Harpdog and I discuss the live music business, particularly in Western Canada. Harpdog imparts some wise ideas about the decline in live music and the rise in technology even before the COVID 19 pandemic. We talk about the Blues and about what he has done recently with his 2019 album For Love And Money and what he is doing currently with his online series on his website called "In The Dog House." My discovery composer of the week is Girolamo Fantini, and important early Baroque trumpet player and author.

Little Victor was raised in Italy and Memphis and was dubbed "The Beale Street Blues Bopper" by his cousin-- the avant garde-blues filmmaker, producer and performer Tav Falco. While in Memphis, his uncle, noted blues writer David Evans and family friend Alex Chilton also encouraged the young Victor, who was already playing harp and singing, to pick up the guitar. He was soon performing weekly on Beale Street with Uncle Ben Perry. With influences such as these it's no wonder Little Victor is deeply rooted in traditional blues sounds, but also has a fiercely independent artistic sense of purpose. He's made several of his own records for Wild Records, El Toro records, and Germany's Rhythm Bomb records, and his most recent effort, "Deluxe Lo-Fi" features Kim Wilson, Carl Sonny Leyland, Big John Atkinson, Willie Buck, and Tomi Leino and Jo Buddy from Finland. Victor is probably best known for his long and successful association with Louisiana Red and the significant crossover success of their "Back to the Black Bayou", on Ruf Records. They worked closely together until Red's passing in 2012-- check out Victor's emotional performance in this video of his original "The Death of Louisiana Red". In the last several years, Victor has used his strong musical vision to produce artists such as The Jelly Roll Men (see NBB Episode 7), Shakedown Tim (see NBB episode 11), Sophie Kay of Paris, Harpdog Brown of Canada, Mo Al Jazz of France, Little Hat of the Netherlands and many others. Couch Kid New Music Harpdog Brown returns to The Couch for his third visit.  This time he returns to share stories around the recording of Travelin With The Blues, which includes appearances by folks like Charlie Musselwhite, Kid Andersen, Rusty Zinn and more. Pierre Lacocque from Mississippi Heat takes a seat for the fourth time, he is one of my original kids first sitting on The Couch back in 2010 and returning in 2012 and then in 2014.  This time it is to discuss the new release, Cab Driving Man.  It’s always a blast with Pierre. Teresa James was scheduled a few weeks back, but fell ill…So we rescheduled to bring her back for her second visit. She returns to The Couch with her new album, Bonafide. It will be fun to catch up with this talented vocalist and learn what has been happening in her life and the recording of this new album. The Jimmys went to Transylvania to record a live album, and the results are fantastic.  Jimmy Voegeli and I will sit and talk about all the adventures the band has has since his first visit in November 2015.

Kelowna, British Columbia's Rick Halisheff - a.k.a. Poppa Dawg - turns in a solid set of traditional Blues penned by the excellent guitarist and singer. 'Nobody Here Feels Sorry For You' bounces between Hokum and Jump; 'Croc Talkin', a greasy, minor-key funk instrumental features some of the snarkiest wah tone ever waxed; and 'This Man' is a towering deep soul number. 'I Ain't Leavin' shuffles with Stevie Ray Vaughan power, '1, 2, Gone' swings like Ronnie Earl's best work and 'Cool Little Number' is reminiscent of Little Charlie and Rick Estrin's hipper stuff. Hailing originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Rick 'Poppa Dawg' Halisheff has played for 20 yrs in a variety of bands and has backed up such artists as Kenny 'Blues Boss' Wayne, Michael Pickett, Harpdog Brown, Sherman 'Tank' Doucette, and Juno Award winner Dave Nicol. For 10 years, he has been the bandleader and frontman for the very successful Western Canadian Blues band Dogskin Suit. In that time, they recorded 2 CDs, received airplay in Canada, and around the World including CBC's Saturday Night Blues and won numerous awards including Best Local Band 2001 & 2002 and an Honour In The Arts award.
