Greg Judy is a Missouri-based grass farmer who has developed and propelled the art of so-called "mob-grazing," an amazing phenomenon. He taught a crowd at the 2013 Acres U.S.A. annual conference about his techniques to bring about an explosion of life in the soil, and how his techniques can help any farmer rescue damaged soil. He firmly believes in multi-purpose livestock, not just for meat and milk, but for how they can contribute and help maintain a healthy soil for other crops. "With every new species we bring to the farm, it supports 8 more who can thrive. That's promoting biodiversity"Let's learn about Greg JudyGreg was born in 1960 on a dairy farm in northern Minnesota. His family moved to Missouri in 1966, mainly to escape the cold long wintersGreg Judy started milking the family cow at 7, a routine he continued until leaving home after high school. Providing fresh milk for the family fueled his early passion for farming, creating a lasting connection to the land and its rhythms1993-95, Greg acquired 205 acres, combining his Uncle and Dad's farms at $350-$400 per acre. A 10% down payment connected the plots, incorporating challenges with neglected land, cedars, and erosion. Relying on his town job to meet farm payments without starvingWith many challenges on his 200-acre farm, Greg encountered a farmer with premier pasture on 160 acres during a drought. Introduced to Management Intensive Grazing, Greg enrolled in a grazing school and subscribed to Stockman Grass Farmer. Needing a change to avoid lifelong debtDuring the 3 day grazing school, Greg slept in his camper to save money. Trapped by floods one night, he found high ground and camped, unbothered by the constant rain. He learned about forages, fences, and herd health. Eager to apply newfound knowledge, he hurried homeAllan Nation warned about the cattle crash and despite initially planning to increase his herd, Greg sold everything. In February 1996, he swiftly bought back all his cows shortly afterward, making strategic moves considering the drop in cow prices, actually making a farm paymentHowever, that summer Greg faced a another blow - discovering his wife's manic depression, leading to divorce. The financial strain intensified as divorce and farm payments depleted all available cash and cattle. Greg felt hopeless and looked like the farm was finishedGreg wrote up a contract to graze rodeo horses and that covered the six months of farm payments. Then, another Allan Nation article shifted his perspective. Rather than just land ownership, focus on making a living from the land. He started looking for unused pastures to leaseNo ownership stress, Greg sells his management skills, developing idle land for grass gain on stockers. This let Greg pay off his farm and house in 3 years. He faced financial struggles, now shares experiences to guide young graziers, emphasizing the pitfalls of land ownership Greg Judy now owns 4 farms & leases 12 more1600 acres total900 is timber700 is grassGreen Pastures Farm offers pastured pigs, sheep, chickens, grassfed beef, shiitake mushrooms, some lumber, & furnitureGreg uses "mob grazing" trying to emulate the natural systems of the prairie when the buffalo roamed2 mobs, about 300 animals in a mob. Rotational grazing is not a new concept. It's been around since creation. How to mimic nature and utilize these methods on a homestead has been taught very well by people such as Joel Salatin and Greg Judy. After years of studying, implementing, making adjustments, and narrowing down how to make these methods work on a smaller scale, we've finally found a flow that's making huge strides to improve the pastures on our homestead.Five years ago, the same amount of pasture couldn't even sustain four sheep. Now it can sustain a dairy cow, eight sheep, 70 laying hens, over 400 meat chickens, and some pigs each year.So how do we take these rotational grazing methods and scale them down for the small homesteader (or even someone raising backyard chickens)? I'm glad you asked! Check out today's new Pantry Chat here: https://homesteadingfamily.com/rotational-grazing-for-the-small-homestead/

In today's episode we re-cap the takeaways from the 2-day grazing school I attended at Greg Judy's Green Pastures Farm in Clark, Missouri. The school was awesome, with great instruction from Greg and his co-instructor Abram Bowerman of Still Waters Farm in Spickard, MO. Intensively managed ruminant livestock are the tool for building soil rapidly, at scale over broad acre landscapes. The benefits are too numerous to enumerate here, but suffice to say if you have even a couple of acres, you need to get livestock on them and you need to move them. Anything less and it'll be like trying to homestead with one hand tied behind your back - so much more work or damn near impossible! When it comes to building a fertile, rich and productive soil bank, there is nothing that can compete with well-managed livestock. And building soil is fundamentally what sovereign homestead is all about. If you don't have living soil, you don't have many choices available to you. “I didn't have mechanical background, I didn't grow up fixing tractors. I had never driven a tractor. I wasn't good with equipment. Grazing was very approachable. It just really appealed to me. You're outside, you're working with the environment. It just grabbed me really fast.” Jascha Pick is a sheep farmer based in Northern Vermont, who didn't set out to be a farmer but caught the farming bug. He fell in love with farming, and especially with grazing. He's used a lot of creativity to get started, including a trip to New Zealand, grazing plenty of back yards, and living in a tiny house on leased land. When you have an animal that eats grass, then you as a farmer have a big advantage. Grass is free.   You don't have to buy it, and depending on where you live you might not have to water it. So your input costs on your end product, are low. But not all grass is created equal.  If you don't have a lot of grass or grass year round, then you might find yourself in a situation where you need to purchase hay, which drives input costs up. It's in your interest to have the healthiest most productive pastures as possible.  As a farmer, you are both a manager of the animals and the grass to help avoid this problem. It's practices like mob grazing that lead to improved soils which can sustain more life, for longer.   Poor practices can lead to the degradation of land, and conversely good practices can lead to a dramatic improvement in the land, soil, and pasture. And improvements can be truly dramatic. Take someone like Greg Judy for example.  Greg grazes using planned high density grazing.  Putting a lot of animal weight on a small piece of land for a short period of time. Since adopting that system his grazing ratio has changed from 4.5 acres per animal unit (AU=1,000 lb.) to 2.2 acres per AU and forage production has doubled. Judy is using the extra forage to expand his cow herd for a grass-fed beef business, and he has added 300 head of hair sheep. Judy manages the livestock on 900 acres (300 acres owned and 600 acres leased.) “This reduction in grazing acres per AU is like having another 600-acre farm, and we don’t even have to pay additional land taxes. In our area, 600 acres is worth $1.8 million,” Judy says. More grass, means more animals, and no extra land needed. As Greg said, it's like getting another farm for free. It's all about building soil and that's the focus of today's episode, the first in a multi-part episode series on building pasture. READY TO START YOUR OWN LIVESTOCK FARM? Farming... is it expensive to start, or not? A lot of people want to get into farming, but they stall out when it comes to the money side of things. The common cause of that stall out is land. Land is expensive to purchase. So most people immediately dismiss the idea of farming because they can't afford land. But people like Greg Judy, Joel Salatin, and us on this show, have shown that you don't need to own land to farm. There's a lot of land available to farm. Land you don't need to own, and land that you can gain access to through options like leasing.. If you can lease land either for free or inexpensively and if you are in a market where you can move product, then the potential upside to small scale farming is pretty attractive given the low start up costs and low infrastructure requirements? How low? Very low compared to other businesses. In his book Curtis gives an initial start-up estimate for a 1/4 acre farm at $7k to $17k. Curtis started his farm with just $7k. That's $7k that buys equipment and infrastructure which is portable and resellable. In good markets, the risk reward of small scale farming is usually favorable because small scale market farming startup costs are very low compared to many business out there. Yet, despite the minimal start up costs, the costs are still prohibitive, or at least perceived to be prohibitive by some people. Given that we'll dig into the farm start up numbers and see where costs can be cut and what costs are just unavoidable. And we'll also bring in some rationale to these numbers discussing why certain items are worth the cost, and why others aren't. Today we'll begin a multi-part series discussing the minimum that you could spend to start a farm, and we will begin with the base principles, what are the things that you need to think about before you spend any money, that's coming up on Season Two Episode 22 of The Urban Farmer. This episode is the reading of the blog post, Soil Life Exploding At Judy Farms, written by Greg Judy. "2010 was our fourth complete year of Holistic High Density Planned Grazing on Judy farms. The last six months on Judy farms have been a real eye opener. We have seen some unique circumstances that have never been witnessed before on our farms. Some of the numbers and sights that we are seeing are going to be hard for you to believe. That is fine, skepticism is good. But………we now have much more hard data that has been collected from permanent transects on our farms. Before we dive into these latest happenings, I want to cover where we started at and the progression we have seen over the last four years. This will give you a time table of where we started at and the length of time that elapsed to the present." To read the full post visit permaculturevoices.com/119

Greg Judy will be one of the speakers at PV3 in March 2016.Learn more about PV3 at permaculturevoices.com/pv3. In the late 90's Greg was down to $9 in the bank. The way that he was farming, wasn't working. Greg was grazing cattle using conventional methods at the time. And the costs were killing him, or should I say the debt was killing him. Cattle loans, equipment loans, feed costs, seed costs, and other input costs drawing too much away from his top line, thereby shrinking his bottom line. With an unprofitable farming operation and $9 left in the bank, Greg had two choices, roll over and quite, or try something new and effectively start over. With gritty determination, a passion for cattle, and a need to grow more grass, Greg dropped all of his conventional ways and began grazing cattle that he didn't own, on land that he didn't own, and with less inputs. The transition was nothing less than remarkable. Within a few years Greg had paid off all of his debt including his farm. He was adding new leases to his farm portfolio, and lessors were so happy they were granting him lifetime leases. But it wasn't just Greg's bottom line that was benefitting, the soil was as well. Greg's high intensity grazing was speeding up the growth of grass. And with more grass, comes more cattle. All without adding more land. Greg's methods have been widely successful and used for the last 15 plus years. And it all started when Greg's back was up against the wall and he decided to let the cows work for him, instead of working for the cows. If it ever feels like things just aren't working, then look no further than Greg Judy as a remarkable example of someone who had the passion, the grit, and the wherewithal to make a change when he could have easily just quit. In this talk Greg Judy talk covers the steps used to find leased land and build a multi-species grazing operation from scratch. Livestock can be a blessing or a curse. It's all in the management. With smart management livestock become a multiplier on the landscape. By using a variety of livestock to manage the forages it allows better utilization of plants. Harvesting much more solar energy through the wide selection of different plant leaves. This is a message that Greg Judy has come to learn, live by, and not preach. Greg's story is remarkable. This is the full presentation from one of Greg Judy's talks from PV1. Greg and his wife Jan are farmers from Rucker, Missouri. On their farm, Green Pastures Farm, they raise cattle, sheep, horses, goats, pigs, and chickens on grass pasture in balance with nature. They don't use any antibiotics, no hormone implants, and no grain. The livestock graze rich pasture 100% of their lives. They use rotational grazing on their farm, which means they are constantly moving the livestock to fresh rested pasture to graze and let the previous grazed pasture rest so that it can grow back undisturbed. Their pastures are rich in clovers and many species of natural grasses. They don't use any chemical fertilizers or herbicides on any of the pastures. Large populations of birds, ants, worms, butterflies, spiders & bees build soil and control pests. Show Notes: www.permaculturevoices.com/45
