They don't learn the same. They're not motivated the same. They don't think the same.[00:11:59] I was pretty scoreboard focused.[00:12:48] As I progressed, both in age and experience, I really learned that, and as jumping into a head coach, I learned there's so much more to the game.[00:14:18] I've learned that because of how involved parents are, I think more so now, that, you have to find creative ways to implement them into your culture and your program.[00:16:18] And ultimately, as you said, we're here to serve the kids.[00:17:30] Before that parent comes in, I will give them a list and say these are the things that I want you to watch during practice, and I want you to take mental notes. [00:21:23] I didn't understand culture.[00:21:42] I think delegation is really hard when you've always been kind of a go getter, do it yourself, I got this, kind of a person.[00:22:32] I think as a young leader, I had a tendency to tell people what I want them to do.[00:23:38] Empowering my assistants is very important in making sure that those athletes know how much trust and respect and love I have for those coaches is extremely important.[00:23:58] Don't repeat yourself…just say it quietly.[00:25:47] I really moved away from assigning captains to earning captains.[00:29:57] Lot of friction because I think a lot of AAU programs, and it's not all, but a lot of AAU programs, are not making it about the kids. [00:30:18] You'll also find a lot of really, really good club directors who understand it, who get it, who do it the right way.[00:30:40] I've always been in schools where I have maybe one or two kids that pick up a basketball outside of basketball season. [00:31:18] I think that's just saying, look, when you're with them, you're with them. But when you're with us, you're with us and this is how we do it here.[00:33:55] I think it's also okay to form relationships with those coaches. I mean, I think it's the only way we can ultimately have success for young athletes is that we have to create partnerships.[00:35:27] I kind of figured out who I was, who I wanted to be and the culture that I wanted to create.[00:36:20] If you're disciplined, you don't have to be asked to do something.[00:37:31] He calls, his players, his living trophies. [00:38:15] I believe you should always leave the place better than you found it.[00:40:43] At the beginning of practice every day is we'll just have everybody come in, circle it up.[00:41:13] We come in and we all put our thumbs up, and then we go, okay, now, where are we?[00:42:13] I am also showing my vulnerability as a coach.[00:46:00] Let the scoreboard be a byproduct of the work that you do.[00:46:15] Don't be afraid to overcommunicate.[00:46:22] You have to have balance.[00:46:41] I think some years I've ended up paid paying myself to coach, because of gas.[00:47:54] I play music in the gym.[00:48:26] I need to put as much value and time into my relationships at home with my husband and my kids that I do with other people's kids.[00:49:39] When I get a kid that has good foot work, I'm like, okay, who taught you this? Call them and tell them, thank you.[00:50:09] I teach every player every skillset.[00:52:05] Run a high school clinic and teach the parents the skillsets that you want to teach the kids.

The Blue & Gold more than doubled both its overall (13) and Atlantic 10 (7) win totals in year two. The victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions was La Salle's first over a Power 5 program since November 2015 and first over a Big 10 school since taking down Northwestern in December of 1988. The Explorers also swept Big 5 and A-10 rival Saint Joseph's for the first time ever. A gritty win over the Hawks inside Hagan Arena was the first since 1998. After earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament with a victory over Marist in the MAAC title game, the Bobcats earned a No. 9 seed and defeated Miami (Fla.) in the opening round. In 2016-17, MacGillivray helped Quinnipiac to a pair of upset wins in NCAA Tournament action, defeating Marquette and Miami (Fla.) en route to the Sweet 16. The Bobcats won four conference championships and averaged 26 wins over thatt seven year span, and head coach Tricia Fabbri won MAAC Coach of the Year four times with the contributions of MacGillivray. Ohio.  We both attended tiny high schools in the northwest/central part of the state (she graduated with 39 students), and our paths crossed when she  attended a basketball camp at Ohio Northern University as a junior high student.  I happened to be her coach for the week, because I pulled off a hell of a trade on draft night!  Juli reminded me that our team went on to win a championship that week.  She has had an amazing journey over the nearly 30 years since that camp, and at just 42 years old, she is leading her second college program to amazing success.  From working in a hospital and helping coach high school girls basketball in Columbus, Ohio, to a two-year graduate assistant position at Defiance College to the head coach at Lewis & Clark College near Portland Oregon at 26 years of age.  A decade later & after leading L & C to 4 NCAA Tournament berths, Juli was named head coach at Transylvania University.  In 6 years, Coach Fulks has led the Transy women to a record of 137-31!  We talk everything from coaching to leadership to possibly completing her PhD!  Please enjoy my visit with Juli Fulks of Transylvania University. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-cook0/support

I had the unbelievable fortune of serving as an assistant coach to Michele Durand for 3 seasons. In that role I observed one of, if not, the most loyal, dedicated, hard working and humble leaders in this profession. The numbers are undeniable. With 30 years of head coaching experience at two universities, more than 400 wins, 6 conference championships and multiple NCAA Division III tournament appearances, including a trip to an Elite Eight as part of a 30-1 season, Michele Durand has been tremendously successful as a head coach. What the numbers don't reveal is the foundation upon which that success has been built. Building or rebuilding any basketball program is a process and a challenge that simply cannot happen by accident. Coach Durand successfully built/rebuilt two separate programs and at the same time grew, developed and improved herself during the journey. As she transitions to her new role as an Assistant Athletic Director, I was fortunate to get some time to talk with her about her journey, her coaching philosophy and her reflections on a career that has been truly outstanding. Please enjoy today's conversation with Michele Durand. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jon-cook0/support

She begins the 2019-20 campaign with an all-time coaching record of 79-45, 38-12 in California Pacific Conference play. Hopkins-Chery’s 79 wins are good for second among any other active head coach in the conference. A native of Essex, England, Hopkins-Chery brings both playing and coaching experience to UC Merced. In England, Hopkins-Chery attended Greensward College and attributes much of her stardom in the game of basketball to the Swifts Basketball Club along with Greensward. While with Swifts and Greensward, both teams were yearly national championship contenders, while she was a player and a coach. She first earned international playing experience with the Under 16 and Under 20 England teams and eventually England’s senior women’s nation team in 2002. Hopkins-Chery attended and played basketball at Jefferson College where she was an NJCAA Academic All-American Scholar-Athlete in 2005, All-Region Academic Team member in 2005 and a two-time MCCAC Academic All-Conference honoree. Additionally, the Vikings were conference champions in 2004 and 2005 while she was a part of the program. After two years at Jefferson she transferred to Park University where she became a standout on the women’s basketball team. As a player at Park she helped lead a Pirates squad to the programs first-ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament in 2005-06 after winning a conference title in the Association of Independent Institutions (AII). Hopkins-Chery was also honored as an AII-Academic All-Conference member and an NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete in 2006 (the first of three times she received this honor). shopkins-chery@ucmerced.edu @CoachSarah_SHC4 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support

In 2014, Angeli was promoted to the Associate Director of Athletics for Marketing position. As head women's basketball coach, Angeli wasted no time in getting CCNY Women's Basketball back to relevancy. After his first season as head coach in 2014-15 was marred with injuries to several key players, Angeli's team bounced back his second season in 2015-16, posting a 17-10 overall record (11-5 conference) and a trip to the conference semi-finals for the first time since the 2001-02 season. It was also the first time since 2002-03 that CCNY WBB finished with a winning record. The turnaround was also 3rd best in the nation for NCAA Division 3 women's basketball teams that season. For his efforts during the 2015-16 season, Angeli was awarded the CUNY Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and the ECAC Metro Region Coach of the Year. Angeli is the first women's basketball coach at CCNY to win the COY award since the 1992-93 season and is also only the third women's basketball coach in school history to achieve this honor. Prior to arriving at City College, Angeli has amassed an impressive coaching resume all over the world and has included successful stops at the high school, college and professional levels. Most recently, Angeli was the top assistant women's basketball coach at NCAA division one Seattle University from 2009 to 2011. During the off-season at Seattle U, Angeli was an advance scout for the then WNBA Eastern Conference Champion Washington Mystics. Angeli boasts over 35 successful years in the basketball profession as a player, coach, administrator, author and Internet entrepreneur. The coaching community has recognized Angeli for his success in the basketball profession throughout his career. He has produced over 20 best-selling books and DVD’s on basketball as well as speaking at various coaching clinics throughout the country. Most notably, in the Spring of 2014, Angeli was selected to speak at the Assistant Coaches Roundtable during the Women's Final Four in Nashville, TN.
