It's Monday, January 27th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian Muslims killed 5 Christians and displaced 1,500 others Boko Haram, the Muslim terrorist group, is escalating attacks on Nigerian Christian communities in Chibok, Borno State, displacing more than 4,000 Christians in recent days, reports International Christian Concern. In a series of coordinated raids, Boko Haram targeted the villages of Christians, burned homes, torching churches, and killing five people. During the most recent attack on January 20th, terrorists displaced more than 1,500 residents. They targeted Christians in these raids, intimidating them and demanding they convert to Islam or face death. The violence destroyed the church called Ekklesiyar Yan'uwa, and resulted in the loss of livestock, food supplies, and livelihoods. According to Open Doors, Nigeria is the seventh most dangerous country worldwide for Christians to live. Trump defunded Planned Parenthood International While on Air Force One on Friday, President Donald Trump signed the Mexico City policy which prohibits American tax dollars from being used to promote or provide abortions overseas, reports LifeNews.com. The move defunded two major abortion chains of hundreds of millions of American tax dollars. The International Planned Parenthood Federation alone estimated a $100 million loss from its budget. Vice President Vance speaks out for unborn life and pro-life activists On Friday, Vice President J.D. Vance spoke in person at the 52nd annual March for Life in Washington D.C. and then marched with tens of thousands of pro-life Americans. VANCE: “We march to protect the unborn and live out the sacred truth that every single child is a miracle and a gift from God. It is a blessing to know the truth, and the truth is that unborn life is worthy of protection.” And Vice President Vance explained how things would be different under the leadership of President Donald Trump. He addressed the Biden administration's obsession with imprisoning pro-life Americans who participated in non-violent civil disobedience much like many did during the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s. VANCE: “With his return to office, no longer will the federal government direct FBI raids on the homes of people like, Mark Houck, and other Catholic and Christian activists who are fighting for the unborn every single day. And no longer will our government throw pro-life protesters and activists, elderly grandparents, or anybody else in prison. It stopped on Monday, and we're not going to let it come back to this country.” Lila Rose: Defund Planned Parenthood of America and abolish abortion Lila Rose, the founder of Live Action, addressed the March for Life crowd this past Friday in our nation's capitol. ROSE: “We must also speak the truth to our elected officials. We can start by demanding that they defund Planned Parenthood. (cheers) It's time!” (cheers) Isaiah 59:7 says, “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” Rose continued. ROSE:  “And most importantly, we must urge our elected officials to abolish abortion. (cheers) Abolishing abortion is the most important human rights cause of our time. One million of our unborn brothers and sisters are killed every year by abortion.” Pro-life rescuer Joan Bell to Trump: Protect babies from conception On January 24th, newly pardoned pro-life activist Joan Andrews Bell, age 75, joined the tens of thousands of pro-lifers in Washington, D.C., for the 52nd annual March for Life. Bell was freed from prison following President Trump's official pardon of the 23 pro-life rescuers in jail. John-Henry Westen, the founder of LifeSiteNews.com, interviewed her at the March for Life. WESTEN: “Joan, you just got out of prison now. President Trump gave you and the other 22 a pardon. What is your message for President Trump right now?” BELL: “Number one, thank you with all my heart. We trust that God is going to keep guiding you, keep bringing you closer and closer to the total truth that you need to defend every human life from the very moment of conception to natural death. And Monica Miller has a great book In The Beginning: [Critical Lessons for Our World from the First Three Chapters of Genesis]. Anyone who reads that will have to say, of course. In Scripture [Jeremiah 1:5] ‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.'” Pete Hegseth confirmed as Sec of Defense thanks to J.D. Vance This past Friday, the U.S. Senate confirmed Pete Hegseth as the new Secretary of Defense in a late-night session that came down to a tie-breaking vote from Vice President J.D. Vance after GOP Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky voted no, reports The Epoch Times. VANCE: “On this vote, the Yeas are 50 and the Nays are 50. The Senate being equally divided, the Vice President votes in the affirmative and the nomination is confirmed.” President Trump's nominee was initially deadlocked in a 50-50 vote. That capped a contentious confirmation process in which Hegseth faced questions about his views on women serving in combat, as well as allegations of alcoholism, sexual assault, and financial mismanagement at two veteran nonprofit groups. The vice president is the president of the Senate and has the sole power to cast a tie-breaking vote when necessary. Kristi Noem confirmed as Secretary of Homeland Security On Saturday, the Senate approved the nomination of South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem to lead the Department of Homeland Security, reports The Hill.com. The 59-34 vote to confirm Noem puts her at the center of an administration focused heavily on immigration. Seven Democrats voted with Republicans to confirm her. Senators John Fetterman (PA), Tim Kaine (VA), Andy Kim (NJ), Gary Peters (MI), Jeanne Shaheen (NH), Maggie Hassan (NH) and Elissa Slotkin (MI). Solar-charging backpacks help African kids read at night And finally, a local entrepreneur in Tanzania is clearing two hurdles in one leap by transforming old cement bags into backpacks that include a small solar panel to power a reading light, reports Good News Network. Clearing municipal waste and helping rural children study after dark for just $4-8 per bag is impressive. Soma Bags employs 85 rural workers to satisfy a demand for 13,000 backpacks a month. They can't meet it, but they do their best. This backpack craze is all due to Mr. Innocent James who remembers studying for school by the light of a kerosene lantern. James' solution was inspired by a university professor he met.  The man carried around a solar panel to charge his phone sewn into the fabric of his jacket, giving James the idea to sew cheap, flexible solar panels onto the outside of bags to power a reading light. This episode is part of our Going Green/Staying Green Series.       Whatever generation you are a part of, you look around you at your environment, the land and nature around you (even if you live in a city) and define your relationship with it. Do you like what you see? What's challenging in it? What can you do? Do you take part of making it beautiful, of keeping it clean/sustainable, part of the caring for the plants and animals? There are generational differences to these questions but let's look at what can unite us around it. Young activists are stepping up to meet the challenges of climate change and sustainability and today we are chatting with The Youth Environmental Action Summit (YEAS)  a community-based environmental education program here on the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.  YEAS's mission is to support young people in taking action on hyper-local environmental issues and to build up their capacity to lead and make the change they want to see. Each spring YEAS hosts an annual Youth Summit that brings together about 150 students, supports a year-round youth leadership program called the YEAS Ambassadors, and provides tools, resources, partnerships, and funds to support student-led action projects. Plus performances by Fenix Youth Project Poetry Performance from the No, I Know Podcast Live Event in October 2021. All other Music and Lyrics written by James Harrell and Ilyana Kadushin.

The is no marijuana induced psychosis epidemic in Florida 2. The main problem in legal states involve recreational users eating too much THC in edibles without understanding what they are getting into. Even so, there is hardly a psychosis epidemic from edibles. And much more importantly to this law, there is NO psychosis epidemic from inhalation (vaping or smoking). 3. In Florida, patients have twice a year doctor consultations to help prevent accidental misuse of marijuana. In addition, these visits act as a safety shield requiring patients to speak directly to their doctors. Any signs of psychosis should be evident to a physician over the course of 15 minute consultation. 4. The have been no in depth studies comparing psychological effects of varying marijuana potencies. 5. The Lancet study (the one that Ray Rodrigues uses as justification for his amendment) dealt with populations that had certain markers that predisposed them to psychosis. For example, compared to the control group, a higher percentage of the test group were racial minorities, unemployed, of lower education and had higher previous usage rates of stimulants, hallucinogens and ketamine. In addition, that study was a statistical meta-analysis of many other studies all with various original purposes, none were designed to compare psychological effects of varying THC concentrations in whole flower marijuana. The conclusion of the Lancet study was that "more research is necessary" https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(19)30048-3/fulltext30048-3/fulltext) 6. When scientist's said fracking in Florida's unusual geology could lead to problems, Ray Rodrigues supported a bill having the State pay for a study into the impact of fracking. If the State is truly concerned with 15% flower causing hypothetical problems for patients, in the absence of a current crisis, the State should commission of study or multiple studies through the psychology and psychiatry departments at State's research universities. This would be a win/win, Florida's Universities could be at the forefront of medical marijuana research and patients would gain valuable information. 7. The bill does not define how to measure 10%. There is no precise measurement of THC in flower as it can vary from plant to plant. Percentage also varies depending on moisture content. The bill does State what condition that plant must be in when it is measured. The rush to create a bill, leaves open the possibility of much manipulation... which will in turn hurt patients since they might not no how much the product has change since the time the product was measured. If such a limit is adopted by the State, growers and producers should be involved in setting up standardized processes. 8. The limit will move people out of the medical system and back into the black market. 9. The limit is an arbitrary attack on patients that use whole flower. There are no comparable limits for concentrates, oil, pill or any other form of marijuana. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/iamcannabissativapodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/iamcannabissativapodcast/support

In this episode of STEM-Talk, we talk to one of our own senior research scientists, Dr. Yorick Wilks, renowned for his work in natural language processing. Wilks is also a professor of artificial intelligence at the University of Sheffield in England, and senior research fellow at the Oxford Internet Institute at Balliol College. A “war baby” born in London in the midst of the Second World War, Yorick was sent away to school due to the bombings. He excelled and went to Cambridge, where he studied with Margaret Masterman, a protégé of philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Yorick first came to America—L.A. in the 1960s—on a one-year Air Force Research Grant. Yeas later, he moved to Stanford University’s AI Lab, where he worked with John McCarthy, one of the founders of Artificial Intelligence. Yorick’s research interests have been vast and rich, including machine translation, translating, understanding and extracting meaning from language, belief representation and human and machine communication. He has authored 14 books and many more papers, and has been the recipient of numerous awards, including, in 2008, the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL) Lifetime Achievement Award. Yorick also speaks several languages, including Swahili and Japanese. Yorick is a senior research scientist at IHMC’s Ocala, Florida facility where he was interviewed for this podcast. STEM-Talk Host Dawn Kernagis and IHMC Associate Director and senior research scientist Bonnie Dorr—who is also a leading expert in natural language processing—conduct this rich interview, full of both historical insight and wisdom about the future of AI.  Yorick also spends much of his time in Oxford, England, where he lives with his wife and two beloved dogs, an Italian greyhound and a German Sheppard. 1:07: Ken mentions that Yorick was an easy selection by “a unanimous vote by the double secret selection committee.” He calls Yorick a pioneering researcher, mentor and a raconteur of the first order. 1:31: Ken continues: “Yorick was on the ground floor when AI and the Internet were in nascent stages of development.” 2:30: Dawn reads an iTunes 5-star review of STEM-Talk from “Love the ocean”: “I just listened to Joan Vernikos’ STEM-Talk, and I am convinced that I am on my way to living a healthier life from the changes I’ve made incorporating what she said in her talk. What an inspiration she is, and how proud I am to have met her at NASA, where I currently work, and know that even after her NASA days, she continues to research and publish. STEM-Talk truly finds those brilliant and interesting people and encourages in-depth discussions. Continuous five-stars.” 4:30: Dawn welcomes Yorick and Bonnie. 4:58: Yorick describes upbringing: “I was a war baby, from a poor, working class family.” His parents worked in aircraft factories and sent him to school outside of London because of the bombings. 5:48: He got a scholarship to a good school; and another scholarship to attend Cambridge. “In some ways, I escaped my upbringing completely.” 6:00: Yorick won a school prize at age 16, and asked for Aristotle’s Metaphysics. That marked his first interest in philosophy. At Cambridge, he studied math and physics; he changed to philosophy after a year. 6:50: He considers himself in “apostolic succession from Wittgenstein” via Margaret Masterman, his philosophy tutor at college. “She wasn’t good at teaching; but she was a genius, a guru.” 7:56: Wittgenstein didn’t like women in his classes; he didn’t like ugly people, Yorick says. “But she hung in there, and Wittgenstein was the biggest influence in her life.” 8:22: Wittgenstein thought understanding the world meant understanding language…But he wasn’t anti-science at all. He was an engineer by background. He thought how we saw the world was determined by language. 9:10: Masterman thought she was carrying out a Wittgenstein philosophy, but with new technology (computers.)

Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Susan Abbott Today's guest(s): Fr. Roger Landry, executive editor of The Anchor, the newspaper of the Fall River diocese; and Gregory Tracy, managing editor of The Pilot, the newspaper of the Boston archdiocese Some of the stories discussed on this show will be available on The Pilot's and The Anchor's websites on Friday morning. Please check those sites for the latest links. Today's topics: Religious womens' jubilee; bishops mobilize against contraception; Protecting priests; incardination and the case of Fr. Pavone Summary of today's show: Scot and Susan discuss the news of the week with Greg and Fr. Roger including the dispute between Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life and his bishop; the US bishops mobilizing Catholics against violation of conscience in healthcare legislation; Fr. Roger's editorial on protecting priests from false accusations; and women religious in Boston celebrating jubilees and over 5,000 years of combined service to the Church. 1st segment: Scot caught up with Susan this Thursday. She's off and running with the new school year and so has religious education. This Sunday is Catechetical Sunday and most parishes will begin their programs on Sunday. Parish catechists are frontline apostles, as John Paul II called them. Scot said every parish needs more catechists and listeners should consider helping out. 2nd segment: Scot and Susan welcome Greg and Fr. Roger. Scot said the centerfold in this week's Pilot is about religious sisters who are celebrating their jubilee anniversaries. Greg said it's a joyous celebration to celebrate their 25th, 50th, 60th, and even 75th anniversaries of religious life. All combined all these women have given more than 5,000 years of service! The Mass took place at St. Theresa of Avila in West Roxbury, which is Susan's parish. She said it's a wonderful celebration. The oldest jubilarian was Sister Declan Sullivan, 93, at 75 years of service and she said it was one of the most beautiful celebrations she's had. Bishop Dooher celebrated the Mass and praised the sisters for their service and witness. He also connected the celebration to the commemoration of 9/11 which occurred on the same day. Sister Sean Mayer of the Daughters of St. Paul was the youngest at 45 with 25 years of service. She entered the order at 14 and professed at 20. Fr. Roger said in an age where so few make commitments and where those who do don't keep their word, these women who've kept these commitments are a sign of fidelity and what God is saying to us through them about the great mystery of their vocation and God's great faithfulness to them. It is a sign that God calls each of us in our own way and their vocations are signs to us of our own eternal vocation to be with God in heaven. The Pilot article on Friday will have a complete list of the names of the jubilarians. 3rd segment: The US bishops are asking all Catholics to mobilize to contact Congress and the Dept of Health and human Services to guard our consciences on issues of contraception. Greg said the new healthcare reform law pushed by the Obama administration, health care plans must cover the abortifacient morning-after pill and contraceptives. While there is a conscience protection clause in the regulations, it is so narrowly written that Catholic hospitals, schools, and charities would be required to pay for these drugs and sterilizations. There is a public comment period for these regulations that expires at the end of this month. The bishops are urging people to register their objections at . Susan said we have a moral obligation to act and to let our elected officials know how we feel about this. She noted that antibiotics aren't being made free or children's vitamins, but these morally objectionable drugs and services are. Scot said parish bulletin announcements have been sent to parishes. Greg said that if these rules get passed, church organizations may be forced to stop offering health care benefits to employees and their families. Fr. Roger said as Christians we have to vote. He said not to worry about exactly how you word your objection because they're just adding up Yeas and Nays. Congress is also considering a Respect for Conscience Act that would require all federal agencies to include respect for conscience in their actions and regulations. 4th segment: Scot said on the front page of the Anchor this week is a story about the incardination of Fr. Andrew Johnson, a religious order priest who is becoming a diocesan priest. Fr. Roger said incardination means you belong to a diocese or religious institute or congregation. When Fr. Johnson, he was ordained into the Cistercian Order. Fr. Roger was incardinated as a priest of Fall River. Incardination is a process of moving between dioceses or between a diocese and religious order. Fr. Johnson, with the permission of his religious order, has discerned becoming a parish priest of Fall River. He is currently serving as a hospital chaplain. Scot and Susan recalled that in 2009 Fr. Ken Cannon was incardinated in the Archdiocese of Boston at a Mass at the Pastoral Center as Cardinal Seán recounted in his . Related to incardinations, Fr. Frank Pavone is a priest of the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, but was originally was a priest of the Archdiocese of New York. He moved to Texas at the invitation of the previous bishop to start a pro-life priests' group, but now the current bishop, Bishop Zurek, has asked Fr. Pavone to leave Priests for Life and return to the diocese. Bishop Zurek's letter was strongly worded and accused Fr. Pavone of having an inflated ego and questioning the finances of . Greg said he was unaware of having seen any other public letter that was this strongly worded. He said it recalls the recent situation regarding Fr. Corapi. He did not the statement correctly saying that there cannot be a freelance priest. A priest must answer to a bishop or a religious order. He believes Bishop Zurek is trying to reassert his authority over a priest who has become a freelancer. Scot said Fr. Pavone's response letter was respectful and responded to many of the issues raised in the bishops' letter. Fr. Pavone has been focused on providing priestly leadership throughout his priesthood at the urging of bishops like Cardinal John O'Connor of New York. Among Bishop Zurek's points was that Priests for Life raises $10 million per year without oversight. Fr. Pavone countered that a board of bishops oversees the organization. Fr. Roger said it's terrible is being played out in public. He doesn't think there is a more articulate pro-life advocate in the US and he is able to write credible and original weekly columns on this issue throughout the year. Fr. Pavone moved to Amarillo to found a religious order of pro-life priests, but that didn't happen for various reasons. So he is still a parish priest under obedience to his bishop. Fr. Roger said it's very unfortunate to have this compared to other celebrity priests who've had scandals because even Bishop Zurek's letter doesn't allege actual wrongdoing on the part of Fr. Pavone. Fr. Roger pointed out that the Bishop does have a right to ensure that Fr. Pavone is on the up and up with regard to his personal finances because he has a duty to shepherd his soul. The bishop may have gone overboard in his language, but Fr. Pavone has to remember that he is a priest of the diocese. Fr. Roger guesses that Fr. Pavone will eventually incardinate somewhere else under a bishop who will respect his desire to engage in pro-life ministry full-time. Susan said the bishop's letter was very harshly worded. As is often the cause, the real loser in this is the Church's work for the unborn. She said the CNS story says Fr. Pavone doesn't get a salary but that Priests for Life pay for his housing expenses (about $2,000 per month) and his expenses in working for Priests for Life. Scot said some people are trying to tie this to the Corapi situation of a couple of months ago, but there is nothing to compare this with that case or of the previous case of . 5th segment: Scot encouraged listeners to remember the telethon is coming up and asked them to tune in. Fr. Roger write an editorial in this week's Anchor about a priest in Niagara Falls who was extorted by a drug addict who demanded money in exchange for not filing a false accusation of abuse. Fr. Roger said the priest eventually gave him all his savings, maxed out his credit, borrowed from friends, and even took money from the parish to pay off this man. It came to $90,000. Fr. Roger asked why a priest would feel so vulnerable to a false accusation from a drug addict with so many credibility problems. The answer is that any accusation, no matter how outlandish, sets in motion a series of protocols that aren't actually in the letter of Church policy but that treat any accusation as credible. At the moment of an accusation, a priest has to leave his ministry, move out of the rectory, stop wearing his clerical clothes, and endure a press release about it. He said in many ways the same injustices that occurred prior to 2002 are now being foisted on priests. In both cases, it wasn't the policies but a lack of adherence to policies in place. Another point is that it takes so long for these investigations and trials to occur in the Church that it leaves priests in limbo and sometimes they never resume their priestly ministry. Susan asked how long it takes to decide if an accusation is credible. We need to balance protection of the innocent victim of abuse with the protection of the innocent victim of false accusation. How can we speed up the process so these men won't have their reputations and priestly ministries suspended. Scot said some priests say two wrongs don't make a right. Greg agreed that the process drags slowly even though some cases are immediately not credible. On the other hand, he is torn. He started working at the Pilot just as the scandal in Boston broke and he saw how the trust of the people was broken. It's a very difficult call to make. Fr. Roger has some ideas how to defend the full rights of accusers and the accused, to remove guilty priests as fast as possible and return innocent priests. First, there needs to be a real preliminary investigation when an accusation comes in by someone who is competent and trained to determine whether it is a truly credible and plausible accusation. Many times priests are just told they've been accused and not given the details of what he's accused of. Second, a priest who maintains his innocence should be entitled to a speedy investigation by both civil authorities and ecclesiastical review board. There's no excuse for a priest accused in 2002 to not have an answer to his circumstance today. We need to have the same outrage for false accusations of innocent priests who are hung out to dry just as we had for the abuse of children and the lack of response by the Church. Third, everything must be done to protect the reputation of a priest who has been accused but not convicted or admitted guilt. Scot said he hears similar comments from priests all the time. He said priests recognize that the pendulum needed to swing back to protection of children, but it's swung too far.

DO YOU THINK PRISON REALLY DOES ANY GOOD? THE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS A JOKE. WHEN YOU GO TO JAIL YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PAYING YOUR DEBT TO SOCIETY RIGHT? I MEAN IF YOU PAY A DEBT OFF IN ANY OTHER ASPECT OF LIFE, ONCE YOU PAY IT THEN ITS OVER. THEY REMOVE PAID DEBT FROM YOUR CREDIT REPORT AFTER YOU PAY IT DON'T THEY? SO WHY IS IT IF YOU GO TO JAIL FOR SOMETHING, YOUR RECORD CONTINUES TO FOLLOW YOU FOREVER? HOW CAN YOU REALLY REHABILITATE A CRIMINAL AND STILL CONTINUE TO PUNISH HIM? IF I STOLE SOMETHING OR SOLD DRUGS WHEN I WAS 19, AND GOT CAUGHT AND WENT TO PRISON FOR 3 YEAS, I WOULD BE STILL AT THE BEGINNING OF MY ADULT LIFE AND CAN OBVIOUSLY BE A CHANGED MAN. WHY WOULD I HAVE TO MAKE LIGHT OF THIS FACT AT 35 IN A JOB INTERVIEW? I'M ALL FOR SEXUAL PREDATORS AND VIOLENT CRIMINALS BEING MARKED BECAUSE THEY POSE A DANGER. AND IF YOU APPLYING TO WORK FOR A FINANCIAL INSTITUTION, THEN ANY KIND OF FRAUD HISTORY MAY BE RELEVANT. BUT PRISON MOST OFTEN TIMES MAKE THINGS WORST FOR MOST. AND TO ALLOW JUST ANYONE ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION IS A TRUE INJUSTICE IN ITSELF. SO WHAT DO YOU THINK, DOES JAIL DO MORE HARM THEN GOOD? SHOULD A PERSONS CRIMINAL PAST BE USED AGAINST THEM IN EMPLOYMENT SITUATIONS IF IT DOESN'T EVEN PERTAIN TO WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO DO? DO YOU HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD THAT HAS STOPPED YOU FROM MOVING FORWARD? LET US KNOW.
