What would you like to see more of? Let us know!In this episode of Discover Daily, we explore the European Commission's groundbreaking antitrust investigation into Corning's Gorilla Glass business practices. The probe examines potential anticompetitive behavior, including exclusive agreements that require manufacturers to source nearly all their specialized glass from Corning. With Apple's significant investment in Corning's technology at stake, the investigation could reshape the smartphone component industry. We then delve into Rutgers mathematician Pham Tiep's remarkable solutions to two long-standing problems in representation theory. Using character theory, which studies how abstract groups can be represented by matrices, Tiep solved the Height Zero Conjecture and made key advances in Deligne-Lusztig theory. These solutions have practical applications in quantum mechanics, cryptography, and error-correcting codes. The episode concludes with an alarming update from Naples, Italy, where the Phlegraean Fields supervolcano shows increased activity. In May 2024, the area experienced its most intense seismic event in four decades, with 150 earthquakes in five hours. The ground in Pozzuoli has risen 1.3 meters since 2007, and the Solfatara crater now emits 4,000-5,000 tons of CO2 daily. Extinction: Rethinking the dodo's demise, and could a supervolcano threaten humanity's future?

Tiny Matters

Around 8 million years ago, an underwater volcano just to the east of Madagascar formed the island of Mauritius. Pigeons on nearby islands set flight and settled on that island. There they continued to evolve, and the dodo bird eventually emerged as its own species: Raphus cucullatus. And tiny Mauritius, with an area of just 720 square miles, was the only place in the entire world where the dodo lived. And it lived a good life, among bats and tortoises and other birds, safe from the predators its ancestors left back on land millions of years before. But in 1598, when sailors from the Netherlands arrived, the dodo's luck ran out.On today's Tiny Matters we dive into the history of the bird that everyone loves to make fun of: the dodo. And we're going to explore some of the work investigating why this bird went extinct and what it was like when it was alive. Then we'll shift gears and talk about what some people worry will cause a massive extinction in the future — one that might include us: supervolcanoes. These are volcanoes capable of eruptions thousands of times larger than the volcanic eruptions we are most familiar with today. The recent volcanic eruptions in Iceland or the deadly Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980 pale in comparison. These are volcanoes bigger than anything we've experienced as human beings in our recorded history. So are we ready if one comes our way?Send us your science stories/factoids/news for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us episode and to be entered to win a Tiny Matters coffee mug! There are a few extreme natural events that could potentially end life on Earth. A massive asteroid impact, like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs, could cause catastrophic damage. Supervolcano eruptions, which are much bigger than regular volcanic eruptions, could spew enough ash and gas into the atmosphere to block out the sun and trigger a global winter. A gamma-ray burst from a nearby star could blast Earth with deadly radiation. Lastly, a significant shift in the Earth's climate, beyond anything we've seen, could make the planet uninhabitable for most life forms. #brightside Animation is created by Bright Side. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music from TheSoul Sound: https://thesoul-sound.com/ Listen to Bright Side on: Spotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/0hUkPxD... The Earth is a gigantic ball of semi-molten rock, with a heart of iron as hot as the surface of the Sun. Titanic amounts of heat left over from its birth and the radioactive decay of trillions of tons of radioactive elements find no escape but up. Currents of rock spanning thousands of kilometers carry this energy to the surface. Earth's crust is the only thing in their way. It feels solid to us, but it is only a fragile barrier, an apple skin around a flaming behemoth. True apocalypses can break through and unleash eruptions tens of times more powerful than all of our nuclear weapons combined, subjecting the climate to centuries worth of change in a single year, while drowning continents in toxic ash and gases: supervolcanoes. It happened around 8.7 million years ago. All of a sudden, vast grasslands started to open. Clouds of volcanic gas and ash covered the sky. Flows of lava streamed down the hills and across the plains. Within minutes, black volcanic glass started to rain from above, wiping out animals, crushing plants. It didn't take long before the land caved in, opening giant pits filled with red-hot magma. It was the greatest eruption of the Yellowstone Supervolcano. This giant, which is actually one of the largest active volcanic systems on the planet, wasn't named SUPERvolcano for nothing. Hour 1: The Jets hired Nathaniel Hackett as their Offensive Coordinator, fueling more speculation that Aaron Rodgers may end up here. If the Jets don't get Aaron Rodgers, will Nathaniel Hackett still be successful here? Frank Reich was hired as the Head Coach in Carolina and Boomer can see Derek Carr going there. Boomer said you have to go GM to GM between the Jets and Packers to see if a deal for Rodgers can get done. Boomer likes the hire of Hackett for the Jets. Jerry is here for his first update but first Gio tells us that NCAA tournament announcerBilly Packer passed away yesterday at the age of 82. Jerry is broadcasting from his family room as his basement flooded again last night. Jerry said home ownership is a load of crap. The Knicks won in Boston last night which was quite impressive. The Nets lost to a bad Pistons team. NBA All Star starters were announced and Kyrie is one of those players. Sauce Gardner talked about the potential of getting Aaron Rodgers. George Kittle talked about the tough task of winning in Philadelphia. Jason Kelce talked about not getting in your head for the big game. Gio said Willie Gay was asked about what impresses him about the Bengals offense and he said, ‘nothin'. In the final segment of the hour, Bob Gelb's wife knitted Boomer a hat to wear in Kansas City. We all tried on the hat and it is pretty huge.  Hour 2: Gio said the Jets have to do everything they can to get Aaron Rodgers. They cannot go into the season again with Zach Wilson and Mike White. But Aaron Rodgers is a complicated person and if he wants out of Green Bay he has to talk to the GM directly about it. Jerry returns for an update and starts with the Knicks beating the Celtics in Boston in OT last night. The Pistons beat the Nets in Brooklyn. Sauce Gardner talked about the possibility of Aaron Rodgers coming to the Jets. Nick Sirianni talked about teams being intimidated when they come into Philadelphia. Christian McCaffrey loves his offensive line. Mike McCarthy talked about the draft, next season and Dak Prescott. A college basketball player had an exploding testicle. In the final segment of the hour, Boomer said Joe Burrow has figured out the special sauce, the same way Tom Brady did.  Hour 3: We played a clip from Maggie & Perloff. They had Packers WR Romeo Doubs on and he said he's never hung out with Aaron Rodgers outside of the facility. Gio thinks that's a big deal as Boomer always used to hang out with his wide receivers. We also talked about the potential of Jimmy G instead of Rodgers. Jerry returns for an update but first Gio said people are still asking if the Jets should go all in for Aaron Rodgers. YES!! Trent Williams talked about playing in Philadelphia and the fans making a difference. Fletcher Cox is not looking ahead to a potential Super Bowl. Zac Taylor talked about the pressures of the Championship game. Andy Reid said the rest of the team is picking their game up to help an injured Mahomes. Mike McCarthy talked about his future and said he never felt his job was in jeopardy. The Knicks won in OT in Boston last night. Atlanta Braves GM was pumped when Carlos Correa went to the Twins instead of the Mets. In the final segment of the hour, Gio wants to know which Islanders jersey he should wear at the game tomorrow.  Hour 4: Gio's wife texted him a picture of the refrigerator shelf shattered on the kitchen floor. On this week's show: A medieval German cemetery yields clues to Jewish migrations in Europe, and supercomputers help researchers estimate magma under Yellowstone First up this week on the podcast, we explore the genetic history of Jewish people in Europe. Contributing Correspondent Andrew Curry talks with host Sarah Crespi about researchers working with rabbis and the local Jewish community to apply new techniques to respectfully study remains in a medieval Jewish cemetery in Germany. We also have a story on how much magma has accumulated inside Yellowstone National Park's supervolcano. Producer Meagan Cantwell talks with Ross Maguire, an assistant professor in the geology department at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, about using supercomputers to get a clearer picture of the volcanic system's subsurface. Although this new study shows more magma than previous estimates, it's still not nearly enough for an eruption anytime soon. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. On this episode of the Sofa King Podcast, we talk about the Supervolcano under Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone Supervolcano is one of the few in the world, and if it ever erupts, it will be a world-ending, cataclysmic event. America will pretty much be a wasteland (and a good chunk of Canada…sorry neighbors to the north). If there is a super eruption, it will last for months, send magma nearly 70 miles into the sky, and bury a significant portion of the U.S. in over ten feet of burning ash. So, what is NASA's plan to cool it down? When did it erupt last, and when do the pattern suggest it is due again? Why do some geologists think it will never happen again?
