How the Wildlife Forensic Academy is training the next generation of crime scene investigators for nature, with Dr Greg Simpson.Hi, Nick here from Conservation Careers and welcome to the podcast.Today we're exploring a lesser-known but vitally important side of conservation: wildlife forensics. My guest is Dr Greg Simpson — a vet, public health specialist, conservationist, and Managing Director of the Wildlife Forensic Academy in South Africa.Greg brings a fascinating blend of experiences — from veterinary clinics and public health to conservation education and wildlife crime scene investigations. In this conversation, we unpack what wildlife forensics actually is — and why it's becoming such a crucial tool in fighting wildlife crime and protecting biodiversity. We also explore the work of the Wildlife Forensic Academy — the world's first institution of its kind — which delivers hands-on, field-based training for students, rangers, researchers and professionals. You'll hear about the Academy's unique approach, its growing global partnerships, and how you can get involved. Finally, Greg shares personal insights into his role, career journey, advice for aspiring wildlife vets or forensic scientists — and his vision for scaling the Academy's impact across the world. Before we get started, I wanted to give you a quick heads up that whether you're just beginning your journey in conservation or looking to progress further, we've built three membership levels designed to support you at every stage.CC Free gives you full access to our library of career guides and templates, along with bespoke job alerts from the world's biggest conservation job board here at Conservation Careers. For deeper support, CC Pro unlocks access to all listings our website and adds our private members' community — a friendly, career-boosting space with training, events, expert guidance, and even the chance to join these podcast interviews live and put your own questions to our guests. And coming soon, CC Pass will give you full access to all our premium training courses. A Lifelong Exploration into Chlorine Dioxide In this episode of Scaling UP! H2O, Trace Blackmore welcomes Greg D. Simpson, a recognized authority on chlorine dioxide and a long-time researcher, writer, and technologist in the industrial water treatment space. With decades of hands-on experience and a personal archive of thousands of technical papers, Greg brings unmatched depth to this essential conversation. From Field Trials to File Cabinets Greg takes us through his early career, from being tasked to explore chlorine dioxide as an alternative disinfectant on the Gulf Coast to becoming a dedicated advocate of its power and versatility. He explains why chlorine dioxide often outperforms traditional biocides like bromine and chlorine, especially in complex environments such as refineries, hospitals, and cooling towers. Comparing Monochloramine and Chlorine Dioxide A central theme in the episode is Greg's recent research comparing monochloramine and chlorine dioxide. He shares real-world case histories, including treatments at major institutions and breaks performance differences in terms of biofilm penetration, disinfection byproducts, and residual impact. He also discusses regulatory hurdles, competitive dynamics, and what the literature says about long-term microbiological effects. Building Disinfection Systems and Emerging Applications The episode explores chlorine dioxide's expanding role in building disinfection, especially healthcare facilities. Greg shares how generator technologies are changing the game, while also diving into regulatory constraints in places like Texas. He further explains the promising potential of chlorine dioxide in air disinfection and surface sanitation, drawing from both studies and practical implementations. A Legacy of Learning From assembling four filing cabinets of technical papers to writing multiple books and collaborating with other industry pioneers, Greg's story is one of relentless inquiry. His work continues to influence how the industry thinks about safe and effective disinfection strategies. Conclusion Greg Simpson's insights go far beyond operational know-how. This episode is a masterclass in both the science and history of chlorine dioxide in industrial applications. For professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of advanced water treatment chemistry, this conversation is essential. Call-To-Action Explore more episodes of Scaling UP! Welcome back to Iron Sights After Dark! In this episode, I sat down with Greg Simpson. After serving in the US Army reserve for over 8 years, Simpson's experience as a Combat Medic with EMT credentials helped him stand out during his transition into Law Enforcement. Greg has served as a full-time patrol officer since 2015 and is also a California P.O.S.T. Certified First Aid/CPR/AED instructor. As a SWAT team member, Greg serves as both a tactical medic and operator. After sharing wild stories of experiencing and taking part in officer involved shootings, I had Greg check out my medic kits and "critique them". Simpsons love for constant improvement, the 2nd amendment community and his passion for protecting citizens of this country are a few of the many reasons I respect and appreciate the work he does. Greg discusses the benefits of serving in Law Enforcement as a trained Tac Medic and the importance of seeking help mentally to make sure LEO and first responder's can better serve both themselves and their community. After being politely asked to leave his daughter's house, David hits the bottom of the barrel, where he finds Bobby Grabowski hiding in the attic of a family's home. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. That's a lesson that Greg Simpson learned first hand after investing in numerous real estate seminars. After meeting his wife, Greg realized his first business as a pool boy wasn't going to be enough to support a family. Catching an infomercial at 3 am, Greg was convinced that flipping houses was the answer. After his dad invested a small fortune into these seminars, Greg learned very little, but was fortunate enough to meet a true mentor. Going forward, Greg learned a lot about flipping houses and selling wholesale. He didn't want others to go through what he did to gain that knowledge, and so he started his own real estate investing course. He's now fixed and flipped over 100 houses and has just launched his own full service mortgage company. Furthermore, he's aware of all the uncertainties in today's market, and is offering sound advice on riding this wave. What You'll Learn: What the fundamentals of buying properties are. Why you should never invest on speculation. How supply chain issues are affecting house flipping. And much more! Favorite Quote: “I've heard horror stories of people spending $100,000, and they learn more in my one day bootcamp than they did in that entire course.” -Greg Simpson How To Get Involved: To connect with Greg, visit www.outfastrealty.com. __________________________________________________________________________ Find Nikki on her Website here, or Email her at nikki@prissynikki.com You can also find her on Facebook, Instagram, & LinkedIn. Listen in on this conversation between Pastor Daimion and one of our teenagers, Greg Simpson. Greg is a great guy with a good heart. I appreciate his faithfulness!
Between their kids albums, the handful of fact-based songs from their regular rock records, and a reputation for being generally cerebral, They Might Be Giants are often categorized as a band that makes music with the intention of teaching the listener something about the world. But is that abiding impression based on anything more than a small sliver of their output? Schoolteacher and superfan Greg Simpson (of This Might Be A Podcast) joins co-hosts Jon Uleis and John Walker for an open-book oral quiz comprised of one simple question: What have we learned from TMBG? Also, what have we learned from e-mail? (9secreteps@gmail.com)
