Find some inclination to STOP DOING IT THEN, because we're back for De Mol België Season 13 - and its visit to the one place that Logan spent six months that we're actually allowed to talk about - Thailand! Over these nine weeks, three guys who don't require any touching - Michael, Logan & Bindles - are recapping and breaking down everything that happens as we try and work out who has been given the task to spread bad luck in the Land of Smiles and become the Mole - continuing with the third episode and elimination of Jan! In this episode - Hilde (maybe) sets a record, Bindles identifies some Taskmaster locations, Michael's quest to destroy Logan's family continues, one of our favourite Americans gets a mention, Jeff Bezos asks us for a video, there's a TV recommendation, we look at the history of not touching elephants anymore, Logan makes a big donation, watermelons are always hilarious, Hilde asks for a special tool, we question whether this season has actually been light on "this fucking show" moments, Gillian Larson makes a cameo, there's a wonderfully passive-aggressive radio DJ, a problem from Sicily is solved, Flanders hates our favourite, Bindles spots an unflattering angle, Jan forms an Only Connect sequence, there are the latest updates to First Suspicions and the Pool, we lock in our final trio of suspicions and we wonder if there'll be a twist after the next execution. You can play along with this week's Bother's Bar Suspect List here. We will see you next week for Episode 4! Please note: This episode is intended on being spoiler-free, but references to any season we have already covered (WIDM 10-11, 14, 16-25 and Renaissance; België 4-12) may be made. It's the quarter-final stage of both the FA Trophy and the FA Vase. We turn to the ever faithful, the never inexact, master of the stats Mr Phil Annets. He wears three hats this week @FATrophyFacts @FAVaseFactffile and @FACupFactfile inspiring us all with records, patterns, and with connections that would leave Victoria Coren Mitchell swooning if Non League was ever a category on Only Connect. Our managerial insight this week comes from the manager of Midland Premier side Whitchurch Alport. Not only does he know the quirky history of his wonderful club, but Adam Shillcock is also at the heart of the revolution that will see a second FA Vase quarter-final within a handful of years and is bringing the town and the community together across the ages. Matt Badcock is our man from the Non League Paper this week. He has his own Trophy and Vase insights, ground grading foresight and managerial movement background knowledge that he brings to the table along with another packed Non League Paper this weekend.
Send us a textIn this episode, the guys bring back the Only Connect game! This time, however, the subjects vary wildly from personal interests and hobbies to Garrett's not so subtle racism. They also continue the newest entry in the Book Corner: Piranesi by Susanna Clark!

We made it to 300 episodes! We've been doing the show for over 5 years and boy oh boy what a milestone! So to celebrate, we did something insane! Look down at the playhead for this episode. No, that's not a mistake. This episode is FIVE HOURS LONG aka 300 minutes long! One minute for every episode we've released! And it is EXACTLY 300 minutes long, we painstakingly made sure of that. We know very few people will probably get through this whole episode, but there's lots of segments here for your enjoyment including: pitching ideas for an episode 9 rewrite, playing Only Connect, another installment of the Matt RPG, an interview of us by past and no doubt future guest of the show Michael DeLaney, past guests chiming in with well wishes, and much much more! It's the end of the month, so you know what time it is! FF time! And WOW, we're halfway through the year and (mercifully) halfway through these movies. If you couldn't tell from my tone, we're turning on these movies now. This is our heel turn. Maybe we're just oversaturated with them, who knows. But I'm DONE. And we play Only Connect! It's great. Why we need a New Social Covenant. In this episode Steve's guest and expert witness is Danny Kruger, Conservative MP, and founder of the New Conservatives group.“Danny Kruger MBE began his career working for a think tank and then serving as David Cameron's chief speechwriter in 2006. He left his role two years later to focus on Only Connect, a youth crime prevention charity he co-founded with his wife Emma. Elected as an MP for Devizes in 2019, he was tasked by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2020 to propose ways to maintain community spirit amid the COVID pandemic. Kruger suggested a ‘new social covenant', which he described as ‘the mutual commitment by citizens, civil society, businesses and the state, to work together for the common good of all.” – Steve ChalkeAbout Danny Kruger First elected in 2019, Danny Kruger MP is Member of Parliament for the Devizes constituency in Wiltshire. He has worked in journalism and in politics and was speech writer for former Prime Minister David Cameron, Political Secretary to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, and PPS at the Department for Levelling Up and Communities. With his wife, Emma, Kruger set up his own charity called Only Connect in 2006, working with those in prison or recently released, to reduce reoffending. He also set up and ran the West London Zone for Children and Young People, coordinating the work of schools, councils, and charities with young people at risk. He is a trustee of Catch 22, a charity that works across the social welfare cycle. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Kathryn Frady of Marble City Opera. In April, Frank and Heather Waliga will co-emcee a fundraiser for InterFaith Health Center and Frank will emcee a fundraiser for Friends of Literacy. Frank asks for the Frank & Friends Show to be listed as an in-kind sponsor of the events. Kathryn asked Marble City Opera's social media coordinator Whitney Wells to create an Instagram post thanking Frank for emceeing the Pop-Up Opera Party. Frank was notified that he has to contact his domain registrar to update the name servers on his personal website. The software he used for his website is now outdated. He was able to update his bio on the Frank & Friends Show website and the Fun 105.9 website but not his Frank Murphy website. Frank's wife Jere asked the Amazon Echo a question by saying, “Alexa.” Instead her iPhone responded by saying, “I'm Siri, did you mean to ask me?” Jere lost an AirPod. Kathryn's AirPods went through the washing machine and survived. The “Find my AirPod” feature seems to be inaccurate. Kathryn lost her house key while walking the dog at night. She thought she would have to change the locks but was able to find the key the next morning. She might get an AirTag for her keys. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Kathryn plays a version of Scrabble on her phone and some memory-improving games on an app called Impulse. Jere and her coworkers play Wordle every day and share their results. Frank and Jere both have long streaks of solving the daily New York Times crossword puzzle. They also play Connections on the NYT app. A British game show called Only Connect has a round that is the same as Connections. A company in Japan created an AI toy robot and gave it an American-sounding name. The robot is called Frank Murphy, which turned up in Frank's Google News alert for his name. One of Frank's friends said he shouldn't use AI to generate a theme song for the show since he has so many friends who are writers and musicians. Frank wonders if one of them could benefit from writing a theme song for free. Kathryn might ask her husband to write one. She also says that her mother refers to Frank as “Uncle Frank.” Support the Frank & Friends Show by purchasing some of our high-quality merchandise at https://frank-friends-show.creator-spring.com Sign up for a 30-day trial of Audible Premium Plus and get a free premium selection that's yours to keep. Only Connect quiz master Jack Waley-Cohen was such a hit over the summer that we've invited him back as our resident Sunday Morning question master.

Ireland Gut Rehab We welcome back Alex McMillan to discuss the state of Ireland's Eurovision Song Contest selections and reflect on the nation's historical successes and recent failures. Amazon Prime takes us back to the Vought cinematic universe with Gen V, a The Boys spinoff of sorts about up-and-coming college "supes" -- and we're glad Nick Rheinwald-Jones could join us to talk about whether it's a TV campus worth visiting, plus the pleasures of thorough world-building, CGI peens, and putting the grodiest deaths out of frame. We went Around The Dial with Starstruck, Only Connect, and the first season of Feud, then headed out to Neptune, CA for Sarah's Canon presentation on the Veronica Mars pilot. Kevin James won, Linda Fairstein lost, and we all gathered around the non-regulation piano for another round of Tube Tunes in Game Time. As noted previously, this half of the episode focuses on 2008's The Baader-Meinhof Complex, directed by Uli Edel. It's a true-story thriller that depicts the activities of a terrorist group in West Germany over a ten-year period beginning in the late 1960s. There are times when you're drawn into the story enough that you find yourself leaning toward rooting for the bad guys, but ultimately you'll come to your senses and see that there's no other way this story could end. COMING ATTRACTIONS: As Sean notes, for the next few episodes the films will be from different nations. The theme of next week's episode is "Only Connect" and once you see these films you'll realize why. We'll begin with Exotica, from 1994, written and directed by Atom Egoyan. It's a Canadian film but it could take place anywhere in North America. And from there we go to 1997's The Edge of Heaven, a Turkish-German drama written and directed by Fatih Akın. It's a film whose near-misses you may find frustrating, but again there's no other way for this story to go. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wordsandmovies/support
On this podcast and subsequent episodes, Every two weeks or so, I will share the most recent PSO piece and follow that with about 20 minutes of pieces randomly selected from the archives. This week begins with a cassette from the soundtrack of Carl Sagan's PBS series, The Cosmos. The synths from The Cosmos are broken up and rearranged and combined with an improvised acoustic guitar captured on the porch. It's the cosmic and the particular or the Infinite and the finite. I loved that series, Sagan's shaggy do and comfy corduroy, the mock turtle necks- everything in a kind of space-age beige all in the service of evoking the possibility of meeting alien life. And he made the Golden Record! which was attached to the Voyager spacecraft and spun out to leave our solar system in search of being found by an extraterrestrial with a turntable. "Only Connect" is the mantra for art-making coined by EM Forrester, and I love the impossibility and the hope embodied in the golden record gesture. The formation of PSO owes much to Sagan's endeavors.Following no. 210, This installment spans a range of tunes and feels. Tense days before the November 2020 election and the sounds of a neighborhood celebrating the election decision with fireworks in a debut with my youngest daughter who was just learning how to play the guitar. There are hums from Friday Harbor marine research boats, light saber sounds gleaned from my bedside clock with an electromagnetic mic and the twang of my dad's nearly unplayable old Gibson guitar plucked on the shore of Birch Bay in the Pacific North West in 2019.A YouTube stream of these pieces where you can see the images with titles and dates. https://www.youtube.com/@PorchSwingOrchestra Visit the PSO project site: PorchSwingOrchestra.org To join the Newsletter and/or support the project you can find PSO on substack at porchswingorchestra.substack.com. This week we're talking about Alfred Hitchcock's body of work with special guest Peter Corey, member of the incredible Chicago genre improv drinking show, Hitch*Cocktails, who are celebrating their 10th anniversary this May. Linda has always felt a strong connection with animals. Her early interest in behavior studies quickly paired with her love of animals to build a career in animal training that has spanned more than 40-years and is still going strong. Linda was in the right place at the right time to attend behavior & training related classes through the Life Learn Program at the Ontario Veterinary Collage, University of Guelph, Canada. She considers herself very fortunate to have attended many in person clinics with Karen Pryor as she was presenting, with Gary Wilks, in the late 1980's. Over her long career Linda has attended countless clinics, webinars, and workshops. She reads extensively and is always seeking opportunities for further education, knowledge, and growth. Linda's motto in life is “Only Connect” and continually seeks deeper understanding and abilities in this goal with both people and animals. When not working Linda attends Master Classes on a diverse range of subjects spanning from rocket science to resilience, to storytelling. She studies music, unrealistically hoping to be a great jazz musician one day, she spends quality time with her dogs, and takes every opportunity to spend time in the wilderness hiking and kayaking. Why do we grade students? Is it to measure and evaluate learning? Provide students an incentive to do their work? Reflect the ‘rigour' of our classroom? Research shows that grades don't accomplish any of these things. What if there was a better way to measure, monitor and evaluate student growth? And share a story of their learning journey... What if we eliminated grades entirely? That's exactly what Gary Heidt, 10th Grade Humanities and Social Entrepreneurship Teacher, did in his high school's 'Nova Lab' learning space. And his students soared to new heights because of it. Learn more about the alternative system he co-designed, and how it can help your students: Increase work ethic and production Become more reflective and meticulous with their work Provide detailed descriptions of their learning journey and growth Take charge of their learning Gary's Blog: https://onlyconnects.wordpress.com Going Gradeless Resources Nova Lab: https://pvhsnovalab.com Connect w/ Gary: Twiter (@Ed_by_design) LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/in/gary-heidt-6146656/) Gary's Bio: Garreth Heidt has taught middle and high school students via a unique instructional approach to creativity and design thinking for the better part of 30 years. His curricula seek to develop skills in critical viewing, question formation, civil discussion, problem finding, and problem solving. The learning process is driven by design-minded means to a unique educational end for his students, and is focused around two simple questions: “Why are things the way they are? How can we make them better?” He currently teaches a 10th grade Gifted Humanities class, and is the Lead Learner and co-designer of his high school's innovation and social entrepreneurship space, NOVA Lab. Mr. Heidt has spent time teaching and developing classes at the middle school, high school, and college level. Danny Kruger MP is a Conservative Member of Parliament for the Devizes constituency in Wiltshire. He and his wife founded and ran Only Connect, a charity that works with men and women in prison or recently released, with the aim of helping them live crime-free lives. Prior to this he worked as a speechwriter for the Conservative party, for a think tank, and as a journalist. He speaks about his conservatism, his conversion to Christianity in his 20's, and why he thinks running a charity is harder than being an MP. We recorded this while Danny was driving, so you may hear a faint ticking noise from his indicator. Today we observe our annual blessing of our children's school bags as they return to a third school year disrupted by the Covid Pandemic. However the children are missing. They are viewing this service from their homes via You Tube - after enjoying yesterday's picnic together at Penfold Park. This marks our first live-streaming of a service. Jennie's address is titled "Only Connect". It's all about the primacy of our social connections and the disruption caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic. Jennie commences with a letter from Susan, the President of the Unitarian Universalist Association in America who offers pastoral and spiritual support to our church. Susan provides some insights into the American social and political experience of the pandemic. Out of the comparisons that inevitably arise, comes some sound practical and spiritual advice from Jenny about maintaining the quality of our social and spiritual connections in hard times. Listen on!
Sell by not selling. No-one likes being 'sold' to. In this episode, we look at how to sell without selling. Or rather how to sell without looking like we're selling. We should always be helping someone solve a need or a problem they have. That way we ask questions, we build trust and we sell without selling.
