BREAK: CUofGA STORY 1: Former Police Officer Indicted in Fatal Shooting of Marietta Man Former Woodstock police officer Grant Matthew Shaw has been indicted by a Cobb County grand jury for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Emmanuel Malik Millard during a police chase late last year. Shaw, 23, is accused of causing Millard's death "without any intention to do so." While the grand jury declined to indict Shaw for felony murder and aggravated assault, Shaw was taken into custody and is held without bond. The shooting occurred after a police chase led by Millard from Woodstock into Cobb County. Shaw, who resigned from the Woodstock Police Department in October, was placed on administrative leave pending the investigation's results. STORY 2: Cobb Chairwoman Calls Out Republican Resistance to Ramadan Resolution Chairwoman Lisa Cupid criticized Commissioners Keli Gambrill and JoAnn Birrell for their opposition to a Ramadan proclamation while supporting an antisemitism resolution. Cupid highlighted this as a double standard, advocating for equal recognition and fairness across communities. Despite the controversy, she affirmed her support for the "End Jewish Hate Day" but called for consistent and fair acknowledgment of all religious and cultural celebrations. STORY 3: Palmer Middle School Continues Earning Recognitions for Helping Students Succeed Palmer Middle School has gained recognition for its exceptional achievements, being named a National AVID Demonstration School and attracting attention from educational organizations like Learn4Life and the Georgia Education Policy Fellowship Program. Learn4Life representatives visited Palmer to understand its successful strategies, particularly in supporting Black and Hispanic students who outperform regional peers. The Georgia Education Policy Fellowship Program also visited to learn about the school's culture and academic success. Palmer's strategies include Schoolwide AVID Strategies, PBIS, counseling programs, and intervention strategies. The school emphasizes inclusivity, celebrates student and staff accomplishments, and fosters a supportive environment. Additionally, Palmer has been recognized for its health initiatives and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports program. The dedication of Palmer's educators, including Cobb County Social Worker of the Year Ginnie Barnes and Georgia Middle School Art Teacher of the Year Nicole Gaut, contributes to its success. Organized by the Cobb Domestic Violence Task Force, the walk aims to educate the community and support victims. In 2023, the event raised over $5,000 for the Cobb Family Advocacy Center. Law enforcement officials stressed the importance of advocacy in combating domestic violence, highlighting its prevalence and the challenges victims face in reporting abuse. Participants experienced discomfort wearing heels, symbolizing the challenges faced by victims. Despite the discomfort, participants acknowledged the importance of empathy and understanding in addressing domestic violence issues. The overflow, caused by root intrusion, discharged into a tributary of Due West Creek. Water System staff responded promptly, halting the overflow by April 22 at 1:35 a.m. Upon arrival, they observed sewage spilling from a secured manhole into two storm drains leading to the tributary and a nearby retention pond. Jordan and Alex revisit the beloved 1986 masterwork that blended South African sounds with American dance pop — and became one of the most controversial albums of the decade. Paul Simon's unsanctioned trip to Johannesburg in the era of Apartheid violated a UN boycott, kicking off an international firestorm that nearly cost Simon his life. (Until E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt intervened...) They'll discuss the complex cultural questions surrounding the creation of this album, and also delve into history of these fascinating rhythms and melodies in South Africa. Plus, you'll learn how the album never would have come together without SNL producer Lorne Michaels, discover the dinner party faux-pas that inspired "You Can Call Me Al,' and hear why "Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes" was a last minute addition to the tracklist.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Barry and Abigail discuss Little Creatures by Talking Heads and sample Splash Pad, Sour Slurps Disco Future, Snake Jazz, and Ninja Juice from Invasive Species Brewing in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Abigail recalled seeing David Byrne at the Hollywood Bowl as part of KCRW's World Music Festival. Read this review of show's premiere on June 26, 2005, featuring David Byrne, Arcade Fire, Si*Sé, and the Extra Action Marching Band. Abigail feels that this album “lives in the same space” in her head as Business as Usual by Men at Work, which we previously reviewed in #10: Drinking as Usual. Barry thought that Television Man told a story similar to Being There starring Peter Sellers, based on a Jerzy Kosiński novel. Abigail thought the gospel choir used to open Road to Nowhere was similar to the a cappella opening of Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes by Paul Simon. The “Anosmia” jingle was performed by our friend Pete Coe! You can follow this happy noisemaker on Twitter at @petecoevo. Sarah and Amanda chat with Adalgisa “Lisa” Rivera, an Afro-Latina runner from NYC who just tackled the TransRockies Run. As part of our Run in Her Shoes series, Lisa details this “transformative” experience, including: -being one of ~20 BIPOC participants in the “white space”; -the therapeutic work she did pre-race to face her fears and trepidation; -the steep learning curve of switching from concrete to trail; and, -the crucial importance of establishing “whys” before a big race. Kicking off a Colorado theme, co-host Amanda shares a few adventures in the Rocky Mountain State after just moving there from Maryland. The conversation with Lisa commences at 14:23. Henderson County Sheriff Botie Hillhouse recorded this podcast Wednesday, May 26, at the Henderson County Justice Center. == In this week's podcast, Sheriff Hillhouse talks about the budget process, a big weekend in Athens, and patrolling the lakes during the summer. I. Stats (:18) There are currently 424 inmates in Henderson County Jail, including 133 contract inmates. II. Budget Time (:58) Henderson County Gov has begun the budget process for 2022. The deadline for departments to submit their proposed budgets to the County Judge is this Friday. "I've been in budget mode for a while now, but especially the last couple of days" Sheriff Hillhouse said. "We're looking at all the line items and seeing what expenses we think we are going to have in the year of 2022." The Sheriff's Office has a budget of more than $13 million, divided between law enforcement and the jail. III. Walk-a-Mile and Fiddlers (9:50) This is a big weekend in Athens with the East Texas Crisis Center Walk-a-Mile in Her Shoes event Saturday morning, and the Old Fiddlers Reunion. Both events are on the square in Athens. The Sheriff's Office is always a big participant in the Walk-a-Mile with a team walking and Sheriff Hillhouse being the one to officially start the walk. "It's a great event, it is a fun event," Sheriff Hillhouse said. "It is guys coming out to walk a mile in red high heels. It is a fundraiser for the East Texas Crisis Center." You can learn more about this event on the East Texas Crisis Center Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/etccathens IV. Patrolling the Lakes (16:00) Fiddlers weekend is the traditional start of summer and that means a lot of work for the Sheriff's Office. "The summer months are extremely busy for us here at the Sheriff's Office," said Sheriff Hillhouse. The Sheriff discussed how deputies patrol Lake Palestine and Cedar Creek Lake during the summer months and particularly during the holidays. "We just want everybody to No. 1 take care of each other," Sheriff Hillhouse said. "Be safe, do the right thing. Have a lot of fun, but you have to be safe and do the right thing."

I've developed NERDSoul over the years as a StreetGEEK, unknowingly by loving Wu-Tang, Justice League, Star Wars, Stevie Wonder and playing D&D after school. NERDSoul comes from that StreetGEEK that can chop it up with the best, while being up on game around the block and Pop Culture. We pre-recorded today's conversation for United Way Day with Elise from United Way of Northern Shenandoah Valley & her guest, Cindy Marzullo. Cindy is the Development Director for The Laurel Center. The Laurel Center, formerly The Shelter for Abused Women, empowers and supports victims of domestic violence by providing emergency housing, advocacy, support services, and education. They reach out to our community through education and awareness programs. Services for victims of sexual assault were added to the program in 1989. Today, over 200 women and children stay in the shelter each year and often as many as 3,000 people receive help and support. April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and The Laurel Center is hosting several events to educate the community as well as raise funds for their ongoing programs. Cindy told us about two of those events: Walk a Mile in Her Shoes happening on Saturday, April 24 on the Old Town Walking Mall in Downtown Winchester; and the Fourth Annual Sexual Assault Awareness Candlelight Vigil is on Friday, April 30th from 7:30 to 9:00 PM at the Gazebo in Front Royal. For more information about either of these events or to learn more about the services and programs offered by The Laurel Center, visit their website: https://thelaurelcenter.org/ and follow them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TheLaurelCenter Elise reminded us the Rubbermaid Sale is happening this Saturday, April 24 from 8am - 12pm in the Belk parking lot at Apple Blossom Mall. She also told us about a current fundraiser "Bring the Basics" collection drive that will provide cleaning products, personal hygiene items, and linens to individuals in the Shenandoah Valley who struggle to afford them. The drive kicks off on Monday, April 26 and will run through May 26 with several collection drop-off locations. A recent trend, which gained traction with a piece released by Planned Parenthood a handful of years ago Moving Beyond ProLife vs. ProChoice Labels, Youre Not in Her Shoes, is attempting to do just that. There is a growing desire that the terms prochoice and prolife be abolished because they do not adequately express feelings about abortion. Most people just dont want to be labeled, proponents claim. They may very well be on to something, but theyre taking things too far. Simply put, labels come with pros and cons. Some labels are associated automatically with stereotypical meanings, which can be exacerbated further by any number of factors that influence individuals culture, education, loyalties, circumstances, media. When labels are thrown out haphazardly, they oftentimes unfairly corral others into groups according to the audiences perception. It may be that the call for abolishing the label prochoice comes from the fact that many identify themselves as personally prolife, while others label them prochoice. These individuals play the moral relativism card by reducing moral truth to mere personal preference. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Megan Almon about her 2018 Volume 41, No. 3 Viewpoint article, Whats in a Name? A Growing Trend to Abolish the Labels Prochoice and Prolife. To read her opinion piece, please subscribe to the CHRISTIAN RESEARCH JOURNAL
