This is the first episode of a new project, Manchester United: The Lost Tapes. You can find The Lost Tapes on its own feed, everywhere you find podcasts. Enjoy.---Few footballers have had a transformative impact to compare with that of Eric Cantona at Manchester United. When he arrived at Old Trafford from Leeds United, the club were still licking their wounds after passing 25 years without a league title - ironically, marking the occasion by coming agonisingly close in a battle with Cantona's then-club.In November 1992, the relationship between Cantona and Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson had deteriorated. Cantona had scored the Premier League's first-ever hat-trick, and his immense talent was not in doubt - but his discipline was. Wilkinson had brought Cantona to Leeds as recently as January after the Frenchman had been effectively thrown out of his domestic league. The Leeds manager was known as Sergeant Wilko for a reason; however, so too was Eric nicknamed Enfant terrible.Wilkinson found himself with an unexpected solution when he attempted to strengthen his defence. He needed a full-back, so asked his chairman Bill Fotherby to enquire whether Manchester United would allow Denis Irwin to return to Elland Road. United chairman Martin Edwards said no - but, after a brief discussion with Alex Ferguson, made a counter- offer. Could Manchester United sign Eric Cantona? A deal was swiftly agreed. Leeds felt they were losing a troublemaker. The world of football felt Ferguson was taking a gamble he could ill afford.Written by Wayne Barton. Narrated by Patrick Barclay. This is Manchester United: The Lost Tapes. Stories about United's rich history, told in a way you've never heard before. Written by Wayne Barton, narrated by Patrick Barclay and produced by Studio 1878.Episode One: CantonaEric Cantona's arrival from Leeds United transformed Manchester United after a 25-year title drought, reshaping the club's fortunes and igniting the Premier League's imagination. Internal conflict at Leeds and Cantona's infamous disciplinary issues under Howard Wilkinson, culminated in a startling twist when Leeds approached United about signing Dennis Irwin. Instead, United countered with an offer for Cantona—setting in motion one of football's most pivotal transfers and redefining what it meant to be a United legend. Some episodes coming later in the season include ...Bitter RivalsIn the late 1990s and early noughties there were no more fierce rivals than Arsenal and Manchester United. From the mass brawl at Old Trafford in 1990, to trading titles in 1997, 1998 and 1999, two epic FA Cup semi-finals and pizzagate, no holds were barred.Welcome to HellIn 1993, Manchester United ended the 26-year wait to win a league title. Their reward for that piece of history was to compete in the European Cup. United had qualified for the semi-finals in each of their five campaigns under Sir Matt Busby, winning it in 1968. The club's first foray into the tournament tin almost a quarter of a century was to end in stunning, controversial fashion, with one of the most memorable ties in the history of the competition. This is Manchester United's Welcome to Hell.KnightonIt is 1989 and Michael Knighton is on the Old Trafford pitch juggling a football and scoring at the Stratford End in front of a bemused crowd. Knighton had secured a £20m acquisition of Manchester United, agreeing to purchase shares from then club Chairman Martin Edwards. The investment would be put towards improving the first team and rebuilding the Stratford End. Yet, within a fortnight the deal had collapsed amid acrimony and accusations that Knighton didn't have the money to complete the deal. This is the inside story from those who covered it on the ground.More to come ... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

It was the year of the Sky revolution in football but for Jon Holmes it was also the end of Gary Lineker's career in England as he prepared to move to Japan and ultimately into the television studio. Leeds United won the last First Division and their manager Howard Wilkinson was the last English manager to win the championship. It was the year that saw an unfancied Denmark team win the Euros and John Major return to Downing Street by beating Neil Kinnock. It was a year that provided Paddy Barclay, Colin Shindler and Jon Holmes with much to discuss. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Crank up the Simple Minds soundtrack, dust off the fireworks, make way for the cheerleaders and dodgy versions of Baker Street. The Premier League has arrived and it's a whole new ball game, especially at Old Trafford. As Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson presides over the transfer from hell and sees his side fall from their position as champions, it's left to Aston Villa to push United to a first title since the days of Best, Charlton and Law.

Move over Pep and Mikel… And how did Europe's most lethal striker not get a minute for England at Euro2000? We were always doomed to fail! Ep 412 - Blowing the Whistle on Danske Bank Guest: Howard Wilkinson As Russia continues to disrupt the world, we revisit a previous Conversation with Allard Prize for International Integrity co-winner Howard Wilkinson, the man who blew the whistle on the largest money laundering case in history. Wilkinson uncovered and exposed an international money laundering scheme that reached all the way to the Russian secret police, which included relatives of President Vladimir Putin. So corrupt is the regime that more than 230 billion euros passed through bank accounts at the Danske Bank in Estonia. Wilkinson reported his suspicions to senior officials at Danske Bank – to which the bank responded by letting him go, muzzling, and paying him off. His report, while not acted upon at the time, eventually came to light and he says, “Charges have been laid against 12 former bankers in Estonia and another 10 Danish bankers have been served with preliminary charges.” The scandal rocked the financial world in Europe and the US, where the Securities Commission and the Department of Justice are carrying out investigations. We invited Howard Wilkinson to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the unveiling of the largest money laundering scheme in the world. Join us at a Conversations Live event, sign up for advance notice about upcoming events at conversationslive.ca

At this year's Euro 2020 final, England watched on in agony as the men's national team lost to Italy on penalties. But, taking a step back, this is the most successful squad in 55 years. So how did a team go from World Cup winners in 1966 to decades of disappointment to today, one of the youngest and most exciting national teams to watch. Well, they changed the way they train their players. In 2012, St George's Park opened - a brand-new facility in Staffordshire that promised to change England's football team forever. At the opening event, chairman David Sheepshanks said to the press "judge us in 10 years". In this episode, host Dermot Murnaghan speaks to David Sheepshanks; Howard Wilkinson, a former footballer, manager and one of the founders of St George's Park; and journalist, football historian and author Jonathan Wilson.

Freaking Out About Cincinnati’s Opening Day with Randy Freking
In this episode, Howard Wilkinson joins the discussion as another special guest. Howard and I will explore the myths surrounding our holiday: why does Cincinnati have the privilege of hosting the season opener? (It’s not because of the 1869 Red Stockings.) Are we always the first game of the season? (No, and that is not a recent phenomenon.) Have the Reds always been scheduled to open at home? (No) Did anyone ever issue an edict (No) or are some of these traditions more a result of geography (yes) or pressure applied by the Reds? (Yes) Your host, Randy Freking, is the author of “Cincinnati's 150-Year Opening Day History: The Hoopla Started with a Parade” and co-author of “@Titanicstruggle: The Best of MARTY BRENNAMAN” Get your copies at openingdaybook.com and BestofMarty.com
Few clubs have gone through as much as Leeds United have in the past 30 years. From the extreme highs of winning the title and becoming a European force to the devastating lows of financial ruin and multiple relegations; it's been quite the ride for their supporters, one of whom is award-winning audio producer Ed Morrish. Ed speaks with great wit and warmth about what it's been like to follow Leeds since the early 90s, making clear his admiration for the team of champions Howard Wilkinson built as well as making no bones about how sad it was to see that same team reach the end of the road in the 1996 League Cup final. There's also focus on a few individuals from that era - among them an enigmatic Frenchman and a thrilling Ghanaian - before the conversation moves onto the brilliant side David O'Leary guided to the brink of Champions League glory at the turn of the millennium. Just how good were they? And why did it eventually go wrong? Not surprisingly, Peter Ridsdale crops up and Ed is unsparing in his criticism of the man who 'lived the dream'. He's far more effusive, however, about the man who led Leeds back to the Premier League - Marcelo Bielsa, explaining just what makes the Argentinian a much-loved and revered figure among the fans. Finally, Ed talks through his all-time Leeds XI before going back in time and changing a couple of moments from his Leeds-supporting past. So download, listen and love. And after you have, please Rate and Review. It would mean a lot. Cheers!

They were once the kings of England. And they so nearly came close to being the kings of Europe. Sixteen years of solitude. But Leeds are back where they belong today, gracing the Premier League once again thanks to Marcelo Bielsa. The team talk all things Leeds ahead of the new club issue focusing on the Elland Road outfit.
This week Matt and Jermaine are joined by arguably Leeds United’s greatest ever goalkeeper, Nigel Martyn. Indisputably one of the nicest men in football, Nigel talks about his time at Elland Road - being signed by Howard Wilkinson, adapting to George Graham’s style, the heady days of David O’Leary’s reign and how the arrival of Terry Venables signalled the end of his time at the club. It’s a fascinating interview with a stopper who stands fifth in the all-time Premier League clean sheets standings. Oh and Matt asks him about campanology (who knows). Ep 319 - Blowing the Whistle on Danske Bank Guest: Howard Wilkinson He is the man who blew the whistle on the largest money laundering case in history. Howard Wilkinson uncovered and exposed an international money laundering scheme that reached all the way to the Russian secret police, which included relatives of President Vladimir Putin. More than 230 billion euros passed through bank accounts at the Danske Bank in Estonia. Wilkinson reported his suspicions to senior officials at Danske Bank – to which he was let go, muzzled, and paid off. His report, while not acted upon at the time, has come to light and he says, “Charges have been laid against 12 former bankers in Estonia and another 10 Danish bankers have been served with preliminary charges.” The scandal has rocked the financial world in Europe and the US, where the Securities Commission and the Department of Justice are carrying out investigations. Wilkinson is the co-winner of the Peter A. Allard Award For International Integrity, which was awarded in Vancouver on October 21, 2020. We invited Howard Wilkinson to join us for a Conversation That Matters about the unveiling of the largest money laundering scheme in the world. Gordon Strachan is one of the greatest characters in the game. He played under Sir Alex Ferguson as a young man at Aberdeen, before travelling south to join up with his mentor again at Manchester United. After 5 years at Old Trafford, Gordon crossed the Pennines to join Howard Wilkinson’s Leeds United revolution, and then moved to Coventry City where he played in the top flight with the sky blues until the age of 40! In addition, Gordon has managed Coventry City, Southampton, Celtic, Middlesbrough and Scotland no less, and there are few who have better stories than his! From pretending unsuccessfully to be Billy Bremner, to making Noel Whelan move into the Strachan family home, just so Gordon could try and keep his wayward striker out of trouble! The challenge here is to try and listen to this episode in public while keeping a straight face! Recorded remotely during lockdown, so please forgive the sound quality.
Welcome to our Big Interview Icons series, where we shine a light on a legend whose name has lit up some of the conversations I've had with my guests over the last five years of The Big Interview. First up is Eric Cantona. How to describe Eric… a Harley-Davidson-riding, collar-turned-up, French rebel genius. He was a totem for an era of fellow magicians and mavericks in England's top division.Simon Stainrod played against King Eric in France and predicted that Leeds boss Howard Wilkinson wouldn't like him, and that Eric would be better off playing for someone like Alex Ferguson. ‘You can't coach him… you can only put ideas in his head,' concludes Simon. Chris Waddle played alongside Eric at Marseille and believes he flourished when he moved across the Channel because English fans love a rule-breaker, someone unpredictable. We then hear from Gary McAllister and Gordon Strachan who speak about Eric's spell at Leeds. Gary says that he wasn't integral to the club's 1992 league title win. Gordon takes a different view, that Eric made the difference as the other players started to tire. Gordon, like Simon Stainrod, saw Manchester United as Eric's perfect fit.EnjoyGraham See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Whites travelled to Bramall Lane for a Sunday lunchtime fixture and a showdown with Vinnie Jones. Two second half goals saw the points go back up the M1 with Howard Wilkinson's men. With levisolicitors.co.uk/thesquareball See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

David De Gea was the villain for Manchester United against Chelsea but could the result be the best thing for United in the long run? Manchester United sacked Louis Van Gaal after winning the FA Cup so why should this bother them. But If they are going to learn lessons from it, maybe they should be far reaching. Having watched Frank Lampard’s Chelsea out play Solskjaer’s United, Dion Fanning has a suggestion for his replacement which might be the boldest move since Alex Ferguson’s ended a phone call with Howard Wilkinson with a query about Eric Cantona in 1992.

(No) Did anyone ever issue an edict, (No) or are some of these traditions more a result of geography (yes) or pressure applied by the Reds?(Yes) Your host, Randy Freking, is the author of Cincinnati's 150-Year Opening Day History: The Hoopla Started with a Parade. Uh-ah, Cantona!

Micky Adams joins us to talk about his autobiography - My Life In Football Biteback publishing writes: Having spent almost four decades in English football – playing and managing in every professional division – his experience of our national game is almost unrivalled. As a player, his career took in some of the biggest clubs in the country, including Leeds United, Leicester City and Southampton. And he shared a dressing room with some of the biggest stars in the game – Steve Bruce, Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier – to name but three. After turning to management, Adams gained four promotions with Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion, Port Vale and into the Premier League with Leicester City. In a searingly honest portrait, the Yorkshireman reveals some of the stories behind those roles and also some of the best-loved figures in our game. He details how he should have been sacked by Leeds United on Howard Wilkinson's first day at the club, how he ended up in a police cell with David Speedie, lays bare Le Tissier's genius and the booze-fuelled tour that ended with Shearer jeopardising his career and the author swapping punches with Neil Ruddock. As a manager, the tales come just as thick and fast. How about the time when he spent a night crawling on the floor looking for Ron Atkinson's lost tooth, or what it was really like working for enigmatic Fulham owner Mohamed Al-Fayed? And, of course, there is the inside story of Leicester City's ill-fated trip to La Manga when the club made the headlines after becoming entangled in a sex scandal. Honest and entertaining, Adams lifts the lid on almost forty years' experience in a brutal, yet entertaining, account of life at the sharp end of professional football.

The latest Big Interview clip show is about the gaffer, whoever he may be. Pretty much every single footballer we spoke to during the first season of these podcasts had at least one incredible story about a manager they had played under. In this podcast you'll meet motivators, bullies, innovators and comedians. Sometimes, that's just one guy we're talking about. We're going to start and finish with two people who played under Jose Mourinho – although it is fair to say that Damien Duff and Kevin Bridges don't have too much else in common on the footballing front. In between those two, Chris Waddle tells us what he now sees as the method behind the bullying of Arthur Cox at Newcastle United. Gary McAllister then tells us how Howard Wilkinson transformed Leeds United from a Second Division team into a side capable of winning the English Championship. Joe Jordan shows us the revolutionary preparations undertaken by Don Revie; Peter Beardsley rooms with his Fulham manager Kevin Keegan, in a flat above the...
