Send us a textThank you for being here today! In celebration of Mother's Day, let's revisit our special Mom episodes! When these first aired, I was excited about our upcoming 50th episode. Now, here I am, about to record our 200th episode! I guess I was right: Girls CAN do anything! In part 1 of this MONSTER-sized mom episode, we're celebrating moms, girl power. Girls can do ANYTHING and be ANYTHING, but telling girls that they can or should do EVERYTHING is one of the factors that establishes the societal bias that places moms as the Default Parent, a mentally and physically draining role of providing primary care for parenting and home-related tasks. This syndrome exists and exhausts both working and stay-at-home moms, but it is especially challenging for working moms, so let's also have a conversation about 7 tips for work-family integrations. Thank you for listening and being part of this community! Let's get social. Follow me on Facebook, on Twitter @reframing_me, on Instagram @reframingme and on TikTok @reframingmeI hope you enjoyed the episode! Please leave a review, catch up on any missed episodes, and be sure to follow the show, so you don't miss new content!
In this episode of Untidy, Alice Soper is back behind the mic with Hannah, stepping in as co-host once more while Matilda continues to handle the jandal. Alice and Hannah get into Alice’s journey toward motherhood in a queer partnership. From wanting to be a mum, tweaking her fiancee’s algorithm, finding sperm donors, considering whakapapa, and choosing to step outside the medical system; Alice takes us on her queer journey towards motherhood. Alice opens up about the big conversations with her partner, the moment she knew she wanted to carry, and how they’re hoping to build their whanau with love, intention, and community. The girls take a detour into Alice’s elaborate proposal, a history lesson on the rebellion of women’s rugby, and a solid rant about gender politics in sport. In this episode of Untidy, Matilda and Hannah are joined by internationally renowned exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist Dr Stacy Sims — a trailblazer on a mission to revolutionise how women train, eat, and perform. Known for her viral TED Talk “Women Are Not Small Men”, bestselling book Roar, and over 100 peer-reviewed papers, Stacy has dedicated her career to closing the gender gap in sports science. In this conversation, she dives into the often-overlooked physiological and emotional challenges girls face during puberty — challenges that are too often misunderstood or ignored, causing many to lose confidence and drop out of sport. With her new course NEXT GEN, Stacy is focused on educating coaches and parents to better support developing girls. She explores how puberty impacts performance, confidence, and injury risk, and why it’s crucial to rethink how we train and talk to our daughters. From the damaging effects of language like “girl pushups” and “sissy squats,” to the ripple effects of diet culture and uniform design, Stacy highlights the changes we need to make — and how to do it. This episode is a rallying cry to shift the culture around girls’ health, sport, and self-image — and to give them the tools, language, and support they deserve. This podcast truly loves a pop girl group - and it shows! For years we have talked about doing a special episode celebrating the 'lost' girl bands of the 2000s and now here we are. It felt absolutely right to kick things off with the three distinct British girl groups that were launched in 2009: Mini Viva, Dolly Rockers and Girls Can't Catch. While these groups sadly disbanded not long after their launch, they will always live on in our hearts. Together, Joel and David present you the girlies, getting into their singles and album sampler highlights, and more! Bring on the nostalgia! Mini Viva, the Xenomania pop duo of Britt and Frankee, released three singles 'Left My Heart in Tokyo', 'I Wish' and 'One Touch'. Dolly Rockers, who started their fledgling journey on The X Factor but returned stronger in a few years with the buzz-worthy track 'Je Suis Une Dolly' which led to a deal with Parlophone, culminating in their official debut single 'Gold Digger'. Fascination Records' Girls Can't Catch was positioned as the 'little sister' of label mate girl groups Girls Aloud and The Saturdays, but they ultimately left us wanting more after the release of their singles 'Keep Your Head Up' and 'Echo'. If you are loving what we're doing, let us know in the comments. Who would you like to see in a 'Lost Girl Bands Vol.2'? In this special two-part episode, the Pop Gays of a Certain Age are talking about their favourite songs from their favourite co-ed (boy/girl) groups! Because, unlike what Dame Geri of Halliwell said in her 2000 hit 'Bag It Up' ("cos Men are from Venus and Girls are from Mars") Boys and Girls CAN indeed co-exist in the same musical ensemble. Join Leigh, Graham, Paul, Rhys and Peter as they prove this very point to be true! Don't forget to come back for Part 2 in which we will be interviewing one-half of one of the most iconic Boy/Girl duos of all time! Listen to the episode to find out who it is!
Special guest: Katie Hurley According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, approximately one out of five teens has a mental health disorder, diagnosable by clinical methods, and nearly one-third show symptoms of depression. Now you might be thinking- well, many teens seem depressed to me, their moods and their emotions are all over the place! Stress is overwhelming! Yes, that can be true- symptoms of depression in adolescents aren't always easy to identify because they often appear as normal adolescent behavior. But if we keep an eye open for consistent depressed behavior and indicators like, fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, changes in eating patterns, social withdrawal, and/or anger- these can serve as early warning signs that can allow us to get help for our teens as depression is absolutely treatable but NOT fixable on its own. Teens who have depression need therapy, support at home and yes, some also need medication. There's no quick fix and thankfully, we have Katie Hurley here to explain how we know if our child needs help, what we and our teens can do at home to assist and what exercises and tools we can use to improve mood, self-esteem and motivation. Katie Hurley, LCSW, is a child and adolescent psychotherapist, parenting expert, and writer. She is the founder of “Girls Can!” empowerment groups for girls between ages 5-11. Hurley is the author of The Happy Kid Handbook” “No More Mean Girls,” (both subjects we have interviewed Katie on previously on How to Talk to Kids about Anything) and her new workbook, The Depression Workbook for Teens, which is the #1 new release on Amazon for Teen and Young Adult Self Esteem and Self Reliance Issues. Her work can be found in The Washington Post, PBS Parents, and US News and World Report, among other places. She practices psychotherapy in the South Bay area of Los Angeles and earned her BA in psychology and women's studies from Boston College and her MSW from the University of Pennsylvania. She splits her time between California and Connecticut with her husband and two children. Tracy Dawson had a steep learning curve when she was starting out in screenwriting, as she came to realise the same opportunities didn't exist for her, deemed as “niche” as a woman, as they did for men. This inspired her new book Let Me Be Frank, about women who disguised themselves as men to get what they wanted. She chats to Hannah about the book, defiance, and whether or not “shit” is a swear word. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen hits the beach to chat to former world champion Pauline Menczer, about being a trailblazer in women's surfing, and the new documentary Girls Can't Surf. In Rated or Dated, Mick's eyes are hurting, because we're back in 1992, revisiting the ker-ay-zy bitches of gratuitous tit-tastic Single White Female. Meanwhile, there's a medley of protests with a dash of human excrement in the Bush Telegraph. To enjoy our podcasts without adverts you can support us on Patreon. We're joined by Victor Anastacio, a host, actor, and stand-up comedian who makes a living by courageously putting himself in front an audience and making people laugh. ====== Hey, fellow adults! Growing Up in Show Biz (0:00:00) We watch our favorite actors and actresses on the screen and on social media, and often feel like we know them personally. But do you ever stop and wonder what their real life is like? What do they talk about at the dinner table and what chores do they hate? And what about our favorite actors whose whole families are in show business—what is that like? Well today, we are speaking with Paige Howard, actress and daughter of director and academy award winning filmmaker Ron Howard, to hear what it was like growing up in a major show biz family, as well as hear about her current projects, including the new Nickelodeon show directed by her dad. Ahab's Adventures (0:17:23) Geeg Wiles is the voice, caretaker, and keeper of chronicles for Ahab's Adventures. Captain Ahab is a three-foot-tall, forty-pound, bright yellow, wooden fisherman/wannabe pirate captain. Together, they are on a mission to motivate others by showing that if Captain Ahab can conquer his bucket list, then anyone can blast through their excuses and COMMANDEER LIFE!!! An average year for Geeg and his partner consists of such undertakings as jumping out of planes, rafting gnarly white water rapids, swimming at Black Canyon National Park, taking in the historic buildings of Stockholm, exploring the falls of the Upper Peninsula, or hitchhiking through Patagonia. Girls Can (0:29:34) When I was a little girl there were a lot of things that girls supposedly “couldn't” do. Girls can't get dirty at recess, girls can't be as strong as boys, girls can't run for president. What if instead, we told our girls all the great things they can do? A new book is trying to do that—with GIRLS CAN! Smash Stereotypes, Defy Expectations, and Make History! Here to tell us more about what Girls Can! Is achieving is one of the co-authors, Marissa Sebastian! Are MLM's Right for You? (0:41:08) Whether it's pest control, makeup, or solar panels, we've all come in contact with a multi-level marketing business, or MLM for short. Many of these companies get a bad rap for their recruitment model and often-aggressive selling techniques. They make us think of the pushy door-to-door salesman who comes around trying to sell us pest control or a new internet provider for ridiculous prices. But are they all bad? And what should you know if you're interested in working for one of these companies? Joining us this morning is Ashley Smith, an attorney from Salt Lake City, here with us to discuss multi-level marketing businesses and how to determine if they're a good fit for you. Holiday Party Ideas (0:52:50) Despite our holiday celebrations looking different this year, we can still have a magical season. Marley Majcher, The Party Goddess, shares tips, tricks and ideas on how to throw epic and safe celebrations, either virtually or with your family. Lisa's Christmas Music Sampler: Peter Breinholt (1:10:45) Lisa and Richie are joined by award-winning musician Peter Breinholt for an exclusive performance. Gaslighting (1:32:00) It's frustrating when you remember something differently than someone else, especially if you've had your feelings hurt! And while situations like this are typically due to poor communication—there is also a chance that there might be gaslighting at play. Gaslighting is a manipulation tactic and the effects of it can be harmful. Here to tell us more about how we can recognize and recover from gaslighting is psychologist Dr. Stephanie Sarkis.
Keeping Kids Active During Online School (0:00:00) As a parent myself, I can relate to all you moms and dads out there who have struggled to watch your kids spend hours staring at a computer screen for school. The pandemic and remote schooling have robbed our kids of P.E, recess, after school sports, and many other physical activities that had been part of their daily routine. So, what can we do to help keep our kids healthy and active during this time of social distancing? Lucky for us, we are talking to Dr. Keshia Pollack Porter, Professor at John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, about this very topic. Practicing Gratitude (0:35:32) As wonderful as the holidays are, at times it can be hard to keep that in perspective. All the stress of holiday cooking, and holiday shopping, and holiday family bonding time are opportunities for friction and little fires. Maybe it's something your sexist Uncle Jim said or the turkey you've just spent 5 hours cooking burned, or half of the guests showed up late. Whatever it is, there's bound to be something this holiday season that gets under your skin. Which is exactly why we should be practicing gratitude this holiday season and focusing on positive outcomes. Here to discuss how to focus on positive experiences this holiday season is friend of the show, Carrie Ann Rhodes. Girls Can! Here to tell us more about what Girls Can! Is achieving is one of the co-authors, Marissa Sebastian! The Social Dilemma (1:07:55) Who listening has had the chance to watch the Social Dilemma documentary? Whether you've seen it or not, the evolution of social media platforms has brought up dozens of debates on what's ethical and what's not in marketing. Joining us today is Prince Ghuman, CEO of neuromarketing company PopNeuro, here with us to talk about marketing, social media, and the neurological effects of both. What They Don't Tell You about Entrepreneurship (1:28:23) Starting a business can be both intimidating and overwhelming if you've never done it before, especially if you're taking the risk of leaving your current job to do it. While you get advice from friends, books and the internet, much of your learning comes from hands-on experience. And unfortunately, there are still aspects of entrepreneurship that can catch you by surprise. So, we invited an expert on the matter to share what she's learned from experience as an entrepreneur, former corporate woman and now CEO of her own business MOMables . . . Laura Fuentes.
Christian has the immense pleasure of getting to know Rosie Bones and Carmen Vandenberg of the hot new band BONES UK. For London-bred band BONES UK, every song is a chance to speak their minds with total freedom, to shed light on the extreme disconnect between the status quo and the far more glorious world inside their heads. On their self-titled debut album, vocalist Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg confront everything from the beauty industrial complex to toxic masculinity to music-scene sexism, embedding each track with choruses primed for passionate shouting-along. With their galvanizing energy and relentless joie de vivre, BONES UK offer up an album that's both provocative and endlessly exhilarating, even in its most outraged moments.True to the l.a.-based band's anti-conformist spirit, bones uk unfolds with an entirely uncontainable sound, a riff-heavy collision of rock-and-roll and rough-edged electronic music. In forging that sound, Rosie and Carmen worked in close collaboration with producer Filippo Cimatti, who shaped the album's kinetic textures with lavish use of electronic bass. Matched by Carmen's masterful yet inventive guitar work and Rosie's magnetic voice—an instrument that seamlessly slips from menacing to stunningly tender—the result is a bold new sonic world, savage and frenetic and infinitely mesmerizing. On the album-opening “beautiful is boring”, BONES UK bring serpentine riffs and sinister grooves to a feverish statement against societal expectations of beauty. “We're living in an era when everyone's being airbrushed into looking all the same, when really it's imperfections that make you beautiful,” says Rosie. On “Filthy Freaks,” the band twists the narrative to an all-out celebration of the perfectly imperfect, the song's bright tempo and surf-rock rhythms backed by Rosie's brazen lyrics (e.g., “i like your leather/but i like it better on my floor”). Raw defiance also fuels tracks like “Pretty Waste”—a dizzying anti-anthem driven by blistering beats and Rosie's haunting vocal delivery. “It's about this idea that if you're a girl, you can't be both attractive and smart,” Rosie says. “We wanted to show that you can be feminine and strong and tough and angry all at the same time: you can be whatever you want to be.” Another moment of brilliant fury, “Leach” lashes out against all the creeps Bones UK have encountered in their wanderings around L.A., cleverly contrasting their venomous lyrics with swinging rhythms and flamenco-inspired strumming. And on “I'm Afraid of Americans,” Bones UK bring that sardonic mood to a divinely snarling cover of David Bowie's late-'90s hit, instilling the track with a wild new urgency.Elsewhere on the album, BONES UK shift from the restless reverie of “Souls” to the dreamy balladry of “Black Blood” to the swampy blues of “Girls Can't Play Guitar,” echoing the deliberate unpredictability of the album-making process. “We recorded everywhere—in bathrooms, in the backs of cars,” says Rosie, noting that most of bones came to life in their basement studio in laurel canyon. “We're together all the time and we love that freedom of being able to record whenever we want. We don't need that pressure of going into some big studio; we'd much rather just be instinctive about it.”https://www.bonesuk.com/https://open.spotify.com/artist/16kd5X3pBMOtXdLlX5LcAw?si=AijqDWOVTOmz00k_yzu4mQ
