Husband and wife team Nathan Wallace and Kelsey Wolf-Wallace share the microphone on this episode of the Lessons Learned for Vets podcast. After serving 5 years in the US Army as a junior enlisted soldier, Nathan decided to separate in 2019. Not prepared for his separation, he shares his struggles and the resources that helped him get back on track. While Kelsey was supporting Nathan through his service, she was pursuing her own education in counseling. Around the same time as Nathan's separation, Kelsey Wolf-Wallace was searching for opportunities to serve the military community. Leveraging her connections on LinkedIn, she landed an interview with Hire Heroes USA and was offered a position as a transition specialist and career coach. Today, they share their two different sides of the transition story. When Nathan decided to separate from the military, he assumed his 5-year military service would be enough to land a job. The two-week TAP classes flew by and felt more like an exercise in checking all the boxes. He drafted a resume, requested his medical documents and even created a LinkedIn profile. However, very little explanation was given to him on how to create an effective resume, network or prepare for an interview. After receiving his DD214, he found himself with 0 income and 0 benefits. Kelsey encouraged Nathan to register and take advantage of the free resources through the 100% completely virtual Hire Heroes USA organization. Hire Heroes USA is a non-profit with a mission to empower transitioning service members, spouses and vets in the job search until meaningful employment is secured in the civilian workforce. Clients receive a draft resume as well as coaching on networking, interviewing and leveraging LinkedIn.The Junior Enlisted Program was recently created to address current data on the junior enlisted servicemember who is separating. The program offers specialized services and addresses specific needs for this population. Junior enlisted servicemembers

Erik might have been dealt a rough hand, but with the help of his Heavenly Father and a humble heart, Erik is taking each day as it comes and making it count. Let's find out how Erik was able to break these chains and became what he is right now. They also talked about: 02:34 How can he relate his freedom from his experience 05:56 How did the bankruptcy woke him up 10:04 Anything he can share to help the people who are struggling 16:15 Was he able to get in contact with his mom 19:38 In what way we can say home is the family's sacred place 22:33 Knowing more about his podcast 24:43 What are the mindsets that keep him going 28:47 What does freedom mean for him Erik also taught us that to be able to break from these negative chains, we need to be grateful and if ever you have a bad day, just acknowledge it. You just had a bad day, not a bad life. Quotes: “I woke up early and felt God at that moment, say, Dude, you're going down this path that's going to end your life very quickly if you don't make some changes in your life. And so I felt in that moment, it was time to make a change. And I quit cold turkey drugs drinking cigarettes at that moment, and I gave my life to Christ.” “ If you're struggling with stuff, you have to one decision that you want to change, then take action and get into a new environment and surround yourself with the people that are living the life that you want to live.” “If you want to make a change is you have to just be grateful like you can journal it, you can write it down.” “I think that if you are in a relationship, and there's someone that's physically abusing you, or emotionally abusing you, but especially on the physical side of it, like I think that's an open door to walk away.” “I do love just being part of, you know, entrepreneurs and speaking life into people and, like you said, just been blessed to speak to so many amazing people like yourself as well. And so that's what I do. I love to just talk life into people.” “Gratitude is huge. Yeah. And I think serving others, like whatever you can do to help others is big because just by giving away your time, or giving away money, or helping somebody do something that maybe they didn't know, but you do, like, you know, just encouraging someone on a daily basis being acknowledged, acknowledging that you're actually living, you got to live another day, if you wake up, right.” “Acknowledging that it's just a bad moment, right? It's not a bad day.” “I think freedom is not financially right. It's a mental thing. Right? If you can live life on your own terms. I think that that's the freedom to me.” Erik Allen Check out Erik Allen social media accounts Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ErikAllenMedia Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/erikgallen/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/ErikGAllen LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/erikgallen/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/TopRatedMMA Website - https://www.erikallenmedia.com/ Do you want to be a speaker/guest on my podcast? Michele Wiesner of Hire Heroes USA shares how her organization was given an “edge” when it comes to engaging volunteers during a pandemic and how they have been growing capacity through remote volunteering since 2005. Hire Heroes USA provides employment assistance services to thousands of transitioning military members each year. Through personalized service and support, they help veterans and military spouses get hired, and they help companies hire and retain them. As the director of capacity building, Michele leads a team of six full-time volunteer program managers who are responsible for engaging and supporting volunteers in their regions. As opposed to many volunteer-driven organizations who've had to pivot to online volunteerism, Hire Heroes has always operated this way. Some staff, however, have had to make the transition from working in an office to working from home. Rather than making big changes during COVID, they had to make more subtle adjustments to their mature digital volunteer strategy. And, staff have had to catch up with volunteers. In this episode, Michele shares how her team has made pivots and how they managed their exponential growth (triple the number of volunteer applications during COVID!) by focusing on building relationships, offering meaningful roles to supporters, and remaining flexible in their approach. For more information, visit https://www.hireheroesusa.org/ and all social channels @hireheroesusa. To explore volunteer opportunities with Hire Heroes, visit https://www.hireheroesusa.org/volunteer/. Dan Goldenberg of the Call of Duty Endowment returned to the show to talk about COD Endowment. Did you know that the endowment is partnered with organizations like Hire Heroes USA to help veterans find HIGH-quality jobs? AMVETS? And a bunch more. They aren't all talk, with over $53 million given so far to help veterans find employment. Get this….100% of donations go to veteran employment. Yes, I am nearing 50. Yes, I've been a gamer for 20+ years. Yes, I am rapidly approaching Prestige 4. Yes, I am bragging lol. Gaming is ageless in my opinion. I just like to escape behind a screen for a bit and talk smack with friends. I remember post-OIF that I would game for hours with a VERY diverse crew; from farmers, truck drivers, vets, cops, and even some factory workers from Saskatchewan Canada. Some of the best chats were in a COD game. More to follow on this in-depth interview with Dan when the episode drops this Monday morning on ALL major podcast platforms, Amazon Fire TV, YouTube, Facebook Podcast, and Vimeo. What seems to be on much of the world's mind - ok, aside from the ongoing pandemic - are the world games going on. I think everyone is appreciating the positive distraction right now. We've been going down to my dad's house to watch the competitions. I love hearing the stories of those who have overcome, persevered, and fought for something. One thing the summer games teaches us is that our past doesn't define us, but can act as a source of strength to us.I recently was listening to a podcast, “The Erik Allen Show,” and I gotta tell ya, Eric's story was just as inspiring as any of those summer games stories. It gave me chills listening to the depth of his past such as choices that resulted in jail time, addictions that took him down a spiraling path, and yet the redemption of breaking free from the chains of his past. Erik's is an encouraging, inspiring, and equipping story of hope that you will not want to miss. This episode sponsored by Rescue Mission of Salt LakeFor more information contact:Rescue Mission of Salt Lake463 South 400 WestSalt Lake City, UT 84101www.rescuesaltlake.orgConnect wtih Erik at www.ErikAllenMedia.com or on Instagram @Erikgallen.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/hollyshighlights)

What are your thoughts on being a Christian? Our brains have a natural tendency to automatically judge and compare which often prevents us from listening and connecting to another's way of living. When you first read the word “Christian” you instantly internalize your own biases and reflect those on the person that you are describing. The reality is our identities come from many different places and not one thing defines who we are. This is the brilliance of hearing Erik’s story. His tumultuous upbringing plagued by unfortunate circumstances of debt, rejection, and hopelessness all changed when we open his heart to Jesus. On his journey his relationship with God, this soon became the foundation for his approach to life and relationships. For him being a Christian allowed him to maintain positivity in the face of negative circumstances, and approach life with love. Sharing his story and message of embracing and loving people where they are at, suggests that we might have more in common with someone who at first sight we might judge. “Love people wherever they are at” -Erik Allen Erik is truly a man of integrity, work ethic and an over-comer. Certs are a lot faster than getting a four-year degree, and they give you more confidence and more options in your career development. For most of the certs you must have coursework credits to sit for the exam. O2O front loads you with the coursework you need to pass the exam, provided through free online training set up by the certifying agency. Each O2O cohort has virtual study groups for support, so students can chat about the challenges of the coursework. You have 180 days, or six months, to complete the course work and pass three practice exams with an 80% or better for O2O to cover the exam fee. Of all the certifications in O2O’s repertoire the most expensive is nearly $1,000. If a milspouse wanted to get the most out of O2O, they could potentially use the first three months to go through coursework get an exam scheduled, and then spend the last three months studying for another cert. Before you finish the coursework someone from Hire Heroes USA will contact you about your resume, cover letter, LinkedIn profile and conduct practice interviews. They also have 900 employment partners across the country. If you are moving, they will contact their corporate partners to see if they have a branch in that location or even better a remote opportunity. Every graduate becomes part of the 14,000-member alumni program where you can network and complete additional training. Graduates are also alumnus of Syracuse University. O2O currently offers 30-plus certs you can get for free, listed on its Learning Pathways website. Knowing which cert to get requires you to do a deep dive to figure out what you want for yourself, your next job and your career. You should take a free self-assessment online or consider talking to a career coach. O2O never lets anyone go down a wrong pathway. If your background does not have all the qualifications, you need for the cert you selected you will get a counseling or coaching session call about other options that are more in line with your qualifications. Programs like O2O enable milspouses to get the careers they want. They aren’t stuck working at the BX or commissary if they don’t want to. Certs shows employers you are committed to a career path and you are committed to getting the necessary training. Milspouses sacrifice a lot through PCSing and taking care o...

This is the second half of my interview with Doug Hawthorne. We discuss his second deployment to Iraq, his time in eastern Afghanistan, and we talk a lot of shop about IEDs. Doug makes the great point that you can't understand Iraq or Afghanistan without knowing about IEDs. Also, Doug's veteran's organization for this episode is Hire Heroes USA. We've talked about them before, but if you're strugglign to find a job, or getting ready to transition out of the military, reach out to Hire Heroes. They've helped over 43,000 vets find jobs, and they can help you too.
For this episode I talked to Alani about her time in the elite Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Much of her work is confidential, but she does a great job explaining how military law enforcement and counter-intelligence works. She also came prepared with a pair of great organizations that help people successfully transition out of the military and into civilian jobs. American Corporate Partners and Hire Heroes USA are both doing great work. Check out our conversation to learn more.
https://www.swordandthescript.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/bab_019_Jaime_Chapman.jpg When Jaime Chapman married into the Army, she experienced firsthand how difficult it is to find a job or maintain a career. While she did find work as a DoD contractor running programs for veterans in transition, the contract nature of the work meant her employment was subject to budget constraints. Despite three promotions, when she was laid off for the second time, she decided to become an entrepreneur out of necessity and started a staffing agency. She started out writing resumes for transitioning Soldiers, but then with her personal and professional experience, realized a better niche was helping military spouses. Today, she’s helped thousands of military spouses find jobs and careers and she shares what she’s learned in this episode. “Funny story: I was going through your open positions to pitch you on our staffing services. Instead, I think you have a position that was written just for me.” Those were the opening lines Kenny Brady sent our VP of Customer Success. Now, Kenny is one of our Terminators, crushing it as a Customer Service Manager. It's easy to love this guy: He's a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and he was working for Hire Heroes USA, when he found us at Terminus. Before coming on board, Kenny worked in sales with a variety of SaaS companies who all had similar approaches: “Take this list of random contacts. Call everyone. Bring in some results.” Kenny knew there had to be a better way. In fact, without knowing it, he created his own makeshift ABM from his experiences along the way, even before he knew what ABM was. You gotta hear his story.
