Today I'm talking with one of the most sought-after celebrity trainers on the planet. Jason Walsh has trained stars like Matt Damon, Miles Teller, Brie Larson, and Bradley Cooper for some of the most physically demanding roles of their careers. He's also the founder of Rise Nation, a global fitness studio powered by the VersaClimber, where you train like an athlete. On today's episode, we talk about how Jason rose to success as a celebrity trainer. He shares the moments that defined his life and career, plus his advice for anyone who wants to get started in the fitness industry. We also go deep on the painful parts of entrepreneurship—unpacking the betrayals and heartbreaks we've both experienced as founders. We explore ways to train your brain and your body for resiliency, and how to redefine forgiveness as an energetic shift. We also talk about Jason's new protein company, Rise 311. Plus, his take on why you don't need to train for an hour a day to get results. As leaders, educators, coaches, etc. our ability to adapt to our audience, context and even ourselves is what allows us to be most effective. Truly objective perception isn't just difficult, it's nearly impossible. That means everyday, despite your best efforts, people will interpret your actions, words, and behaviors differently than you intended. It's the same reason why there are Michelin star restaurants certain people love and others hate; Nobel prize winners some revere and others think are a hack. While we can't control people's perceptions, the more we understand them, the more we can influence them… Today's episode is all about acknowledging and appreciating the multitude of factors that affect perception so we can bridge the gap with our communication and work to prevent unnecessary misunderstandings. We cover: The 8+ variables affecting perception & how to identify them The ONLY tool that can help bridge a perceptual gap The Better Than Average Effect + Theory of Mind: why they matter Two ESSENTIAL questions to ask when you've been misunderstood As mentioned in this episode, if you're looking for more reading on perception, check out this previously redacted article: Mokusatsu: One Word, Two Meanings. THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE FOR 30% OFF ALL TOP COURSES! The most dangerous phrase in any organization is “because that's how we've always done it”. It's the utterance of those scared of change, unwilling to think laterally, and clinging desperately to their comfort zone. Any true leader knows that in today's rapidly evolving world, those who last will be those who adapt- plain and simple. As hard as change may be, imagine trying to implement it at the ground level of an organization steeped in tradition and hierarchy like the Army. That's what today's guest Captain Anna Zamora is trying to do; Not only has she been tasked with implementing a new culture surrounding soldier health and wellness, she has had to prove the viability of the program to those around her and above her. Captain Anna Zamora was a D1 strength coach from 2010-2020 with stops at Duke, Yale, UConn, Penn State, and DePaul. The number one complaint we hear from coaches and leaders is “I don't have enough time”. But is that really the issue? There's plenty of data to support that on average we actually work less and have more “leisure time” than ever before… So what gives? Today's episode is a deep dive into the illusion of not having enough time and the questions we should be asking ourselves to get to the bottom of this: Are we simply filling our idle time with other tasks? Is our to-do list mal-aligned with our values? Are we comparing our time to others? How are we “valuing” our time? Why do we hate unwinding? Who owns our time? We'll tackle these questions and other fallacies then give you a new approach* to figuring out how to make more time for the things that matter. *Hint: it's not to wake up earlier, use a planner, go to bed later, or set a timer.. It's not everyday we get the chance to discuss the nitty gritty behind-the-scenes detail required to provide exceptional service (sans compromising quality) with someone who has built a powerhouse company from the ground up. Today, Matt Reynolds gives us a look under the hood at his online coaching model and his take on the “training” market that can be saturated with mediocrity. You'll want to take some notes as we discuss topics ranging from the benefits of an apprenticeship model to pricing a premium product and not apologizing for it. You're also in for a treat as we get a little fired up about why certifications alone aren't cutting it... Not only is Matt the founder of Barbell Logic which has grown to be one of the largest online coaching companies on the planet, he has a successful podcast, YouTube channel, and hundreds of articles on the value of strength training. He also knows a thing or two about managing people as he leads a team of 80 incredible high-performing, yet compassionate people. With nearly 25 years of experience competing in strength sports and coaching barbell-based strength and conditioning. In his earlier life he competed at a high level in both powerlifting and strongman, and in 2008, he founded one of the strongest and largest strength gyms in the country, STRONG Gym, which Matt sold in 2015, to turn his attention to the broader audience of online coaching. Positive thinking is overdone and often ineffective when applied to the messy realities of life and leadership. I'm not saying there isn't a use for it but rather that we should rethink when and to whom we recommend it. Why? Positive thinking can lull us into a false sense of security, make us overconfident and keep us from taking action when we need to. What if instead of judging thoughts as positive or negative we measured them in terms of how productive they are? What if we embraced feelings of anxiety and nerves because it means we care and/or are pushing our limits? On today's show we will tackle these questions and many more. Also, we were thinking… Why is it that we look for physical asymmetries in athletes and clients, but we don't measure them in our learning or communication? People are the ultimate performance variable so if we aren't assessing gaps here, aren't we missing a huge piece of the puzzle? The Apprenticeship, a two day interactive workshop specializing in how to deal with people, power dynamics, hard conversations and the messy realities of life and leadership is aimed at closing that gap. Have you ever wondered how much time would we save if we acted like humans and said what we meant? These days it can feel like we're being beaten over the head with leadership cliches like “grind in silence,” “be seen not heard” and other preachy rhetoric about servitude... We've been told that good work will speak for itself and that self-promoters aren't in it for the “right reasons”… But how do we reconcile these “leadership laws” with the understanding that in order to adapt and evolve we have to be vulnerable and put ourselves (and our work) out there? In truth- like anything, excessive modesty can be a hindrance. Today's episode is all about what happens when humility goes too far. It’s well known that maintaining muscle mass is one of the most crucial things we can do as we age. It has been shown to be the number one factor in preventing injuries, regulating hormones, and increasing longevity overall. But here’s the thing, it isn’t necessary to go all out at the gym every day. Today’s guest is a leader in this movement of micro-dosing fitness. Jacques Devore is the owner of Sirens & Titans Fitness in Los Angelas. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, Primal Health Coach, and is licensed as an expert USA Cycling Coach. In addition to training many elite athletes and being one of the fittest and strongest men I know of his age, Jacques holds the world record for the mile in the Versaclimber. In today’s talk, Jacques uses his unique insight into the fitness industry to examine how it can better help us maintain health as we age. Instead of killing it at the gym, Jacques describes how he has maintained healthy muscle mass through short but regular workout routines. Even though we all lead busy lives, everyone has a few minutes every day to work on their fitness. Jacques walks us through the ways we can carve out little bits of time here and there in order to meet our fitness goals, build muscle mass, and ultimately improve longevity. What can you do for just ten minutes today to start adding micro-dosing fitness into your daily routine? Tell me in the comments on the episode page! In this episode How micro-dosing fitness at home can be a useful alternative to long sessions at the gym The importance of goal setting in your exercise routines The five principles behind maintaining healthy fitness that everyone can incorporate into their week How endurance athletes can prevent burnout by weightlifting just a few hours a week What a week of small doses of exercise looks like Quotes “I started realizing that what I have done consistently is small doses of exercise, but I do it regularly.” [4:38] “Injury becomes a greater risk as we get older. When you think about people who you know, you see their health deteriorate usually after an injury.” [22:23] “What people don’t realize is the irony of fitness; the more fit you get, the more efficient you get, and the fewer calories you burn in the same hour of training.” [30:07] “You have to believe that you can move the needle with small doses of exercise. If you don’t believe that then you won’t try it.” [52:33] “If you’re your own coach, you have to call yourself on your BS. You have to really recognize that you can do this and you shouldn’t let someone tell you that you can’t.” [57:27] Links Find Jacques Devore online Follow Jacques on Instagram | Facebook Bicycling Maximum Overload for Cyclists The Death of the Perfect Set Check out the full show notes for this episode here Urban Wellness Clinic Follow Emily & Urban Wellness on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube

Sadly, innovation and technology still need to catch up with Disney Imagineers' ideas - hopefully sooner rather than later. If none of that sounds interesting enough to give this podcast a listen - then maybe a little Bob Iger Vs. Abigail Disney in the Twitter ring will! Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger pulled $66,000,000 this past year. Abby doesn't think he deserves it - and while she is probably right, Disney as a company defends Bob's take-home pay by stating that it is "90-percent performance based." Iger's impressive Disney Decade has brought our $24 per-share holdings out of the red and into the $125 range, sure, but when the going got tough, didn't he stop working out? No, he didn't. He still cranks out 4am cardio sessions on the VersaClimber. Haven't been on one? Try it and see if you can walk the next day. Don't forget to leave a comment - good, bad, or ugly - we'll take em all! Photo Credit: LUCASFILM/WALT DISNEY PICTURES

It's the Versaclimber, folks: the most brutally effective piece of fitness equipment you'll ever use (but probably haven't). Most people don't know about it because no one talks about it, few use it, and gyms don't stock more than one if you're lucky. Is this because it's a useless piece of machinery? No. The Versaclimber is almost too good, too effective, too intense an experience for most people. The few that have used it almost invariably quit because it's so hard. And gyms don't have many because they can't convince people to use it, to actually go all out like they've never gone all out before. Dan Charnitski is General Manager and part owner of the family business that his father began in 1976 with the invention of a hand held heart rate monitor. In 1980 his father Richard Charnitski, a mechanical engineer began design on the VersaClimber. About that time while playing football at Cal State Northridge, Dan changed majors from business to physical education with an emphasis in exercise science and in the meantime visited home occasionally to help test and build the first VersaClimber. In 1982 Dan moved back home and helped his father to start to manufacture and sell the VersaClimber. Between taking classes and finishing up his B.S Degree at Cal State Fullerton Dan drove a VW bus to deliver VersaClimber to gyms. Although Dan’s experience was in exercise science he got quick and potent on the job manufacturing and marketing training guided by his father. So, since 1982 Dan has been working up through the ranks at Heart Rate Inc. He has been involved in the development, manufacturing and marketing of several products for the health, fitness, rehab and sports training markets. And now 33 years later, Heart Rate Inc. is going strong manufacturing in the USA and consistently striving to be a positive influence in the exercise field. The SMARTER Team Training Audio Interview Series has been developed to share insights from some of the best in the industry.
