In episode 147, we're excited to welcome Jon Trask, CEO of Dimitra, an AgTech company on a mission to connect smallholder farmers with easy-to-use technology to increase yields, reduce costs, and mitigate risks. We discuss how emerging technologies such as blockchain, AI, and IoT devices, can help smallholder farmers grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods, how blockchain can improve monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) by equipping farmers with important data, and much more.--Three Key Takeaways--One of the biggest unlocks of blockchain is ensuring true traceability of products, allowing consumers to see every step of that product's journey from point of harvest to consumption. This will be a gamechanger for socially conscious consumerism and building sustainable supply chains.Blockchain alone won't solve the challenges faced by smallholder farmers and must be leveraged alongside other emerging technologies. In the case of Dimitra, blockchain is built into their platform in conjunction with AI, IoT devices, satellite imaging, genomics, and more.Smallholder farmers are vital to a sustainable and thriving planet. Not only do they play an important role in global food chains but are also vital to local economies and ecosystems. By improving the lives of farmers, it will lead to improved economies and a healthier environment.--Full shownotes with links available at--https://www.cryptoaltruism.org/blog/crypto-altruism-podcast-episode-147-dimitra-empowering-smallholder-farmers-with-ai-blockchain-based-agtech-solutions--Support us with a Fiat or Crypto contribution--Learn more at cryptoaltruism.org/supportus--This episode was recorded on Zencastr!--Interested in starting your own podcast? I discuss some events and circumstances that led to pteridomania (“fern fever”), as well as ways in which the magical fern was incorporated into the everyday lives of millions of Victorians. ***** References American Fern Society. https://www.amerfernsoc.org Brain, Jessica. “The Wardian Case.” https://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Wardian-Case/ Britannica. “Fern.” https://www.britannica.com/plant/fern Castelow, Ellen. “Pteridomania – Fern Madness.” https://www.historic-uk.com/CultureUK/Pteridomania-Fern-Madness/ Green, Cynthia. “When Ferns Were All The Rage.” https://daily.jstor.org/when-ferns-were-all-the-rage/ Hamilton, E.L. “Victorian Ladies used Ferns as a Covert way to Express Passion and Desire.” https://www.thevintagenews.com/2018/05/29/victorian-ferns/?safari=1 Kingsley, Charles. Dimitra Skandali grew up on Paros, a Greek island in the Aegean Sea. She says the island has shaped the way she sees the world. Dimitra combines traditional fiber arts like crochet, embroidery, and weaving with sea grasses and beach trash as a way to focus attention on the ocean and the environmental issues that impact its health and sustainability. While her work is rooted in her relationship with the Aegean Sea, Dimitra also has ties to the Pacific Ocean, having spent almost a decade in California. By using beach trash and natural materials she explores sustainability and other environmental issues like ocean pollution. Her installations, which have been curated in more than 90 solo and group exhibitions worldwide, allude to increasing environmental risks alongside human migrations and struggles with identity.

This is a special weekend series ‘Student Voices' where I share my conversations with the members of the Iana Dance Club about life, dance and training. Some of participants are belly dance beginners, some are professionals, but all of us have one thing in common: we all remain being students of dance. :)Enjoy this inspiring conversation with Dimitra where she shares her belly dance transformations with us:Before: - Resisted to attend a class because of the fear of embarrassment in a group of unknown people.- Didn't know how to practice on her own. Had unrealistic expectations regarding how her dance should look like.- ‘When we were learning new movement and I couldn't do it right away, it was blocking me. I was not able to move at all.'Now: 'With time I realized that it's ok if I don't get something right away. I must do those mistakes, and that's how I will learn. Seeing the progress in my dance was the moment of feeling almost unstoppable.''"Belly dance makes me feel free and connected to the feminine flow. It became a big and integral part of my routine. I see it as a self-love ritual."_DimitraShow Notes to this episode:Find information on how you can support Ukraine and Ukrainian belly dancers HERE.Check Dimitra's community page at the Iana Dance Club website.
