basketball's 78-73 win over Monmouth on Tuesday night at the JMA Dome. The good news is SU survived a late scare by Monmouth and escaped with the win to improve to 4-0.  The bad news is Syracuse has an issue at the free throw line, shooting 58% (19-33) against the Hawks.  SU senior guard JJ Starling really struggled at the line in his return to the lineup with injury, appearing to have a glitch in his shooting stroke and as Starling told Axe in the locker room after the game, a mental and focus issue he needs to overcome at the charity stripe.  Axe discusses the concern of trusting Starling, a player who thrives in driving to the rim, with the ball in late-game situations if his free-throw shooting is broken.  Axe also discusses the key differences that have emerged between this year's Orange team and last, SU's late-start rebounding issues and other items it needs to button up before facing Houston and Kansas in Las Vegas next week.  The conversation on Syracuse Sports and our live Syracuse football and basketball postgame shows is always shaped by terrific insight from Syracuse Sports Insiders.  Become a Syracuse Sports Insider today!  Sign up here to get your voice heard on the SU football postgame show and have direct text message access to Brent Axe anytime.  https://joinsubtext.com/syracusesports Learn more about your ad choices. 193. [Philippians Study] Free Throws of Faith

Crystal Sparks's Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 15, 2025 25:32 Transcription Available

The study of Philippians 3 offers a refreshing counterpoint to our culture's constant pursuit of novelty. When Paul writes, "For me to write the same things to you is not tedious, but for you it is safe," he strikes at the heart of effective spiritual leadership.Drawing from basketball analogies, this episode explores how the greatest NBA players—Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan—never outgrew practicing free throws. Similarly, spiritual maturity isn't about discovering exotic new truths but mastering foundational ones. Just as championship games often come down to free throws, our spiritual effectiveness depends on consistently returning to basic gospel truths. The Apostles' Creed serves as a powerful example. These twelve simple statements weren't elementary teachings to eventually outgrow—they were core truths Christians would "repeat until the day we go to glory." From God as Creator to the resurrection of the body, these fundamentals provide spiritual protection in a world constantly pulling us away from truth.Paul's stern warnings against "dogs," "evil workers," and "the mutilation" reveal his concern about legalism creeping into the church. Those imposing religious requirements missed the essence of true faith. Paul counters with a beautiful definition of genuine believers as those who "worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh."This tension between legalism and grace remains relevant today. As leaders, we must guard against both legalistic tendencies and the temptation to seek novelty over substance. Our cultural drift away from foundational truths makes Paul's message more urgent than ever—repeating core values isn't tedious; it creates safety for those we lead. What free throws of faith do you need to keep practicing? Which foundational truths need renewed emphasis in your leadership? This episode challenges us to embrace the power of spiritual repetition in an age obsessed with the new and novel. My hope is that this podcast helps grow your faith and equips you to accomplish your dreams and goals!Follow me on InstagramFollow me on FacebookFollow me on TikTok

My guests today are the husband-and-wife duo behind emo independent record label Count Your Lucky Stars, home to bands like Camp Trash, Star Funeral, and Thank You I'm Sorry, along with alumni such as Foxing, Free Throw, and Snowing. The pair are also the minds behind Michigan emo band Empire! Empire! (I Was a Lonely Estate). While the band was active for ten years, the pair decided to hang things up in 2016, but have recently reunited to play Best Friends Forever Festival in Las Vegas on October 10-12 alongside headliners Minus the Bear, Jawbreaker, and Jimmy Eat World. If you can't make it to Vegas, however, they'll be playing a string of shows leading up to the festival across the US, kicking things off on September 27 at the Orchid Theater in Ferndale Michigan.LANDON'S TWITTER @igotdefevermanLANDON'S INSTAGRAM @duhfeverLANDON'S LETTERBOXD @landondefeverArtwork by Annie CurleTheme Music by Meghan GoveEdited by Landon Defever

In this all-exclusive interview, Tate sits down with Chase Walsh, the creative force behind Worry Club, to dive deep into the band's evolving sound, creative journey, and latest releases—including the introspective single “Anything Else” and the newly dropped “Little Fucker.” Chase opens up about the shift from recording music in his bedroom to working in professional studios, and how his surroundings continue to shape his sonic identity. Once dreaming of scoring films, Chase found his voice (literally) while singing in college bands—evolving from hushed vocals to full-on belting now that he's no longer confined to apartment walls. The conversation gets especially lively as Chase reminisces about performing at a packed Michigan festival alongside emo heavyweights like Free Throw, Origami Angel, Microwave, and Mom Jeans. The energy, he says, was unmatched—and the shared love for genre icons like Modern Baseball, Tigers Jaw, and Pity Sex continues to bond the band on and off stage. Since dropping their debut EP in 2020, Worry Club has been on a steady rise, gaining a loyal following with their emotionally raw lyrics and relatable themes. Chase shares how the band's music continues to be an outlet for him—blending vulnerability with catharsis—and how addressing mental health through songwriting helps connect with fans on a deeper level.

The South Carolina forward has been rising up draft boards thanks to his physical style of play, defensive versatility, and emerging offensive skill set.  See Red Fred identifies Derik Queen as a player with high bust potential. The show starts with a detour, as See Red Fred launches into a spirited critique of the repetitive Liberty Mutual commercial that seems to plague every timeout during the NBA Conference Finals. Fred can't believe anyone can endure it. Things escalate when Fred uncovers Doug's shocking ignorance of ABC7 meteorologist Cheryl Scott. That revelation leads to a debate about whether anyone still watches the evening news for weather updates in 2025 or if that habit has gone the way of VHS tapes and payphones.
