In early June 2021, remains of 215 Indigenous children were found at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia, Canada. The school was one of the largest Indian residential schools in Canada and operated from the late 19th century to the late 1970s. Indigenous children, some as young as 3 years old, we were forcibly taken from their families and put into residential schools in Canada. This is also what happened in Native boarding schools in the U.S. during the same time period — children's hair was cut off, they were forbidden to speak their Indigenous languages, and to see their families. Some didn't return home for many years and some never returned. Tiokasin Ghosthorse speaks with Christine Diindiisi McCleave (Turtle Mountain Ojibwe), CEO, National Native American Boarding School Healing Coalition about the organization's support of the introduction of a U.S. Bill for a Truth and Healing Commission on Indian Boarding School Policies. Christine is a leader and an activist for Indigenous rights advocating for truth, justice and healing for the genocidal policy of U.S. Indian Boarding Schools. She has dedicated her life and work to pursuing truth and healing for the Indigenous survivors of historical trauma at the hands of colonialism and settler-states. Visit https://boardingschoolhealing.org/October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Institute of Justice, domestic violence disproportionately impacts Native Americans and Alaska Natives, with more than 1.5 million Native women and 1.4 million Native men experiencing violence during their lifetime, often by non-Native perpetrators. Domestic violence among Native Americans is not natural or traditional. The domination and subjugation of Native Americans began with colonization and continues today. Colonization was responsible for the theft, occupation, pollution and exploitation of Indigenous lands. Today, Natives who are living in tribal communities on or near lands that are exploited by extractive industries face the highest rates of domestic and sexual violence. Tiokasin talks with Lori Jump (Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians), executive director of StrongHearts Native Helpline, a 24/7 culturally appropriate domestic, dating and sexual violence helpline for Native Americans and Alaska Natives. Lori is the former executive director and current board member of Uniting Three Fires Against Violence, Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault tribal coalition in Michigan. She served on the Federal Task Force researching Violence Against American Indians and Alaska Native Women and has more than 26 years of tribal advocacy experience in her community. This week’s Past, Present, Future, Live! features New Orleans trailblazers The Soul Rebels, whose eight-piece brass ensemble continues to push the boundaries of New Orleans' musical tradition. We talk with The Soul Rebels founder and drummer Lumar LeBlanc and trumpet players Marcus Hubbard and Julian Gosin about the band’s path from side project to international acclaim. After opening for the legendary Cyril Neville at Tipitina’s in 1991 and wowing him with their unbridled live performance, Cyril blessed them with the name “Soul Rebels” in honor of Bob Marley. The Soul Rebels carried that revolutionary spirit every step of the way, blending their masterful second-line brass band chops with elements of funk, soul, hip-hop, pop and rock, all the while receiving pushback from traditionalists who wouldn't accept their new sound. But over nearly three decades The Soul Rebels have kept pushing forward, bringing the music of their beloved hometown to huge audiences across the globe and collaborating with a list of artists unparalleled in its length and diversity, including Katy Perry, Nas, and Metallica. In the interview you’ll hear the guys reflect on some of those star-studded collaborations and what to expect from The Soul Rebels in 2021 and beyond. At the end of the episode you’ll hear The Soul Rebels perform a pumping set from New Orleans. You can see videos of this set and all other Past, Present, Future, Live! performances on our show page or on the Osiris Media YouTube Channel. You'll find music from all the artists mentioned in this interview on our Past, Present, Future, Live! Spotify playlist. If you like what you hear, please give us a review on Apple Podcasts. As an itinerant bluesman, the singer and harmonica ace sought out giants like James Cotton and Junior Wells to uncover the mysteries of the dark art. The former collegiate swimming star did stints in Colorado, Chicago, and Austin playing with the likes of John Lee Hooker and Ronnie Earl before landing in New Orleans as a seasoned songwriter and bandleader. Johnny has a dozen award-winning solo releases, as well as celebrated collaborations with Anders Osborne and John Fohl, and is a member of the Voice of the Wetlands All-Stars with Tab Benoit, Cyril Neville and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux. Cyril Neville's career was launched when he joined his brother Art's band - The Meters, in 1970. His percussion and vocal skills added a new dimension to the band. From there brothers Aaron and Charles teamed with Art and Cyril to form the Grammy-award winning group, The Neville Brothers, in 1977. In 1998 Cyril released the first of 4 solo albums and then in 2012 formed Royal Southern Brotherhood (RSB) with Devon Allman, Mike Zito and other world-class musicians. In our June of 2012 interview, award-winning program director Ray White catches up with Cyril to talk about the newly formed Royal Southern Brotherhood band and their initial release. He also elaborates about his solo effort - Brand New Blues. RSB's latest project is titled Don't Look Back. In our showcase segment, Coool CAT's Lisa Davis features blues/rock musician Tinsley Ellis. With nearly 20 albums to his credit, this blazin' guitarist recently released Ice Cream In Hell, another stellar album in his repertoire. The Last Waltz 2019
Katrina som dundrade in över Louisiana och ödelade stora delar av New Orleans blir en av utgångspunkterna när vi gör en tidsresa i det som kallas för den amerikanska populärmusikens vagga. Möt rhythm and bluesspöken, genrevrakdelar, bounce-egon, låtsasindianer, sissys, översvallande livsglädje, bottenlös fattigdom och odödliga musiker. Mats Nileskär sammanstrålar med bland andra Art Neville, som gick bort tidigare i år, Allen Toussaint, Mia X, KLC, Fats Domino, Lil Wayne, Irma Thomas, Choppa, Aaron Neville, Cyril Neville, Big Freedia, Trombone Shorty och 5th Ward Weebie.

Episode 018 of *The Upful LIFE Podcast* returns with very special guest JON PHILLIPS, founder of Silverback Music, a management company based in Southern California. Jon is the former manager of Sublime- going back to the early 90's - and currently works with George Porter Jr., Fishbone, Dumpstaphunk, The Grouch and Eligh, Slightly Stoopid, among other successful contemporary artists. Jon and I have a little bit of a personal friendship and professional relationship over the past few years, but I don't really know him well at all. As such, it was like a class in session, as Jon took me back to the beginning of his long, strange trip in the music industry. Jon tells the tale of how he has carved his own lane in the game, doing so based on super-solid relationships, an ear for what's next, his penchant for putting the artist first, and he reflects on a humble and efficient approach to managing his eclectic roster at Silverback. Episode 018 begins with a short tribute to JamBase.com on the occasion of their 20th anniversary. Just wanted to take a few minutes to reflect on the impact that JamBase had on my life, my career, the culture, and so many other fantastic individuals who were crucial to La Costa Nostra for many moons. JamBase remains a crucial part of chronicling the culture and it was an absolute joy to celebrate their two decades of covering various jam scenes. JON PHILLIPS INTERVIEW STARTS AT 17:00 We begin with a bit about the city of New Orleans, and Jazz Fest, as that was where and when this interview was taking place. In addition to his personal history going to NOLA, Jon touches on the cosmic connection between Grateful Dead culture and New Orleans, from the Neville Brothers to getting busted on Bourbon and many points between. We also spoke a bit of the evolution of Jazz Fest as an event, and a culture unto itself. This was an interesting launching off point that connected our talk to Fest culture and NOLA funk, but allowed us to branch out as the conversation rolled on. We would return to NOLA a few times throughout the convo. Jon's experience in the music business had humble and serendipitous beginnings in SoCal, as he first connected with Bradley Nowell and Sublime. Jon was a major cog in the young band's operation as they rocketed towards success. He was personally asked by Bradley to be their manager, and he made it his personal mission to get Sublime signed, after much effort they made it happen at Gasoline Alley. Phillips was somebody who helped light the fuse for Sublime's meteoric rise to stardom, a gargantuan level of success, not just unprecedented but also something that Bradley sadly didn't live to enjoy. From the magic of the early days, to the special nature of his relationship with Nowell, to the warning signs and demon fears, when KROC first played “Date Rape” to Sublime trying to refuse to play the song at the KROC Weenie Roast, Jon takes us all down an emotional memory lane. Inevitably we discuss Bradley's tragic death from an overdose in May of 1996, and Jon is brutally honest about the way it all unfolded. Jon keeps it classy and places a focus on the triumph of the music that cannot and will not ever be denied. This is a powerful segment from someone who saw it all from the front lines. He pulls no punches yet at the same time shows such reverence for his fallen friend and his musical legacy. This is some of the realest shit this show has ever spoken. Rest in Power Bradley Nowell. From there he embarks on his life's work with Silverback Music, creating the company, signing the legendary Fishbone, and then setting out to develop another young band's career, this time with Slightly Stoopid, who came out of the Sublime diaspora. What Jon has overseen with the evolution of Stoopid is remarkable, and he explains a little bit of the grassroots nature of how the band built an empire, while the rest of the music industry chased it's tail in changing times. Stoopid has stayed ahead of the curve in developing their scene, their brand, and their culture, by staying true to themselves as fads come and go. Jon pulls back the curtain a little bit on how this band has set the bar for independent music, in so many creative ways. We also discuss his NOLA clients like Dumpstaphunk, and his long-standing relationship with Ian and Ivan Neville. And of course we had to touch on George Porter Jr, who Jon has been working with for several years as well. Jon takes us through the blow-by-blow of how Foundation of Funk with Eric Krasno beckoned Phil Lesh to jam at the House of Blues in NOLA, and what Phil was like to hang with late night at Jazz Fest. Not to mention a bit about the Funk & Co LOCKN set that featured George, Zigaboo, Ivan and Cyril Neville. Finish strong with a quick reflection on his clients The Grouch & Eligh, a West Coast underground hip-hop institution. Large up to Jon Phillips of Silverback Music for the phenomenal history lesson and engaging storytelling. SAM D'ARCANGELO of CANNABIS VOTER PROJECT : 1hr 11mins From there we transition to SAM D'ARCANGELO, Director of the Cannabis Voter Project, an arm of Headcount.org. Sam is a journalist and activist, and a Masters student at University of Texas in Austin. Sam also is a Louisiana native, and spent many years of his life in and around NOLA. Sam and I discuss Austin and the Crescent City early in the convo, before transitioning to the political process, cannabis law, and of course cannabis politics. Sam breaks down Headcount's Participation Row, and his role in the Cannabis Voter Project, which is on the road with Dead & Co, and has worked with Lettuce, among others. He and I have a spirited discussion around legalization that doesn't go precisely how you'd think. Stoked to be able to offer a platform to people like Sam, and organizations like Headcount and Cannabis Voter Project. *Vibe Junkie JAM of the Week* I received the news of Dr. John's passing just before this podcast went live. Scrapped the original Vibe Junkie JAM and instead we will have a tribute to Mac Rebennack, aka the Night Tripper. Please enjoy "Gris Gris" live from the Piknic Dutch Festival in Velsen, 1970. Condolences to Dr. John's family, friends, and millions of fans around the world. His music and legacy shall live on in the hearts and minds of all who were blessed to enjoy his myriad gifts. It's a pair of artist interviews for this week's show. First, Royal Wood joins us to talk about the making of his latest album, Ever After the Farewell, and the life-changing events that inspired it. The album is the product of the emotional roller coaster Royal experienced between father’s death and falling instantly in love with his now-wife just a few weeks apart. As well, Royal explains the unique writing and recording process for this record, often recording songs the same day he wrote them, and the difference between co-writing for someone else versus himself. Then, Michael Kaeshammer, the critically-acclaimed Canadian jazz and boogie-woogie pianist and vocalist, chats about his latest - and 12th - release, Something New. He explains the different mindset he took for this self-produced effort, and choosing and working with its various guest musicians, including Randy Bachman, Colin James, Cyril Neville, George Porter Jr., and more. Michael also talks touring China, blending genres, making experimental music at home, and even cooking.

[APWW PGM #458] [Originally aired in 2005] Aug. 29, 2015 is the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, and the catastrophic failure of the Mississippi River levees that put the city of New Orleans under water. In tribute to the city’s struggles of the last 10 years, we are rebroadcasting our Hip Deep program made in spring 2005, a few short months before life in New Orleans was turned upside down. “Living in New Orleans, Part 1″ takes you to the rambunctious street music scene in the Crescent City around Mardi Gras time. This is one town where kids still pick up tubas, and young brass bands have lots of work, parading along the same funky streets where jazz was born. We’ll get inside the world of the Mardi Gras Indians as Hip Deep producer Ned Sublette, who is spending the year on the ground in New Orleans, talks with musician and educator Big Chief Donald Harrison; Sylvester Francis of the Backstreet Cultural Museum; scholar and former New Orleans resident Joseph Roach of Yale University, author of Cities of the Dead; and Vicki Mayer of Tulane University. We’ll hear music from Kermit Ruffins and Rebirth Brass Band, Cyril Neville and the Uptown All-Stars, and Bo Dollis and the Wild Magnolias. Produced by Ned Sublette.

Robert Mercurio, a founding member of Galactic is our guest this week. If you are not already familiar with them, Galactic is an acclaimed Funk/Soul band from New Orleans. They began as an instrumental band highly influenced by New Orleans groups such as The Meters, but now they incorporate lead vocals more often, and are lucky enough to have worked with New Orleans legends such as Allan Toussaint, Irma Thomas, and Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Joining them on this tour is vocalist Cyril Neville of the Neville Brothers. They came through Atlanta Friday night and we were lucky enough to get Robert to sit down with us at The Variety Playhouse to do a podcast. Enjoy! Included on this podcast are two songs from Galactic's new CD "Ya-Ka-May". The first song is "Heart Of Steel", and the second is "Dark Water". www.galacticfunk.com Please check out the Two Faces Radio Facebook page, and we also now have a Two Faces Radio Twitter Page!

It's a tweener week in The Roadhouse - the week between Christmas and New Years. With a freewheeling feeling, the 253rd Roadhouse fills an hour with a big variety of blues. Lonnie Brooks, Siegel-Schwall Band, Dave Spector & The Bluebirds, Peter Green, and Cyril Neville create a mixture you might not hear anywhere else. But you'll agree it's a mixture that makes for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

The 217th Roadhouse takes a turn down a narrow gravel road to ... a roadhouse. The selections in this virtual roadhouse would fit perfectly in any real roadhouse anywhere in the world. Walter Trout, Cyril Neville, Keb Mo, Muddy Waters, and W.C. Clark headline the bill in the 217th Roadhouse with a full slate of other great artists in support. It's an hour of blues bor and best experienced in the dark, hot, crowded little club we call The Roadhouse.

He may have dropped the “Jumping Johnny” moniker years ago, but on the Troubled Men Podcast, it's not about how high you can jump, it's about how low you can go. Topics include a new high, a deadly storm, Gompers, “Uncut Gems,” a law school brouhaha, a prayer call, an Estes rocket launch, meeting Joe Cabral and Rod Hodges, the Colorado connection, shaving down, a favorite stroke, Mark Spitz, Fort Collins, harmonica science, Howard Levy, elevation, soloists, a Bo Diddley story, a nickname explained, “Poor Man's Paradise,” the Subdudes, a breakthrough record, Trina Shoemaker, “Homeland,” Luther and Cody Dickinson, playing lefty, a Blaze Foley bio pic, Ethan Hawke, Charlie Sexton, breakups, and much more.
