It looks like a rematch is coming in November, but young Colorado voters like University of Denver student Aidan Evans aren't thrilled over the Biden-Trump face-off for the second straight presidential election. "I think Joe Biden has done a fine job as president overall. But I don't think he should be in the office again. I'll be voting for him because that's my only option, but no 82-year-old should be in the presidency, regardless of their politics," said Evans. The University of Denver held a watch party as the results came in last night. Colorado was one of 16 states voting in yesterday's presidential primary. In fact, it was the only race on the ballot. Voters made their voices heard, choosing President Biden and former President Trump as the nominees. At last check, both had more than 400,000 votes to secure their party nominations. "I think that if we are forced to, we'll vote for Biden overwhelmingly against Trump," said another University of Denver student, Sergio Hernandez. In this episode I'm fortunate to welcome two coaches who have won college national titles. Julianne Sitch holds multiple school records and accolades at DePaul University and was recently inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame. Congratulations Julianne! She went on to play professionally in the US, Australia, and Sweden. As a coach, she was the women's assistant coach at the University of Chicago and in the professional ranks as an assistant with the Chicaco Red Stars in the NWSL. She returned to the University of Chicago and led the men's soccer team to an undefeated record culminating in a national championship. She is now the head coach of the women's soccer team at the University of Denver. Returning to the podcast is Jamie Gunderson, who is the head coach of women's soccer at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, VA. Jamie has yet to lose as head coach. We now know that Democrats will keep the Senate (perhaps even expand it by a seat) and that Republicans will narrowly take the House. This is a massive underperformance for Republicans.Along with a lot of other people, I'm interested in understanding what happened – and specifically, how the Dobbs decision and the abortion question might have influenced this election – if at all. So, my guest today is a former colleague of mine, Dr. Joshua Wilson – Professor and Chair of the Political Science Department at the University of Denver and Associate Editor of the Law & Policy academic journal. Dr. Wilson has written and published extensively about abortion politics – and other things – including the books The New States of Abortion Politics, The Street Politics of Abortion, and most recently, Separate but Faithful: The Christian Right's Radical Struggle to Transform Law and Legal Culture with co-author Amanda Hollis-Brusky. His research has also been published in numerous academic journals and appeared in mass media outlets, such as Newsweek, Christian Science Monitor, Washington Post, and Politico – to name just a few. We talk about how anti-abortion activists manipulated the legal landscape on abortion issues over the decades in such a way that they primed an entirely new political debate and pursued strategies that culminated in the overturning of Roe. We talk about what this might look like moving forward, if the national Republican Party has an appetite for a nationwide abortion ban, and if the Dobbs decision cost Republicans what – by all accounts – should have been an overwhelming retaking of Congress. We also talk about the state of American politics and why Donald Trump leaving the political arena won't solve the problem of political violence in the United States. In his book, he suggests several proposals that include abandoning the LSAT and instead developing new admission criteria, with more of a focus on teaching justice and service. Other suggestions he mentions are allowing admission to a larger cohort, adding something akin to California's Baby Bar at the conclusion of the 1L year, and greater integration and expansion of experiential learning throughout the curriculum. Professor Thomson also shares his weekly newsletter, called the Chalk Board Life, which he started amid the pandemic. He shares in his newsletter reflections on the core of teaching and how to preserve the heart in teaching regardless of the delivery method. He also tells us about the upcoming conference he and his colleagues are hosting in Denver, the Hybrid and Online Learning Pedagogy Conference, which will take place September 22-24, 2022, at Sturm College of Law in Denver. Of all the motivational buzzwords out there, the term ‘character' is thrown around a lot. Hiring managers looking for people with ‘high character,' managers say that random exercises ‘build character,' so on and so forth. But what does character actually look like? What does it mean? Coach Melissa Kutcher knows the importance of character. It's how she led the University of Denver Women's Gymnastics team to 22 consecutive NCAA finals appearances, 2 NCAA individual championships, the 2021 Big 12 Championship, and 5 team NCAA appearances. Since her appointment to head coach at University of Denver's Women's Gymnastics in 1998 she's been awarded the 2019 National Coach of the Year Award, a 2x Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year, 2002s WGC's Coach of the Year, and a 6x recipient of the North Central Region Coach of the Year. Every year Coach Kutcher is tasked with creating a high performing team while constantly letting go of one batch of her star athletes, while also welcoming a brand new class of student athletes. She gets the importance of building a strong culture, and the importance of recruiting people who can develop character. In a time where the members of your workforce can fluctuate more rapidly than ever, knowing how to develop a winning culture amongst the ups and downs of recruiting and losing people is an invaluable skill, one that Coach Kutcher has mastered during her tenure at University of Denver. Suter (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) is a Professor in the Department of Communication Studies and Affiliated Faculty in the Gender and Women's Studies Program at the University of Denver. She identifies as a feminist, social-justice-oriented interpersonal and family communication scholar. She views the family as a politicized institution animated by the broader discursive, material, and political environment. Primary contexts of study include transracial, international adoption and lesbian co-motherhood. Recently she developed the Critical Interpersonal and Family Communication (CIFC) heuristic, calling for the centering of power, praxis, and reflexivity in contemporary studies of relationships and families. This work appears in the the Journal of Family Communication, Communication Monographs, and Communication Theory. She lives with her partner and two daughters in Denver, Colorado. Welcome back to another episode of The Suitcase and The Scribe with Mike McKenna and Scott Burnside, only on Daily Faceoff. Mike and Scott were joined today by special guest David Carle. Carle is the Head Coach of the University of Denver Pioneers. The Pioneers recently won their ninth NCAA National Championship after beating Minnesota State University 5-1. Carle spoke about the run to the final game and how the team came together. He talked about the team's leadership from players like Bobby Brink, who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers last week. He also dove into his career and how he became the coach of the University of Denver. Before Carle joined the show, Mike and Scott spoke about the NHL's playoff picture. The Eastern Conference is set with all eight teams clinching spots; however, the Western Conference still has plenty to play for, with the Vancouver Canucks, Vegas Golden Knights, and LA Kings still battling for spots in the Pacific Division. Mike also spoke about some goaltending decisions that need to be made, especially in Minnesota and St Louis. Andrew Schnackenberg is a professor at the University of Denver. In leu of a formal description, I shall attach my Linked in recommendation: Professor Schnackenberg was one of the best teachers I've ever had, and certainly the best I found in the Daniels College of Business. I'm truly torn on which was more fun: going to his class or pronouncing his last name. Joy ensued from both. In all seriousness, Schnack had an incredible way of taking the information that had been presented to me countless times at DCB and made it come to life. I truly believe that we only learn things that we think are important, and he was able to uniquely present information in a way that made me understand why and how it would be beneficial to me moving forward. He also met with me countless times outside of class and gave wide reaching advice that I still draw on to this day.
