For this episode we will explore the dramatic history surrounding a beloved Black Madonna of the Greek Diaspora, Panagia Soumela. Join us for a very special episode as we commemorate Oxi Day – the historic moment on October 28, 1940, when Greece famously defied Mussolini's ultimatum, shouting a resounding “No!” to fascist occupation. This act of defiance marked Greece's entry into WWII, leaving a profound mark on world history, as Greece's resistance slowed Axis powers and inspired global hope. Special, expert guest Greek Consul General, Yiannis Mallikourtis, brings a behind the scenes look into the history of the moment, while WWII aficionado, Nick Andriotakis, shares both the global and Australian reaction to the act of defiance. A must listen for all history buffs and members of the Greek diaspora. This episode is proudly brought to you by:St Nicholas Senior Care Centre: https://acare.au/Edgility: https://www.edgility.com.au/The Greek Providore: https://thegreekprovidore.com.au/Send us a text Support the showEmail us at ouzotalk@outlook.comSubscribe to our Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3n85GSdk5Q&t=6sFollow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OuzoTalkFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ouzo_talk/
We welcome Alexandros & Christophoros to the show! They are the founders of To Kinima Tou Ethnous, a Greek Diaspora organization that seeks to leverage Greece's greatest natural resource, its people, to influence Greek politics and involve the diaspora in the political process of Greece. Alexandros is a leading voice of Greek Diaspora politics and a practicing Orthodox Christian. He studies political science and Russian language at Southern Methodist University. He has always been politically minded and excels at public speaking and Greek Diaspora outreach, regularly attending Greek heritage and church events in Dallas, TX and in his hometown of Seattle, WA. Benis founded KTE in January 2024 in response to the massive political and cultural upheaval being experienced in Greece and hopes to bring his project to willing and able Greeks living abroad to return the nation of his ancestors to its once and future glory. Christophoros is a former editor-in-chief of his college newspaper and studied Greek history and language at Loyola Marymount University before taking over all media responsibilities for KTE in the summer of 2024. Despite being Alexandros' older brother, Christophoros believes Alexandros is a greater thinker and public speaker for what KTE intends to achieve, which is a return to traditionalism and Orthodox spirituality for the betterment of Greek society. Christophoros currently runs KTE's social media channels and edits all articles and press releases seen on the website. Check out their website: https://www.kinimatouethnous.com/ See more on GreekAF!

Georgia and Turkey, two countries with a significant Greek presence throughout history.
Evidence of Alexander the Great's rule are still visible in India. However, the Greek community is scattered throughout the country, with little means of intercommunication. Similiarly in Kazakhstan, the 12,000 Greek expatriates struggle to maintain an ethnic identity - Αν και η ιστορία χωρών της Ασίας, όπως η Ινδία και το Καζακστάν, έχει χαραχθεί από το ελληνικό στοιχείο, ο αριθμός των ομογενών και οι δίαυλοι επικοινωνίας μεταξύ τους συρρικνώνονται χρόνο με το χρόνο.
In the 19th and 20th Centuries, the waves of Greek migration to Latin America numbered in the thousands. However, this is not the case anymore.
We journey to the USA and Canada. While Greeks have long migrated to both countries the Greek diaspora still face significant challenges - Στο έβδομο επεισόδιο της σειράς μας: «Πολλές φωνές, μία καρδιά», ταξιδεύουμε για πρώτη φορά στην Αμερικανική Ήπειρο, και συγκεκριμένα στις ΗΠΑ και τον Καναδά.
Austria and Switzerland might not be regarded as the most popular destinations for post-war Greek migrants, but these two countries have been a second home for certain historical Greek figures, especially prior to Greek independence.
The Fall of Constantinople in 1453 and the Ottoman rule over Greece, caused hundreds of Greeks to migrate to Great Britain or Germany. There, they built strong communities around their language and religion.Great Britain and Germany are once again popular destinations for Greek migrants seeking better career prospects. While these communities flourish, there are often challenges in preserving their ethnic identity and culture.
