Back again with AUA #3 - we're getting there people! Only, uhh, seven questions to go? Incremental progress baby. Plus, we see a good old Vaden and Ben fight in this one! Thank God, because things were getting a little stale with Vaden hammering on longtermism and Ben on cliodynamics. We cover: Is hypnosis a real thing? Types of universality contained within the genetic code Pressures associated with turning political/philosophical ideas into personal identities How do emotions/feelings interface with our rational/logical mind? How should they? Vaden's (hopefully one-off) experience with Bipolar Type-1 and psychosis Is problem solving the sole purpose of thinking? Vaden says yes (with many caveats!) and Ben says wtf no you fool. Then we argue about how to watch TV. Questions (Neil Hudson) Are there any theories as to the type of universality achievable via the genetic code (in BOI it is presumed to fall short of coding for all possible life forms)? (Neil Hudson) Wd be gd to get your take on: riffing on the Sperber/Mercier social thesis v. individual, if one is scarce private space/time then the need to constantly avow one's public identity may “swamp” the critical evaluation of arguments one hears? Goes to seeking truth v status (Arun Kannan) What are your thoughts on inexplicit knowledge (David Deutsch jargon) and more broadly emotions/feelings in the mind ? How do these interplay with explicit ideas / thoughts ? What should we prioritize ? If we don't prioritize one over the other, how to resolve conflicts between them ? Any tips, literature, Popperian wisdom you can share on this ? (Tom Nassis) Is the sole purpose of all forms of thinking problem-solving? Or can thinking have purposes other than solving a problem? Quotes Reach always has an explanation. But this time, to the best of my knowledge, the explanation is not yet known. If the reason for the jump in reach was that it was a jump to universality, what was the universality? The genetic code is presumably not universal for specifying life forms, since it relies on specific types of chemicals, such as proteins. Could it be a universal constructor? Perhaps. It does manage to build with inorganic materials sometimes, such as the calcium phosphate in bones, or the magnetite in the navigation system inside a pigeon's brain. Biotechnologists are already using it to manufacture hydrogen and to extract uranium from seawater. It can also program organisms to perform constructions outside their bodies: birds build nests; beavers build dams. Perhaps it would it be possible to specify, in the genetic code, an organism whose life cycle includes building a nuclear-powered spaceship. Or perhaps not. I guess it has some lesser, and not yet understood, universality. In 1994 the computer scientist and molecular biologist Leonard Adleman designed and built a computer composed of DNA together with some simple enzymes, and demonstrated that it was capable of performing some sophisticated computations. At the time, Adleman's DNA computer was arguably the fastest computer in the world. Further, it was clear that a universal classical computer could be made in a similar way. Hence we know that, whatever that other universality of the DNA system was, the universality of computation had also been inherent in it for billions of years, without ever being used – until Adleman used it. This week on Legally Speaking with Michael Mulligan:Only a tiny percentage of contracts ever end up in court. This is because contracts are intended to be agreements both parties wish to enter. If, for example, you agree to purchase a home from someone, both you and the seller presumably want to buy and sell the home for an agreed price. Nobody is required to force the home sale to complete as agreed. For understandable political reasons, contracts to rent homes are often no longer the result of both parties wanting to continue with the agreement. As renters outnumber landlords, it's been politically popular to legislate terms of home rental agreements to do such things as limit or prevent rent increases, prevent rental agreements from having an end date or restrict the circumstances in which a landlord can end a rental agreement. The result of this, combined with high inflation and rising interest rates, is that many renters are not paying the market value of their homes. This has resulted in a strong financial incentive for landlords to evict tenants, sell properties, or otherwise get out of agreements to which they do not want to be a party. The BC Government has responded by attempting to impose penalties to force landlords to continue subsidizing rents for existing tenants. One of the few circumstances in which a landlord can end a contract to rent a home is if they, or a close family member, wish to move into it themselves. To prevent this exception from being misused, the BC Government has required landlords who end a contract to rent a home for this reason and who do not move into the home “within a reasonable period of time”, to pay the former tenant 12 months of rent. The substantial amount of money a former tenant might get has resulted in many applications. Between January 1, 2021, and April 30, 2023, there were 2,200 applications. In the case discussed on the show, the landlord couldn't move into their home for four months because he received a stop work order from Saanich for some renovations he was doing before moving in. He was required to provide architectural drawings and asbestos testing before completing the renovations. At an arbitration, an adjudicator awarded the former tenant $22,001.04. This was overturned on appeal to the BC Supreme Court and, eventually, the BC Court of Appeal. Also, on the show, the BCCA upholds a decision by the BC Review Board to keep a woman who was found not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder in a secure hospital. The woman suffered from treatment-resistant Schizoaffective Disorder, Bipolar Type, complicated by substance abuse. She had attempted to abduct a 4-year-old child from a bus believing the child was her own. That was not the first time she had done something similar. She has no insight into her mental disorder and continues to believe that she is the mother of “angel babies” that she needs to get back. Finally, on the show, the BC Court of Appeal found that a 4-year minimum sentence for manslaughter with a firearm was not “grossly disproportionate” to the appropriate sentence in the case being considered and, as a result, not unconstitutional. Because the case did not consider other reasonably hypothetical circumstances where someone could be subject to the mandatory minimum sentence, the provisions may need to be revised in a future case. Follow this link for a transcript of the show and links to the cases discussed.

Mikhaila Peterson suffered most of her childhood with multiple health problems, starting with joint pain at the ripe age of 2 years old. By the time she was 7, she was diagnosed with extremely severe Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis with 37 actively inflamed joints. She began treatment with several medically prescribed drugs and as her health continued to decline, she was also diagnosed with severe depression, she experienced hypomanic episodes (Bipolar Type 2), and suffered from fairly severe OCD tendencies. So they added more prescriptions. Over the years Mikhaila's health continued to decline until she decided to experiment with an elimination diet. When she began to see things in her health change for the better, she realized she was on to something. Things like the paleo or keto diet certainly didn't exist back then. She continued to experiment with her diet until she found what works best for her, and thus was born the Lion diet. As the founder of the Lion diet, Mikhaila now spends her time educating others about how diet affects overall health using her personal story and the stories of others who see results following the strict diet. She also operates as CEO of Luminate Enterprises and she has just launched The Mikhaila Peterson Podcast, which, within its first week has already reached #3 in health. Fresh from a therapy session, I recorded to share an epiphany about my diagnosis (as Bipolar Type 1 Disorder). In this episode, I focused on the other pole of the spectrum, that is Mania. I shared examples of manic behavior, which include my own. This, yet again, is another reminder that not all mental health disorders are extreme. Sometimes, they may seem like simple and normal behaviors, so don't be quick to judge people.

In this episode I share my reasons why I have chosen to do a mental health podcast that focuses on the mood disorder Bipolar Type 2. I explain what Bipolar Type 2 is and the symptoms associated with hypomanic and depressive episodes.
Sheree Martines is a wonderful person who suffers from Bipolar Type 1 Disorder but has managed to make a great life for herself despite her past. She is an outspoken Mental Health Advocate and Author. Her book that was published in 2019 called "Rude Awakening" is a crime mystery (available here https://amzn.to/3bf7b2a) and she is currently working on her biography currently to be released at a later date. Below is her a little bit about her self from her Blog www.livingbipolardisorder.blogspot.com "My disorder was incorrectly diagnosed for more than three decades, and even after my disorder was diagnosed, it took another seven years to find the right combination of drugs that allowed me to finally manage my disorder. During that time I did extensive research on bipolar trying to better understand what was happening to me. A vocal advocate of mental health issues, I have spoken about my disorder on several other podcasts. I have also written several commentaries about this for NPR. My hope is that my experiences might help others. I'm not afraid to discuss the ugly aspects of this disorder, as well as some of the black comedy that accompanied it." During the video we travel through the mind and day to day nuances of a unique iteration of Bipolar disorder along with early childhood trauma. I learned a lot about the range of effects that helped me understand that each person experiencing this disorder may have different symptoms that require their own unique coping mechanisms. Shelly is a business owner, fitness instructor, homeowner, and much more. The stigma around mental illness, and the lack of a fulfilling life, is simply untrue. She talks about how she picked herself back up and continues to push through life despite her diagnosis.

Now, hear her take on the Essential 11 questions. In light of Mental Health Awareness Week 2020, I have dedicated a few of my podcast episodes to discuss topics around mental health. In this episode I am joined by my fiancé , Dan Stoner, who has kindly volunteered to speak of his personal experience of Bipolar Disorder. Dan is diagnosed with Bipolar Type 2 Rapid Cycling. In this episode he gives listeners an idea of what it can be like living with the symptoms that he experiences on a day to day basis. We aim to define and explain Bipolar as best we can, however experiences can vary from person to person and not all those who have been diagnosed with Bipolar will experience similar to what is discussed here. We hope this provides some insight into life with Bipolar for both the diagnosed individual and their loved ones. This is the preface to the book, "Super Intense" - please do not begin the book until you've listened to this preface. In this introduction I give backstory about living with Bipolar Type 1 and insight on my views about medicine and provide medical disclaimers. If you must skip it, just read this: I'm not a licensed mental health professional. I'm just a human sharing my experience of living with intense emotions. This is not medical advice. This book (and myself) is neither for nor against medications - that's a decision between you and a mental health professional (and has nothing to do with me or this content). This is essentially a quick-use handbook on how to live with intense emotions as a superpower.

Silent Superheroes - Frank Conversations About Mental Health At Work
Meet Amanda, a mom working as a pharmacy technician while managing bipolar type 1. In this episode of Silent Superheroes, Amanda relives some of her experiences with undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Those experiences include making dean’s list during a manic semester and considering suicide while the rest of New York celebrated winning the Super Bowl. A … Continue reading "#1 From Dean’s List to Desperation and a Workable Plan – Bipolar Type 1" The post #1 From Dean’s List to Desperation and a Workable Plan – Bipolar Type 1 appeared first on Silent Superheroes Podcast.
Amanda, a counselor and mental illness advocate, struggled with grief and suicidal ideations. She was diagnosed with major depressive disorder and thought maybe her struggles were over. Yet, she continued to face numbness and found any passion she once had was gone. Eventually, she was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 2 (also known as hypomania); the more accurate diagnosis, medication, and counseling finally began to give her some relief. Amanda encourages anyone struggling with mental illness or other hard life moments to be honest with people and allow them to help. "It's okay to struggle," she says. Amanda's Answers To The Fun Questions: • What are you loving right now? Diet Coke and blasting live folk music (especially the Avett Brothers) • What’s your favorite food/meal/snack? Chicken burrito, no pico, all rice on the side • What are you doing to take care of yourself? Slowing down: less work, more music. • What are you doing to be brave? Thousands of people read Thomas Violence's tweets every day - funny, cutting, and sometimes a live feed into the hectic mind of someone with rapid-cycling Bipolar Type 1 Disorder. The man behind the Twitter account is Benjamin McLeay: web developer by day, member of Brisbane bands The Keepaways and Dogbauu by night, and tweeting at all times. We talk about making plans when you can't plan your moods, ideal jobs, and how depressive periods would be luxurious and restful if only you weren't depressed. Ben (or, Thomas?) tells me how Twitter has helped him find people who understand his bipolar, and how live gigs suit mania. Also: hot takes on The Interview, Lost, the Japanese flag, and other assorted nonsense. If you've never understood Twitter, this episode may help you out.
"Mania is seductive." Mike Day is the drummer for Brisbane band Mega Ogre, as well as the winner of the SLQ Young Writer Award 2014. He lives with Bipolar Type 2 Disorder and anxiety, and also a cat. Mike tells me about losing friends during manic stages, writing tips, Paddington Dads(TM), and why he wouldn't get rid of Bipolar. We also talk about weird movies you watch during insomnia, holding on to your personality amid your illness, and what Hobbits actually do. I mean, what do they do? Does Bilbo have a job? Featuring music by Mega Ogre: 'Hikikomori'.
