In this episode, Diane Little and Dr. Rita interview a pioneer of public service in North Carolina Surluta Anthony was the first Black woman elected to Monroe City Council—despite Monroe has a majority Black population. Now elected for the third turn, Ms. Anthony provides valuable insights and advice on what it means to be in public service and how to do it well. Miss Anthony shares how she ran for office to “be at the table” of decision-making and how she stayed through her principles of “Service before self' along with a great dose of courage and political savviness. She was influenced by Robert F. Williams' activism, also a local to Monroe. She speaks about how she thrived in public service, how it's her purpose, how she found that out and how she brought DEI work to Monroe.A personal favorite: she shared what is missing from our current discourse on public service: feeling valued and capable of making a difference. Surluta Belton Anthony was born October 4, 1947 at home on Winchester Ave to educators Dr. Edward and Mrs. Christine Belton. She had a happy nurturing childhood in a Christian, socially and civic aware household. She talked early and read well at four. She had an early love of community fostered by her parents. She attended the segregated Winchester Ave School from first to twelfth grades , serving as class President in the sixth, eighth, tenth and twelfth grades. Her leadership skills extended to North Carolina Central University where she was president of the Annie Day Shepherd Freshman Women's Dorm and representative to student government. Surluta is a graduate of Anson Community College, Pfeiffer University and the Sure Theological Institute.Taking office in 2013, Surluta was the first Black woman elected to Monroe City Council; she is currently serving her third term. Resources: Surluta Anthony's email: sulutaanthony@gmail.comOriginally recorded on June 25, 2024.Support the Show.To recomend a guest contact us at: media@FierroConsultingllc.com To support Collective Power join our Patreon

In Lee's own words: I was born and raised in Concord, NC.  Just Northeast of Charlottle, it was a town of 25,000 back then.  As long as I can remember, music was around.  Whether it be the turntables or 8 tracks; where my older brothers played rock and roll of the 60s & 70s, Dad listened to older country artists or Mom's Pontiac Bonneville, which seemed to always have the hits playing through it's car stereo from either 61AM Big Ways, 95FM WROQ or 1100 WBT-AM…Music was always a comforting companion.       Not coming from a particularly musical family other than them playing the radio, the drum bug came from the next door neighbor playing and then taking it from there.  I was playing with records by 8-9 years old; began school band in 7th grade with the natural progression through high school playing in marching, jazz and symphonic bands throughout.       Since music was not viewed in my family as something you pursued as a career, I studied English Literature & Writing at Pfeiffer University until my senior year in 1990-91 when long time friend and a musical mentor, Rick Lee, called and said, "I'm forming a new band and you're the drummer."  This was the beginnings of my music career and the 2019 Carolina Beach Music Hall Of Fame band, Too Much Sylvia.       After leaving TMS in 1994, I played with a few different bands out of Charlotte and all around the East Coast through 1996.  In September 1996, a weeklong trip to Nashville, TN put the hook in and I moved to Music City on January 11, 1997.  Fortunately, I got club and road work pretty quickly while learning constantly along the way.  The idea was to make a living while seeing the world and that plan came to fruition over the years backing artists like Gary Allan, Mark Chesnutt, Heidi Newfield, Kelly Pickler, Loverboy, Kendell Marvel and, now, Hank Williams Jr.  Also, to be able to play and share time with some of the finest musicians & people along the way has just been magic. It's a ride I can't get off of...Nor do I want to.      Along with time on the road with Hank Jr., I offer drum/percussion tracks to any clients out of the "Boom Boom Drum Room", do club/showcase/session work around town and spend time caring for my family.  It's never boring and music is STILL a comforting companion.     Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!!   Some Things That Came Up:    -2:00 Moved to Nashville Jan 11, 1997 along with Jim Riley and Pat McDonald  -3:40 Followed the band Sugar Creek, who played on “Star Search” -4:10 Joining the melodic rock band “Too Much Sylvia” right before Nirvana exploded -6:15 Carolina beach music  -7:00 Checked out Nashville in August of 1996. You've met one Dubberly! Now it's time to meet Brian's other half! Ellyn Benson Dubberly is a missionary with the General Board of Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church serving as a leadership development coordinator in Central America. She was commissioned in June 2013.Ellyn is a native of North Carolina, where she is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Rocky Mount in the North Carolina Annual Conference. She received a Bachelor of Social Work from APPALACHIAN STATE UNIVERSITY in Boone, North Carolina, and a master's degree in Christian Education from Pfeiffer University, Charlotte, in 2011. She also holds a United Methodist certification in Chrisitan education and children's ministry. Ellyn has worked as a pre-kindergarten teacher, and from 2005 to 2013 was director of children's ministries at her church in Rocky Mount. Her parents exposed Ellyn to mission at an early age and she came to understand, she says, that “God's love is way bigger than his love for me and my loved ones; that it stretched across the world.” She says that God has given her a desire to share her gifts with others. “I am humbled to be a light of Christ wherever he plants me, and am strengthened by faithful trust in the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit.”Her first mission trip was to Puerto Rico when she was in the fourth grade, the first of many such experiences. “The majority of our work was throughout Central America,” she recalls. “I remember struggling to understand why there were people with so little, when I saw so much materialism in my home country….Then I realized that while others might be poor in material things, I was poor in spiritual things. The people I met on those earliest trips were a witness to me of the joy that is present in a living, dedicated relationship with Jesus Christ.”Ellyn's interest in Central America began with her husband, Brian, who felt called to serve the young church there as a long-term volunteer. At first, he planned to spend three months in Central America and three at home, but came to realize more concentrated attention was needed there. During the pandemic, most of us started conducting psychotherapy sessions through 100% Telehealth. "The Therapist In The Attic," Leah Leynor joins the show to talk about her transition from her thriving private psychotherapy practice office to the attic. Plus, Leah speaks about her consulting work and what private practice owners are struggling with today as the pandemic winds down. Later, we talk all about becoming an insurance-based practice and what sorts of things you need to consider before accepting insurance. Tune in as we chat about diversifying your income, negotiating rates with insurance companies, and marketing your private practice. Meet Leah Leynor Leah Leynor provides a variety of counseling services to families and individual children, teens, and adults in Cary, North Carolina. She holds a Master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pfeiffer University, a massage therapy diploma from the American and European Massage Clinic, and a Bachelor's degree in political science from Rider University. She is a certified hypnotherapist with specialized training in trauma counseling and family systems. She is a proud member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) and the North Carolina Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (NCAMFT). The Therapist In The Attic During the pandemic, Leah ultimately moved her practice from in-person to her attic. The attic was the perfect place for privacy and for consulting with clients. Whenever Leah called herself the therapist in the attic, people would laugh. For Leah, the attic was a way to connect with others in complex, uncertain, and stressful times. Plus, when you think about it, we are all somewhat "stuck in the attic." Leah hopes to relate to the varied experiences many of us have been experiencing in these uncertain times. What Private Practice Owners Are Struggling With Today Most private practice owners have a high level of anxiety because of the pandemic. Many people question if private practice is the right move for them or if they need to start changing their business plans. Plus, they have anxiety around dealing with stressed-out clients while managing their businesses' administrative side. On top of private practice responsibilities, many owners are looking after their children participating in online classes. Finally, people are considering if life will go back to the way it was or adjust to a new normal. Becoming An Insurance-Based Practice When thinking about becoming an insurance-based practice, there are a few questions you should ask yourself first. -      What brought you to this decision? -      Where do you see your practice going? -      What would you like to see in your practice? You don't have as much control over your fees with insurance-based practices because the insurance companies determine it. So, you need to set your expectations accordingly. You can't just ask the insurance company to change your prices. Plus, you'll want to consider how your marketing and website efforts are going. You'll need to ensure the right people see your advertising when using insurance panels. Negotiating A Higher Fee From An Insurance Company Negotiating a higher fee will depend on the insurance company. Sometimes, you have to put the negotiation in writing. The insurance company may ask what your proposed rate would be. Other times, you need to find the contract negotiator representative and call them directly. Then, you can start the negotiation process. You have to find out what the process is for the specific insurance company. If the insurance company is not taking negotiations, then you should figure out why. The best time to negotiate is a couple of months before recredentialing. Former Pfeiffer head coach Jordan Stampler joined Justin Haire's staff as Director of Player Development in August 2020. Stampler came to Campbell after leading the Pfeiffer baseball program for the last three seasons, and five total years with the Falcons, previously serving as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. “We are very excited to have Coach Stampler join our staff,” said Haire. “He brings a wealth of experience and knowledge that will not only help our student-athletes develop, but will also help our coaching staff to grow and get better. He is someone that I have known for a long time, and are very fortunate to be able to add someone with so much value to our program.” Stampler helped lead Pfeiffer to a Conference Carolinas Championship game appearance in 2016 despite entering the tournament as the number six seed. Pfeiffer upset top-seed Erskine, coming within one game of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In 2017, Stampler assisted as the program made another Cinderella run in the conference tournament. In the opener, Pfeiffer defeated the No. 1 seed and top-ranked team in all of Division II Mount Olive by a score of 9-2. Pfeiffer used an 8-run sixth inning and scored all eight runs off Bruce Zimmermann who would later be drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 5th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. In 2018, during the Falcons' first year of NCAA DIII competition, Stampler led the program to a record of 31-7, topping the conference in the regular season. Pfeiffer also set multiple school records in 2018, including team batting average at .348, team on-base percentage at .447 and overall winning percentage at .775. In 2019, Stampler's Falcons captured the ECAC Division III title with a 9-7 win over Grove City College, finishing the year with a 30-8 record and a 17-6 mark in USA South play. Stampler helped Falcon great Nick Richmond to a career year as well, who would secure a spot in the illustrious Cape Cod Collegiate Summer League, and later signed by the Detroit Tigers. A native of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Stampler began his coaching career at Adrian College as the program's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator in 2014, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 33-15 mark and an MIAA regular season and conference tournament title. Adrian advanced all the way to the NCAA Midwest Regional, winning three games in the NCAA Tournament. In 2015, Stampler moved back to his alma mater, USC Upstate, as a volunteer coach for half a year before being promoted to assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. At Upstate, Stampler coached Tyler Jackson who was later signed as a free agent to the Seattle Mariners organization. In addition to Jackson and Richmond, Stampler has coached six others who have gone on to play professionally. Kirby Lambert (Roswell Invaders), Derek Perry (Lake Erie Crushers), Blake Whitney (Chicago Cubs), Sam Fischer (Gateway Grizzlies), Ryan Darrow (Hickory Crawdads) and Ian Mikowski (Eastside Diamond Hoppers), while Charlie Carpenter was a 26th round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves before returning to school. Stampler played two years at USC Upstate, seeing time in 108 games while tallying 88 runs, 113 hits and 42 runs batted in. His 44 runs scored in each of the 2012 and 2013 seasons rank him fourth in program history and his 29 walks in 2013 places him fifth. Additionally, Stampler owns the top two marks in Spartan history for most hit by pitches in a season, getting plunked 18 teams in 2012 and 16 in 2013. He graduated from USC Upstate with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2013, going on to earning a M.S. in Leadership from Pfeiffer University in 2017. He is married to his wife, Hannah.

Part 1 of 2What a great talk with the great Lee Kelley!  Drummer for Hank Williams Jr.https://leekelleyondrums.com/Lee:  I was born and raised in Concord, NC. Hope to see y'all at a show sometime!!September 1989-Present: Freelance Studio/Touring Musician--Drums & Percussion National/International Acts*Click on Name for Artist Site or Apple Music link for their Music*May 2019-Present: Hank Williams Jr. (Apple Music)November 2017-Present: Kendell Marvel (Apple Music)September 2016-September 2018: Jeff BatesJanuary 2017-March 2017: Subbing Drummer-Loverboy (Apple Music)January 2016-September 2016: Time Off for Shoulder Surgery & Recovery-Elite Sports MedicineMarch 2015-May 2015: Subbing Drummer-Aaron Tippin (Apple Music)March 2010-July 2014: Heidi Newfield (Apple Music)March 2013-May 2013: Subbing Drummer-Kellie Pickler (Apple Music)February 2012-October 2012: Chris Knight (Apple Music)August 2008-Mid. 2012: Jeremy McComb (Apple Music)March 2003-October 2008: Mark Chesnutt (Apple Music)February 2007-April 2007: Subbing Drummer-Trent Tomlinson (Apple Music)February 2002-August 2005: Shannon Lawson (Apple Music)November 2001-February 2002: Ricky Van Shelton (Apple Music)March 1998-February 2002: Gary Allan (Apple Music)
