Today's podcast is the ultimate example of cross-pollination. On Second Nature, we frequently talk about the value of connecting with people in adjacent industries, and that you get to have a glimpse into the future of your own industry. The people who are best at predicting shifts in an industry are typically the winners. What better way to do that than to identify an industry that's ahead of you and ask every possible question you can come up with? Today's guest is Travis Wannlund, who just finished up a huge run as the head of Gaming at Red Bull. His most notable contribution to Red Bull was helping brand and sports marketing people understand the impact of gaming on their bottom line, how to connect with a wider audience and how Gaming insights inform the way Red Bull's other athletes do business. He made it easy for the people who were paying attention to reap insane benefits, and now it's your turn. Part of creating The Max Frequency Podcast was to restore all the episodes of Behind the Pixel, an interview show I did in 2017 for seven episodes. These will be mixed into this feed so that the show can live on podcast services once more. Below are the original show notes, with some light editing. You can check out the original posts here. The whole gang is here to hang out with you for a chat. They talk time travel in media. Some movies do it well, some do it poorly. What is your favorite time travel movie? They hired a lighting artist for Metroid Prime 4. They've worked for Dreamworks, Disney, and Sony before. Who cares about the lighting artist? Everyone! Because that means it might actually get finished at some point! GrandPooBear has the hottest of takes. His stream room is hot, and he can't take it anymore! WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! Is it worth the commitment? They also talk about Twitch Town. Would it be feasible to make a whole town just for streamers? How much would it cost, and is there a viable way to do it? Twitch's voting API is finally getting released to developers. Jaku is excited to get to work on it. You know that means there will be crazy stuff coming soon. WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! Nintendo is slowly dropping Switch Pro hints, and we give out takes on it. Lastly, our Hot Take is from Jaku. Ikea won't be delivering his smart blinds when they said they will. authorblues has joined Jaku and Xwater for the news. Glitchcon just happened. It was pretty great, but the best part was how much of Glitchcon used Warp World. Are we becoming integral to Twitch? Multiplayer ads have been announced for Twitch. Viewers will be able to watch the same ads together and have an interactive poll about it. Will this be the new big thing, or just another annoyance for the viewer? We have a new segment: This Week's Villain. Nintendo has been up to no good again. They filed a cease and desist order against The Big House, a giant Smash Bros tournament. They are also filing DMCA take-downs on Twitch to people playing Age of Calamity early, even though the game is released in some parts of the world. They have also announced some changes to how islands can be used for brands in Animal Crossing. Why do they keep treating the people that love their products with disdain? We talk about this year's Game of the Year nominees. They're all good, but is this even a good year for games compared to years past? This week's Hot Take is a bit weird. During Twitch Rivals, xQc was stream sniping his opponents in Fall Guys. GrandPooBear was on his team, and most of that team has been banned from Twitch Rivals for 6 months and suspended on Twitch for a week. Is that too hard a penalty, or not harsh enough? GrandPooBear is busy playing Fall Guys (really.) So Jaku and Xwater are picking up the slack. Microsoft had an Xbox price leak and ended up posting their prices online. $300 for digital only and $500 for the slightly better version with a disk drive. Fortnite is getting a custom Switch. But, it's only in certain countries. Is this the way a way for Epic to battle Apple and the Play Store? You thought that Nintendo was done for the year? NOPE! Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is coming out this year. They may even have more in store for us. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was a decent game. But it was infamous for being removed from all digital stores for many years. Finally, it's back. Will it be a blockbuster hit, or did it even matter to begin with? Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is also getting a remake. Maybe that means they'll be bringing the series back. Our Hot Take this week is on Fall Guys. It's a great game, but there are TOO many tournaments for it! Too much of a good thing can lead to burnout. Let's keep this game going, or Fortnite will be kind again. WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! GrandPooBear and Xwater are here with the news of the week. Mario's 35th anniversary is now, and they're not holding back. 3d Mario All Stars is big. Mario 35, the new Mario Battle Royale is huge. IRL Mario Kart? Yes please! Keep hitting us with these bangers and the Switch will stay the king. Nvidia just hit us with their new video cards, and wow. They've made a lot of cards obsolete, but they're being fairly reasonable with the new card's prices. Is AMD in trouble? Fall Guys' charity bidding war for a skin in the game is over, with a combined donation of One Million Dollars from G2 Esports, Ninja, Aim Lab, and Mr Beast. They each get a skin, but if that was going to happen, why not just make it a $250k donation? Fall Mania happened last week and it was amazing. It went down to the last event. That leads to our Hot Take. Twitch Rival's Fall Guys event went on a different points system. It meant that the team with the most crowns might not win. Chat wasn't happy with it. Can we come together and make a standard ruleset that will make everyone happy? We have another Hot Take though. Subtember is here, and as has become the standard, it's worse than last year, and the year before. Is it even worth promoting if it's not doing anything for the communities that care the most? But, we haven't seen the prices of either console yet, so who knows? This week we have a Hot Take about Twitch. They're laying down the law on the DMCA with clips. Jaku and GrandPooBear are here to bring you the news. There's a new streaming platform in town. PlexStorm is an adult gaming streaming site, with NSFW content. Is this the Mixer? Today's Hot Topic: Alinity was banned again for nudity on stream. She's been in this position before. Does it really matter? Assassins Creed Valhalla dropped us a trailer. It looks cool, but is it just another Assassins Creed game? Are they all pretty much the same? The Last of Us 2 had a big leak. The story was released into the wild. For a game like this, it's the thing that matters most. Steer clear of it if you care. The Japan Retro Game Association gave away 100 SNES and games to kids in Japan. But, they didn't get any CRTs. Will this hurt the love of the games with the input lag? WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! Check it out at https://www.patreon.com/WarpWorld Check out https://coins.warp.world for a salty treat! This week Jaku, Xwater, and Grandpoobear are here to update you on the news. The biggest news is Super Mario Maker 2 had a huge update within 24 hours of announcing it. It added Koopa Kids, Mario 2 (costume), and at least 1 powerup per theme. It's huge and we love it. We have a Hot Take on Maker 2's updates. Should they do huge updates all at once, or spread them out like a small drip. Both would be better with just a little bit of communication. Animal Crossing got a Nature Day update. It's pretty big, and it seems like they have at least a years worth of content, if not more. Keep these coming Big N! Xwater is now a pirate with an eye patch. Don't worry, he's actually ok, he just looks cooler for a few more weeks. Crowd Control took over the charity fundraising for St Jude Children's Hospital this week. They raised over $50,000 for charity this weekend. Congratulations! WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! Check it out at https://www.patreon.com/WarpWorld Check out https://coins.warp.world for a salty treat! Mini-games withing full games?! Episode 18 is all about those fun, pumped, silly and playful rhythms that play in the background while you are trying to complete the mini-games or bonus stage. Sometimes they can be infuriating if you need to grind a hard side quest for an ultimate weapon, and some are relaxing while you get through the set piece, sometimes you are rushed and have to finish withing the time limit. Either way these tracks are fun. We give a special shout out to CaptainCainer and GrandPooBear two streamers and Youtubers that have certain connections to some tracks played.Track list for this episode includes:Donkey Kong Country - Bonus Stage (Intro)Dragon Quest 3 - Boogie-Woogie (Matt)Final Fantasy 9 - Vamo Ala Flamenco (Derek)Final Fantasy 8 - Shuffle or Boogie (Matt)Pokemon Stadium - Minigame Menu (Derek)Godzilla Domination - Bonus Stage (Matt)Super Smash Bros. Jaku, Xwater, and GrandPooBear are in the house. Today, they're joined by Kungfufruitcup, a streamer and interviewer for Games Done Quick. They have a great interview with her about who she is, and what she does. With Corona Virus on the loose, everything is getting canceled. Be careful out there everyone. Wash your hands, don't cough on people, and please don't hoard everything. Other people need supplies too. Nintendo of America's former president, Reggie, is now on the board of directors of GameStop. Can he pull them back from the brink? We have a Hot Take on spoilers. GrandPooBear is back with Jaku and Xwater to bring you the news. While it's not directly gaming related, NCAA athletes can now take paid endorsements. It might not seem like a big deal, but Poo has some insight on it. Shigeru Miyamoto was given the Person of Cultural Merit award. His accomplishments are being acknowledged by the Japanese government, and we think he completely deserves it. Reviews for Death Stranding are out. It's either the best game ever made and a masterpiece, or the worst piece of hot garbage ever. What's the truth? You'll have to play 100+ hours to find out. Luigi's Mansion 3 is out. It's a lot of fun, but nothing groundbreaking. If you liked the other's in the series, you'll like this one though. Origin is EA's digital platform for their games. But, they're starting to release their games on Steam too. What does that mean for Origin? BlizzCon has happened. On day one they issued an apology, that wasn't really a very good one. They announced the next expansion for WoW. They showed some videos on Diablo 4. Overwatch is getting a sequel. Warcraft is getting a new game. Warcraft 4? No. Warcraft 3: Reforged, a remake of Warcraft 3. Is this enough to bring them back to the top of their game? We have a Hot Take on Fallout 76. There's a new subscription service. For $13 you can get access to private servers, but also some benefits that makes you better in game. The player base has risen up. The subscribers are stronger, but the free to players out number them. It's like a Fallout civil war. Is this good, bad, or just funny? WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! GrandPooBear is in Hawaii for Speedrun Sessions, so this week is just Jaku and Xwater giving us the news. Game Informer laid off half of their employees. The way we buy and talk about video games has drastically changed over the years, and this is just one of the consequences. Gamescom happened, we go over some of our highlights, including the Stadia and Death Stranding. There's a new version of OBS that has a lot of changes and upgrades. We talk about that and capture cards. The Matrix 4 will be a thing. Jaku fanboys over it. We have a rehash of stories from the past. They're NEW? Wow. Mario Maker 2's Multiplayer is amazing. Even though it has problems, it's so fun, that doesn't matter. The real story though, GrandPooBear's level got deleted. AGAIN. Nintendo needs to leave our boy alone. He's not doing anything wrong. Luigi's Mansion 3 got a date. October 31st. That's pretty soon, and we'll have a Gooigi in our hands. There's a new Switch coming soon. Not the Lite, but one with longer battery life. Will you buy another one just for that? Lastly we discuss super hero video games. They're weird. Very few of them make you feel like the hero. Spider-man has a great one on the PS4 though. We talk about how we would make a super hero game, and what we hope to see. We end it all with some really good Side Quest-ions. WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! This week, Saturn replaces GrandPooBear while the crew is at GDC. We talk about GDC, what we did there, and drop some hints about things to come. Then we talk a little bit about what Warp World really is, and how much it means to us. The Nindies came out and Cadence of Hyrule blew us away. A new Legend of Zelda game, but from the indie developer of Crypt of the Necrodancer. This could mean a lot of interesting things for Nintendo's future. The Outer Worlds is Epic exclusive, people are angry. We have a Hot Take on if that's a good thing to do. Twitch added more cumulative sub badges, is that a great idea, or is it going to far? Did they implement it in the right way? Jaku gets salty about it because they talked about that instead of a stealth security update that is confusing the people it's trying to help. Last up they talk a little about Dark Souls and The Happy Hob who got a no hit run on every Soulsborne game just before Sekiro dropped. Congratulations! WE NOW HAVE A PATREON! The 2017 Game Awards were live last week, with Breath of the Wild being crowned the game of the year. How do GrandPOObear, Jaku, and Xwater feel about this decision? They also talk about how they feel about the rest of the nominees for game of the year and debate what exactly makes a game worthy of the title. In addition to the actual awards being given, there were numerous game reveals and trailers shown at the event. There was also a new Mega Man game announced. However, Poo, Jaku, and Xwater aren’t exactly thrilled about the game’s choice of art style. The 3D look in a 2D game has been tried before, how has it typically held up? Poo, Jaku, and Xwater talk about the new Detective Pikachu movie and answer some listener questions about whether or not video games should be considered art. While Xwater is napping, GrandPOOBear and Jaku talk about a new glitch found in Super Mario Odyssey that allows players to easily get 99,999 jumps for the jump-rope minigame. This prompts a discussion on whether or not glitches should be used in speedruns, and how in some cases they make watching a speedrun more interesting and other times less. Streamlabs has acquired Ankhbot and Poo and Jaku talk about the alert systems that they use for their streams. They ask the question: Is the streaming community better or worse off with this? Xwater wakes up and joins Poo and Jaku for some listener questions about donations and about the difference between Eastern and Western speedrunning communities. Welcome back to the Warp World Podcast! GrandPOOBear, Jaku, and Xwater talk about upcoming games like Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back and The Last of Us Part II. They share their stories from TwitchCon and the first ever Mario Maker Colosseum! Not every event is without flaws however, and our hosts talk about how events like these could be improved. Super Mario Odyssey was released over the weekend for the Nintendo Switch and everyone is excited about it. Poo, Jaku, and Xwater have spoiler free discussion about the game and talk about the game’s very few flaws. Jaku and Xwater then have a spoiler filled talk about everything they enjoyed with the game. There will be a spoiler warning before they dive into it so make sure you avoid spoilers if you have not yet played/beaten the game! GrandPOOBear and Jaku are in high spirits after receiving the long awaited SNES Classic and compare this launch to Nintendo’s launch of the NES Classic of last year. They also mention the fact that Nintendo is trying to keep up with demand for the Switch by producing 2 million units each month. For this week’s Hot Take, Poo and Jaku talk about whether difficulty games need to have an easy mode or if you need to be able to beat the game to enjoy the story. Should game developers find a way to be accessible to and playable by everyone? Or are some games just not meant for everyone? Poo and Jaku welcome on Ben Bertoli, author of 101 Video Games to Play Before You Grow Up, to talk about the selection process for games to be included in the book, as well as how being an established freelance writer for sites such as Kotaku and Polygon affects his interactions with his sixth grade students. Poo and Jaku answer a couple listener questions about world records and streaming. You can submit any questions you have to podcast@warp.world for the Ask the Broadcasters segment!
After week’s of talking about how Nintendo is going to undersupply with the SNES Classic edition, GrandPOOBear and Jaku completely change their tune. Nintendo announced that they will be bringing back the NES Classic in 2018, as well as continuing to produce the SNES Classic through next year. This, along with local Targets and Walmarts being shipped 30-50 units on launch day, makes Poo and Jaku feel like consumers won’t be let down this year like they were last year with the NES Classic’s original run. Rockstar Games released the first trailer for Red Dead Redemption 2 and it looks like it’ll be another hit for them after GTA 5’s release 5 years ago. Poo and Jaku talk about what they could learn from GTA’s success and what they hope Rockstar will incorporate into the new game. Poo and Jaku welcome on Nick and Josh, creators of Killer Queen to talk about how they get started with building the hit arcade game, as well as where they see the game going in the future. They talk about their upcoming event, BumbleBash 2, and how they feel the game’s competitive community has evolved with the game. Check out the event on Twitch on October 6th! After missing a week due to being at Smash the Record and being sick, GrandPOOBear is back with Jaku as well as special guest host Xwater. They talk about Smash the Record before talking about another speedrunning event: AGDQ 2018. They talk about the game submission list as well as how tickets for the event have sold out after only 23 hours. They talk about finding NES Golf on the Nintendo Switch and other Easter Eggs found in popular games. SEGA teams up with Hooters to promote Sonic Forces, so Poo, Jaku, and Xwater talk about other bizarre team-ups like this in the history of gaming. This week’s Hot Take is in response to an interview with the developers of PUBG claiming that Epic Games’ should have asked them before making Fortnite Battle Royal since they feel Epic Games’ are copying their use game’s engine and game modes. The questions are: When a game developer makes a game, do they own that kind of game? Do other developers need to ask permission before making a similar game? Poo, Jaku, and Xwater answer some listener questions about speedrunning on emulator or original hardware. his week on the Warp World Podcast, GrandPOOBear and Jaku are joined by Sinister1. Known for his blindfolded runs of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, Sinister now works at Twitch. Poo and Jaku talk with him about how he got into speedrunning and where he found his inspiration for blindfolded runs. They also ask him about how he got his job at Twitch and what working there is like. Poo, Jaku, and Sinister have a Hot Take about controversy surrounding an old speedrunning record of Dragster. The record has been questioned lately by people who have reverse engineered the game to see if his legendary time of 5:51 is actually possible and have concluded it is not, although his time was verified by a couple sources, including Activision, the company who created the game. Poo, Jaku, and Sinister answer whether they feel the record should be counted and give some arguments for both sides. They also answer a viewer question about knowing how to pick the right games to play! You can submit any questions you have to podcast@warp.world for the Ask the Broadcasters segment!
GrandPOOBear and Jaku are back from PAX West and share their experiences trying out different games, like Super Mario Odyssey. From walking 18 miles and waiting in horrendously long lines, they talk about the good and bad of the event and where they see possibilities for improvement in the future. After trying out some Indie games at PAX, Poo and Jaku noticed something interesting about the current lineup of new games: they all either look or play the same. Whereas 5 years ago Indie games were looked to for innovation in gaming, is the genre now stale? Poo talked with Failstream, a Mario Maker streamer who recently managed to upload a level that is arguably the hardest level yet. After managing to beat a level after 500 hours of creating and upload attempts, how did finally accomplishing that feat affect his stream? Check out his level and reaction to clearing the level! Poo and Jaku also answer some listener questions about getting started with your own streaming schedule. They answer the question: When is the best time to stream? Being one of the lucky few who were able to preorder a SNES Classic Edition, Jaku talks to GrandPOOBear about how he was able to secure one. They reference the discussion they had in the first episode of the Warp World Podcast about whether they predicted that Nintendo would be better about having enough consoles for sale than they were with the NES Classic. H3H3 Productions won a lawsuit regarding the use of content created by someone else, which prompted a discussion from Poo and Jaku about what the term “fair use” means to them and how it applies to them as content creators. This led into this week’s Hot Take. After another streamer filed copyright on a video of him getting annoyed by the same players repeatedly, Poo and Jaku talk about whether they felt like that was within his rights to do as well as if they feel he handled the situation well. Our hosts welcome on Hi5T0Safety, a fellow Mario Maker streamer and friend of the show to talk about his background. They dive into how Hi5 got into streaming and what exactly makes his community much more devoted than other communities. Has Hi5 developed a cult? Or is it just a group of friends coming together to watch/play games on the Internet? Poo, Jaku, and Hi5 answer some viewer questions about possible age limits in Speedrunning and whether being good at video games is something that can be learned or if it takes a special talent. In this episode of the Warp World Podcast, GrandPOOBear and Jaku talk about Yo! Noid, Jaku’s new speed game, and speedrunning in general. After running the game for a couple weeks, Jaku found a glitch that would save minutes over the previous record. This, and a new glitch that was found in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, prompted a discussion about whether or not there are any “unbeatable” records. If these glitches found in decades old games are any indication, a game that is considered maxed out may still be able to be beaten a little faster. Barrier skip in Zelda: Wind Waker was one of the most sought after glitches for years and it’s finally been found. Once thought to be an unfindable glitch, it begs the question, what other “unfindable” glitches have yet to be found? In this week’s Hot Take, Poo and Jaku talk about whether Western developers should be taking over long time Eastern games and use the success of last week’s Sonic Mania as a basis for the discussion. To end the show, Poo and Jaku answer some listener questions! You can submit any questions you have to podcast@warp.world for the Ask the Broadcasters segment!
With Sonic Mania releasing this week, GrandPOOBear and Jaku talk about how Sega hired rom hack makers to make a new “classic” Sonic game and how perhaps Nintendo should do the same. Nintendo has always seemed out of touch with the modern gaming industry, but that may be changing. Nintendo has set the world record for a stage in Splatoon 2, so hopefully that means they are going to start embracing the speedrunning community. The only other example of Nintendo partaking in speedrunning is this incredible five person run through a level in New Super Mario Brothers. U that they released a few years ago. Nintendo could also be opening their IPs to the world following Mario + Rabbids for the Nintendo Switch. Developed by Ubisoft, this could be a sign of things to come in terms of Nintendo collaborating with their characters. In wake of No Man’s Sky’s new update, can anything bring people back to the game, or do people feel too burned after the game’s disappointing launch? Also, check out this video of Jurrasic Park in No Man’s Sky! In this week’s Hot Take, Poo and Jaku address the question: Is it time for eSports to be an Olympic Sport? There are pros and cons for this argument and as gamers themselves, our hosts are able to give a unique perspective on the issue. Poo and Jaku close the show by answering some of those listener questions! You can submit any questions you have to podcast@warp.world for the Ask the Broadcasters segment!
This time around on the Warp World Podcast, GrandPOOBear and Jaku talk with TheDragonFeeney about how she got started with streaming and how streaming is different for her as a woman versus a man. Feeney talks about who she’s looked up to as she tried to build her own community, as well as how she deals with viewers who harass her in chat. This week’s Hot Take is about possible unions in the Super Smash Bros. community after a tournament has still failed to pay competitors seven months after the event. TheDragonFeeney is a good friend of the show! Support her by checking her out on Twitch and her new YouTube channel! He’s recorded in multiple countries and cities so far, Jaku joins GrandPOOBear this week from a closet in his Las Vegas Hotel. Jaku is in Las Vegas for Defcon 2017, the annual hacking conference. He and Poo talk about everything that was going on there before talking about Pokémon Go Fest issues and how Niantic handled these issues. Nintendo has recently filed tradmark application for a Nintendo 64 controller leading some to think it’s because they are working on the Nintendo 64 Classic Edition, similar to the NES Classic and the coming SNES Classic. What games would you like to see on the 64 Classic? Poo and Jaku give their thoughts, let us know what you’d like to see out of the 64 Classic! After fans feel burned by Mighty No. 9’s Kickstarter rewards, it begs the question: should gamers keep on supported concepts for games? Or should we wait until we have more evidence that it’ll be worth our time and money? This week’s Hot Take answers just that. GrandPOOBear and Jaku talk about Mega Man Maker after one week with the game, as well as the recently announced Mega Man movie. Is Mega Man a character that would translate well to a movie? Or would it be another failure for video game movies? Poo and Jaku give their thoughts, as well as offer a different solution that might work better for the franchise. Evo 2017 came to a close last week, and it prompted Poo and Jaku to think about the future of Smash Bros. Should Nintendo port the series’ most popular game, Super Smash Brothers Melee, to the Switch, or should they move the franchise forward with a brand new game? This week’s Hot Take discussion was about whether or not Dr. Disrespect’s ban from Battlegrounds was justified as well as whether or not game developers should publicly comment on bans/timeouts they give. This episode introduces the first ever Jaku Explains segment. Given his technical background, Jaku gives his take on a new tech issue, and this week’s issue is AI. After Elon Musk’s warning about AI and his urging to create laws about what AI can/cannot be programmed to do, Jaku and Poo have a discussion about the current situation and whether or not AI is going to be a threat in the near future. GrandPOOBear and Jaku welcome their first guest to the show, Ryukahr! Ryu joins Poo and Jaku to talk about the differences between streaming on YouTube and streaming on Twitch, and given Ryu’s background as a YouTube streamer, he’s asked why he chose that platform over Twitch. They talk about the brand new fan-made Mega-Man Maker, and compare it to Super Mario Maker. For this week’s Hot Take, they talk about using save states while playing difficult Mario rom hacks. A save state is creating a restore point at anywhere in the game, so you could use it to practice a very hard jump, cut out wait times, as well as to save all progress through a level which negates the effect of dying. Poo, Jaku, And Ryu give their opinions on whether people should use them while learning to play a game. They also answer a fan question about reproduction cartridges to play fan made games and the moral ambiguity surrounded them.
Join your hosts GrandPOOBear and Jaku from Summer Games Done Quick 2017 (SGDQ)! Poo and Jaku want you to know what really happens at SGDQ, as it’s not only what you see on stream. From escape rooms to playing Mario in the practice room with friends, there’s a lot going on that you wouldn’t be aware of if you don’t attend the event. They also talk about some of the big events like the Super Mario Relay (which Poo was apart of), as well as how the setup for the runs can affect the rest of the week if something goes wrong. They dove into what to expect if you are going to SGDQ (Summer Games Done Quick) which is a speedrunning event, as well as their first experiences with the event. They spoke about the new subscription service for the Twitch Affiliate program.
