This week, we call in to Philadelphia for a conversation with the highly-theatrical pianist and tireless, much-adored performer Adam Weiner, who for the last decade has gained a cult following around the world fronting his soulful bizarro-rock outfit Low Cut Connie. Some artists have retreated into obscurity during the pandemic shut-down; some have made turned lemons into personalized live-stream lemonade. But Adam took it to another level when he launched his often twice-weekly vaudevillian interactive web show “Tough Cookies” from a back bedroom in March. Charging around his small home stage like a schvitzing piano preacher, often losing clothing along the way, Adam has learned nearly six hundred covers in the last eight months alone - from Barry Manilow to Cardi B's "WAP" to Macho Man to an entire Little Richard set, which he performed to honor his hero after his passing. He then interviews anyone from Beyonce's dad to members of Sly and the Family Stone - in short, it's a rollercoaster every week that you kind of have to watch to believe. Alongside his 2020 LP Private Lives, Low Cut Connie's heartfelt and sweat-dripping sets have gained him some famous supporters: Elton John for one, fellow New Jersey-born hero Bruce Springsteen for another - and that up-and-coming playlist presenter Barack Obama unexpectedly placed Low Cut Connie's defiant cabaret rocker “Boozophilia” on his must-listen list. Indeed, this taping - which often showed Adam jumping from his piano to his guitar to play favorites like the Kinks-esque “Revolution Rock N Roll,” initially had to be delayed so he could play an inauguration event for new president and Philly-piano lover Joe Biden. While Adam is basking in some much-earned attention, it hasn't always been an easy road. He readily admits to scrapping by on side jobs into his mid-thirties, for years playing around dim New York City piano bars as his sequined alter-ego Ladyfingers. If Adam's learned anything during this strange era, it's that people desperately still need live music - in all its spur-of-the-moment, sweaty glory. One of the more moving stories he tells is seeing groups of nurses in beleaguered hospitals taking a much needed break to watch his livestreams. Much like his hero and patron Elton John, Low Cut Connie's songs can leap from intimate folk-rock to greasy soul to bombastic musical theater and back with ease - and his relentless spontaneity keeps fans waiting for that he will do next.

What makes you unique? Adam Mendler is the Chief Executive Officer of The Veloz Group, where he co-founded and oversees ventures across a wide variety of industries: Beverly Hills Chairs, a leading office furniture e-tailer; Custom Tobacco, a one-of-a-kind cigar customization e-commerce platform; and Veloz Solutions, a technology consulting and software development practice. Adam remains active in each portfolio company, providing strategic guidance and support. Adam also provides business thought leadership as a speaker to businesses, universities and non-profit organizations; as the host of the leadership and personal / professional development podcast Thirty Minute Mentors; as an expert regularly cited in national media outlets; and as an advisor, consultant, coach and board member. In this episode, Adam speaks about how he was so busy counting his money; he didn’t realize the issues in his businesses. Adam and his business partner have ten different ideas, and they wanted to execute all of them. However, they burnt through all of their money and had their backs up against the wall. If Adam and his business partner were going to continue as entrepreneurs, they needed to focus and stop what they were doing. You can’t successfully start ten businesses at the same time. The biggest mistake they made was not having the focus. When you’re a bootstrap business, you need money coming in regularly. They were so busy and distracted that they lost sight of working on the cash flow businesses.

In Episode 82, Jim Cassidy gives us a primer on Covenant Theology. As Israel, shaped by the law, becomes an analogy of Adam as Adam is in covenant with God in the garden, a pattern is seen between Adam and Israel. If Adam disobeys, he is exiled from the Garden, as is also the case with Israel. God, however, is the covenant keeper, providing redemption for his people in doing what they are unable to do.

Why do you dress differently in the morning if you are staying home alone from how you’d dress if you’re going to be seeing many people? Are you more comfortable in ‘fashionable’ clothing than in utilitarian coverups? You might consider an adventure vacation, right? Swim with the sharks in South Africa? Sure. See penguins in Antarctica? Why not. How about a week at a nudist resort in Jamaica? That would be something different, so are you up for it? I suspect not. Why not? Do you have too much of that old-time puritanical repressiveness? C’mon, live for a week like a healthy naked animal. Why am I not persuading you? Why should we grant government the power to punish us for taking off our clothing in public? If you don’t like my naked appearance, don’t look; but don’t stop me from undressing how I choose. If Adam and Eve had nice green clothes made from fig leaves, why did God make them additional outfits out of leather? Would human beings come up with the idea of clothing with zero cultural input? Episode 23 We are joined by author, professor, and host of the podcast, "The Bible for Normal People", Dr Pete Enns as we ask the question, "If humans evolved, what do we do with Adam and Eve?" For many people, this is the main reason why they cannot seriously entertain human evolution. To do so would seemingly fly in the face of the veracity of scripture. If Adam is just a myth, does the whole thing fall apart? Pete doesn't think so, and neither do we. Join us as we learn to think about the Bible like the people who wrote the Bible and discover that these archaic stories still have a lot to teach us. This Week on the Live Your Light Show: This week’s guest on the Live Your Light Show, we welcome Adam Flores. We asked Adam to be a guest on the Live Your Light Show because he is a young revolutionary leader in business. For many years he struggled to get his message and business ideas out into the world. His frustration led him to become a radical student in leadership, social media, and Internet marketing. His ability to combine the best fundamental principles in each category paved the way for Adam to build his business beyond a million dollars in sales. Although he’s had a lot of success, it wasn’t enough for Adam. His genuine passion and charisma to see people and organizations win in the marketplace has been his driving force to become an expert in his craft. He now spends his time consulting for individuals, businesses, and organizations across the country. I hope you enjoy. In This Conversation We Cover: How Adam started from the very bottom & became a self-made millionaire Adam was 5-years-old when he witnessed his parents’ split due to financial reasons. In his eyes, he was stripped out of the women he loved the most because of money so he decided at a young age that he was going to be wealthy. He associated that you have to have money to stay close to the ones you love & Had to seek healing from this later on. This is an example of using the negative events in the past to pave the future. That’s where his ambition came from. How he became a millionaire by 23-years-old How he entered the coaching world. How Adam made the difficult decision to leave his steady ‘safe’ job to follow his passion and live his light by starting his own business. This episode features a student question and a special appearance by Adam Weisbart. I recently had a student in class who was struggling to get her team to participate during retrospectives. This is a fairly common problem for teams that are either trying to get the hang of how to run a retro, or teams that may have stuck with a particular tactic for so long that it has stopped working. I invited Adam Weisbart to join me for the podcast. If Adam's name sounds familiar, it may be because you've taken a class from him, seen him speak at a conference, watched the video "Shit Bad Scrum Masters Say," or because you've used his Agile Adlibs or his retrospective facilitation kit, Recess. (We'll be spending time on those last two during the interview.) If you've got teams that aren't fully engaging during your Retrospectives, you are not alone. This podcast has some ideas that should help you get that turned around. As we begin to look more into the idea of being a faith prepper, one of the key elements to understanding our position in Christ is to try to get a firm grasp on our union with Him. After all, it seems the most common phrase in Scripture regarding our position is "in Christ" or "in Him". But what does that mean? And what kind of union with Christ does that phrase imply? Let's put on our theology hats for just a moment and look at the two types of unions spoken of in Scripture about Christ. Two Types of Union First, our union with Christ can be seen as a federal (head) or covenantal union (called Federalism). Romans 5:12-21 shows each of us as being in Adam before salvation and in Christ after salvation. And God established Adam as a representative or federal head of the human race. If Adam continued in righteousness, we would also have been considered to have continued in righteousness, being in Adam. But if Adam sinned, we too would be considered as also having sinned, being in Adam. This is where we begin to understand original sin. If Adam sinned and fell by the transgression of God’s command, then we would also be considered to have sinned in him and Adam’s sin judgment and subsequent death would pass on to each of us. And, as we know, Adam did sin and death was passed on to each of us. This is the proof of our identification with Adam. But Jesus did not sin and, by living a perfect, sinless life, not only demonstrated for each of us a practical and perfect righteousness in His own life, but He also died for us who would be united to Him in faith. See 1 Peter 3:18 ––“the just for the unjust". Thus, those judged sinners because of Adam’s sin are now declared righteous because of Christ’s righteousness. Our sin was imputed to Him and His righteousness was imputed to us. Therefore, because He is justified, we are justified. Because He is raised, we are raised. Because He is exalted to heaven, so are we. And because He now sits at the right hand of the Father in glory, so also are we seated. Second, our union with Christ can be described as an experiential union with Him. This refers to the actual effects in us of our relationship and union with Christ. It’s how our union with Him relates to us in real-time. It is like positional vs practical sanctification. And it can be seen most clearly in Jesus’ teaching about the vine and branches in John 15. Let me suggest you turn to John 15 in your Bible and read along as you listen to this teaching. Why? Because knowing who you are "in Christ" is a fundamental first step in becoming a faith prepper. And becoming a faith prepper is a necessary first step to becoming the kind of believer you will need to be to navigate the times that are coming. The following is a study on Our Union with Christ and focuses on John 15.
Are you tired of guilt-ridden burden-giving joy-sucking religion? If so, then you need Jesus! If Adam and Eve, Abraham and Sarah, and even Moses needed Jesus, we all need Jesus.

And finally you get the reward. You're at the summit and you have a 360 degree view: panoramic. Absolutely gorgeous. You step back to take a selfie and BOOM you twist your ankle. Oh brother! You are eight miles from town. What on earth do you do? That my friends, is the subject of today's bonus episode on how to treat and prevent sprained ankles. I have got such a treat for you! Who would have thought sprained ankles could be so interesting. This interview had started to be a general first aid wilderness episode but we got so engrossed and it was so interesting that we've decided to make this a series instead. In today's interview the doctor's going to teach us what do we do if we should sprained ankle while we're out in the wild. Kit: 00:44 This is one of the most common mishaps that can happen to us. We'll also learn how to treat it how to tell whether or not we are at risk for a weak or a sprained ankle. He has talked me into adding something to my backpack which is something I very rarely do: I try to be as minimalist as possible. But I learned about a new product today that is new to me in the backpacking world, and it is now going to be part of my day and backpacks in the future. And I also found out that I was fitting my boots improperly. So there's lots of great information here. Like I said, who would have thought sprained ankles could be so interesting? Let's get right to it. Kit: 01:24 Welcome to the Active Travel Adventure's podcast. I'm your host Kit Parks. Our guest today is a foot and ankle specialist who focuses his entire business on athletes and keeping those athletes active even after injury. I thought it would be cool to bring him on because unfortunately, sometimes when you're out in the wilderness and you're miles from the nearest town to medical care, you're going to need to fend for yourself. Not only is our guest a much in demand speaker at medical conferences on running injuries and treatment, he's the author of Runner's Heal Painhas written a chapter in a medical textbook, and has written and presented countless papers. He's not a doctor just in the academic sense that you sometimes find… he's a doctor who actually walks the walk, or I should say runs, because he's an athlete himself. He's completed 15 Ironman tournaments as an Iron Man. Kit: 02:07 If you're not familiar with that term, is it insane endurance event. You start by swimming almost two and a half miles then you bike over a hundred miles. And just for giggles you follow that up with a marathon race of over 26 miles — all without a break. He actually did this once in less than 11 hours. And in 2015 he earned the distinction of Ironman All World Athlete. He's also a rock climber, having climbed multiple multiday big wall climbs, such as Lurking Fear on El Capitan– and that was during a storm. He's an avid adventurer who, with a partner in 1995, had a plane drop the two of them in a remote corner of the Alaskan range where they spent a month trying out a new route on Mt.. Debra and Mt Hess. Yes, I realize he's far more hardcore than we are, or at least most of us. But the important thing is he's a doctor who knows what it's like to be out in the wilderness and left to your own devices. Kit: 02:55 So today I had the honor of introducing you to Dr. Christopher Segler also known as Doc on the Run. Kit: 03:11 Dr. Segler, to begin with what exactly is a sprained ankle? Dr. Segler: 03:14 Sure. So a sprained ankle is is basically where you have a ligament that supports the ankle. In most cases, it's one of the ankles on the outside of your ankle. Sort of away from the midline of the body where you feel this lump of bone on the outside of your ankle. There are three little ligaments over there, and a sprain technically is where you have stretched or a very minor strains where you basically overstretched and have developed tiny little perforations in the collagen and that forms the ligament. The worst kind of sprain is where you completely rupture the ligament and that's a grade three sprain. A grade two sprains where there's a partial little rip that you could actually see at the edge of it. But none of that really matters that much as you can't see it. So you know grading ankle sprains doesn't really help you very much, but it's basically where you are walking along and you step on something, sort of on the arch side of your foot or under your big toe that pushes your foot over so that your foot kind of rolls to the outside and you then stretch and strain those ligaments in a way that they actually rip or tear Dr. Segler: 04:25 And you know that in itself is not such a problem, but when you're on a trip and that happens then it can sort of evolve over a period of hours or days to where it actually gets considerably worse. And once that happens it actually really can disrupt your trip because you can have a very difficult time walking. And it can get progressively worse. A lot of time these things catch people off guard. Kit: 04:48 So if we twister sprained ankle What do we do? Is there anything we can do? Dr. Segler: 04:53 There's always something you can do. So the first thing is to be aware that it can happen right? And and then, I mean, I can share a story about how that can happen and this was a there was a trip where I was actually rock climbing with a friend of mine, and obviously I know to about ankle sprains, right? So I treat them, I lecture to physicians about how to not miss subtle ankle fractures that appear to be ankle sprains but are actually teeny tiny little fractures that are really easily missed. You know I've researched those and when I was in residency I won an award for that, so I go to conferences, and they say I'm an expert on this. So I should know of all people. But a friend of mine, his name is Adam, and we were both rock climbing in Yosemite and we're on a very long route. Dr. Segler: 05:37 It's fairly easy as far as a rock climb goes but it's very very long. So it's definitely an all day rock climb. And we were just sort of starting the day it was super early in the morning and we were a few hundred feet up and Adam was leading. So he was going first and there's this one place where it's pretty easy but it's sort of sloped and he was stepping up from one position to another and he fell and he didn't fall very far… just a couple of feet, but he landed on a sloped surface. And when he did, it rolled his ankle over– sort of classic ankle sprain problem where he just sort of slipped on a sloping surface. And he said he sprained his ankle. Dr. Segler: 06:22 And so he came back down to where I was and I said, “Well how is it?” And he said, “Well I think it's OK. Just give me a second. I think it's fine, let's just continue on.” So we did. Now Adam has, I guess he's kind of a tough guy. So he has a fairly high pain threshold. He wanted to continue. He probably on some level didn't want to wreck our trip because we had driven all the way to Yosemite to go do this climb that day. Dr. Segler: 06:48 And so I think you know half of it was Adam just wanted to continue and not really call any attention to himself, and the other part was that he just thought he could ignore it. So the thing is, when you sprain your ankle… when you roll your ankle like that, the first thing that happens is you get natural endorphins that suddenly, like within a few minutes, dull the pain considerably. So part of it may be that Adam just didn't really recognize how bad it was because he had these natural endorphins that protect us from that discomfort. So if you do that, and you're on the way to the car and you're going home it's no big deal. Dr. Segler: 07:21 But if you're heading up a long climb or you're heading in an isolated area where there's no cell phone reception and you have a long way to go to your next stop, that can be a problem. So I asked him, he said it was OK, I didn't even really check it because he said it was ok, so I thought, “Well OK, this must be fine.” And we continued on. The problem is, there is a point on that rock climb where you're way up and really high up a few hours in and once you sort of make this one traverse you cannot get back down unless you get to the top. It's very very difficult to get off the climb at that point. So we got there, and Adam said he thought it was OK but it was getting kind of sore. Dr. Segler: 08:03 But we continued anyway. Within a couple of hours after that, he was having a lot of difficulty. The ankle really started to swell and it got progressively worse pretty quickly at that point. And that was a real problem because it's a very hot day. We were not really prepared to be there for the entire day. We thought we were going to move quickly and we didn't have enough water. So when it's very very hot, you need water. And it was very very hot. And so we both got severely dehydrated and then the last few sections climb, I remember Adam was moving really slowly and he would stop. I would hear him grunt in pain and he would just sort of stand there on the side of the wall just stopping to like kind of recover before you continue on. Dr. Segler: 08:51 So it got more and more painful as the day went on. That turned into a really serious adventure. So it ended up what was supposed to take us six hours ended up taking us more than 12. And we got down that night were both severely dehydrated and it was not really what we had planned for. And that's the thing, is that this could have been all preventable by a couple of things. First of all, if if we had had any way to do something about the swelling as was starting to happen, it wouldn't have become a problem. If Adam had done some stuff to strengthen his ankles before that, it would not have been a problem. But we didn't do either of those things so he had some ankle instability that put him at risk of this injury. Dr. Segler: 09:31 And then when it actually happened, we didn't really stop to assess it and do something about it right away. And if we had done something as simple as taping his ankle or even having him put a compression sock on, then it would not have swelled and become as painful as it was, and really put us at risk of a more serious problem. We really did have the risk of getting stranded on the wall and it was way after dark when we finally got down. So repelling off a huge rock climb where we're a quarter mile off the ground, in the dark, is not really ideal but that's what we had to do. And so really, just knowing what to do when this happens really can make a big difference at getting you to your next stopping point without your adventure turning into a misadventure. Kit: 10:18 So how do we assess it? We're not a doctor. We don't have you there on the trail with us. What do we do? How do we see if this is just something we can blow off, or do we need to stop and address it right then? Dr. Segler: 10:27 That's a good question. So the first thing is soreness. So if you roll your ankle and it hurts, ten you did something, right? And I have a lot of sort of inherent instability because I had damaged my ankles in a number of ways many years ago. I fully rehabilitated them and I still do lots of active stuff around on trails. I do lots of adventure travel sort things… rock climbing, all kinds of stuff lots of hiking. And I'm not at risk now. But the thing is when you sprain your ankle, first of all it hurts. And so it's really simple: if you feel that lump of bone on the outside of your ankle and you push around and it hurts anywhere around there those are where the ligaments are so the specific location of the ligaments doesn't really matter. Dr. Segler: 11:12 So if you push around there there's a joint capsule that holds all the fluid in your ankle and any portion of that joint capsule will probably be sore if you sprained your ankle. Now the problem is that it starts to swell within a short period of time. And if you can do anything to decrease the swelling, that will make the biggest difference. The problem with Adam was early in the morning he had sprained his ankle. He was trying to ignore it. He wanted to ignore it, and then it just got worse because he didn't do anything about it. Now at that time, realistically, when we were on the wall, I actually had a pair of compression socks — they were in my backpack. Dr. Segler: 11:55 Interestingly, on the way home I had Adam put the compression socks on and he improved considerably, just while we were driving home in the middle of the night. But, if we had just stopped long enough to really consider that, and I said , “Well OK, you sprained your ankle. It's probably going to swell. That's predictable. So why don't you just put on this compression sock?” We probably would not have had much of a problem. So it probably would have gotten a little bit worse but not nearly as bad as it did. Dr. Segler: 12:19 So now yesterday I saw a guy at home who sprained his ankle. And it was two weeks ago: he still has swelling. And so that's all residual swelling from where they had that initial blow up where it was really, really swollen. And you have to prevent that. That's just too much inflammation. And that's what really disrupts people. They get so swollen that it's really painful. It's hard to hike, it's hard to walk, and then it really disrupts your trip. Dr. Segler: 12:42 So initially if you can just tape it or even use compression socks… like a lot of people they go on adventure travel, they are going to some faraway destination, they're taking a plane to get there. And many people will wear compression socks just on the plane as a preventative thing. And if you have those compression socks, they don't weigh very much. They may not be the most comfortable things but if you put it on as soon as your sprain an ankle, your chances of it is not swelling as much are way better. So that's probably the simplest thing. Lots of doctors would argue that you should tape the ankle to support and protect it, but the truth is, is that even if we talk about it right now about how to exactly do that, it's a sort of technique thing, and it's not easy to remember. Most people are not going to carry a roll of athletic tape with them when they go on a hike. Dr. Segler: 13:31 And and it's not realistic, but the compression sock… it's so easy to bring a pair compression socks, and and if you do sprain your ankle and you just put the compression socks, on it will make a huge difference. Kit: 13:44 if you're not familiar with compression socks, I put a link in the show notes at the ActiveTravelAdventurist.com Web site. I know is at least one of these socks going in each of my packs from now on. What a great suggestion! Kit: 13:55 Is there any risk of doing permanent damage by walking, like if Adam had kept going going going, could he have done something permanent? Or as long as you eventually make it back you're OK? Dr. Segler: 14:07 That's a good question. So the short answer is yes, there's always a risk you could do more damage. But, that's only if you really have a fracture. And now fractures do happen. So I will tell you like one of the research studies I did when I was in residency was on this subtle fracture pattern called a lateral process fracture. The specifics of it aren't important, it's just that when I was in med school we were taught that the occurrence of lateral process fractures or how often they actually happen was actually really, really, really rare. And so we were taught that it was 0.86 percent of all ankle injuries involved. One of these little subtle ankle fractures on the outside of your ankle right where it hurts when you have an ankle sprain. Dr. Segler: 14:55 So what I did was, I got it approved through the University Institutional Review Board. We reviewed three years worth of patients that came through the university hospitals and clinics and looked at a huge number of patient. So it was in the end, after we eliminated all the people who didn't qualify, it was 1480 patients. And all we were trying to do is figure out whether or not these things were really that rare because it didn't seem like they were that rare. And sure enough that it occurs and almost 10 percent of all ankle sprains. So basically, you have a one in 10 chance of actually having one of these subtle fractures. Dr. Segler: 15:28 So the thing is if you have a standard ankle sprain it doesn't really hurt that much when you start walking on it. It may hurt a little bit. It gets way worse if you keep walking on it just because it keeps swelling and it gets more and more swollen. The tissue on the inside of the joints sort of swells inward and then that swollen tissue is getting pinched between the bones when you move your foot up and down as you walk. So that's what really happens with an ankle sprain. But if you have one of these subtle fractures or if it's a bad one then it's certainly going to hurt a whole lot more. And if you have that, yes, there is a risk that you could do more damage. So if you're concerned that you have one of those because it is really really painful initially, then there is a risk that you can make it worse by walking on it. Dr. Segler: 16:12 So you don't want to just ignore it. And the biggest mistake we made was that we basically, Adam and I both just more or less ignored it thinking well it will be OK. It's just a minor thing, but it got worse. And so if you have that kind of pain that really is super sensitive and it's really tender when you press on it then you're better off if you if you take it easy. Kit: 16:35 So if I'm understanding you, if right after we twist it if we have immediate hard pain then we may have done that, that 10 percent fracturing. If it's OK and then progressively it gets worse, it's more likely just a sprain? Dr. Segler: 16:48 That's true. That's true. So yes, the subtle ankle fractures, the're first of all that's one out of 10 so it's not really common. But it's also associated with a more severe injury like, (for example) you're wearing a heavy pack. You slip on the side of some loose terrain… some scree or something like that. Dr. Segler: 17:08 And and you have a significant fall. Whereas ankle sprain is, like Adam didn't even fall dow. His foot just kind of flipped over because he was landing on a sloping surface. And and it sort of startled him, but it didn't really hurt that much. But you can imagine that if you, as opposed to just stretching the soft tissue which is basically what an ankle sprain is, if you actually cracked the bone, that's definitely going to hurt more. And then every time you move it it you're moving this fracture… this broken piece of bone. You have jagged bone kind of bumping up against each other where the two pieces are. And that causes a lot of pain. Whereas if you just have an ankle sprain, many times when you're moving it around, it actually starts to feel better just because, I don't know, it kind of pushes some of the fluid out of that area. And it may not hurt that much when you're first moving it. So the more tenderness you have generally the worse it is. Kit: 17:58 In both cases, or one on the other, is it a good time to take vitamin I or ibuprofen? Dr. Segler: 18:06 Well yes. So this is, well, good idea. It depends on your goal. So the thing is, is that if you just have a sprain and you, let's say you are somewhere in a remote area, you're on one of these adventure trips, right? And you're not exactly in a convenient area: you don't have cell reception. You're in Glacier, right? If you're, like on your podcast on glacier, if you're in the middle of nowhere on a trail, you have no cell reception, you have miles to go before you get to the next camp, the next stopping point, or a ranger station, and you really need to get there… almost like a self-rescue kind of thing. I think it's better to take ibuprofen because it will significantly reduce the discomfort. Now, although it is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, and just because the name we always think it stops inflammation, they really won't stop inflammation that way. Dr. Segler: 18:52 Like if Adam had taken a bunch of ibuprofen right when he sprained his ankle, it was still going to swell. It doesn't really work as an anti-inflammatory until you've taken it for a number of days. But it will certainly decrease the discomfort. So if the goal is to get somewhere, to get to safety, to get to your next stopping point, I think it's worth doing. However if the goal is to get it to heal as quickly as possible, taking ibuprofen or any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like, Aleve, Nuproxen, any of those things, it's actually counterproductive because studies have shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatories can actually decrease the healing time for tendon to bone interfaces. And all a ligament is, is basically collagen that connects two bones. So when you have an ankle sprain, you actually have damaged that interface where the bone touches to the collagen ligament. Dr. Segler: 19:45 And if you take anti-inflammatories it can slow down the healing process. So if you think you just have a standard ankle sprain and you need to take it for pain control to get somewhere I think that's fine but if you're trying to get it to heal as quickly as possible I think that can be counterproductive. Kit: 20:01 And Doctor, what kind of dose of ibuprofen would we take if we're just trying to get to the next place? Dr. Segler: 20:05 Well that's a good question. So the thing is, is that without an assessment you should never take more than the over-the-counter doses. What that means for Ibuprofen is basically 400 milligrams or two of the over-the-counter pills. Anything more than that is a prescription dose. But you know many patients do that. They will frequently just on their own take full strength prescription strength doses which would be three or four of them but that's not a good idea unless you talk to your doctor. Because if you have any kidney problems or any that sort of stuff, G.I. gastrointestinal problems, if you have stomach ulcers, anything like that, that can be a terrible idea to take high doses or prescription doses of ibuprofen. Kit: 20:42 Are there any techniques you can give us that will help us prevent the injury in the first place? Dr. Segler: 20:47 Before we talk about how to prevent it, one other thing that actually can really work extremely well if you sprain your ankle, to shut off the inflammation, that's even better than ibuprofen… which doesn't happen everywhere for sure, you know in the Grand Canyon, you kind of only have one choice for water and that's at the bottom of the canyon. But if you're in Glacier, if you're in a number of national parks, if you're in Yosemite, there are rivers, most of which are formed by glacial melt, right? Or are snow melt and they're very very cold, right? And so if you ice the ankle that's one of the best things to stop inflammation. So if you happen to have a mountain stream, that's cold running water, that just sitting with your ankle in the river or stream you know for 10 minutes can make an enormous difference because it constricts all the blood flow and really prevents that inflammation from starting very very effectively. So if you happen to roll your ankle and there is some sort of mountain stream nearby that's cold running water, particularly anywhere like glacier or those types you know in the Himalayas, any of those areas, that can make a huge difference is stopping the inflammation Kit: 21:56 Is there any risk when you take your feet out of your shoes/your boots and it swells up that you can't get them back in? I guess with the rivers they would stay constrained but if you're resting your feet, is there… is that a possibility when you say it swells? Dr. Segler: 22:10 There is a possibility that could happen but that's going to happen either way. The boots aren't really tight enough to stop the swelling. Compression socks would prevent that from happening. But if you are going to take your… and a lot of people want to do that. It feels better to take their boots off. But the truth is, is that the best thing you can do, if you don't have access to a glacial stream or you didn't bring your compression socks or whatever, if you can basically just lie on your back with your feet straight up, leaning against a tree or against a rock, or whatever, and you have your feet way up above your heart. That makes a huge difference is stopping the inflammation because the blood flow has to fight gravity and go uphill at that point. And so keeping your boots and your socks on I think is better because any external compression will help also reduce that inflammation that happens after an ankle sprain. Kit: 22:59 So what kinds of things can we do to prevent problems in the future. Dr. Segler: 23:02 Right. So the first thing is to figure out whether or not you're really at risk. Not everybody has ankle instability but the first thing is, if you've ever sprained your ankle, you're at enormous risk for developing another ankle sprain in the future. So if you roll your ankles when you're a kid, if you sprain your ankles in college playing basketball, if you roll your ankle one time on the beach walking in the sand, you're at risk. And most patients who have had those sort of remote history of an ankle sprain, some time long ago, many years ago, they always think, “Well that was 20 years ago. Can't be a problem.” And so I see these patients all the time and even when I do Skype consult for somebody, for example, they'll tell me that they sprained their ankle a long time ago but it doesn't matter anymore. Dr. Segler: 23:46 And I'll say ok and I have them do a very, very simple test. And all I do is I tell them OK: stand in the middle of the room and hold your arms out straight. So it looks kind of like the the the drunk test on the side of the road. And I just stand there with feet together hold your arms out straight now close your eyes and they kind of roll their eyes more or less and say OK. And then I say OK , now great. Now pick up your right foot. So if their previously injured foot is their right foot, the bad one, pick up their bad foot. So that is just suspended in the air. Kind of like looks like a stork, the way they pick up their leg. Dr. Segler: 24:21 And basically standing there with their arms outstretched bouncing on the right foot with their eyes closed and they may kind of wobble a little bit but they can more or less just balance. And I'll wait until it's been about 10 seconds just to confirm that they can actually balance OK in that position, balancing on one foot. Then I say, OK great. Now put your right foot on the ground, you know, your bad foot. Pick up your good foot, your left foot, hold your left foot up in the air with your eyes closed, your arms outstretched, to see if you can balance. And though usually they keep putting their foot down, losing their balance repeatedly and because their arms are outstretched, they can see how far their arms are swinging before they catch their balance. And at that point what's happening is they actually tore the nerve fibers in the joint capsule when they rolled the ankle so they can't really tell the position of the ankle anymore. Dr. Segler: 25:08 And so the ankle to them feels weaker but it's really just that they've lost what we call proprioception or the ability to determine the position in space based on the ankle moving. And that happens every time you roll your ankle. So if you roll your ankle, you don't have the ability to feel that anymore. And so you know somebody like Adam that has maybe sprained his ankle before and he falls, he lands on the surface, and it starts to roll his ankle, he doesn't notice it's rolling until he feels that he's falling because his vestibular system, or the balance center in his middle ear, actually picks up the motion of him sort of moving sideways to start to fall. Dr. Segler: 25:48 And then it's too late. Your the muscles around the ankle, the peroneus brevis tendon, those things actually stabilize your ankle, they can't pull your foot back under you at that point, and you roll your ankle. So if you do that test where you balance on one foot with your arms outstretched and your eyes closed and you can tell that one foot is considerably weaker than the other, or you have a lot of trouble trying to balance on one foot, then you can do some simple exercises to really strengthen that ankle and actually get that sort of proprioception, or the ability to tell a position without thinking about it, you can get that back by using the stretch receptors in the muscles and it's really just a simple routine. Dr. Segler: 26:31 So there's there's basically a couple of really simple exercises. One of those is where you cross your feet. So like if you're sitting in a chair with your legs outstretched and you cross your legs and you put your little toe joints together and then you push it will stabilize the the the ankles the muscle that supports the ankle the peroneus brevis tendon primarily. And I could actually send you a video that you can put on the Web site if you'd like, or link to it but it's just a short video there may that shows you exactly how to do that. And that's something you can do while you're sitting on a plane while you're sitting at your desk. If you do that that I think is the one exercise that can cause the most increase in strength for anybody with ankle instability. Then for people that have really sprained their ankles, I give them a very specific rehabilitation thing that's like phase one, phase two, and phase three. Dr. Segler: 27:16 Phase three is where you use a wobble board to deliberately train your ankle to become stronger. And I can send you that as well if you want to supply it for people who listen to the podcast The phase three part is what really strengthens your ankle and makes you more or less immune to those kind of sprains that otherwise you'd be so susceptible to. Dr. Segler: 27:38 And literally like spending three minutes a day you could strengthen the ankles in just a couple of weeks. So you'd be at dramatically lower risk for having these kind of problems. Kit: 27:50 If you go to the ActiveTravelAdventures.com Web site, I'll post the video that Dr. Segler talked about for the exercise. I've also posted a video of me doing the self test like the stork to see what my ankles look like. And also have a link to the wobble board. You can find it on the site by either looking up Bonus Episode number two, Dr. Segler, ankles or any of the key search terms should be able to pull it up for you. Just type any of those terms in the magnifying glass search bar. Kit: 28:21 What's the deal on having the shoes having the ankle support? I've always worn like the Merrell trail shoes so they're like a sneaker on the top but then have the trek on the bottom. How important is it to have ankle support? Dr. Segler: 28:33 Well that's a good question. You know so here's the thing. So I actually really wondered about that. And when I was a student in med school, I actually did a research study and because I wondered about this. It was supposed to be about climbing injuries. But the truth is, this study was really about hiking to rock climbs. And so what I did was, I did a study on frequency and mechanisms of injury among rock climbers. And it was the largest type of that sort of study ever done. I actually got a grant from the American Alpine Club to do that investigation. Dr. Segler: 29:09 And that's the thing is, that it's really about the hiking to the climb because I had the suspicion that climbers don't necessarily get injured that much from falling. Dr. Segler: 29:17 It's really from tripping and slipping and spraining ankles and stuff like that while they're riding a heavy pack, wearing relatively lightweight hiking shoes, on their way to the climbs. And many times there's no trail. It's usually some kind of unstable surface. But what I did was I basically sent out surveys to 3500 members of the American Alpine Club and then it got back 603 completed questionnaires. Now the thing is is that the really interesting thing for everybody listening to this is that 80 percent of climbers who reported spraining an ankle while hiking to the base of a climb were wearing those sort of lightweight hiking boots or hiking shoes that you're talking about. And the overwhelming majority of people who fractured an ankle while hiking also were wearing lightweight hiking boots. So lightweight hiking boots are very popular because they breathe. They usually have uppers that are sort of mesh or some lightweight material so that they are comfortable when they're hot and they're light weight. Right? Dr. Segler: 30:16 So they're they're not heavy, and they're more comfortable, but they don't protect you very well. So heavyweight backpacking boots are way more protective. They're also a lot stiffer. They're hard to get used to. You are more risk of getting blisters if you have those and haven't really broken them in. But after that study, I started really put in a lot of effort into encouraging people hiking and rock climbing to wear more sturdy boots. And I think that they actually do really decrease your risk of having an injury if you have more stable heavyweight backpacking boots. So if you pick up the shoe and you hold it in your hands, you try to twist the sole out of shape. It's virtually impossible to twist it out of shape. Dr. Segler: 30:59 It's also very very difficult to bend the sole out of shape as if you're pushing the toes up. But with lightweight hiking shoes and hiking boots is very easy to do that. So I believe they will protect you because they do provide a lot more support provided they're laced up and they're laced appropriately. If you have them loosely laced or you don't lace the top laces they actually really won't help you as much. So then at that point you have a more stable platform underneath you but it doesn't really protect you from ankle sprains So I think that it's important to really think about your footwear, and if you're doing a lot of hiking on the trip, if you can wear the heavyweight boots it actually will protect you some. Kit: 31:41 I'm actually just shopping for some. I'm getting ready to prepare for a trip out to the Himalayas where they are recommending that I wear boots, and at the stores I'm seeing more of the synthetic material instead the leather. Does make a difference? I mean does leather provide a benefit that the synthetics don't? Dr. Segler: 31:55 That's a good question. So in the past I would have said 20 years ago for sure leather was better. But lots of companies now, like La Sportiva and some others, they have really made big strides in terms of increasing the stiffness of heavy weight backpacking boots that are made of synthetic materials. So there's a benefit to everything right? So the synthetics are usually lined with Gore-Tex or something. They're basically waterproof if they do get wet, they dry out faster. If leather boots get wet, they stay wet. If they're wet and they're Gore-Tex leather boots, it doesn't matter your feet don't get cold or wet but the boots are way heavier if they're soaking wet. And you may not think that's a big deal but if you're hiking in the Himalayas and you're hiking 10 miles you have to pick your foot up and put it down a lot of times. Dr. Segler: 32:41 And you know that increased weight does make a difference over time. So the synthetic materials are generally lighter. And you can tell because if you try to twist the boot out of shape — you find like the biggest strongest guy in the store and ask him, see if he can bend this thing… so bend the sole and it won't bend, and you squeeze the heel counter the part of the back of the boot that goes around your heel and it's rock hard and very very stiff, then it's going to be just as supportive as a really heavy weight backpacking boot that's made of leather. Kit: 33:12 What advice can you give us about choosing the right pair of boots? Dr. Segler: 33:23 That's a great question. So the thing is, as many people are concerned that they're going to get blisters or black and blue toenails. And so one common error is that they'll get shoes that are too big. Many times they'll say well maybe I'll get them that are big because I'm going to wear two or three pairs of socks with them. We don't need to wear two or three pairs of socks unless you're going someplace where it's 40 below zero. So if you have boots that fit you appropriately you're at a lower risk of getting problems. So if you get boots that are too big, first of all you have to remember that the shoe break or the curvature that's under the ball the foot is in the wrong position. So when you walk when your heel comes up off the ground your toes are still on the ground and your foot's bending at the ball the foot that's where you want the curvature of the shoe. Dr. Segler: 34:01 If you get a shoe that's one size too big for you the curvature is out in front of you. And those patients then that have boots that are too big they're basically kind of like vaulting off the end of the shoe and it makes things awkward and it can put you at risk of all kinds of different overuse injuries. So it's really important to make sure they fit appropriately. Now most stores, if you go into some store that specializes in hiking boots and that sort of stuff, they'll have people that are knowledgeable about how to fit you correctly and they'll check you and make sure you get the right size shoes. Obviously you don't want your toes banging up against the inside of the boots, but you also don't want them too big. So I would just caution people to make sure that they're getting the right sized boots by getting an appropriate fitting. Kit: 34:42 Should we get rid of the inserts that come with them and put something else in? Dr. Segler: 34:45 I don't think it matters unless you have foot problems. So that's a very popular thing to do. There's a whole range of over-the-counter inserts that are really good. There's lots of different ones available and they can provide more support. Dr. Segler: 35:00 It just depends upon whether or not you need them. And the other thing is, that if you're going to do that, you should definitely do it when you buy the boots. Because the inserts that come in most hiking boots are thinner than the over-the-counter orthotics or over-the-counter inserts that go in the shoes because they're designed to have more support. So because they have more support they have more material underneath you. And if you get boots that fit you perfectly and then you buy some inserts that are thicker by three or four millimeters and you put them in your shoes and suddenly it lifts you up and you may be hitting your toes against inside of the toe box and you have less room in the shoes. So then you've just sort of by buying the inserts may have made your shoes effectively like a half a size too small. Kit: 35:42 Before we sign off is there anything else important that we should know about the treatment and prevention of sprained ankles? Dr. Segler: 35:49 I think that's the main thing. I mean the reality is, is you know you don't need to go prepared with splinting materials and planning for every disaster, right? You have to carry everything you take when you go on an adventure trip and you want to make sure you're prepared, but taking some compression socks is really the simplest thing you can do. Knowing that you can basically ice it by soaking your foot and ankle in a in a stream or elevating it if you do actually sprain it. That's really all you need. But then it's really just doing that self-test at home to see, “Am I or am I not really at risk for problems?” And if I am, then really just trying to do some quick exercises. Just really like, truly like, a couple of minutes a day to get some more ankle stability can go a long way to preventing the kind of problems that could otherwise wreck your trip. Kit: 36:35 Doctor, you also have a podcast can you tell us about that, please? Dr. Segler: 36:41 I do. So, I have a podcast called the Doc on the Run podcast, and mostly I treat injured runners and triathletes. So I see all kinds of patients. I mean, one of the people yesterday was a rock climber. I see lots of different patients. People get injured hiking and everything else. But basically what I do is, I I just realized a long time ago that a lot of times when you go to the doctor they tell you something that just doesn't sit right. Dr. Segler: 37:07 In fact, my my first episode of that I was racing motorcycles professionally and I had damaged my knee and the doctor actually said, “Well if it only hurts when you're riding motorcycles you just quit riding motorcycles.” And then what I learned was that doctors would also tell people, “Well if it hurts when you're running you should just swim. Or if it hurts when you hike you should just do something else.” And the reality is, it's not the doctor's job to tell you what to do. It's the doctor's job to get you back to your activity whatever that is. If you want to hike and you have problems hiking you need somebody that's going to help you get there. And if you want to hike 10 miles a day, then your doctor should help you get to hiking 10 miles a day. So basically I created a podcast to help people understand how to deal with those injuries and how to continue maintaining activity while they're injured so they don't lose all of their fitness. I mean because, let's face it if you're going to go on a long trip you spend a lot of time training, them when you get injured, you lose all of that fitness. And that can be very very frustrating. Dr. Segler: 38:04 I created a podcast to try to help people understand all these different kinds of injuries and help them figure out how to maintain their activity so that they can get back to those those activities as quickly as possible. Kit: 38:15 I noticed on your DocOnTheRun.com Web site you have lots of resources. How about telling us a little bit about those please? Dr. Segler: 38:23 Yes, there are lots of resources. There are lots of different videos, lots of sort of self-diagnosis tools, lots of worksheets to help people figure out what to do and and even some worksheets like one I think came out, well it's coming out tomorrow actually. Basically the idea of when you go to a doctor and they tell you that you need a fractural walking boot, for example. It's basically a worksheet where all you do is printed out, and it tells you what questions to ask your doctor. And that can be useful for anybody with any kind of injury when they want to get back to activity. Because you have to sometimes, when you go to the doctor, you have to get them to slow down and to actually pay attention to what your desired activity is. Dr. Segler: 39:07 So if you say, well I sprained my ankle and the doctor says just take six weeks off, but you're leaving for a trip to go to Glacier National Park in four weeks. That's not really going to work. And so you need to sort of get the doctor to slow down and say, “OK wel,l if I want to go to Glacier do this hike in four weeks, how do I get there?” And it's really just a lot of resources like that where you, a way to help you manage your doctor's visits and get the information you need from the doctor. Because the truth is, it's the doctor's job to go to school, get all the training, learn all this stuff that it takes to help you get better. It's your job as a patient to go to the doctor ready to extract all that information from the doctor. And that's what you really have to do when you go see a doctor, when you have all these injuries and you want to stay active. Kit: 39:46 I'll be sure to put a link to that in the show as well. And I'm also going to put all of your social media contacts but is there a best way for people to reach out to you? Dr. Segler: 39:54 Well the best way is just to, you can go to the Web site to DocOnTheRun.com and send an e-mail through there. You can also e-mail me directly it's just Dr. Segler D-R-S-E-G-L-E-R@DocOnTheRun.com [drsegler@docontherun.com]. Kit: 40:08 Dr. Segler We really appreciate your time. You've given us some great information and I hope we can get you back on another episode. Dr. Segler: 40:13 Allright that sounds great. Thanks. Kit: 40:15 I hope you got as much information out of this program as I did. And please visit DocOnTheRun.com and also check out his podcast. I'll have links to both on the Web site and at ActiveTravelAdventures.com. If you know a hiker or a runner, be sure to share this episode either on Facebook or via email. I'm going to be covering more what to do when something goes wrong on the trail as future bottoms episodes. So if you have questions don't hesitate to e-mail me at Kit@ActiveTravelAdventures.com on that or any ideas for future episodes. I love hearing from you and love your feedback questions and ideas. I'll see you next Thursday. Until next time Adventure on!

How could God have created the world in 6 days when geological data shows the earth is over four billion years old? How does the Bible’s description of human creation align with scientific evidence supporting evolution? If Adam and Eve were the first couple, where did their son Cain's wife come from? These are the kinds of questions that come up today when Bible-believing Christians read the story of creation in the opening chapters of Genesis. The various answers are often fuel for furious and acrimonious debate that has led to an artificial division between faith and science. While these questions may be important in our progressive world, our pre-occupation with them has meant we’ve actually missed the main point of the story. The problem lies in the questions themselves. Genesis was written at a time when people were not asking the same kind of questions we’re asking today. Theirs was a world where science hadn’t even been invented - when there was no such thing as the “scientific method”. Understandings about the world was simple - the earth was a flat disc separating the waters below and the waters above. All of it originated at some point of time with the gods. In the Genesis story of creation, God didn’t bother taking time to correct readers’ cosmology and explain that water isn’t held up by a dome with windows that allow the rain to fall through. Genesis 1-3 is not a scientific account given to explain how the world was created. Far more important issues were at stake. Genesis was written to show us who we are, why we're here and what we’re supposed to do. The answers it gives have framed the foundation of Christianity and have become the bedrock of Western civilisation. Listen to the podcast! The Creation Story is about Who We Are To begin with, the creation account tells us who we are, but you’re unlikely to notice it without an appreciation of the ancient context. In the time of Genesis, religion was an integral part of life, but it was nothing like the religious world we know today. Worship was polytheistic, meaning people worshipped many gods with each deity closely tied to some aspect of natural phenomena. In this world, the gods acted like over-inflated humans. They were male or female; they fell in love, fought each other and got into bad moods. Thus the aim of worship for the ancients was to keep the gods happy - particularly the ones whose help you needed at the time. If you wanted a good crop, you made sacrifices to the rain god; if you wanted a relationship, you appeased the deity of love, if you wanted to have a baby, you went to the fertility god. To do that, you would visit a temple where the presence of the god was said to dwell. There you would make an offering, bowing to the image of the god whose favour you wished to garner. It is against this backdrop that the truths of Genesis shine most brightly. In the biblical account, the scene is a garden temple where the presence of the one true God dwells and where his only ‘image” is the flesh and blood he created (Genesis 1:26-28). Unlike the inanimate statues furnishing the rooms of ancient temples, this image represented his/her creator and was made in his likeness. Thus humanity becomes the pinnacle of all creation, exalted above all other living things. As Genesis portrays it, men and women have God-like qualities and are fearfully wonderfully made (Psalm 139). They come from the dust of the earth, yet are destined for glory and honour (Ps.8:5-6). The big story of Genesis tells us who we are. The Creation Story is about What We’re Purposed to Do But more than this, the creation story also tells us what we’re designed to do. Images in ancient temples always represented the god in whose name the temple was built. In the Genesis account, humanity - the image in God’s garden temple - has been tasked with God-like activity. They have been given domain over all of the earth (Genesis 1:28). Like the owners of a house,

Dennis the Quizmaster is back this week for another round of video game trivia! Who will come out as the master of video game knowledge this week? In Not Fake Game News, we discuss the new Vive VR Pro and Wireless Connector that made its debut at CES 2018 this past week, Microsoft perhaps adding a new achievement system, and a full rundown of the recent Nintendo Direct Mini and all the announcements it came with. We then have a session of Game Shaming where Asad convinces Adam to play and stream the seemingly weird but horrifying Doki Doki Literature Club. If Adam is in a psych ward next week you'll know the reason why. Enjoy!
If Adam returned from the grave and took your place in life right now, where you live, with your job, your home, sleeping in your bed, and driving your car, it is pretty likely that he would be a better business man than you, have a higher IQ than you, have a better physique than you, and accomplish more than you ever will. Based on what we know of him, it is very possible that he could take what little you have right now in life and use only what you left him to turn himself into a millionaire in less than 30 days...but then, he'd still die and go right back to Hell where he came from without repentance, and we have no record that he ever repented for his sins. So what does this hypothetical scenario I just described have to do with you? Well, he was kicked out of the Garden, and you were born outside of it. You have to get back in, and he never will.
We begin the 2nd stage of evolution as it moves from the individual Archaic) to the collective. This is the Tribal stage or level. Tribal begins with a very closed understanding. For example, the beginning is limited to biology/genealogy. Abraham is the Genesis of Tribal consciousness. Time Magazine, in 2002, wrote about the significance of Abraham in religious history. Time labels Abraham as a representative of particularism. But is that a fair assessment? Is that true but partial? Could Abraham take God Identity from the particular to the universal? If Adam is a universal symbol for sin and death, could Abraham be a symbol of deliverance from sin and death into a universal symbol of life? Abraham is always related to the concept of Promise. The Promise begins in 1st tier as a great nation (singular). The Promise finds its fulfillment in 2nd tier by God blessing ALL THE NATIONS. **NOTE: Use the VENN. Nation to all Nations/Particular to Universal/Form to Formless/Religion to Spirituality itself.** Is Christianity a 2000 year old form or particularism? Is it time for another growth movement in our interpretation? We acknowledge that millions still find Jesus as a religion as meeting their life conditions. But, we begin a new conversation for those who have left Christianity and those who are seeing Jesus as God’s servant for an ALL NATIONS (universal) outcome. Romans 1:17 “for the righteousness of God is being revealed from faith to faith.” This faith to faith trajectory is defined as faith of Abraham to faith of Christ. Abraham introduces spiritual consciousness beyond the self, meaning, that faith looks or reaches outward. Adam introduced self as source (of God identity) and now Tribal Abraham, through faith, introduces all that lies beyond the self, which is to say, all that relates to the realm of Formlessness, Spirit and God.

Adam started off on what he thought was the path to happiness through pursuing wealth. By 19 he was interning on Wall Street and looking to make it big. While following what he thought was his career path, his 1,000 person semester at sea cruise ship was severely damaged and for a period of a few hours it appeared that certain death was the only likely outcome. Having come so close to dying at such a young age, Adam suddenly gained a new sense of priority. While backpacking through the countries he was able to visit as part of his time at sea, Adam would ask one child in each country what they want most in the world. And, one child’s answer from India would forever change his life… “A pencil”, the boy said. That became the moment that inspired Adam to want to provide quality education for every child in the world. Adam’s $25 was the first “donation” Pencils of Promise received when he started it, followed shortly by 400 of his friends and their friends donating $20 each to attend a Halloween party. He had raised $8,000 from that one event and never looked back… Adam notes, “Your sense of personal discovery begins where your comfort zone ends.” He faced challenge after challenge and “no” after “no” when first getting started, but it never stopped him. Not because he had passion, but because he had PURPOSE. That was his never-ending source of motivation, his purpose. Through his hard work and the efforts of his team, and the generous donors who have contributed over the years, they have built over 250 schools, brought education to over 30,000 children, and they now break ground on a new school every 90 hours. Without the right mindset, Adam would have never been able to grow his organization to a staff of 80 and accomplish all of those incredible numbers. A big part of that is realizing that as the owner or the founder of the organization you can’t do it all, you can’t maintain the attitude that nobody can do all of the tasks in your business better than you do. Therefore, he knew he had to build an organization and a culture that would help him fulfill his original mission. Among many wonderful initiatives Adam maintains throughout his organization, one of the most impressive is that they cover all of their overhead costs through private donations. Therefore, 100% every dollar donated by the public goes to help build schools, which is almost unheard-of in the non-profit world. That fact, along with Adam’s story and takeaways, are simply remarkable. Again, Adam, we are honored to have you as the first speaker to start the Life on Fire Virtual Summit! And, for a small donation of just $97 at BusinessOnFireBundle.com you can help us on our mission to build a school through Pencils of Promise and in return we’re going to give you over $6,000 worth of top-knotch training materials and courses on marketing and personal development! Make your donation today! We’ll see you soon on the next Summit session! The Celestial Artisans (497.1) 44:0.1 AMONG the courtesy colonies of the various divisional and universe headquarters worlds may be found the unique order of composite personalities denominated the celestial artisans. These beings are the master artists and artisans of the morontia and lower spirit realms. They are the spirits and semispirits who are engaged in morontia embellishment and in spiritual beautification. Such artisans are distributed throughout the grand universe — on the headquarters worlds of the superuniverses, the local universes, the constellations, and systems, as well as on all spheres settled in light and life; but their chief realm of activity is in the constellations and especially on the seven hundred seventy worlds surrounding each headquarters sphere.* (497.2) 44:0.2 Though their work may be almost incomprehensible to the material mind, it should be understood that the morontia and spirit worlds are not without their high arts and supernal cultures. (497.3) 44:0.3 The celestial artisans are not created as such; they are a selected and recruited corps of beings composed of certain teacher personalities native to the central universe and their volunteer pupils drawn from the ascending mortals and numerous other celestial groups. The original teaching corps of these artisans was sometime assigned by the Infinite Spirit in collaboration with the Seven Master Spirits and consisted of seven thousand Havona instructors, one thousand to each of the seven divisions of artisans. With such a nucleus to start with, there has developed through the ages this brilliant body of skillful workers in spirit and morontia affairs. (497.4) 44:0.4 Any morontia personality or spirit entity is eligible for admission to the corps of the celestial artisans; that is, any being below the rank of inherent divine sonship. Ascending sons of God from the evolutionary spheres may, after their arrival on the morontia worlds, apply for admission to the artisan corps and, if sufficiently gifted, may choose such a career for a longer or shorter period. But no one may enlist with the celestial artisans for less than one millennium, one thousand years of superuniverse time. (497.5) 44:0.5 All celestial artisans are registered on the superuniverse headquarters but are directed by morontia supervisors on the local universe capitals. They are commissioned in the following seven major divisions of activity by the central corps of morontia supervisors functioning on the headquarters world of each local universe: (497.6) 44:0.6 1. Celestial Musicians. (497.7) 44:0.7 2. Heavenly Reproducers. (497.8) 44:0.8 3. Divine Builders. (497.9) 44:0.9 4. Thought Recorders. (498.1) 44:0.10 5. Energy Manipulators. (498.2) 44:0.11 6. Designers and Embellishers. (498.3) 44:0.12 7. Harmony Workers. (498.4) 44:0.13 The original teachers of these seven groups all hailed from the perfect worlds of Havona, and Havona contains the patterns, the pattern studies, for all phases and forms of spirit artistry. While it is a gigantic task to undertake to transfer these arts of Havona to the worlds of space, the celestial artisans have improved in technique and execution from age to age. As in all other phases of the ascending career those who are most advanced in any line of endeavor are required constantly to impart their superior knowledge and skill to their less favored fellows. (498.5) 44:0.14 You will first begin to glimpse these transplanted arts of Havona on the mansion worlds, and their beauty and your appreciation of their beauty will heighten and brighten until you stand in the spirit halls of Salvington and behold the inspiring masterpieces of the supernal artists of the spirit realms. (498.6) 44:0.15 All these activities of the morontia and spirit worlds are real. To spirit beings the spirit world is a reality. To us the material world is the more unreal. The higher forms of spirits freely pass through ordinary matter. High spirits are reactive to nothing material excepting certain of the basic energies. To material beings the spirit world is more or less unreal; to spirit beings the material world is almost entirely unreal, being merely a shadow of the substance of spirit realities. (498.7) 44:0.16 I cannot, with exclusive spirit vision, perceive the building in which this narrative is being translated and recorded. A Divine Counselor from Uversa who chances to stand by my side perceives still less of these purely material creations. We discern how these material structures appear to you by viewing a spirit counterpart presented to our minds by one of our attending energy transformers. This material building is not exactly real to me, a spirit being, but it is, of course, very real and very serviceable to material mortals. (498.8) 44:0.17 There are certain types of beings who are capable of discerning the reality of the creatures of both the spirit and the material worlds. Belonging to this class are the so-called fourth creatures of the Havona Servitals and the fourth creatures of the conciliators. The angels of time and space are endowed with the ability to discern both spirit and material beings as also are the ascending mortals subsequent to deliverance from the life in the flesh. After attainment of the higher spirit levels the ascenders are able to recognize material, morontia, and spirit realities. (498.9) 44:0.18 There is also here with me a Mighty Messenger from Uversa, an ascendant Adjuster-fused, onetime mortal being, and he perceives you as you are, and at the same time he visualizes the Solitary Messenger, the supernaphim, and other celestial beings present. Never in your long ascendancy will you lose the power to recognize your associates of former existences. Always, as you ascend inward in the scale of life, will you retain the ability to recognize and fraternize with the fellow beings of your previous and lower levels of experience. Each new translation or resurrection will add one more group of spirit beings to your vision range without in the least depriving you of the ability to recognize your friends and fellows of former estates. (498.10) 44:0.19 All this is made possible in the experience of ascending mortals by the action of the indwelling Thought Adjusters. Through their retention of the duplicates of your entire life’s experiences, you are assured of never losing any true attribute you once had; and these Adjusters are going through with you, as a part of you, in reality, as you. (499.1) 44:0.20 But I almost despair of being able to convey to the material mind the nature of the work of the celestial artisans. I am under the necessity of constantly perverting thought and distorting language in an effort to unfold to the mortal mind the reality of these morontia transactions and near-spirit phenomena. Your comprehension is incapable of grasping, and your language is inadequate for conveying, the meaning, value, and relationship of these semispirit activities. And I proceed with this effort to enlighten the human mind concerning these realities with the full understanding of the utter impossibility of my being very successful in such an undertaking. (499.2) 44:0.21 I can do no more than attempt to sketch a crude parallelism between mortal material activities and the manifold functions of the celestial artisans. If the Urantia races were more advanced in art and other cultural accomplishments, then could I go that much farther in an effort to project the human mind from the things of matter to those of morontia. About all I can hope to accomplish is to make emphatic the fact of the reality of these transactions of the morontia and the spirit worlds. 1. The Celestial Musicians (499.3) 44:1.1 With the limited range of mortal hearing, you can hardly conceive of morontia melodies. There is even a material range of beautiful sound unrecognized by the human sense of hearing, not to mention the inconceivable scope of morontia and spirit harmony. Spirit melodies are not material sound waves but spirit pulsations received by the spirits of celestial personalities. There is a vastness of range and a soul of expression, as well as a grandeur of execution, associated with the melody of the spheres, that are wholly beyond human comprehension. I have seen millions of enraptured beings held in sublime ecstasy while the melody of the realm rolled in upon the spirit energy of the celestial circuits. These marvelous melodies can be broadcast to the uttermost parts of a universe. (499.4) 44:1.2 The celestial musicians are occupied with the production of celestial harmony by the manipulation of the following spirit forces: (499.5) 44:1.3 1. Spiritual sound — spirit current interruptions. (499.6) 44:1.4 2. Spiritual light — the control and intensification of the light of the morontia and spiritual realms. (499.7) 44:1.5 3. Energy impingements — melody produced by the skillful management of the morontia and spirit energies. (499.8) 44:1.6 4. Color symphonies — melody of morontia color tones; this ranks among the highest accomplishments of the celestial musicians. (499.9) 44:1.7 5. Harmony of associated spirits — the very arrangement and association of different orders of morontia and spirit beings produce majestic melodies. (499.10) 44:1.8 6. Melody of thought — the thinking of spiritual thoughts can be so perfected as to burst forth in the melodies of Havona. (499.11) 44:1.9 7. The music of space — by proper attunement the melodies of other spheres can be picked up on the universe broadcast circuits. (500.1) 44:1.10 There are over one hundred thousand different modes of sound, color, and energy manipulation, techniques analogous to the human employment of musical instruments. Your ensembles of dancing undoubtedly represent a crude and grotesque attempt of material creatures to approach the celestial harmony of being placement and personality arrangement. The other five forms of morontia melody are unrecognized by the sensory mechanism of material bodies. (500.2) 44:1.11 Harmony, the music of the seven levels of melodious association, is the one universal code of spirit communication. Music, such as Urantia mortals understand, attains its highest expression in the schools of Jerusem, the system headquarters, where semimaterial beings are taught the harmonies of sound. Mortals do not react to the other forms of morontia melody and celestial harmony. (500.3) 44:1.12 Appreciation of music on Urantia is both physical and spiritual; and your human musicians have done much to elevate musical taste from the barbarous monotony of your early ancestors to the higher levels of sound appreciation. The majority of Urantia mortals react to music so largely with the material muscles and so slightly with the mind and spirit; but there has been a steady improvement in musical appreciation for more than thirty-five thousand years. (500.4) 44:1.13 Tuneful syncopation represents a transition from the musical monotony of primitive man to the expressionful harmony and meaningful melodies of your later-day musicians. These earlier types of rhythm stimulate the reaction of the music-loving sense without entailing the exertion of the higher intellectual powers of harmony appreciation and thus more generally appeal to immature or spiritually indolent individuals. (500.5) 44:1.14 The best music of Urantia is just a fleeting echo of the magnificent strains heard by the celestial associates of your musicians, who left but snatches of these harmonies of morontia forces on record as the musical melodies of sound harmonics. Spirit-morontia music not infrequently employs all seven modes of expression and reproduction, so that the human mind is tremendously handicapped in any attempt to reduce these melodies of the higher spheres to mere notes of musical sound. Such an effort would be something like endeavoring to reproduce the strains of a great orchestra by means of a single musical instrument. (500.6) 44:1.15 While you have assembled some beautiful melodies on Urantia, you have not progressed musically nearly so far as many of your neighboring planets in Satania. If Adam and Eve had only survived, then would you have had music in reality; but the gift of harmony, so large in their natures, has been so diluted by strains of unmusical tendencies that only once in a thousand mortal lives is there any great appreciation of harmonics. But be not discouraged; some day a real musician may appear on Urantia, and whole peoples will be enthralled by the magnificent strains of his melodies. One such human being could forever change the course of a whole nation, even the entire civilized world. It is literally true, “melody has power a whole world to transform.” Forever, music will remain the universal language of men, angels, and spirits. Harmony is the speech of Havona. 2. The Heavenly Reproducers (500.7) 44:2.1 Mortal man can hardly hope for more than a meager and distorted concept of the functions of the heavenly reproducers, which I must attempt to illustrate through the gross and limited symbolism of your material language. The spirit-morontia world has a thousand and one things of supreme value, things worthy of reproduction but unknown on Urantia, experiences that belong in the category of the activities which have hardly “entered into the mind of man,” those realities which God has in waiting for those who survive the life in the flesh. (501.1) 44:2.2 There are seven groups of the heavenly reproducers, and I will attempt to illustrate their work by the following classification: (501.2) 44:2.3 1. The singers — harmonists who reiterate the specific harmonies of the past and interpret the melodies of the present. But all of this is effected on the morontia level. (501.3) 44:2.4 2. The color workers — those artists of light and shade you might call sketchers and painters, artists who preserve passing scenes and transient episodes for future morontia enjoyment. (501.4) 44:2.5 3. The light picturizers — the makers of the real semispirit-phenomena preservations of which motion pictures would be a very crude illustration. (501.5) 44:2.6 4. The historic pageanteers — those who dramatically reproduce the crucial events of universe records and history. (501.6) 44:2.7 5. The prophetic artists — those who project the meanings of history into the future. (501.7) 44:2.8 6. The life-story tellers — those who perpetuate the meaning and significance of life experience. The projection of present personal experiences into future attainment values. (501.8) 44:2.9 7. The administrative enactors — those who depict the significance of governmental philosophy and administrative technique, the celestial dramatists of sovereignty. (501.9) 44:2.10 Very often and effectively the heavenly reproducers collaborate with the reversion directors in combining memory recapitulation with certain forms of mind rest and personality diversion. Before the morontia conclaves and spirit assemblies these reproducers sometimes associate themselves in tremendous dramatic spectacles representative of the purpose of such gatherings. I recently witnessed such a stupendous presentation in which more than one million actors produced a succession of one thousand scenes. (501.10) 44:2.11 The higher intellectual teachers and the transition ministers freely and effectively utilize these various groups of reproducers in their morontia educational activities. But not all of their efforts are devoted to transient illustration; much, very much, of their work is of a permanent nature and will forever remain as a legacy to all future time. So versatile are these artisans that, when they function en masse, they are able to re-enact an age, and in collaboration with the seraphic ministers they can actually portray the eternal values of the spirit world to the mortal seers of time. 3. The Divine Builders (501.11) 44:3.1 There are cities “whose builder and maker is God.” In spirit counterpart we have all that you mortals are familiar with and inexpressibly more. We have homes, spirit comforts, and morontia necessities. For every material satisfaction which humans are capable of enjoying, we have thousands of spiritual realities that serve to enrich and enlarge our existence. The divine builders function in seven groups: (502.1) 44:3.2 1. The home designers and builders — those who construct and remodel the abodes assigned to individuals and working groups. These morontia and spirit domiciles are real. They would be invisible to your short-range vision, but they are very real and beautiful to us. To a certain extent, all spirit beings may share with the builders certain details of the planning and creation of their morontia or spirit abodes. These homes are fitted up and embellished in accordance with the needs of the morontia or of the spirit creatures who are to inhabit them. There is abundant variety and ample opportunity for individual expression in all these constructions. (502.2) 44:3.3 2. The vocation builders — those who function in designing and assembling the abodes of the regular and routine workers of the spirit and morontia realms. These builders are comparable to those who construct the Urantia workshops and other industrial plants. The transition worlds have a necessary economy of mutual ministry and specialized division of labor. We do not all do everything; there is diversity of function among morontia beings and evolving spirits, and these vocation builders not only build better workshops but also contribute to the vocational enhancement of the worker. (502.3) 44:3.4 3. The play builders. Enormous edifices are utilized during the seasons of rest, what mortals would call recreation and, in a certain sense, play. Provision is made for a suitable setting for the reversion directors, the humorists of the morontia worlds, those transition spheres whereon takes place the training of ascendant beings but recently removed from the evolutionary planets. Even the higher spirits engage in a certain form of reminiscent humor during their periods of spiritual recharging. (502.4) 44:3.5 4. The worship builders — the experienced architects of the spirit and the morontia temples. All the worlds of mortal ascent have temples of worship, and they are the most exquisite creations of the morontia realms and the spirit spheres. (502.5) 44:3.6 5. The education builders — those who build the headquarters of morontia training and advanced spirit learning. Always is the way open to acquire more knowledge, to gain additional information respecting one’s present and future work as well as universal cultural knowledge, information designed to make ascending mortals more intelligent and effective citizens of the morontia and spirit worlds. (502.6) 44:3.7 6. Morontia planners — those who build for the co-ordinate association of all the personalities of all realms as they are at any one time present on any one sphere. These planners collaborate with the Morontia Power Supervisors to enrich the co-ordination of the progressive morontia life. (502.7) 44:3.8 7. The public builders — the artisans who plan and construct the designated places of assembly other than those of worship. Great and magnificent are the places of common assembly. (502.8) 44:3.9 While neither these structures nor their embellishment would be exactly real to the sensory comprehension of material mortals, they are very real to us. You would be unable to see these temples could you be there in the flesh; nevertheless, all of these supermaterial creations are actually there, and we clearly discern them and just as fully enjoy them. 4. The Thought Recorders (503.1) 44:4.1 These artisans are devoted to the preservation and reproduction of the superior thought of the realms, and they function in seven groups: (503.2) 44:4.2 1. Thought preservers. These are the artisans dedicated to the preservation of the higher thought of the realms. On the morontia worlds they truly treasure the gems of mentation. Before first coming to Urantia, I saw records and heard broadcasts of the ideation of some of the great minds of this planet. Thought recorders preserve such noble ideas in the tongue of Uversa. (503.3) 44:4.3 Each superuniverse has its own language, a tongue spoken by its personalities and prevailing throughout its sectors. This is known as the tongue of Uversa in our superuniverse. Each local universe also has its own language. All of the higher orders of Nebadon are bilingual, speaking both the language of Nebadon and the tongue of Uversa. When two individuals from different local universes meet, they communicate in the tongue of Uversa; if, however, one of them hails from another superuniverse, they must have recourse to a translator. In the central universe there is little need of a language; there exists perfect and well-nigh complete understanding; there, only the Gods are not fully comprehended. We are taught that a chance meeting on Paradise reveals more of mutual understanding than could be communicated by a mortal language in a thousand years. Even on Salvington we “know as we are known.” (503.4) 44:4.4 The ability to translate thought into language in the morontia and spirit spheres is beyond mortal comprehension. Our rate of reducing thought to a permanent record can be so speeded up by the expert recorders that the equivalent of over half a million words, or thought symbols, can be registered in one minute of Urantia time. These universe languages are far more replete than the speech of the evolving worlds. The concept symbols of Uversa embrace more than a billion characters, although the basic alphabet contains only seventy symbols. The language of Nebadon is not quite so elaborate, the basic symbols, or alphabet, being forty-eight in number. (503.5) 44:4.5 2. Concept recorders. This second group of recorders are concerned with the preservation of concept pictures, idea patterns. This is a form of permanent recording unknown on the material realms, and by this method I could gain more knowledge in one hour of your time than you could gain in one hundred years of perusing ordinary written language. (503.6) 44:4.6 3. Ideograph recorders. We have the equivalent of both your written and spoken word, but in preserving thought, we usually employ concept picturization and ideograph techniques. Those who preserve ideographs are able to improve one thousandfold upon the work of the concept recorders. (503.7) 44:4.7 4. Promoters of oratory. This group of recorders are occupied with the task of preserving thought for reproduction by oratory. But in the language of Nebadon we could, in a half hour’s address, cover the subject matter of the entire lifetime of a Urantia mortal. Your only hope of comprehending these transactions is to pause and consider the technique of your disordered and garbled dream life — how you can in a few seconds traverse years of experience in these fantasies of the night season. (503.8) 44:4.8 The oratory of the spirit world is one of the rare treats which await you who have heard only the crude and stumbling orations of Urantia. There is harmony of music and euphony of expression in the orations of Salvington and Edentia which are inspiring beyond description. These burning concepts are like gems of beauty in diadems of glory. But I cannot do it! I cannot convey to the human mind the breadth and depth of these realities of another world! (504.1) 44:4.9 5. The broadcast directors. The broadcasts of Paradise, the superuniverses, and the local universes are under the general supervision of this group of thought conservers. They serve as censors and editors as well as co-ordinators of the broadcast material, making a superuniverse adaptation of all Paradise broadcasts and adapting and translating the broadcasts of the Ancients of Days into the individual tongues of the local universes. (504.2) 44:4.10 The local universe broadcasts must also be modified for reception by the systems and the individual planets. The transmittal of these space reports is carefully supervised, and there is always a back registry to insure the proper reception of every report on every world in a given circuit. These broadcast directors are technically expert in the utilization of the currents of space for all purposes of intelligence communication. (504.3) 44:4.11 6. The rhythm recorders. Urantians would undoubtedly denominate these artisans poets, although their work is very different from, and almost infinitely transcends, your poetic productions. Rhythm is less exhausting to both morontia and spirit beings, and so an effort is frequently made to increase efficiency, as well as to augment pleasure, by executing numerous functions in rhythmic form. I only wish you might be privileged to hear some of the poetic broadcasts of the Edentia assemblies and to enjoy the richness of the color and tone of the constellation geniuses who are masters of this exquisite form of self-expression and social harmonization. (504.4) 44:4.12 7. The morontia recorders. I am at a loss to know how to depict to the material mind the function of this important group of thought recorders assigned to the work of preserving the ensemble pictures of the various groupings of morontia affairs and spirit transactions; crudely illustrated, they are the group photographers of the transition worlds. They save for the future the vital scenes and associations of these progressive epochs, preserving them in the archives of the morontia halls of records. 5. The Energy Manipulators (504.5) 44:5.1 These interesting and effective artisans are concerned with every kind of energy: physical, mindal, and spiritual. (504.6) 44:5.2 1. Physical-energy manipulators. The physical-energy manipulators serve for long periods with the power directors and are experts in the manipulation and control of many phases of physical energy. They are conversant with the three basic currents and the thirty subsidiary energy segregations of the superuniverses. These beings are of inestimable assistance to the Morontia Power Supervisors of the transition worlds. They are the persistent students of the cosmic projections of Paradise. (504.7) 44:5.3 2. Mind-energy manipulators. These are the experts of intercommunication between morontia and other types of intelligent beings. This form of communication between mortals is practically nonexistent on Urantia. These are the specialists who promote the ability of the ascending morontia beings to communicate with one another, and their work embraces numerous unique adventures in intellect liaison which are far beyond my power to portray to the material mind. These artisans are the keen students of the mind circuits of the Infinite Spirit. (505.1) 44:5.4 3. Spiritual-energy manipulators. The manipulators of spiritual energy are an intriguing group. Spiritual energy acts in accordance with established laws, just as does physical energy. That is, spirit force, when studied, yields dependable deductions and can be precisely dealt with, even as can the physical energies. There are just as certain and reliable laws in the spirit world as obtain in the material realms. During the last few millions of years many improved techniques for the intake of spiritual energy have been effected by these students of the fundamental laws of the Eternal Son governing spirit energy as applied to the morontia and other orders of celestial beings throughout the universes. (505.2) 44:5.5 4. The compound manipulators. This is the adventurous group of well-trained beings who are dedicated to the functional association of the three original phases of divine energy manifested throughout the universes as physical, mindal, and spiritual energies. These are the keen personalities who are in reality seeking to discover the universe presence of God the Supreme, for in this Deity personality there must occur the experiential unification of all grand universe divinity. And to a certain extent, these artisans have in recent times met with some success. (505.3) 44:5.6 5. The transport advisers. This corps of technical advisers to the transport seraphim are most proficient in collaborating with the star students in working out routings and in otherwise assisting the chiefs of transport on the worlds of space. They are the traffic supervisors of the spheres and are present on all inhabited planets. Urantia is served by a corps of seventy transport advisers. (505.4) 44:5.7 6. The experts of communication. Urantia, likewise, is served by twelve technicians of interplanetary and interuniverse communication. These long-experienced beings are expert in the knowledge of the laws of transmittal and interference as applied to the communications of the realms. This corps is concerned with all forms of space messages except those of Gravity and Solitary Messengers. On Urantia much of their work must be accomplished over the archangels’ circuit. (505.5) 44:5.8 7. The teachers of rest. Divine rest is associated with the technique of spiritual-energy intake. Morontia and spirit energy must be replenished just as certainly as physical energy, but not for the same reasons. I am, perforce, compelled to employ crude illustrations in my attempts to enlighten you; nevertheless, we of the spirit world must stop our regular activities periodically and betake ourselves to suitable places of rendezvous where we enter the divine rest and thus recuperate our depleting energies. (505.6) 44:5.9 You will receive your first lessons in these matters when you reach the mansion worlds after you have become morontia beings and have begun to experience the technique of spirit affairs. You know of the innermost circle of Havona and that, after the pilgrims of space have traversed the preceding circles, they must be inducted into the long and revivifying rest of Paradise. This is not only a technical requirement of transit from the career of time to the service of eternity, but it is also a necessity, a form of rest required to replenish the energy losses incident to the final steps of the ascendant experience and to store reserves of spirit power for the next stage of the endless career. (506.1) 44:5.10 These energy manipulators also function in hundreds of other ways too numerous to catalogue, such as counseling with the seraphim, cherubim, and sanobim regarding the most efficient modes of energy intake and as to the maintenance of the most helpful balances of divergent forces between active cherubim and passive sanobim. In many other ways do these experts lend assistance to morontia and spirit creatures in their efforts to understand the divine rest, which is so essential to the effective utilization of the basic energies of space. 6. The Designers and Embellishers (506.2) 44:6.1 How I wish I knew how to portray the exquisite work of these unique artisans! Every attempt on my part to explain the work of spirit embellishment would only recall to material minds your own pitiful but worthy efforts to do these things on your world of mind and matter. (506.3) 44:6.2 This corps, while embracing over one thousand subdivisions of activity, is grouped under the following seven major heads: (506.4) 44:6.3 1. The craftworkers of color. These are they who make the ten thousand color tones of spirit reflection peal forth their exquisite messages of harmonious beauty. Aside from color perception there is nothing in human experience to which these activities may be compared. (506.5) 44:6.4 2. The sound designers. Spirit waves of diverse identity and morontia appreciation are depicted by these designers of what you would call sound. These impulses are in reality the superb reflections of the naked and glorious spirit-souls of the celestial hosts. (506.6) 44:6.5 3. The emotion designers. These enhancers and conservators of feeling are those who preserve the sentiments of morontia and the emotions of divinity for the study and edification of the children of time and for the inspiration and beautification of morontia progressors and advancing spirits. (506.7) 44:6.6 4. The artists of odor. This comparison of supernal spirit activities to the physical recognition of chemical odors is, indeed, unfortunate, but Urantia mortals could hardly recognize this ministry by any other name. These artisans create their varied symphonies for the edification and delight of the advancing children of light. You have nothing on earth to which this type of spiritual grandeur can be even
Adam Urbanski is a marketing strategist and mentor who works with coaches, consultants, and service professionals. Adam came to the U.S. in the late 80s, unable to speak English and broke, to follow his entrepreneurial dreams. After years of hard work and passionate mentoring, he now calls himself the “Grandaddy of Marketing Online." Inspiration: Adam came to the U.S. as a polish immigrant carrying only $194 in his pocket. What he did possess in abundance was a passion for sharing information with others and a hunger for more, which led him into the world of business. While running a successful restaurant business, Adam realized that his favorite part was communicating with others and teaching them how to become more successful. This revelation inspired Adam to create his consulting business. Challenge: After selling his multi-million dollar restaurant business to become a consultant (at the age of twenty-nine), Adam quickly ascertained that he did not fit the typical image of his profession. At that time, competent consultants were expected to have grey hair and wear three-piece suits. In order to overcome this obstacle, Adam hired a sales coach to teach him the skills that would ultimately set him apart. It was only when he adopted the sales psychology and confidence to ask for big bucks that Adam started seeing massive results. Passion: Adam's passion is to continue his vision of awakening people to possibility and opportunity through building a highly successful business and turning it into an educational empire. Advice: Be smart enough to ask questions… and then shut up and listen. If you want to be successful in business, find a need and fill it. But if you want to be filthy rich, create a market and control it. In order to achieve the highest level, you have to build, and actively grow, a following. It is important to remember that there is always someone out there that is hungrier, has a bigger vision, and is more attuned to the new technologies than you. If you are not asking yourself the question, “How do I disrupt the industry?,” rest assured that they are and they'll put you out of business sooner or later. Even though it may sound counterintuitive to how he was brought up, Adam swears by the words once spoken to him: “The less you do, the more you make.” Realize your zone of genius and focus on that - let other people help you with everything else. When did all of the races start? If Adam was made from dirt, what race was he? Should we expect God to move in miraculous ways today like he did in the O.T., when we need help or deliverance? And if so, how does one keep from getting discouraged if...
TRANSCRIPT At Pentecost Mass in Rome this past Sunday, Pope Francis was reported to have said the following: "Today, if we listen to the Spirit, we will not focus on conservatives and progressives, traditionalists and liberals, right-wingers and leftists. If this is the criteria, then the Spirit is forgotten in the Church. The Paraclete urges unity, consensus." This is one of those counsels to the faithful that sounds wonderful on the surface, but with just a smidgen of second thought, reveals itself to be completely empty and bereft of any substance. The main reason is that there is absolutely zero context. Of course the Holy Spirit urges unity. Consensus, on the other hand, well, we don't quite know what is meant by that. Again, it's lacking context. Does consensus mean something akin to compromise where we all decide this or that based on some kind of spiritual horse-trading? You know, the stuff that comprises the art of diplomacy, such as compromise. The basic issue with using terms like "progressive," "liberal" and "leftist" as adjectives for Catholics is simple: There is no such thing. There's only one word for what is trying to be described: "heretic." As St. Thomas More would say, "It's not a likable word; it's not a likable thing." The basic issue with using terms like 'progressive,' 'liberal' and 'leftist' as adjectives for Catholics is simple: There is no such thing. But it is the best word. When a person claiming to be Catholic continually espouses ideas, notions and ideologies that morph into an agenda that is anti-Catholic, that person is not a "progressive Catholic." He is a traitor to the Faith. This is not isolated to just the arena of intrinsic evils, but it certainly is most prominently seen there. When James Martin, Blase Cupich, Joseph Tobin or Robert McElroy try to doublespeak and make homosexual acts seem OK, that's not progressive Catholicism. It's heresy. Nor is it liberal or leftist. All those terms are political labels. They have no business or traction inside the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. That's precisely what the "One" stands for and signifies at the head of that list. And when a priest, bishop or cardinal tries to teach or present "between the lines" that sodomy, for example, is not an intrinsically evil act, they are, in no way, being Catholic. "Liberal Catholics" don't get to support sodomy or gloss over the LGBTQ+ agenda and then present themselves as somehow Catholic. When priests and bishops of Germany "bless" homosexual couples, they aren't doing something "progressively Catholic." They're doing something anti-Catholic. They are, in fact, abusing their offices and authority to make something unholy out of that which is holy. That's the walking definition of sacrilege. Perhaps a better way for the Holy Father to have phrased this might have been an appeal to the Holy Spirit to bring unity to the Catholic clergy and laity who are supporting sacrilege and dissent and heresy. And that means conversion, not consensus. There is no consensus with sacrilege or evil or sin. The Church is not a government agency (although sacrilegious dissidents behave as though it is) where we come up with policies we can "unify" around and create a "big tent" so that we can all give up something in exchange for something else and cut backroom deals on assorted teachings. Yet, if you look around the leadership of the Church these days, that is exactly what we have — a corrupt hierarchy that, while perhaps not outwardly denying the teachings (although some have), has kept quiet in the face of scandal, sacrilege, abuse, theft and everything else. Such men are not merely "leftist Catholics" or some other variety. They act in a manner diametrically opposed to the One True Faith. Where there is a legitimate difference in the Church is over spiritualities, devotions and so forth. There can be various discussions on finer points of questions like, "If Adam and Eve had not sinned, would the Second Person have incarnated anyway?" Exploring a question like that can broaden thought to bring up other questions and reflections and arrive at new understandings of the same truth. There is nothing anti-Catholic or opposed to truth in asking, for example, if we will have our pets in Heaven. Of course, these are theological questions that we'll likely only know once we die. In the meantime, they'll make for splendid Catholic discussion around the barbecue this coming weekend. All those terms are political labels. They have no business or traction inside the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. We can divide and subdivide into the pro-pet Catholic or the anti-Incarnation Catholic, assuming Adam and Eve had not sinned. But there can be no division — hence, no need for adjectives and descriptors — with Catholics who accept the unity of the Church as She is constituted in Christ. But those who create conditions leading to confusion in men's souls, conditions that raise doubts about the Church Herself — which is what lies at the bottom of all this because that is the desired outcome — well, my dog Rebel is more Catholic than they are. After all, which of these two creatures has never masqueraded error as truth? Rebel is straight-up Catholic — at least as much as leftist, liberal, progressive Catholics, which is simply shorthand for "heretic."
