After a long and successful career in the corporate world, including being a General Manager at United Technologies, Robb Hiller decided to start his own company to follow one of his passions, evaluating talent and solving problems executives face in their organizations. He was an active member of his community, focused on giving and helping others. Then, unexpectedly he was hit with a terrible diagnosis - his doctor informed Robb he had not one, not two, but three cancers developing in his body. He couldn't understand why this was happening to him; it seemed so unfair. But, it wouldn't take him long to discover that asking why wouldn't take him anywhere; he had to ask a different question, and that discovery took him on a beautiful journey of compassion, optimism, and healing. Robb Hiller is the CEO and Founder of Performance SolutionsMN, Inc and the author of The Power of Three, a book where he breaks down his learning experiences navigating and overcoming one of the toughest challenges of his life. In this episode, we had an inspiring conversation about Robb's fascinating life story, his discoveries along the way, and how optimism and gratitude helped him survive. In addition, Robb kindly shared some brilliant insights about friendship, positive affirmations, and how powerful it can be to put gratitude out in the world without expecting anything in return. If you look in a textbook of medical physiology, hydration is water and electrolytes in specific ratios. If you just add water you end up in a hyponatremic state; a low sodium state and this explains things like hand swelling. Most people are familiar with experiencing their hands swelling up when they go hiking and they drink lots of water, they're sweating like crazy, and they're swelling up because virtually nobody supplements with sodium... ...When our sodium levels are low, we will tend to get edema and this is when our hands, feet, and brain will also swell. This is what kills people when they over hydrate with only water like in hazing events or while training for and running in marathons. The next time you go hiking, drink pickle juice or LMNT, and notice how you don't swell." - Robb Wolf Why Sodium Is So Important When You Sweat "When we sweat, we mainly excrete sodium. We don't really excrete potassium or magnesium; there's a little bit but it's orders of magnitude different. So, in that high sweat scenario: a sauna, exercise, ruck marching; stuff like that - you need to mainly focus on sodium. Over the course of a month yes we need sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphates, bicarbonates - all of the electrolytes but in that time course of a hard, physical event or sauna, the main problem is the rapid and significant loss of sodium. So, that is another reason why you really have to target that." - Robb Wolf Achieving Stable Sodium Levels Pre, Peri, and Post Workout "Adequate post training or post stress sodium dramatically enhances recovery and there are a ton of mechanisms for why but one of the things that adequate sodium levels effect is cortisol release because it's less of a stress. If the body is getting adequate sodium, it's signalling the body that it's okay and it has enough nutrient resources to be able to recover. So pre workout sodium intake is really important depending on the duration of the event and then on the recovery side we also need adequate sodium and electrolytes.... ...During the workout, sipping a drink like LMNT that will keep you well hydrated. When I was trying to do training like this ten plus years ago I would just be absolutely crushed after a workout and I think it was because I wasn't properly addressing my electrolyte levels like I am today. This pre, peri, and then post supplementation is really important to be on point if you want to optimize the whole workout experience." - Robb Wolf Links From Today's Show Drink LMNT – Zero Sugar Hydration: Get your free LMNT Sample Pack, you only cover the cost of shipping Click here to get your FREE e-book, The Fundamental Guide To Fasting by Robb Wolf 357 Robb Wolf 103 Robb Wolf The Case For Better Meat | Robb Wolf What Is Wellness? F-Stop Collaborate and Listen - A Landscape Photography Podcast
Welcome to episode 193 of the F-Stop Collaborate and Listen podcast. This week on the podcast, I was happy to be joined by Robb Hirsch, a landscape photographer from California. Robb is a biologist by training, naturalist by heart, and photographer by passion. Robb has an intimate relationship with the natural world. This connection was established early during annual childhood visits to Yosemite, which forged his bond with this magical place. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of California–Irvine, Robb began a career as a field biologist, working on a variety of projects for California State Parks, the US Geological Survey, and several private firms. His love for traveling and exploration has taken him through Africa, Central America, Tasmania and the western United States. Initially photography was a means to document his work and travels, but it soon became the focus. Robb’s photography has been featured in international competitions, calendars, magazines, and gallery showings, and he leads customized, small group and private photography workshops in Yosemite and surrounding Sierra Nevada. Robb and I discuss some interesting topics this week, including: How Robb got into landscape photography as a biologist. Robb's incredible book, "The Nature of Yosemite - A Visual Journey", Robb's love affair with Yosemite National Park and the Yosemite Conservancy, How curiosity of the natural world and geological processes informs and guides his photography, His method of composition in landscape photography, Using photography to inspire others to experience their own connections to a place, The importance of understanding the history of the places we photograph, And much, much more. Over on Patreon this week, Robb and I discuss the importance of developing personal relationships with other people as landscape photographers. Here are the photographers that Kristen recommended on the podcast: 1. Jerry Dodrill. 2. Ian Shive. 3. Ed Callert. 4. James McGrew. Other items mentioned on the show this week: 1. Gary Randall and Chris Byrne Columbia River Gorge workshop. 2. Nature First Photography. I love hearing from the podcast listeners! Reach out to me via Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter if you'd like to be on the podcast or if you have an idea of a topic we can talk about. Join the discussion over on Nature Photographer's Network! Robb Wells, President and CEO of the Greater Beaufort-Port Royal CVB, has been a Destination Marketing Professional for more than 15 years. Starting his career as Executive Director for Duplin County Tourism in North Carolina before moving to become Sr. Director of Marketing at the Knoxville Tourism & Sports Corporation and then became Vice President of the Tourism Division for the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce before taking on his current role as President and CEO of the CVB. Robb is successful at establishing the vision and strategies necessary to ensure a destination’s continued success. He excels at creating relationships, networks, and business connections while partnering with all core tourism constituents to significantly increase the area’s visitor experience and overall economic impact. In this episode of Destination on the Left, we are joined by Robb Wells, the President and CEO of the Greater Beaufort-Port Royal Conventions and Visitors Bureau in South Carolina. During this conversation, Robb discusses his journey in the travel and tourism industry, and he shares invaluable lessons about responding to adversity and uncertainty. Learn how Robb’s organization is using creativity and collaboration to cut through the noise and make a positive impact on the Beaufort community. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Robb’s journey into the travel and tourism industry Robb’s role as the President and CEO of Greater Beaufort-Port Royal CVB How Robb’s experience with collaboration and interdepartmental connectivity has changed since he first started Why partnerships shape the perception of DMOs in their communities How Robb has used creativity to make Beaufort stand out from the crowd How Beaufort builds powerful public relations campaigns to cut through the noise How Robb uses creativity to overcome the adversity and uncertainty of hurricane season Future projects for the light at the end of the tunnel How Robb is working with other departments and organizations to create something bigger than themselves Advice for how to approach a successful collaboration Greater Beaufort-Port Royal CVB Robb Wells is the President & CEO at Greater Beaufort-Port Royal CVB in South Carolina. Robb started his journey in travel and tourism with a DMO in a small rural community that was still under economic development. The lessons and experience Robb picked up in that role set the stage for his career and prepared him to lead the operation with the Greater Beaufort-Port Royal CVB. In this episode of Destination on the Left, Robb shares invaluable insights about responding to adversity. Robb’s community has to prepare itself for hurricane season every year and the lessons he has learned from dealing with that uncertainty are widely applicable to other scenarios as well. Never Stop Learning Robb’s first day on the job was a governor’s conference. As a twenty-four-year-old who got thrown into the deep end, Robb had to learn on the fly and work outside of his comfort zone constantly. It is something most of us do now and then, but to this day, Robb is educating himself regularly to serve his community the best he can. Whether you find tourism or tourism finds you, it is important to stay ahead of the changing landscape by leveraging all of the resources you can find. Travel and tourism is a highly competitive space that requires creativity and collaboration to thrive in, and it is woven into the fabric of our communities’ economies. More Than Tourism When Robb first got into the travel and tourism industry, everything in his community’s tourism strategy was siloed. Robb put a lot of energy into facilitating interdepartmental connectivity and collaboration. He maintains that emphasis to this day because it shapes the way communities view DMOs. People might not understand the tourism industry, but they understand the role of a DMO in their community because of the prevalence of partnerships. Robb is working with his partners on things like content creation and festival production, contributing to an even greater presence of the CVB in Beaufort. Whether it is aggressive public relations campaigns or new attractions, Robb’s organization is focused on a much bigger picture than tourism alone. They are making an impact on the Beaufort community with everything they do. Are your food choices really determined by you? In a way, yes. You are the one that has full responsibility of driving that body of yours around. But in another way, no. If you look a little closer, you’ll see that the roads you have been driving on were set up in a way that makes your decisions less conscious… robotic even. Your vehicle (that amazing body of yours) has been wired to eat in a certain way. And you’re probably not the one who did the initial wiring. If this brings to mind the scene in The Matrix where Neo wakes up all covered in goo, and hooked to wires that have been draining his life-force, then good. That was such an awesome scene. I’m not talking about that kind of wiring though. I’m talking about the internal wiring. How your brain and nervous system are wired up to automate behaviors. Believe it or not, you don’t come here with a lot of advanced programming set up. Sure, you have all the basics: eating, crying, laughing, pooping (oh, how many diapers I’ve changed!). You don’t have to work very hard to do those things. But, and this is a big but, what you are fed, what you cry about, what you laugh about, and what you are pooping out can be very different depending on how you’re programmed. And that’s where your wake up call is going to begin. Recently we are realizing far more that it’s not so much that diseases are inherited. Sure, we can carry genes for an array of chronic illnesses from our parents. However, research is finding that over 80% percent of those genes are largely under our control (specifically under the control of our lifestyle choices). So, again, it’s not so much that diseases are inherited, but our family’s cookbooks and eating habits are inherited. And that’s how we initially get wired to eat. Today New York Times bestselling author (and modern day superhero) Robb Wolf is on the show to talk about some of this internal wiring. Most importantly, he’s got the tools, insights, and strategies to reprogram yourself to make the food decisions that really serve you. Plus, he’s going to show you how the variety and enjoyment from food in your life can be personalized. This is vital stuff, so click play, climb out of the mental goo, and enjoy! In this episode you'll discover: Which unique foods are proven to enhance stem cell genesis. What enabled Robb to go from chronic illness (and potential removal of part of his intestines) to remarkable health and fitness in just a matter of months. How Robb opened up the very first Crossfit Affiliate gym in the country. Why your environment matters just as much as your diet. The chronic family health issue that inspired Robb to test out a Paleo-type diet. What neuroregulation of appetite is. Why some people are better off eating a cookie than a banana (wait, what?). How professional eating competitors hack their appetite. What vanishing calories and hyperpalatable foods are. Why gut bacteria needs to be considered with our food choices. What personalized nutrition is and why it’s important. How to intelligently alter meals so that everyone in the family eats what’s best for them. Surprising insights about kid’s eating habits for parents who want their kids to eat healthy. The vast benefits and potential pitfalls with a ketogenic diet. How community and relationships play a powerful role in health and wellness. Items mentioned in this episode include: Onnit.com/Model

In this new book you will learn about neuroregulation of appetite and how hyperpalatable foods can bypass our built in “off switch”, causing us to eat far more than we otherwise would. The genes that made our ancestors successful are setting us up for troubles today. You will learn how sleep, gut health, stress, exercise and community can work with or against our goals of health and leanness. With Wired To Eat you’ll embark on a program to rewire your appetite and regain your health. We will start with a 30 Day Reset that will normalize the neuroregulation of appetite and help us not only to eat the right amount, but also begin to appreciate simple but delicious meals. After the 30 Day Reset we will use the 7 Day Carb Test to map what specific carbohydrate foods we do best (and worst) with. This will move us beyond one-size-fits-all dietary dogma and into the modern world of Personalized Nutrition. Wired To Eat includes over 60 whole-food recipes and includes meal plans for the 30 Day Reset as well as for autoimmune and ketogenic diets. How Paleo health got its start with just a couple of thousands of people studying and researching it. The emotion and story behind Robb writing his upcoming book, Wired to Eat. How the human race has evolved in such a way that it's difficult to eat healthy with our current environment: food to order, a variety of flavors, processed foods etc. Why we have a mindset that we can't be healthy even as we're watching other people do just that. It's hard to make changes in our lives because we're afraid to fail or look bad. How Robb struggled with his own health and inherited genetics. Despite his success as an author and podcast host, Robb has always been able to stay level-headed and stay true to himself. What Robb has learned from watching other people in the industry and how he used that point of view as an opportunity to decide how he would present himself to the public. Robb and Josh dive deep into a conversation about the neuroregulation of appetite and personalized nutrition tools. How our modern world has taken away the positive impact of our natural optimum foraging strategy and why we have palate fatigue. What we can do to avoid distractions and really focus on what our appetites are telling us: when we're truly hungry and when we're full. The dessert effect: When we decide to go ahead to eat dessert even though we've just polished off a huge meal. The normal fed state: what it is and how it varies from person to person depending on several factors such as stress, sleep, genetics etc. The idea of calories in and calories out simply doesn't work. We need to balance our activity and nutrition out. If we're very active, we need more nutrients, but if we have a low calorie day, we're naturally less active. If we get into an over-fed state, we're overweight, but our brain cannot sense it because it's become numb to the feeling of over-eating food. How Robb came up with the 30 Day Reset Program in Wired to Eat and why it's only 30 days: It's not a long time, but enough time to collect necessary information to help the person see results as far ar their: Protein Fiber The mission behind the 7 Day Carb Test: it helps people to see the impact that different carbohydrates have on their bodies and minds. Robb's experience with the Ketogenic Diet and what advice he would give to people who follow it or a low-carb diet. The blood-glucose monitors that Robb offers on his website and what it can tell you about yourself in accordance with different parameters such as food and sleep. Precision Xtra Glucose+Ketone meter Dexcom Continuous Glucose monitor Are finger pricks really necessary to tell us about our blood-glucose levels? Robb shares how technology is making it easier for us to learn about our bodies and what we can do to modify our daily habits for better health. How becoming a parent has helped Robb become more patient with both himself and others. What it was like for Robb to write his second book, Wired to Eat and some of the hurdles he had to jump to make sure his voice was heard in the book. Top 3 Takeaways From The Show What have we got to lose from trying a diet like the Paleo diet? If we're doing all that we can to help our health, but nothing is helping, simply changing your focus on nutrition could be the solution. Change can be difficult but with Robb's 30 Day Reset Program and 7 Day Carb Test, we'll be able to see that making small changes to our diet really isn't that difficult after all. Our modern world has stolen the positive impact of the natural optimum foraging strategy that was passed down to us by our ancestors. This is why we experience palate fatigue after we eat the same processed foods over and over again. The Paleo diet brings us back to that optimum foraging strategy so we can avoid palate fatigue. What our bodies and minds need is a variety of healthy, nutritious foods that can help us function better. Our bodies have a gut, health, and brain connection and The 4 Pillars of Health have a great influence over this connection. The 4 Pillars of Health are Sleep, Movement, Community, and Nutrition. Our genetic and environmental factors can either make it easier for us to overeat or if we're able to balance the 4 Pillars, we can manage our nutrition. Power Quotes From Robb Wolf "Eat whole foods, get outside, move a lot, sleep like you are on vacation, and surround yourself with loving relationships." - @robbwolf "If we understand how our world has changed, our genetics are wired for a different world, we can free ourselves of the shame and missed placed morality associated with you and hearing difficulties of change. We can finally stop bleeding ourselves for our inability to lose weight and get healthy." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat "We are genetically wired to eat more and move less; it’s no wonder most people fail to achieve health and weight-loss goals." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat "The fact that the Paleo diet can be difficult for some people to follow indicates that there is a mismatch between our genetics and our current environment. Everything that made our ancestors successful and everything that brought us to where we are today is the reason why changing our diets can be difficult." - Robb Wolf on why it's difficult for people to follow healthy diets like the Paleo diet. "We often tell ourselves stories about why we are a certain way. We tell ourselves why we can or cannot change. And the common denominator with most of the stories is fear. Fear of change, failure, or wasting time. This fear sends the logical mind searching for credible reasons why embarking on a new solution seems like a bad idea." - Robb Wolf in his upcoming book, Wired to Eat about why we let fear get in the way of our goals. "It's not about me, it's about the mission." - Lauren Noel on the importance of staying true to yourself while becoming more recognizable in the health and wellness industry. "I basically adopted a low-carb, Paleo diet and it was almost as if a switch had been flipped. For the first time in my life, I didn't have to eat every hour and a half to two hours or face a catastrophic hypoglycemic event. I was completely functional. I felt good, I was leaner than I had ever been in my life, and it was all effortless." - Robb Wolf on deciding to follow a Paleo diet to improve his health. "Eat whole, unprocessed foods, get outside in the sun, move a lot, sleep like you are on vacation, and surround yourself with loving relationships." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat on how to stay healthy. "With a Paleo template, you can still add spaghetti if you want to add it. You can have spaghetti squash and it might be a bit odd for some people at first, but when you add the marinara sauce, it still tastes delicious. It's the same as normal spaghetti because you don't even taste the noodles. What you taste is the marinara sauce on top." - Robb Wolf on how you can eat Paleo foods and still enjoy the meal. "Be able to do whatever I want to do with very little preparation or effort within the 4 pillars of health: sleep, nutrition, movement, and community. We need to have a balance of all 4 and if we're successful, we'll be able to do a large amount of what we want to do with our lives." - Rob Wolf on what wellness means to him. "People are not swayed into action by information. Most people make changes in behavior due to emotion, not facts and figures. This is not a bad thing; our emotions, coupled with our logical intellect, is what make us human." - Robb Wolf in Wired to Eat More About Robb Wolf Robb Wolf, a former research biochemist is the New York Times Best Selling author of The Paleo Solution – The Original Human Diet. On the podcast today, I’m trying something I’ve not done yet on the show… This is an encore of one of the most requested episodes we’ve done yet on the show. Episode 126 is an interview with my friend and former student, Robb Bailey, who has built a very successful Facebook ads agency for himself -- an agency that specializes in managing Facebook ads in the fitness niche. And as you’ll hear during my talk with Robb, he works with niche businesses within the fitness niche. Robb’s been in the online marketing world for over a decade and he spent nine of those years running, what he calls, a “jack-of-all-trades” marketing agency. He and his team offered everything from SEO to blog writing to marketing automation — you name it. But as you’ll hear Robb explain on the show, offering tons of services to tons of clients in tons of industries can lead to, well….a ton of stress. This year, he finally decided to niche down and focus on solving a specific problem for businesses in a specific industry. Now, he runs a successful Facebook Ads agency that serves businesses in the health and fitness industries. Whether you manage Facebook ads for clients or not, you’ve got to hear the smart strategies Robb used to optimize the profitability of his ads management business while prioritizing top-notch results for his clients. It’s some seriously good stuff. Still, the biggest reason I can’t wait for you to listen to this episode is because Robb talks a lot about how niching down in business has allowed him to level up his happiness in life. It’s a show with the kind of value that, frankly, speaks for itself. I hope you’ll agree. On Today’s Show You’ll Learn: Robb’s initial client acquisition strategy when he started his Facebook ads agency How Robb charged new clients for his Facebook Ads services Why niching down is a game-changer for business owners today What’s allowed Robb to actually interview potential clients and pick and choose who he wants to work with How Robb is able to offer a money-back guarantee on his services The value you can gain by looking at offers from similar businesses as you’re setting up Facebook ad campaigns Why video can be the difference between a home run Facebook ads campaign and a complete strikeout The importance of a follow-up sales sequence and how to set one up so it works with your Facebook ads strategy And a lot more… 5 Steps to Creating a Profitable Facebook Ads Business Go From Making $165/month Per Client to Over $2,000/month Per Client Like Kerry & Others If you're interested in managing Facebook ads for other businesses, whether this is something you want to start as a side hustle while you’re building your own online business, maybe you want to manage ads full time as your business… ...you may already be really good at Facebook ads and now want to create a business out of it but you’re not sure how to start the business and get clients... “The riches are in the niches...” If you’ve been in the online marketing or entrepreneurship space for any length of time, then you’re probably pretty familiar with this phrase. Or at least some variation of it. By now most of us have heard industry leaders suggest that “niching down” (or focusing on solving a specific problem for a super specific target market) is the key to success. I feel like this idea comes up as a key piece of advice both to brand new entrepreneurs who are just starting out, and to more experienced business owners who are looking to take things to the next level. And that’s one of the reasons I know this week’s podcast episode has the potential to be a real game-changer for people. On Episode #111 of The Art of Paid Traffic, I talk with my friend and former student, Robb Bailey. Robb’s been in the online marketing world for over a decade and he spent nine of those years running, what he calls, a “jack-of-all-trades” marketing agency. This week we have a special interview with animator Robb Pratt ("Superman Classic," "Flash Gordon Classic"). We talked about how and why he started the Classic series, his thoughts on Superman as a character, Flash Gordon and how he relates to Star Wars, various trials and tribulations navigating the business world of animation entertainment, his recent work on "Wabbit" (the Bugs Bunny animated shorts show) and his absolute love of story and art! Robb was very generous with his time and couldn't have been more fun to talk to. In particular, I loved his insights into the character relation between Bugs Bunny and Superman, the analysis of the Rancor pit scene from "Return of the Jedi" and how he got that creepy voice effect in "Bizarro Classic."
