We continue our exploration of dinosaurs on film by entering The Valley of Gwangi!
Behold the film that smashed its way into pop culture's radioactive kaiju heart, inspiring Godzilla and an entire genre! Not to mention putting Ray Harryhausen and Ray Bradbury on the map - two dino-nerds who changed science fiction forever. Plus, we discuss the Six Degrees of Beast, with its connections to Psycho, Jean Renoir, and the Man with No Name trilogy; then we get into a fight about The Valley of Gwangi. THEN, Peter Lorre returns with the premiere of "The Poverty Row Picture Show". THEN... whew, it's too much for the show notes.Enjoy this jampacked episode of monster movie goodness! Escuchar audio
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we complete our series on Trespasser. We look through the glass darkly at the mistakes and how they illustrate some things, before turning to our takeaways. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Finished the game! Issues covered: the funhouse mirror, writing the weird things on the whiteboards, voice acting, a game lost to time, the inner monologue, some good set up of a level, the invisible blocking wall surrounding Hammond's, box lifting master, weird technical friction about saves, looking for the white keycard, a misaligned bookshelf and visual language, the green disc, the personal memoir, rubbing the disc on the drive, the keycard mess, finding an alternate solution, immersive sim stuff, parallel developments, shining a light on something you didn't know you wanted, the preset objects, restoring forces, deconstructing what the designers put to place your own, contrivances, more keys that aren't keys, not leaning on the license, a more straightforward puzzle, 526327, the extending weird finger, modeling "dexterity," throwing the keycard in the Atlantic, a helpful (?) velociraptor, pressure plates in the ruins, playing something mid-development, games that should be canceled, deals that forced the game out, breaking your game while you build it, getting better at making the game, hitting the board in the wrong place, setting up the physics and seeing the world a certain way, shaking the Jell-O, letting the Jell-O settle, learning how to kite the dinosaurs, spawning three dinosaurs, making terrible mistakes, choosing appropriate goals, not knowing if a thing is possible, mashing up things, being aspirational, leading the way, admiring the purity, dinosaur ecology, getting to see something like this, being consistent in your rules, providing clarity. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Arthur Conan Doyle, The Lost World, Through A Glass Darkly, Minnie Driver, Richard Attenborough, Jimmy Carter, Populous, Civilization, Peter Molyneux, Sid Meier, Ultima Underworld, Half-Life 2, DOOM (1993), Everything Everywhere All At Once, The Spielbergs, Bethesda Game Studios, Call of Duty, Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, Skyrim, Todd Howard, Velvet Underground, Jell-O, Fallout 3, Hal Barwood, Ray Harryhausen, Land That Time Forgot, Zoo Tycoon, Far Cry 2, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: ?? Notes: Having not seen 1974's The Land That Time Forgot in quite some time, Brett misremembered the movie. He was actually thinking either about scenes from a movie called The Valley of Gwangi, which is from 1969, or One Million Years BC, (1966) both of which feature stop-motion animation by Harryhausen. Jim and Patrick discuss the incredibly controversial Kinji Fukasaku swan song Battle Royale, and some of special effects auteur Ray Harryhausen's wonderful work in The Valley of Gwangi. This episode's got dinosaurs, it's got grenades, it's got cowboys, katanas, and plenty of death.
Steve interviews author and film historian Gregory Kulon on the making of the 1969 cowboys vs dinosaurs movie, "The Valley of Gwangi."
Byrd and Matt talk about Ray Harryhausen's classic dinosaur Western, the Valley of Gwangi! It tells the story of some showmen and a scientist who go on an expedition into a valley in Mexico to find a prehistoric miniature horse. What they also find is a flesh craving Allosaurus. They bring it back to put it on display for the public and well... things don't go so well. We'll discuss the history of the film, dating back to Willis O'Brien's failed attempts to get it made in the 1940s, the differences between O'Brien's version and Harryhausen's completed film, the lasting influence of Gwangi, the stop motion effects, and whether or not we think it holds up. Relax and join the conversation!

Michael and Pax stretch the definitions of both Western and Horror in this second Halloween pick, The Valley of Gwangi starring James Franciscus, Gila Golan, and Richard Carlson. And with visual effects by Ray Harryhausen. But their Westernin' picks this month are full on horror-related as Pax reads Tim Seeley, Aaron Campbell, and Jim Terry's vampire comic West of Sundown, and Michael watches Sam Shepard's Western ghost story Silent Tongue and the super cheesy Teenage Monster.

IT'S WRANGLERS VS. DINOSAURS, BUCKAROOS VS. WEREWOLVES, AND DISGRACED SOLDIERS VS. WESTWARD EXPANDING CANNIBALS! Howdy, cowpoke, did you just hear a spooky coyote howl? Catch a glimpse of a ghostly cow, maybe? That's probably because Gabe and returning guest Luana Saitta are talking about westerns with a horror slant this month. Well, that was the idea, at least. We ended up covering classic dino “Weird Western,” The Valley of Gwangi (directed by Jim O'Connolly, 1969), an arty frontier bodice ripper with a werewolf twist in Martin Donovan's Mad at the Moon (1992), one gen-u-ine western horror classic – Antonia Bird's Ravenous (1999). Have you guys seen Ravenous? Because it's really good. Note: I didn't notice that Luana's mic was a bit hot and that mine was echoing until I was in the process of editing. I tried to fix both issues to the best of my abilities. I mean...come on! Gwangi's influence is far reaching, there is no denying that, but does it hold up today? Unlocking because this week's episode on The Black Scorpion overlaps as an American sci-fi movie shot in Mexico. It's cowboys vs. dinosaurs! We weigh the tragic amateurishness of Edward Nassour's "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" vs. the poetic naturalism of Ray Harryhausen's "The Valley of Gwangi." Along the way, we unpack the uncanny history of dinosaurs and cowboys as totems of American collective identity. All original music courtesy of Niel Jakobyhttps://nieljacoby.bandcamp.com/bPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/MonsterCrazeMemoirsOfficialiTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/monster-craze-memoirs/id1491963648Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3aSrQ5JFez33XuVanaFYIwPocket Casts: https://pca.st/lkra63chSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-3949861YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB_GcDWtQj_2wGEnlAB7P4AFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Monster-Craze-Memoirs-106199087480182/Twitter: https://twitter.com/KennethJWaste2

After a couple of podcasts wrestling with cinema's greatest monsters, Adam and Darrell face down another Titan of Monster Cinema. Ray Harryhausen had a magical career bringing stop-motion life to films like the Sinbad trilogy, Mighty Joe Young, Clash Of The Titans, Hammer's One Million Years B.C. and the legendary Jason and the Argonauts. Sure, the actors played their part but you were really paying to see such cinematic monsters like The Kraken, The Hydra, sword-wielding skeletons, Gwangi, Mighty Joe Young and, of course, the snake-haired Medusa.Check out the Cine-Lit website for additional content and further reading: https://cinelitpodcast.wordpress.com.Produced and edited by Steve Woodward at PodcastingEditor.com. We're kicking of our monster month at the Sci-fi Sanctuary with this one. It features those weird, off-brand, pre-Jurassic Park dinosaurs, but at least they've been animated by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. As an added side tangent, this is probably the closest we're going to get on covering "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Please do like, subscribe, and rate on all the things like Facebook, Twitter, Apple Podcasts, and YouTube. Wherever you happen to be hearing us, really. With the cinematic release of a new telling of the classic Frances Hodgson Burnett children’s book The Secret Garden, featuring a score by Dario Marianelli, Matthew Sweet looks at this and other music for secret worlds in film. From the fantasy worlds of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland and C.S Lewis's Narnia, to the dinosaur ridden terrains of Jurassic Park and the Valley of Gwangi, the mind of John Malkovich, and the labyrinth of Pan. Our classic score is Dmitri Tiomkin's music evoking the mystical utopia of Shangri-la in Frank Capra's Lost Horizon.
This time Katie & Alex talked with the creators and hosts of the I Know Dino Podcast, Garret & Sabrina to chat about the classic movie The Valley of Gwangi from 1969. It's basically cowboys & dinosaurs, so what's not to love? We break it down, talk about how the science is represented, some background on how the movie was made and all that dinosaur fun. The movie is available on Vudu and Amazon Prime if you want to watch before listening in! This episode serves as sort of a companion piece to our last one that focused on King Kong, as we turn our eyes this time to one of Kong's foes, dinosaurs! Most kids grow up loving dinosaurs, spending time playing with plastic dinos and learning the names of the many different species. There are so many different types, with new ones still being discovered. Perhaps part of the magic of dinosaurs is the fact that these amazing creatures actually existed! While we love our Kongs and Godzillas, the Tyrannosaurus Rex was a real (and terrifying) beast, and we can go to museums and see its skeleton, and get a sense of just how imposing it would have been. For over 100 years, artists have depicted dinosaurs in film, going back to the days of silent pictures, all the way up to today, with the popular Jurassic World films. Dinosaurs never seem to leave the imagination of humanity. The Planet 8 crew watched a whole heap of dinosaur films, and we'll talk about them -in no particular order! But rest assured, we will discuss many well-known films, as well as some oddities and a few not so great movies. Like the range of species in the dinosaur world, dinosaur films are many and varied! But we couldn't discuss dinosaur movies without talking about the work of stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen. The way Harryhausen imbued his creatures with life, with personality, is still impressive. Films such as Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Valley of Gwangi, and 1,000,000 Years B.C. all come under our lens.Of course, other techniques besides stop-motion have been used. We'll look at the pros and cons of these too, including puppetry, men in suits, and CGI. And don't miss our discussion of - DINOSAURUS!!You can't talk about dinosaur movies without bringing up Jurassic Park/World, so of course we'll go there. The first Jurassic Park film revolutionized special effects, and the dinosaurs in it still look fantastic. We're sure that people will be watching dinosaur movies (or holograms, or virtual reality programs) far into the future! For our Sensor Sweep segment, Bob shares some news about some artists you should know about. Nick Shev, who we covered on a previous episode, is now designing t-shirts! He has a bunch of cool Godzilla tees over at his Tee Public shop: https://www.teepublic.com/user/nickshevAnother great artists you should check out is Gaz Gretsky. Especially if you are a Power Rangers fan, you will want to see Gaz's shop! Head over to https://www.etsy.com/shop/gazbot to check out all his cool stuff.Well, it's time to return from prehistoric days to the present. Yeah, we know it's not much fun right now, but we hope everyone is staying healthy and safe! And we hope you were entertained by this episode. This week on Gargantucast hosts Chris McDonald and Cole Grisson are joined by internet personality Brandon Tenold. In continuation of Jurassic July they dive into the Ray Harryhausen classic The Valley of Gwangi. They discuss how the film would be one of the last major dinosaur adventure films and the tricky nature of the Weird West sub-genre. - Theme song by The Tormented Teamster A Something Ghoulish Podcast
S2E10 - The Valley of Gwangi (1969)
Mur, Mitch and Jonathan discuss whether or not we really should resurrect/domesticate dinosaurs and all of the pitfalls along the way. Ian Malcolm: God creates dinosaurs. God destroys dinosaurs. God creates man. Man destroys God. Man creates dinosaurs … Ellie Satler: Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth.
This week we kick off a new series on Dinosaurs with the 1969 film The Valley of Gwangi. The film is a 1969 American western fantasy film, produced by Charles H. Schneer and Ray Harryhausen, directed by Jim O'Connolly, written by William Bast,[1] and starring James Franciscus, Richard Carlson, and Gila Golan. Creature stop-motion effects were by Harryhausen, the last dinosaur-themed film that he animated. (Episode 289)
ISSUE #61 - Justifying My Movie Collection. Week 25 of watching every Godzilla & King Kong movie and everything in between!! This week it's Ray Harryhausen's final dinosaur movie, THE VALLEY OF GWANGI!!!!
Part-Western, part-dinosaur epic, The Valley of Gwangi (Jim O’Connolly, 1969) is a fantasy that combines the icons and images of the frontier myth together with stop-motion animation directed by Ray Harryhausen, a project that he had himself inherited from his mentor Willis O'Brien. Set in Mexico at the turn of the 20th century, and with a plot that involves the capture of a living Allosaurus by a gang of cowboys, The Valley of Gwangi stands as Harryhausen’s final ‘dinosaur film’, one whose effects imagery is the fullest expression of his unique handling of stop-motion creatures. Joining Chris and Alex for episode 33, and to discuss the power of The Valley of Gwangi’s stop-motion puppetry, is award-winning animator Astrid Goldsmith (a.k.a. Mock Duck Studios). Topics include the film’s fantastical treatment (and manipulation) of generic conventions; the organisation of interconnected spatial ‘arenas’ that structure the Western Fantasy narrative; and the interplay of live-action and animated elements during the film’s celebrated ‘rope battle’ between man and dinosaur.
Stop motion animation is a stable of the kaiju genre, dating back to the first true entries of Lost World and King Kong. Westerns though... are not. But that doesn't mean they can't cross paths. The question is how well is it done? Well join us this episode as we talk about such a film, The Valley of Gwangi!

Henry and his special guest Laura aka @cleverfangirl on instagram, check out a strange and delightful romp that involves cowboys, oddly placed gypsies, and a bunch of dinosaurs that would rather eat you then perform for ya. At the request of a listener, Matt opens a series of episodes charting his transformation from a myopic, facile, political absolutist to the philosophical seeker you know and love. He is charting this journey with movies, beginning with The Valley of Gwangi, a dinosaur film he loved as a youth that nonetheless had some pretty insidious messages contained within, messages that are a reflection of the time in which the film was made. Welcome to 2018 and the first episode of our new series: On The Fringe! This will be a series where we discuss movies that don't quite fit into the catagory of a "giant monster" film but are super close. This week we are talking about the cowboys vs dinosaur extravaganza known as Valley of Gwangi.
The Valley of the Gwangi is a bad movie that was close to the heart of the wonderful Susan Tankersley. This one is for her.

Join us as we welcome Steve Sabatka to the show, whose debut Young Adult horror/science fiction novel just hit the stores, MISTER FISHBACK'S MONSTER, in the tradition of late night monster flicks and the magical films of Ray Harryhausen! Prepare for a fun ride tonight as Francy Weatherman, Joe Flynn, Dawn Proctor, Nicholas Grabowsky, possible visits from B-actor John Link and horror writer Tom Sawyer, and listener call-ins chat with this wonderful new writer! With a special opening tribute to the late Gene Wilder. “See ravenous beasts from the dawn of time! Gun packin’ roller derby queens! Chattering freaks, belched up from the ocean floor! Bug-eyed Martian bullies! Political intrigue! Corporate corruption! Bigfoot! Blood! Guts! Pam Grier!” When Steve Sabatka was five years old, he saw the original, classic King Kong for the first time. He hasn’t been the same since. As a kid, Steve started making 8mm movies, animating clay dinosaurs in miniature jungles, and dreaming of becoming the next Ray Harryhausen. But by the time Steve was a senior in high school, stop motion had become a dying art. Steve started writing – and dreaming of being the next Ray Bradbury. When he was in college, Steve met Fay Wray in person at a film festival in Dallas, Texas. So effusive was his praise and appreciation for Ms. Wray, that the aging actress felt it prudent to alert theater security guards. Happily, no charges were preferred. Steve also met his childhood idol, Ray Harryhausen - and actually shook the hand that gave frame-by-frame life to Mighty Joe Young, and Gwangi. Steve lives in Newport, Oregon, just a few blocks from the ocean, and teaches at Newport High School – home of the Cubs. Mister Fishback’s Monster is his first published book.

The wild West meets the Jurassic period as we ride into the hidden valley to lasso an episode on the cowboys vs. dinosaurs creature feature The Valley of Gwangi. We comment on how the story borrows from previous dinosaur movies, marvel at the detail and artistry of special effects master Ray Harryhausen's creations, and ponder if the film could serve as an alternate origin story for Devil Dinosaur. Warning: Contains explicit language, spoilers, and pedantry about paleontological accuracy.Subscribe to our podcast here.Listen to us on Stitcher here.Interested in getting more from this movie? Check out supplemental material for this episode here.Do you think Gwangi's hidden valley contains a reservoir of salad dressing? Want to weigh in on whether stabbing a dinosaur with a flag means you've claimed it for your country? Have you or anyone in your family ever suffered from bad post-production dubbing? Leave a comment and keep the conversation going.
This evening, in one of the most slam dunk casting decisions in movie history, David Bowie is an Alien. In the wild, wild west, it’s cowboys vs …. dinosaurs? We hear of one lady's early cinema going life in Barbados, Let’s just say the King travels well, and we talk a film that gives Shaun that childhood feeling all over again. Welcome to They Don’t Make ‘em Like They Used To
Cowboys and Dinosaurs ! Cowboys AND Dinosaurs ! That’s right. Jim and Mark take a close look at 1969’s “The Valley of Gwangi,” featuring the incredible work of Ray Harryhausen and starring James Franciscus and Richard Carlson
It's episode 63, ya'll! In honor of this summer's blockbuster, Jurassic World, we chose some dinosaur movies to discuss. First, though, we kick things off with the most recent Pixar vehicle, Inside Out. Get into it! IN THEATERS Inside Out - Not entirely sensical but pretty damn good. THEME MOVIES The Valley of Gwangi - This one gets the Ross Gellar stamp of approval. The Land Before Time - Does this one hold up? We want to hear from you! Theodore Rex - Why? Just why? Matthew Sweet excavates samples of prehistoric film music in the light of the launch of the latest movie in the Jurassic Park franchise - Jurassic World. The programme features scores from "When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth"; "The Lost World"; "Valley of Gwangi"; "Dinosaur" and "Ice Age" as well as music by John Williams and Michael Giacchino. The Classic Score of the week is Mario Nascimbene's music for "One Million Years BC".
Tracey Morris (from Disney, Indiana) continues her visit to the Monster Kid Radio Station with more talk about the movie The Valley of Gwangi (dir. Jim O'Connolly). Ray Harryhausen's influence has been felt across nearly all of moviedom, and has definitely been felt in Tracey's wheelhouse, so she and Derek talk a bit about how Harryhausen's films may have influenced some of her favorite films. They also talk briefly about the recent documentary Ray Harryhausen: Special Effects Titan (dir. Gilles Penso). Later in the show, Tom Biegler calls in his thoughts on a Vincent Price film from 1970. In this episode, Mom and I review The Valley of Gwangi -- quite possibly the Greatest Movie EVER!
On Today’s episode: Cowboys Battle Monsters in the Lost World of Forbidden Valley. On today’s show it’s Cowboys vs. dinosaurs as Nic, Mary and I will visit one of my all time favorites childhood films from 1969 The Valley of Gwangi which is probably the best dinosaur movie ever made it has fantastic stop motion […]
Now that remakes are the new sequels, the boys tackle what movies should be reimagined (ever heard of Vally of Gwangi or Champions of Justice?), the direction giant monkey movies should be headed in, and what went wrong with the Rob Zombie Halloween remake. There's also a couple of movies that maybe never should be remade. Or maybe sooner or later they'll all get remade. Who knows?
"The whole reason genres exist is because people want to see certain cinematic forms over and over again, with new wrinkles, surprises, developments, bigger, better, etc. The western, the war movie, the spy thriller, the monster movie. They are the meat and potatoes of the broad cinema audience’s diet." Brian Trenchard-Smith has been around the block in this industry. Getting his start in the business cutting trailers in the 1960s, Smith soon found his way into directing. His first feature, the Australian kung fu flic The Man From Hong Kong, was made in the mid-70s. Since then Smith has never stopped chasing his love. Now in Hawaii prepping his 37th film, the Valley of Gwangi-inspired Tyrannosaurus Azteca, Smith has no qualms about his position in the industry as a director of genre films. With many of his films he strives to both satirize and celebrate particular genres, and this is exactly what I love to see filmmakers do. He has an admirably upbeat attitude about his career, and this show is a testament to that. I began my interview with Brian under the assumption that the Hawaiian phone lines would present us with too much static to have more than a fifteen-minute interview. Thankfully Hawaii was calm on this Saturday morning, so Brian and I had the chance to talk for over 50 minutes. Among the topics discussed are the upcoming Tyrannosaurus Azteca, his love for genre films, the effect of low attention spans on movies, ’sandwich films,’ how he got started in the business, making The Man From Hong Kong, the story behind how he convinced Trimark to produce Leprechaun 4: In Space, pitching penis bursting, mandatory breast shots, his idea for Leprechaun 5 (definitely not In The Hood), his ’genre cocktail’ pet names for movies, the genre greatness of Megiddo: The Omega Code 2, making ’gay’ versions of his movies, and even some political talk.
