Joe graduated from Lake Superior State University, with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and received a Master of Science in Environmental Science from the University of Michigan. Joe received his Juris Doctor from the University Of Detroit Mercy School Of Law. Immediately after graduating from Lake Superior State, Joe began a career in environmental consulting. Scott Borek has been a coach in the US university landscape since 1983.Borek started his coaching career as an Assistant Coach for Dartmouth College and has has never stopped since. After stints at Brown, Lake Superior State, Providence, and University of New Hampshire (among others), Boreks was hired by Merrimack to start the 2018-19 season. It was a job that came with some challenges.Merrimack had the smallest arena. The smallest campus. And it wasn't nationally recognized as a "hockey" school - even though they played in the ultra competitive Big East Division 1 conference.Merrimack never had a nationally competitive team and it was hard to recruit players, but Boreks has changed that in his 5 years at the helm.At the time of this release, the Warriors are the 5th ranked program in the country and have legitimate aspirations of winning a national championship.Boreks penned the term - "Mission Merrimack" - when he was hired. Find out what that means and how culture has played a significant role in the Warrior's evolution into a real contender. This was a fascinating interview and one you will enjoy!

On the latest episode of the MISportsNow Podcast, our guest is Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference commissioner Kris Dunbar. The former Lake Superior State basketball player, coach and athletic administrator recently sat down with our Cassidy Cobb to discuss her career in athletics.
Amy Metiva did not ride snocross, or even really know about the sport. She is a really good AT and busted it to be the best wherever she was working. Check out some of her story below. Start us with a crazy/awesome story Fargo, North Dakota and it’s negative 39 degrees. The propane tanks froze so the trailer stayed around 42 degrees the whole weekend. Most race weekends we work 15 hour days. We had to backboard in the snow...in the negative 40-degree snow. There were 2 sleds stuck together and a rider underneath the sled. Knowing he needed advanced care quickly we carried him right to the ambulance. Hunter was in an accident in a tight corner. “We are basically waiting for a car accident to happen and then being ready to pounce.” We had a racer get hit by a spindle and had an arterial bleed from the nose and he was not breathing when we got to him. By divine intervention, he came back. He was buried under the snow and we had to dig him out of the snow. Ended up breaking every bone in his face and had 97 stitches in his face. He got to race about 3 weeks later. Hunter, discuss your previous interactions with ATs Hunter grew up playing football and had the high school AT. He did not have much interaction with her. Got hit with a spindle and tried to shake it off. Once he could not move his arm he needed to go see medical. Amy always seems to know when you are going to be hurting and ready to take action. Racers are tougher than nails, so how have you softened them up? Do not go up to the racers when they are focused and in the zone. I communicate beforehand and set up some signals to know they are all good. Build trust before they are injured They come to know if I can get them back into the race safely I will. If I can help them hit their goal and dream...that is the most amazing thing Discuss your journey to becoming an AT. Middle School athlete and was told she had swelling and could not play anymore. She went to an Athletic Trainer and he helped her rehab. In 7th grade she went to a camp and found a book by Arnheim and started reading it on her own. By high school, she was the self-proclaimed medical person. Went through the internship program at Lake Superior State and was assigned tennis. Her parents told her to be the best tennis AT there was even though she did not like tennis. She then moved onto wrestling and loved being the only female AT. That led her to volunteer in lots of places. She stopped the Harlem Globetrotters bus to speak with the AT. This conversation changed Amy’s direction for her career. A year later he called her and brought her to the court to meet the first female Harlem Globetrotter. I have had a lot of jobs between now and then including a ten-year sabbatical to raise my two boys. How did you get into snocross? Someone randomly sent her an offer to help with snocross and she went for it...with no previous knowledge of the sport. “After the first race I was hooked.” Then I got the “call” to the major leagues. She was grilled for 13 hours about how she would handle the job. "God has a plan for me and he wanted me in that place at that time to care for those Snocross athletes."- Amy Metiva Talk about the FXR Snocross medical trailer It is an ER It is a mobile medical clinic We do a lot of taping since they can not fit a brace on with the clothes Sutures, ultrasound, xrays but no medications Everything in the trailer is free for everyone with a “hard card” Family members and crew members as well Expect the unexpected and be ready for anything Obviously, it’s cold, what are your go-to “stay warm” items Klim is a sponsor and provides great gear. Hunter tries to wear almost the same thing each race day whether it is negative temps or just below freezing. Amy does not change her routine either Lots of FXR on the outside
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, we welcome Paul Jerrard, an assistant coach with the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks, to the podcast. One of the few minority coaches to ever stand behind an NHL bench, Jerrard is hoping to help change that moving forward. Through the programs like the NHLCA’s BIPOC coaching program, Jerrard has taken a leadership role in trying to create more opportunity for people for colour in hockey. With people like him leading the charge, we should expect more coaches of colour to be represented in the NHL in the not too distant future. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native has a total of 24 years of coaching experience, which includes five seasons as an assistant in the NHL. The most recent stint saw him spend two seasons on Glen Gulutzan’s staff with the Calgary Flames between 2016 and 2018. Prior to that, Jerrard spent two seasons with the Dallas Stars and one with the Colorado Avalanche. Jerrard got his coaching career started with his alma mater at Lake Superior State following a 10-year professional playing career. He has spent 12 years of his career in the AHL, along with seven seasons in the NCAA. Now in his third season with Nebraska Omaha and Mike Gabinet’s staff, the NCAA D1 11th-ranked Mavericks are in the process of preparing to make a postseason run. Find out his philosophy for running a successful penalty kill from his time in the NHL, how hard work and meaningful connections have helped him in his career, and his thoughts on what steps need to be taken to get more diversity in the NHL.

Deuce Wynes grew up in the "state of hockey", Minnesota. Like so many other Minnesota kids, that meant that Deuce began playing hockey at an early age. High school games were attended by thousands of spectators. Deuce didn't end his hockey career there, however, and instead took his talents to Division 1 schools including Illinois-Chicago and Lake Superior State, which was just coming off a national championship season. Post college, Deuce got an invite to tryout for the pro hockey team in El Paso Texas- not exactly the same hockey hotbed that Minnesota is, but with passionate fans nonetheless. After a couple of years in Texas, Deuce moved on and took a job opportunity in Crested Butte. Deuce continues to be active in the local hockey scene, however- coaching youth hockey, playing in local leagues (contributing plenty of advice in the process), and passing on his love of the game to his family as well. Deuce is also a talented Crested Butte general contractor with his company Blueline Builders. I hope you enjoy this episode of the Crested Butte is Home podcast.
