Episode 69: A Conversation with a Champion Special Guest: Candace Motes, Indiana Wesleyan University Women's Volleyball Head Coach Won the NAIA National Championship. Every person has a different philosophy and there's no two leadership philosophies that are exactly the same. Background Information: When did you start coaching? I got into volleyball and it took me to an opportunity to go play at the University of Nebraska Omaha. That's where I became knowledgeable as a coach in a sense being a player around great coaches I Wasn't thriving in that culture at all and it was becoming more of a heartache for me So I left and went to a Christian University. What made you want to be a coach?Assistant Coach for the team I played on and enjoyed it Was recommended to take over as my college coach left. Coaching peers - “One of the hardest things that I did”“When God calls you to something and you, even if fear, go towards it, it changes your life.” Coached at Alma Mater for 10 years before coaching in Indiana. How long have you been in your current position at Indiana Wesleyan? Coaching at Indiana Wesleyan for 22 years There's been hardships, there's been growth, but overall it's been a great experience for me. Team Background: How did you feel going into this season? Did you know that this was going to be the season? No, I didn't. There were lessons learned from each individual. But for me personally, I did not have the trust that I needed. Didn't see this team for the potential that they had. I was very critical, skill set wise, The grind of continuing to have the vision of what it took to get to the highest level and going through that journey. Chasing little goals What do you think contributed to this being the championship winning season?Focused on Building Culture Adjusted practices to reflect this priority Brought in a mindset coach Took an international tripThe value of being uncomfortable Doing something together Serving Recruited great players Facing Obstacles: Not always just players and their drama Coaches can bring in obstacles too Injuries Keep the mindset in a positive direction Helping our culture stay together Understanding roles Who is someone who has really influenced your leadership? Debbie Brown from Notre Dame. John Dunning from Stanford. Ruth Nelson - Olympian coach https://www.theartofcoachingvolleyball.com/profile-ruth-nelson/ Has really shown me to stay in it till you don't have a passion anymore, but don't leave because you're believing lies that tell you that you should be done and do something different. BOOK: “Starts with Why”, by Simon Sinek. Coach Candace's Final Thoughts: Don't be afraid to change your thoughts. Don't be afraid. First of all, for young coaches, don't try to be anybody else that you think you should be. I have to be who I am. And I have to be who God created me to be. And I have to be the person that he wants me to be influencing in the moment that I'm in. But then, as you continue to go, continue to stay grounded in, “I can change, and I can make changes.” Amazon Book Link: Start With Why, Simon Sinek - https://a.co/d/1SQnw4G Special Thanks To: –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Work it out by LiQWYD https://soundcloud.com/liqwyd Creative Commons — Attribution 3.0 Unported — CC BY 3.0 Free Download / Stream: https://bit.ly/l_work-it-out Music promoted by Audio Library https://youtu.be/erSmdVocHO0 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
As we make our approach to 100 episodes we begin our tribute series to the coaches who made a difference in Kovo's life as a young man. What better place to start than the man who so impacted Coach Kovo's while serving as the Head Football Coach of the Austin College Kangaroos in Sherman, TX. He never left his beloved Austin College and is now the Director of Athletics and Kinesiology Department Chair - welcome David Norman to the show! - Growing up in the East Texas town of Big Sandy as the Head Coach's son and bearing witness to his father leading the 1st ever integrated football team in Big Sandy history. A job he did so well that not only did it lead to state championship rings, but an eventual run to the town mayorship! - Coach is our 1st ever alumnus to win championships in THREE different capacities! 1st as a football player at Big Sandy, then our 1st collegiate champion as he was a member of the iconic 1981 NAIA National Championship football team at Austin College, and finally he even won one as a coach when he was a part of the Denison Yellowjacket 1984 State Championship team!! - Save for the stint at Denison and very early coaching experience at the current State Champion Gunter Tigers, it's been all AC since 1989! Most people think of David Norman, Head Football Coach, but what not a lot of people may know is he was also one heck of a baseball coach for the Kangaroos! - Coach Norman beautifully puts things in perspective about the power of athletics when he shared the story of how at the 10-year reunion of the 1981 National Championship team they put the game film on and were hanging on every play reliving the memory of that game. By 20 years, the game was going in the background but the players were more focused on remembering the funny things like the long bus trip to Sul Ross University, all things that happen to all teams and that would have happened even without that championship. By the 40th reunion they didn't even talk about the game at all! The games fade away, but you are always left with the power of that brotherhood. POWERFUL. - Finally as the ultimate Kangaroo who first arrived on campus in 1979 and essentially never left, we are treated to David Norman's Austin College Kangaroo Mt. Rushmore!! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. Spend a few minutes with Ken and you can hear the coach in his voice. Given the coverage of the topics, I've titled this episode: "From Basketball to Business Coaching and Life's Lessons Learned." This week on Inside the Headset, we are featuring the 2021 AFCA NAIA Regional Coaches of the year. These coaches include Lindsey Wilson College Coach Chris Oliver, Southwestern College Coach Brad Griffin and Texas Wesleyan University Coach Joe Prud'homme. Chris Oliver recently completed his 12th and final season as the head coach of the Blue Raider football program. This past spring Coach Oliver lead his team to an undefeated 11-0 record and took home the first NAIA National Championship in program history. Coach Oliver has been the head coach at Lindsey Wilson since the inception of the football program in 2010. Over the past eight seasons the Blue Raiders have made the playoffs seven times and have won multiple Mid-South Conference division titles under Coach Olivers direction. Prior to Lindsey Wilson, Oliver spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio Dominican. Brad Griffin will be entering his eighth season at the helm of the Southwestern Moundbuilders in 2022. This past season Coach Griffin led his team to a 9-2 overall record while winning a share of the KCAC Conference regular season title and earning an invite to the NAIA playoffs. During the 2020 season, Griffin led the Moundbuilders to their first national ranking since 1999. Prior to taking the reins at Southwestern, Griffin spent 11 seasons at William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa where he served as the Defensive Coordinator while working with the Linebackers. He has worked for both Point Guard College and Northwest Basketball Camps, which are the two largest camps in the United States. This past season Bostwick returned to Oklahoma Wesleyan University and led his team back to the NAIA DII Sweet 16. Bostwick considers coaching a ministry and runs his program like a family. “Our camps are provide excellent high level basketball skills training, but we also invest valuable time in teaching our campers how to include their faith in their game along with teaching the value of leadership, hard work and character.” This past October, Bostwick was asked by a close coaching friend whom he had been blessed to pour into and influence spiritually the following question. “If you were going to start a new ministry, then what would it be?” They both knew the answer was to be an encourager to coaches and help them grow spiritually. From that conversation, Bostwick began praying and in his spirit was birthed “SPIRIT LED COACH”. The mission of the ministry is to both encourage and empower coaches. On March 3, Bostwick launched a movement called SLC3 which challenges coaches to take their walk with Christ to another level. He has a big vision for the future of the ministry, but understands it will take time and a move of the Spirit. The first step is a Christian Coaches Clinic July 19-21 called the SLC3 Experience. In addition to Coach Bostwick’s professional accolades, he considers his greatest success to be at home, where he and his wife of 25 years enjoy raising their four children and are thrilled to bring their family back to their Bartlesville home. @Coach_Bostwick --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/kevin-furtado/support
