Welcome to the 100th episode of My Tennis Journey. And what an episode it is!In many ways, Conor Niland has had the ultimate tennis journey. He's taken the unbelievably hard step from promising junior to pro player. He's played Grand Slam tennis. He's played Davis Cup tennis. He reached number 129 in the World! Some achievement. Since retiring he's become a Davis Cup captain. However, what Conor has become best known for is bringing the whole journey kicking and screaming to life in an absolutely brilliant book called The Racket. A book which became the first tennis book EVER to win the prestigious William Hill Sports Book of the Year. A book that is about the rollercoaster of tennis and the rollercoaster of life.Whether you are a player, parent, coach or someone interested in what life is really like as a sporting professional, I reckon you'll find the book a compelling read. And I think this podcast episode will give you a whole load to think about and reflect on. And that is why I'm very happy that the 100th episode of My Tennis Journey features Conor Niland! Is it entirely coincidental that some of the leading figures in the MAGA movement - including Peter Thiel, Elon Musk and David Sacks - all grew up in Apartheid South Africa? Not according to Simon Kuper who raised the alarm about “Musk, Thiel and the shadow of apartheid South Africa” in a bracing September Financial Times column. But this is a reactionary shadow, Kuper warns, not just haunting the United States but most of the world. Kuper's faith in globalization, he acknowledges, seems to be in retreat everywhere. And 2025, he laments, is only going to deliver more depressing news for those us who still consider ourselves liberals. So if the progressive age of global politics is over, I asked Kuper, then what is left for us to cherish in the new year?Simon Kuper is a journalist who writes for the Financial Times and publishes in newspapers and magazines around the world. He is one of the world's leading writers on soccer. His book Football Against the Enemy won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award. His works are also widely read in translation. Do you ever read a book and love it so much that you go round telling people about it? Like everyone you meet. That's exactly what happened with myself and Conor Niland's book The Racket! From his experience as a junior on the tournament circuit (one I know a lot of tennis parents will recognise) to his days on a tennis scholarship in the US to the rollercoaster ride that is the Pro Tour, Conor's book is a compelling read. If you are anything like me, you'll finish it in a couple of sittings.BUY THE RACKET BY CONOR NILAND HEREhttps://amzn.to/3Cg6ZAQThis is the first book review I've done on My Tennis Journey - and I hope it will be the first of many. This podcast episode is dedicated to my friends at Ashby Castle and all the other friends I have made on the tournament circuit which Conor brings to life so eloquently in the book.If you're a player, coach or tennis fan I think you'll devour this book. It's no surprise to me that it has been shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year for 2024. Send us a textGood For A Girl by Lauren Fleshman is the story of Lauren's life and experience in professional running. Running seemed straight forward when she was growing up, you work hard and you get the reward, but women don't have the same performance trajectory as men when going through puberty. Women often plateau as they get used to their "new body" after puberty, but this comes at an inconvenient time in college when coaches are picking top performers for scholarships and want their team to win in the NCAA system. Lauren's story is about navigating her time in the NCAA, what she saw during her time competing at the college level and beyond (including competitors who would disappear from the running scene following struggles with eating disorders) and why it's important to change things for future girls and women.Who is Lauren Fleshman? In case you haven't heard of her, Lauren is an award winning author and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. This week we are joined by the incredible Lauren Fleshman, New York Times bestselling author of "Good for a Girl", to discuss the systemic ways that our sports culture fails women and girls, and how we can create a better future for the next generation of female athletes.  We dive into how the natural and expected changes in a young women's body during adolescence are met with misunderstanding and pathology, and how the sports systems that girls and women find themselves in are built by men, for men and boys. They don't currently account for or support the experience of the female athlete. Even if you aren't a female-bodied human or an athlete, I hope you'll tune into this episode. This is such an important conversation about challenging the patriarchy and policing of women's bodies, far beyond athletics and running. As always, please listen with compassion and empathy for yourself and any past (or current) experiences this may bring up for you. Tune in to hear more about… The inspiration behind Lauren's book, Good for a Girl How prevalent disordered eating is when girls in adolescence, even into their college years The objectification of female bodies during adolescence How the US sports systems are built for around a default male body The significant differences between young girls and boys when training for sports The lack of normalization and support that girls and young women receive in sports during adolescence What happens when girls fight against natural body changes The rate that young girls drop out of sports What is viewed as "essential equipment" for boys in sports versus girls The financial pressure of athlete scholarships and ensuring performance at the expense of health If weight loss and losing a menstrual cycle is "normal" during sports training The extended time period to truly recover from undereating and overtraining in a women's body Redefining excellence for women in sports beyond race times and body-focused numbers How high risk women athletes are funneled into college sports Performative health and how food choices are policed in athlete spaces What's next for Lauren in her career  About Lauren: Lauren Fleshman is an award winning author and one of the most decorated American distance runners of all time, having won five NCAA championships at Stanford and two national championships as a professional. Cricket correspondent for The Sunday Times, Simon Wilde, joins the podcast to discuss the life and career of the so-called 'Father of Indian Cricket' – K.S. Ranjitsinhji. Born in India in 1872, 'Ranji' – as he was universally known – arrived in England in 1888 to further his education, but took the cricket world by storm with his unorthodox but highly effective batting style. At the height of his success, he was as famous as W.G. Grace. But despite his 'magical' ability in the eyes of the British, he was plagued by many off-field issues throughout his cricket career, including financial complications and fighting for his right to become the princely ruler of a state in India. Many people are asking how do we create legendary cultures in a digital / hybrid work environment. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we ask Daniel Coyle this question: how can we create legendary cultures? Daniel Coyle is a New York Times bestselling author. His book, The Culture Code, was named the Best Business Book of the Year a little while back by Bloomberg. He has a new book out now, called The Culture Playbook: 60 highly effective actions to help your group succeed. He is the man on all things culture, so stay and listen to learn more. Daniel Coyle on Writing His New Book The conversation starts of with congratulating Daniel Coyle on publishing his latest book, The Culture Playbook. Daniel follows up on his thoughts on how he feels when launching a new project or book. “We are living through a moment, aren't we? It's like, when you start a project like this, you're never quite sure when it's going to land. And everybody's trying to figure out, “How are we going? How are we going to do this? How are we going to work together now? Everybody's having that conversation now. It is a moment, and it's kind of fun to explore what's possible” – Daniel Coyle The Transition Period Daniel was then asked about his thoughts on certain huge companies that are telling their people to go back to the office. Another thing to note was that those who are pushing for these things are usually those who are Native Analogs – people whose life don't revolve in the digital sphere. Daniel thinks that this current period is a transitional phase, and it's a way for companies to see what works and what doesn't. “Is it transition and it is totally fascinating to see us people self-organize in this new world. And there's basically two schools of thought about it. The first school of thought is, this was a rupture. People things will never go back to the way they were, people discovered that they had lives outside of work. Then there's another school of thought, which says, Yeah, this is kind of part of a larger, longer journey, there was a sort of zoom out where people realized, hey, life's a lot bigger than work. But at the same time, that there is kind of a joy and a pleasure and a positivity and a productivity that comes out of being in the office. It's maybe not five days a week, maybe it's three, maybe it's two.”    – Daniel Coyle Daniel admits that he himself falls under the second school of thought, and that going to the office can be quite beneficial for productivity, even if it's just 2 to 3 days off a week. Organizing Your Office for the New Work Experience On the topic of adopting the hybrid workplace, one of the issues brought up was the lack of coordination. For example, one could be scheduled to be at the office, yet the people who they have to work or have a meeting with are staying at home. Daniel agrees that this is currently happening in a lot of offices, and is something that the teams and management need to address. They have to be intentional and work out schedules where everyone in the team is in the office at the same time, so they can meet and collaborate on what needs to be done for their projects. Management can also help in coordinating schedules, so that different teams that need to work together can have overlapping schedules. But at the end of the day, the initiative to coordinate should come from the teams themselves. Otherwise, you'll be stuck in your cubicle, still doing zoom calls with your teammates. To hear more from Daniel Coyle and how to create a legendary culture in your workplace, download and listen to this episode. Bio Daniel Coyle is the New York Times best-selling author of The Culture Playbook, The Culture Code, The Secret Race, The Little Book of Talent, The Talent Code, Lance Armstrong's War, Hardball: A Season in the Projects and the novel Waking Samuel. A few weeks back I did a quick teaser episode with our previous guest Casey Hoban at a private party he invited me down to at Ocean Resort Casino. Casey brought over 100 people down to Ocean Resort Casino this past weekend and invited me down to record a proper follow-up interview with him. We catch up about all of his latest endeavors and successes. Casey and I recorded in the very accommodating William Hill Sports Book. It was great getting to see so many people having a great time even as a Nor'easter was going on outside. In this follow-up, Casey and I discuss the importance of sticking to your guns with a positive attitude and bringing people together to help lift everyone up at once. On this trip, I decided that Ocean Resort Casino will be the location for the live event for the end of my upcoming mastermind group. If you are ready for 2019 to be the best year yet for your business, read more about Level Up For 2019. Huge thank you to Ocean Resort Casino and Bruce Deifik, owner, for letting us film the interview at the resort.   Bruce Deifik and Super Joe Pardo theoceanac.com Episode 367
