Day 27 April Intentional Healing In each moment learn to ask yourself whether you are in danger or you have a choice to make the best response. Being triggered is to human, but being reactive is on the other side of being responsive. If there is a physical attack coming your way, yes, you are in danger, so run! Or find a way to lock doors or defend yourself where there is no other choice. However, if someone has not texted you, has not answered your call or is not responding to what you are saying, ask yourself if you are in mortal danger? If someone writes or says something you do not like, do you have to be furious and shout at them or hit them. Self-care is the ability to assess a sitiation and recognise whether you are in danger or survival mode. Whether you need to learn to feel safe in your body to minimise unnecessary reactions. People talking about you, you can live. Someone ignoring you is not a matter of life and death. Unless you make it so. 2. What's the Best Exercise Schedule at Midlife?

Two listener questions beg the answer to the best exercise schedule at midlife. So, in this episode, I'll share the answer to both and reflect on the science of frequency and intensity of the variables leading to fitness for women in midlife. To do that I'll define it for you in case you're wondering just what is that? The questions:   00:00 03:48 What is the best exercise schedule for midlife women?   Would working upper body 30 - 45 mins every 96 hours, and lower 30 - 45 mins every 96 hours, be ok since I'm getting at least 72 hours to rest between muscle groups? For example, Monday Upper, Wednesday lower, Friday Upper, Monday Lower, Wednesday upper. 04:24 What's the Best Exercise Schedule at Midlife? Science-Based Women Over 50 Would weight training 2 times and HIIT 2 times per week still apply? (I'm 44)  I'm used to doing a demanding kettlebell workout 3-4 times per week for 15-20 minutes and some sort of daily exercise. I feel fatigued and bloated, especially leading to my cycle, despite a healthy diet making it hard to juggle work, family, and young daughter.  Join the Flipping 50 Insider's Group to ask a question for a podcast or video yourself: https://www.facebook.com/groups/flipping50tv   First, let's define midlife and agree that Nicole at 44 with a 5-year-old, or Nicky or you listening who are in your mid-50s or 60 all qualify as midlife. If you're in that stage of peri which starts in early 40s for most women or post-menopause and still balancing hormones to benefit your muscle, body composition, and bones, you're there.  So, in case you're not Nicole and there's no 5-year-old, stay with me. This will apply to you too. The biggest insight here, is “I feel fatigued and bloated.”  She added, especially before my cycle. 05:52 Exercise that Makes You Tired or Doesn't Help Boost Energy Needs a Change! I'll start with fatigued. The way you feel tells you the results of your collective lifestyle habits. So, let's change them if you're not feeling good. I'd suggest using that and adjusting.  As a coach, whether a woman comes to me already fatigued or becomes fatigued doing a certain protocol, that immediately changes the protocol. So, Nicole, coach yourself. Exercise should make you feel good, strong and enjoy more energy than without it. Since that's not happening for you, make a change.  To comment on the doing a demanding kettlebell workout 3-4 times a week. Though its short 15-20 minutes, it still may not have 2 important features:  Reaching muscular fatigue each set (in major muscle groups)  Allowing adequate recovery between exercise  These are both crucial for exercise that targets the biggest goals we have of optimal strength, lean muscle, optimal body fat, function, and aren't just exercise that makes you tired.  Measure your body composition. Monitor your lean muscle and your body fat percent.  If you're where you want to be, but fatigued and bloated, and like the kettlebell workout I'd suggest you put more rest days between workouts and see what happens. Then over time, use your body composition and muscle mass numbers to inform a need for change or confirm you're doing okay. Last, make a change in your monthly schedule so each week is not the same. 09:00 Questions for Nicole: How's your diet? Your sleep? In midlife, those become more important. A lack of micronutrients or of high-quality protein and whole foods will catch up with you too. Exercise can't help you overcome those.  11:13 Exercise for Your Cycle As for the increased fatigue and bloat before a period, both women who still have a period and those who don't are wise to exercise is in periodization style setup. Exercise for your cycle suggests from the day of your period those two weeks are a time to focus on strength and intensity. That is, plenty of heavy training fatiguing major muscle groups in two workouts a week and doing HIIT 2 or 3 times a week for short 15–20-minute sessions.  In the last two weeks of your cycle, you ease off the intensity and tend more toward higher reps and lighter weights, still reaching fatigue. But in the last week you do more recovery work and based on fatigue you don't “push” through, you may want to take the recovery and do other restorative activities.  10 Day Hot Not Bothered: https://www.flippingfifty.com/hnb-challenge    To review, and summarize the science current for exercise in menopause and for older adults:  Twice weekly strength training              Reaching muscle fatigue in each set             Using 8-10 major muscle groups for total body              Performing at least 2-3 sets of each exercise  Two-three times a week HIIT              No more than 45 minutes a week total HIIT  Movement most days of the week              Catering to personal preferences and personal needs (functional movement)  Adequate recovery between high-intensity exercise   Monitor lean muscle mass and body composition for measures of success.  Other Episodes You May Like:  9 Ways to Measure Fat & Body Composition | Best & Worst: https://www.flippingfifty.com/measure-fat/ TOTAL Body or SPLIT ROUTINE Strength Training in Menopause | #453: https://www.flippingfifty.com/total-body-or-split-routine-453/ Resources Mentioned:  Insiders Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/flipping50tv 10-Day Hot Not Bothered Challenge: https://www.flippingfifty.com/hnb-challenge

Inadequate vitamin intake linked with insulin resistance University of Alabama, May 2 2022.    A greater risk of insulin resistance was revealed among women with acceptable calorie consumption whose folate and vitamin C intake were below the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) values in a study reported  in Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases. Adequate dietary intakes of essential micronutrients are critical to prevent the development of insulin resistance and insulin resistance-related diseases. However, since excess calorie intake linked with obesity is also associated with those diseases, it is important to meet the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) of those micronutrients without exceeding recommended daily calorie intakes. Among women whose calorie intake was categorized as acceptable and who met the Food and Nutrition Board's DRI of folate and vitamin C, the respective risks of insulin resistance were 59% and 66% lower than women who did not meet the DRIs. The study also showed that even with the consumption of over the recommended calorie intake, only 2% of women met the DRI of vitamin D and approximately only 30% met the DRIs of vitamins A and E, further emphasizing the fact that a significant proportion of women consume calorie-dense food rather than micronutrient-dense food.”   (NEXT)   Ingesting soy protein may ease severity of inflammatory bowel disease   Penn State University, April 26, 2022   A diet supplemented with soy protein may be an effective adjunct therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases, Penn State researchers reported after completing a study that included mice and cultured human colon cells. The findings are significant because inflammatory bowel diseases -- including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease -- are characterized by either continuous or periodic inflammation of the colon and represent a significant risk factor for colon cancer. The team found that soy-protein concentrate can exert antioxidant and cytoprotective effects in cultured human bowel cells and can moderate the severity of inflammation in mice that have an induced condition similar to ulcerative colitis. Researchers, substituted soy-protein concentrate into the diet of the mice and removed corresponding amounts of the other protein sources, equaling about 12 percent. They kept human equivalents in mind as they determined the amount. The dietary soy-protein concentrate at the 12-percent dose level ameliorated body-weight loss and swelling of the spleen in the mice with induced inflammatory bowel disease. Soy-protein concentrate mitigates markers of colonic inflammation and loss of gut barrier function in the mice with induced IBD.   (NEXT)   Study finds children with vegetarian diet have similar growth and nutrition compared to children who eat meat   St. Michael's Hospital (Toronto), May 2, 2022   A study of nearly 9,000 children found those who eat a vegetarian diet had similar measures of growth and nutrition compared to children who eat meat. The study, published in Pediatrics and led by researchers at St. Michael's Hospital of Unity Health Toronto, also found that children with a vegetarian diet had higher odds of underweight weight status, emphasizing the need for special care when planning the diets of vegetarian kids. The findings come as a shift to consuming a plant-based diet grows in Canada. In 2019, updates to Canada's Food Guide urged Canadians to embrace plant-based proteins, such as beans and tofu, instead of meat. Researchers found children who had a vegetarian diet had similar mean body mass index (BMI), height, iron, vitamin D, and cholesterol levels compared to those who consumed meat. The findings showed evidence that children with a vegetarian diet had almost two-fold higher odds of having underweight, which is defined as below the third percentile for BMI. There was no evidence of an association with overweight or obesity. Underweight is an indicator of undernutrition, and may be a sign that the quality of the child's diet is not meeting the child's nutritional needs to support normal growth. For children who eat a vegetarian diet, the researchers emphasized access to healthcare providers who can provide growth monitoring, education and guidance to support their growth and nutrition.   (NEXT)   Blackcurrant extract triggers same process as statin drugs   University of Connecticut , April 29, 2022   Polyphenol-rich blackcurrant extract may prevent metabolic dysfunctions induced by diets high in fat and cholesterol, according to research in mice.   The results, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, found the extract reduced the percentage of mice with diet-induced severe steatosis (fatty liver), hypercholesterolaemia and hyperglycaemia.  Total plasma cholesterol and glucose levels were significantly lower in the blackcurrant group compared to the control, yet plasma triglyceride (TAG) level were not significantly different.   The extract contained 25% anthocyanins and 40% polyphenols and the dose equated to a daily human consumption of about 540 mg of the extract and 135 mg anthocyanins.   The researchers said such an ingredient could help reduce disease risk since dyslipidaemia and hyperglycaemia were likely to contribute to metabolic diseases.   Videos:   .  Profound Blood Clots in Major Arteries: Dr. McCullough and Chris Gillespie ( 3 Clips on One page)   Over 17,000 Physicians and Scientists Agree: “There Is No Medical Emergency” – Dr. Robert Malone

There are a relatively small number of people who are responsible for a high volume of property crime and associated public disorder. There are a large number of police interactions with people committing offences such as shoplifting, mischief, possession of stolen property, possession of drugs, and breaching previous orders. This has resulted in frustration and a recent letter from BC Urban Mayors complaining about this issue. The people repeatedly committing offences of the kind described are most often mentally ill, homeless, and addicted to drugs. Someone in this circumstance is likely to commit offences on an almost continuous basis to get money to purchase drugs. They will shoplift things to sell, break into cars, homes, and businesses, sell small amounts of drugs to others, and engage in prostitution. This behaviour causes a great deal of social disorder, impacts many innocent people, and is expensive to deal with. The solutions to these legitimate concerns have not, however, been identified by the BC Urban Mayors. They have suggested that the problem could be solved by stricter bail conditions, a lower charge approval standard, or exempting police from needing to provide Crown Counsel with all the evidence they have collected in a timely way.Having mentally ill drug addicts spend more time in jail for the property crimes they commit will not solve the problem. A jail sentence does not cure mental illness or drug addiction. At the end of each jail sentence, the person is released back onto the street to continue the cycle of drug use and offending. The Urban Mayors further claim that “The solution is not for municipalities to keep adding safety resources – we have been doing that, which has come at the cost of other essential services, programs and infrastructure in our communities.”One program that has met with some success in reducing the impact of prolific offenders has been the Assertive Community Treatment Program. It involves teams of social workers, police, and mental health professionals assertively monitoring and intervening with prolific offenders often on a daily basis. A recent request for funding of two additional police officers to work on ACT teams was refused by the municipality of Esquimalt, along with a request for several additional police officers to work in other capacities. In the City of Victoria, the police department is widely acknowledged to be short-staffed and stretched to deal with high call volumes. Adequate police resources are not a complete solution, but it is necessary. In British Columbia, the provincial Offence Act provides authority to compel chronic alcoholics to undertake treatment. The scheme involves a physician certifying someone as being in need of treatment and a judge confirming the certification after 72 hours. The scheme, which is now fallen into disuse because of the absence of actual treatment facilities, might be a model for people who are addicted to drugs and engaged in repeated criminal activity to support this. The first step to permit something like this would be to create secure treatment facility spaces to treat people suffering from drug addiction, which is commonly combined with other mental health challenges. Additionally, as has already been proposed by the provincial government, the provision of drugs to people who are addicts would both reduce overdose deaths and the large volume of property crimes committed to get money to purchase drugs. It makes no sense to address drug addiction and mental illness by repeatedly prosecuting people for shoplifting or for breaching conditions ordering them not to possess drugs. Stress is a big deal. It leads to everything you and I want to avoid - weight gain, fatigue, depression, chronic disease - all of it.    We can't avoid everything that causes stress but we can help our bodies become more resilient to it.    That's why I wanted to share my friend Doni Wilson with you. Dr. Wilson has been the other main naturopath writing about adrenal health over these years. She has a really good new book out with several of the latest insights about stress recovery.   We had a nice talk about this and here are some of the key takeaways:   (0:34) Introducing Dr. Doni (2:40) Defining stress: its meaning and how it affects our bodies, especially our adrenal glands. (4:44) Naturopathy VS the Conventional Medicine's take on adrenal fatigue and optimal functions. (6:56) A study about cortisol rhythm as a predictor of early death. (7:51) The need to measure the cortisol and adrenaline levels during a stress test to know which adrenal product/treatment suits best. (9:05) Dr. Doni's personal experience in dealing with adrenal distress and her realization of the importance of supporting adrenals. (10:37) Changing stress response and resiliency. (11:25) Dr. Doni's journey in dealing with migraine that taught her how to handle stress and be resilient. (12:18) The 3 steps in addressing adrenal glands: getting out of stress mode, rebalancing adrenalin, resiliency. (15:56) Addressing the underlying cause of stress. (19:01) The need for a (certain) amount of stress for the body to respond, case in point: women in labor. (22:21) Triggers and symptoms of stress. Four Easy Home Remedies for Constipation with Endo Belly

This EndoLife

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 14, 2022 20:49

Today we're talking about the endo belly, but more specifically, constipation. Firstly, let's quickly look at what the endo belly is. The ‘endo belly' is not actually a medical term, but instead is a name the community has coined in reference to the severe bloating we often experience. So, there isn't technically a set definition, but it is generally thought to be severe bloating/swelling that tends to be attributed to endometriosis and is sometimes accompanied by pain. Some experts, articles and endo patients also include gut problems within this term too, but not always. My definition, from my training and from seeing so many clients with these symptoms is that the endo belly is exaggerated/severe bloating, often accompanied by gut symptoms, pain or discomfort - but it is not always caused by endometriosis directly (there are normally contributing factors behind the endo belly). Many people with endo suffer with this bloating or distension plus IBS issues like constipation, and often these can be caused by issues like gut dysbiosis (which is common with endo), small intestine bacterial overgrowth (which according to research could be affecting 80% of us with endo), adhesions from surgery and bowel endometriosis, to name just a few of the contributing factors. So, constipation can result from one or all of these issues, and the bloating itself could also come from one or all of these causes (and the many others not listed here), but the constipation itself could also be worsening your bloating. When you're constipated, you're going to get a build-up of waste, gas and bacteria in your intestines, and the bacteria will also have longer to ferment the food you've eaten, resulting in more gas being produced than usual.  So, what can we do about it? Ideally and in the long-term, we want to address the root cause of your constipation, because at home remedies are unlikely to solve the root cause alone, however, whilst you're on that journey, at home remedies can make a real difference. Full credit to my tutors Dr. Allison Siebecker and Dr. Nirala Jacobi for these great tools.    Drink hot water in the morning Yep, it's that simple. Drinking hot or warm water, like a herbal tea, and making a chewing movement as you drink it, can actually trigger motility (which basically means movement) in the large intestine. It works best if you drink it slowly, though experiment with what works for you.  I wouldn't necessarily wait for constipation to happen to try this but bring it into your daily routine, so you start to build a habit of a morning bowel movement.   Try flax or chia seeds Both flax and chia seeds help to create a bowel movement, but which one you use really depends on your personal reactions to the seeds. Chia is low FODMAP at serving sizes up to 24 grams, so as a result, chia is often safe for people with IBS and even, in many cases, people with SIBO. Chia seeds provide a large amount of fibre, and whilst many people with IBS and SIBO can't tolerate a lot of fibre, chia seeds are often well tolerated so it's a great way to top up your fibre content without a flare – and we all know how important fibre is! You may have noticed that chia seeds absorb a lot of water, and so as a result, they can soften a stool by adding a gel-like consistency to food in your intestinal tract and by adding bulk, which can help form a stool and move it along. Now, be guided by your personal reaction because with SIBO, adding fibre often makes things worse and because everyone is unique, even though chia is generally thought to be safe for SIBO, some people still react – which means their constipation could get worse. So, start slowly with a small amount, like a tablespoon and increase to two if you find you don't have any adverse reactions – just don't exceed 24 g to be safe, although 24g of chia in one sitting is a huge amount, so I doubt you will! Always add a liquid to your chia first, to create the gel-like consistency. You could make a chia pudding with almond milk, add them to oats or add them to a smoothie. Now, with flax, I tend to see that's less well tolerated with people who have SIBO due to the fibre content but see how you respond. To be on the safe side, a low FODMAP serving of flax is 15 grams, or one tablespoon, so start there, though you may personally be able to tolerate more. The serving size found to be effective for constipation in research is 20g.   Some of you may be wondering if flax is safe for endo. Flax contains plant compounds known as phytoestrogens, which mimic oestrogen in the body. Lots of studies show flaxseeds as being beneficial for people who have low levels of oestrogen as it raises them (just like soy) and yet because like soy, phytoestrogens are weaker than our own oestrogen, it should in theory help to lower oestrogen dominance and certainly has shown that with many people. But it seems to depend on the individual response as I've personally experienced worsening endometriosis symptoms with flax and I know my tutors Dr Jessica Drummond and Nicole Jardim have observed similar reactions too. One factor to consider is that the issue isn't the phytoestrogens in the flax but potentially the state of the flax. Flax is very vulnerable to going rancid and becoming inflammatory. It's better to store whole flaxseeds in an airtight container in the fridge, for shorter periods of time and then grind flax seeds fresh (if required to be ground), rather than storing them in a cupboard, in a bag, already ground. So, experiment and see how you feel! You can add flax to oats and smoothies, or you could stir it into yoghurt or a chia pudding.   Eat more fat Adequate levels of fat can aid with constipation, as fat triggers large intestine motility.  Now, you do have to be careful because too much fat can sometimes cause gastro issues in people with IBS, but generally with my clients and students, we focus on two golf ball sized servings of fat with each meal, to support blood sugar levels, and that amount is often well tolerated. If you're not sure, try a lesser serving size and also try fats that are lower in FODMAPs to avoid aggravating your symptoms.  Now, just to be clear, I am in no way telling you to start a low FDOMAP diet, that has to be prescribed by a doctor or dietician and should only be done with a diagnosis of IBS, but to avoid flaring your symptoms with these strategies, you could try low FODMAP options for these. Some good fats include eggs, coconut oil, olive oil and low FODMAP nut butters. A great combination could be to combine one of these fats with your chia or flax at breakfast, after you've drunk some warm water, for maximum effect.   Try the ‘I Love You' massage The I Love You Massage is an easy abdominal massage that you can do on yourself at home, and is designed specifically for IBS problems like bloating, gas, constipation, etc. I've linked to a free video tutorial in the show notes. In my experience, it's best performed at night before bed, as it also helps to stimulate your migrating motor complex, which is a wave like motion in your small intestine, that cleans up the small intestine between meals and most of all, overnight. Whilst the MMC won't directly help with constipation, it will help with SIBO and bloating occurring in the small intestine, and so this massage is targeting two issues at once – constipation through stimulating the large intestine and bloating/SIBO that's occurring in the small intestine. So that's it! I hope one or a few of these at-home remedies help with your constipation. I would love to hear how you get on, so please do reach out on Instagram to let me know! Let's get social! All the units below the 26th floor were completely flooded, and we couldn't get into them. Mold grew in all the units, and the insurance coverage had to be checked. We recommend that you consider adding loss-of-rent coverage to your HO6 or single-family home policy. Many owners don't have that when they're owner-occupant. Then, when they turn it over to us to use as a rental property, the mortgage will continue if they don't have rents coming. If you have any questions, give me a call at (808) 445-9223. I look forward to hearing from you.

This week we dive into one of our top ten lists, the 10 important health benefits of iodine. This critically important nutrient is used by the thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones that control many functions in the body including growth and development. Because your body does not produce iodine, it needs to be supplied in the diet. When iodine intake is poor, the body cannot produce enough thyroid hormones. Tune in to learn more…   Iodine The fact is that iodine is utilized for just about every function in your body. Yet many people are unaware of their body's need for iodine, and that iodine deficiency has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. 10 Important Health Benefits of Iodine Here are 10 reasons why maintaining sufficient iodine levels is an absolute MUST for your health: #10. Iodine Helps Stabilize Your Mood It is well known that low iodine levels can have an impact on the brain, as mentioned above. More recent research has also linked iodine deficiency to depression and anxiety. A 2004 study conducted by German researchers and published in the Journal of Psychiatry and Neuroscience [1] found a link between “alterations of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and mild cases of depression and anxiety.” TSH is produced by the pituitary gland to signal the thyroid to produce more thyroid hormones. Fluctuations in TSH are often an indication that the thyroid is not getting enough iodine to do its job [2].   #9. Iodine Maintains Strong Teeth and Bones Iodine assists in the production of strong teeth and bones by being a key player in calcium absorption. In fact, the connection between low iodine, low calcium absorption, and hypothyroidism has been known by researchers for at least the last hundred years [3] One of the functions of the thyroid is the production of calcitonin, a hormone which helps balance blood calcium levels. This mechanism not only leads to maintain strong bones; it also plays a role in healthy functioning of the nervous system, heart and muscles. #8. Iodine Helps Prevents Hair Loss Besides protecting the skin and eyes from UV radiation, adequate levels of iodine can give your skin and hair a healthy glow. This is because iodine is involved in cellular rejuvenation [4]. Healthy iodine levels also prevent hair loss because of the nutrients supplied to the thyroid gland [5]. Iodine in combination with other essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, and zinc can be a powerful internal tonic for thinning hair. #7. Iodine Ensures Reproductive Health Did you know that Japanese women have the lowest rates of breast cancer in the world? A 2003 report published in the journal Breast Cancer Research postulated that this could be a direct result of eating iodine- and selenium-rich seaweed, which is a staple in the Japanese diet [6 ]. Iodine is fuel for reproductive glands as well as the thyroid. Studies suggest that getting enough iodine can help prevent fibrocystic breast disease, preeclampsia, ovarian cancer, ovarian cysts, vaginitis, polycystic ovary syndrome, and even breast cancer. Enough iodine in the body is also one aspect of a healthy pregnancy [7]. #6. Iodine Is a Powerful Antioxidant According to some experts, iodine may be as powerful in this regard as vitamin C! [8] It can help reduce free radical damage that may lead to gene mutation and disease. It is a great boon for the immune system as it helps clean the blood of harmful pathogens. A 2013 meta-analysis [9] published by the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in the journal Thyroid found that iodine is “an antioxidant as well as an antiproliferative and differentiation agent” which can help clear up free radical damage in many organs of the body. It is also a powerful anti-inflammatory. #5. Iodine Is a Natural Antiseptic Maybe you remember that brownish-red solution your mom used to apply when you had a cut? For everything from cleaning wounds to purifying water, iodine is a sterilizing substance that can kill unhealthy organisms, bacteria and viruses. A 2015 Iranian study found that a low-concentration iodine antiseptic used after oral surgery helped instigate first-stage wound healing in the surgery area, leading to faster recovery and less chance of infection [10]. #4. Iodine Protects You From Radiation It is a natural protectant from UV radiation for the eyes, according to a 2004 Austrian study [11]. Iodine supplementation can also be used to help individuals suffering from long-term radiation exposure. The effects of too much radiation can happen because of accidents, medical devices, and the radiation emitted by TSA scanners at airports. A 2008 study [12] published in Radiation Research discovered that “terahertz radiation” like that found in airport x-ray scanners is linked to genetic mutation. Adequate amounts of iodine in the body is a must for anyone who travels a lot. #3. Iodine Protects the Body From Toxins Fluoride, chlorine, and bromine are dangerous chemicals found in everything from new car interiors to tap water. They can also severely hinder thyroid function. Maintaining healthy iodine levels can block these “halide” chemicals from accumulating [13]. Iodine can also protect against xenoestrogens – “chemical mimics” – that can lead to reproductive conditions like ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids [14]. Some experts, such as author and natural health advocate Dr. Mark Sircus [15], point to the possibility that iodine may also help with mercury detoxification. #2. Iodine Helps Your Brain Stay Sharp Iodine deficiency has been linked to cognitive decline in countless studies and is one of the “world's most prevalent, yet easily preventable, cause[s] of brain damage,” according to the World Health Organization [16]. Iodine deficiency during pregnancy has been linked to autism in a recent University of Arizona study [17]. Furthermore, a 2013 Australian investigation published in the journal Frontiers in Neuroscience found that iodine supplementation improved the perceptual reasoning of slightly deficient children considerably [18]. #1. Iodine Is Necessary for Metabolism and Thyroid Function Metabolism is the act of converting food into substances your body can use. It helps the body break down food into nutrients via the thyroid gland and other mechanisms. Iodine is the literal “fuel” for the thyroid. Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are the main hormones that the thyroid produces. For these hormones to be created, they need iodine. Good thyroid health also helps your body keep a steady heart rate, regulate temperature, improve digestion, and maintain a healthy weight.  [19]    Nascent Iodine –  is also known as atomic iodine, monatomic iodine, Atomidine, or colloidal iodine. The term “nascent” refers to iodine that has an incomplete number of electrons. This gives it an electrical charge, according to a report conducted by the non-profit Weston Price Foundation and others. Many forms of dietary iodine break down into iodide in the digestive tract. In this state, iodine-dependent organs like the thyroid and reproductive organs cannot use it. The charge of nascent iodine helps it stay intact and absorb quickly and thoroughly into the organs that need it most.   Resources: [1] Testing the association between thyroid dysfunction and psychiatric diagnostic group in an iodine-deficient area [2] How Your Thyroid Works [3] CALCIUM AND IODINE METABOLISM IN THYROID DISEASE [4] A Comparison Study of Growth Factor Expression following Treatment with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation, Saline Solution, Povidone-Iodine, and Lavender Oil in Wounds Healing [5] Vitamin deficiencies are a lot more obvious than you might think [6] The thyroid, iodine and breast cancer [7] Iodine supplementation for women during the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum period [8] Thyroid Hormones Directly Alter Human Hair Follicle Functions: Anagen Prolongation and Stimulation of Both Hair Matrix Keratinocyte Proliferation and Hair Pigmentation [9] The Extrathyronine Actions of Iodine as Antioxidant, Apoptotic, and Differentiation Factor in Various Tissues [10] Effect of low-concentration povidone iodine on postoperative complications after third molar surgery: a pilot split-mouth study [11] Iodide protection from UVB irradiation-induced degradation of hyaluronate and against UVB-damage of human conjunctival fibroblasts [12] Terahertz Radiation Increases Genomic Instability in Human Lymphocytes [13] Interaction of bromine with iodine in the rat thyroid gland at enhanced bromide intake [14] Endocrine disrupting chemicals and uterine fibroids [15] Iodine and Detoxification [16] Micronutrient deficiencies [17] Analyses of toxic metals and essential minerals in the hair of Arizona children with autism and associated conditions, and their mothers [18] The role of nutrition in children's neurocognitive development, from pregnancy through childhood [19] Endocrinology: An Integrated Approach Organixx Iodine History of U.S. Iodine Fortification and Supplementation NIH Fact Sheet for Professionals Iodine Deficiency - American Thyroid Association The Great Iodine Debate - Weston Price Foundation Organixx Nascent Iodine What You Need to Know About Iodine & Iodine Deficiency Symptoms What Is Povidone Iodine and How Is It Different From Nascent Iodine? Creating a workplace environment that encourages and enables women to take on senior leadership roles continues to be a thorny issue.  Only this week it was revealed that the government is expected to launch a campaign that will set targets for every FTSE organisation to have a least 40% of board seats taken by women.  The campaign is also likely to encourage organisations to increase the 'pipeline' of women candidates to take on senior leadership roles.  Setting targets is all well and good but do they address the fundamental issues that women face when climbing the ranks into senior roles? The 3 Barriers To Gender Equality At WorkYou would think with the introduction of The Equality Act (2010) and the gender pay gap report for firms with a headcount of 250 or more, that gender equality should be sorted right?  Well no, not really.  This week's Oven-Ready guest believes that there are 3 big barriers to overcome before the gender equality issue can truly solved.  The barriers are:1. The provision of flexible working2. Adequate child care3. Re-framing of leadership traits and behavioursRomanie Thomas is a former senior headhunter who witnessed first-hand just how difficult it is for women to take on senior roles despite being better qualified, better leaders and better suited.  Romanie is the CEO and founder of Juggle, a platform and eco-system for senior professionals who work flexibly.  She reveals that today, less than 10% of business leaders are women.  Her vision is to grow this percentage to 50% by 2027.  So what are the fundamental and societal issues in the way?The provision of Flexible Working Women need to feel confident that flexible working isn't going to kill their career.  Organisational culture and hiring policies  need to change to give women with caring responsibilities  the opportunity and confidence to take on senior roles.  Adequate child careThe Tony Blair foundation recommends we treat child care provision as essential economic infrastructure much in the same way as the Biden administration does in the US.  Access to affordable child care is as important as building new roads and railways.  Without it, women are relying on a network of formal and informal provision that stops them getting on.Re-framing leadership traitsToo many organisation's confuse male over-confidence with competence and in fact this misplaced confidence often masks mediocrity and distinctly average performance.  Organisations need to revisit their hiring touch points to ensure they embrace a range of leadership styles particularly the more collegiate and collaborative style often displayed by women.Resources:https://juggle.jobs/about/https://www.linkedin.com/in/romaniethomas/?originalSubdomain=ukhttps://institute.global/policy/back-future-how-remote-working-can-work-womenhttps://www.ft.com/content/ad209215-c0cf-4ffd-a9b8-5dbd26bd1280https://www.ft.com/content/c7f234b8-2c8c-49cf-8ea9-05c223553f3fhttps://ovenreadyhr.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/podcasthost/Twitter: @OvenHrTell me me what YOU thinkTell me what you think of this interview.  Email me at chris@ovenreadyhr.comOven-Ready SurveyThe show is almost a year old and I'd love some feedback.  Here is a link to a very short and anonymous survey: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/MXYMC29Rate, Review & ShareIf you enjoyed this show, please share with your friends and please remember to rate and review! To listen to the full episode, download a transcript and view all the other Oven-Ready HR podcast episodes or find out more about Oven-Ready HR and Chris Taylor your show host visit https://ovenreadyhr.com
